Rinnegan: The chakra element converter

The chakra of each ninja has a certain specific elemental affinity. Some has wind-based chakra, some has fire-based, etc. For certain bloodline users, they have more than one affinities of chakra and are able to merge them into a new element. While using an elemental jutsu such as Fuuton, it's a huge plus to have the corresponding type of chakra because it will greatly intensify its power and effectiveness.

There are 5 basic elements in Naruto. They're the creation of Kishimoto and differ from the actual 5 elements in Chinese culture by 2 elements. (and differ from the Japanese version by only 1 element but since I can't find its chart I will use the Chinese version)

The Actual Chinese 5 Elements

If we replace the 木 (Wood) by 雷 (Lightning) and 金 (Metal) by 風 (Wind), we will get the Kishimoto version of the 5 elements, as following:

Naruto's 5 Elements

There are 2 types of relationships between the 5 elements, but only one has been shown in the manga so far, namely the Mutual Subjugation, which is represented by the star in the diagram above (Water subjugates Fire, Fire subjugates Wind, and so on).

Another relationship is called Mutual Generation. It's represented by the outer circle in the diagram.

Water generates Lightning (through cloud?)
Lightning generates Fire
Fire generates Earth
Earth generates Wind
Wind generates Water

(The last 2 don't make much sense to me but neither does "Wind subjugates Lightning")


The Rinnegan is said to grant its user a mastery in 6 elements (more on the sixth element later). Therefore, a Rinnegan user can skillfully wield any type of elemental jutsu. It's my speculation that Rinnegan does this by freely converting the chakra in the user's body from one elemental affinity to another in accordance with the Mutual Generation Principle. For example, after using a Suiton, to cast a Fuuton the Rinnegan will simply convert the Water-based chakra to Wind-based chakra through the route

Water -> Lightning -> Fire -> Earth -> Wind


What is the sixth element?

Many suggest it's Yin/Yang. But I read from wikipedia Yin/Yang is actually part of the 5 elements itself.

Wood (replaced by Lightning) = New Yang
Fire = Full Yang
Earth = Yin/Yang balance
Metal (replaced by Wind) = New Yin
Water = Full Yin

So this could be how a Rinnegan user changes his chakra element, by changing the proportion of the Yin/Yang components in his chakra (For instance, Earth -> Wind, more Yin less Yang)

But the Yin and Yang are only components that make up the chakra, they're not elemental affinities by themselves. Then what could be the sixth element?

Actually there are 6 elements in the Japanese culture. 5 belong to the Material World and 1 belongs to the Spiritual World. It's called Consciousness (識, Shiki). (Proof)


It grants the user a very special ability. Actually the design of the Rinnegan provides a hint to this.

What does it remind you of?

Hypnosis? Mind control? That's right. The Shiki chakra allows you to take over the consciousness of other beings. This could be how the real Pain controls the 6 bodies and the summons, by transferring his Consciousness-based chakra into them through the black chakra receivers to take control of their minds and actions.

the chakra convertor could explain how one person's body can obtain all the elements, because a kid able to handle all of that seemed farfetched, the Hypnosis thing was what I first thought when Pain was first introduced, I never really thought Consciousness or whatever the six element is would possibly exist in another world or realm.

Sorry but I simply disagree with the theory. It's plain wrong. You take an elemental circle and just exchange two parts. You can't just exchange two parts. Kishi wouldn't do that either and by the way there are circles which work. And Kishi does take refference to this circle (well pointed out) but he doesn't use it the way you're suggesting. He uses a different circle and then he simply says this and that beats each other. Probably like you desribed.

As for the rinnengan, I also associate it with hypnosis. The form is obvious and the doujutsu is in fact blue which I would also associate with intellect. But as for Nagato controlling Pein I prefer this great theory!!!

As far as associating elements with yin and yang, I think I disagree with this. Here the elemts are displayed next to the spiritual and physical energies. I think that Kishi was hinting that one's natural affinity is directly connected up the normal proportions a ninja produces in terms of spiritual and physical energy in his chakra.

The lighning would be yin and fire yang. That would explain why Uchiha is so talented with yin (sasuke with lighning and with fire) Itachi says Kakashi has a fitting body for the sharingan and Kakashi does this: http://www.onemanga.com/Naruto/242/10/ which I would also associate with yang. And Kakashi has the lighning ability which is yin

i like this theory ALOT since it makes sense. i didn't realize the whole create and destroy cycle andthat kishimoto only uses the destroy cylce. perhaps later on when they explain yin and yang they'll refernce the create cylce.

about the yin and yang part though...the manga cleary states it as a type of nature alteration (seshitsu henka). but i'm sure it can still fit in your theory somehow. we dunno much else about it.

yin and yang isn't a 6th element, it's the 6th type of chakra nature btw. there's a difference. so that should match your theory more somehow...

*seishitsu henka - nature alteration

*keitai henka - shape/form alteration

sei - 性
shitsu - 質
hen - 変
ka - 化

yin and yang - 陰と陽

you can clearly see it says yin and yang seishitsu henka.
page 09, chapter 316

you can clearly see it says 6 seishitsu henka.
page 11, chapter 375

so there are 6 chakra natures, and yin and yang is a nature besides the 5 elemental ones (fire, wind, lightning, earth, water).

yin and yang nature chakra could be linked to the conciousness thing you're talking about.

Actually, in my mind, that pattern likely to similar with two dimensional projection of radio wave. I hope this image below could illustrate that matter.

I suppose By inserting corect IP address the "Server" could control remote "clients". I think Ino's father was trying to find the server's IP, and it seem he must face proxys.

So, in my opinion, the server wouldn't have to transfer power chakra. Instead, the server just need to sent "commands" in the form of signals chakra from remote area. While, the power chakra, complete with jutsu (software) packages, provided through the clients hardwares. This wouldn't be far from your shiki control theory.

I think the idea of chakra conventer is very intersting. I like the idea. However, I would think why need to convert if you can simply do a remote overide.

I REALLY REALLY LIKE the idea of ordycitizen very smart and out of the box thinking -> +reps matches very well with the radio tranciever and the radio waves that the rings in Pein's bodies are recieving.

I think that chakra conversion theory is great. until manga proves me wrong its canon.

about the concsiousness chakra. that sounds cool. I would love it if it turned out to be
harmony though. a frequency chakra that gives the wielder power over
the fundamental building blocks of reality through sound. just think if pain could speak
one inaudable *trueword* and just revise reality.in the begining there was the word and the word was god and the word was with god. just replace god with pain
