What I'd like to do is to convert .wma and .mp3 files to .mp4 and/or m4v (which I'm assuming is a music file). My phone, oddly and frustratingly enough, does not support the more common music files like .mp3 and .wma, and I'd like to add some music to my phone.
I'd love to know if there are any out here who knows of a great (and FREE) music converter program that will successfully turn my .mp3 and .wma files to .mp4 and/or m4v. Or maybe I could upload the test track to the person, who would then convert and send it back afterwards to me or something. Anyone know of any good music converters? Tried download.com. Did nothing for me. There has to be someone on here who knows there way around this kind of stuff.

being unable to double check i believe Winamp is able to convert to m4a atleast. Super can convert most common file formats. What phone?
Most nokia's do come with software to convert to a mobile friendly format.

seeing as you want something free, you're gonna be looking at something unreliable. And unless you want go to get some "unsavoury" method of acquiring copyrighted softward, i can not recommennd dbPoweramp enough. It will convert almost any media file you can think of, is smooth and efficient. Also, as an added bonus, it retains any ID3 and/or picture tags

Well, phone's not a Nokia and it definitely doesn't do much to help with file conversion.

If it fails, I'll look into a program that requires payment.

I found a software called Xilisoft audio encoder, but it's a shareware.
The same is true for the River Past MPEG-4 encoder. Both are around $30USD I'll have to look into this tunecab, sounds interesting.

This is the one I have. It's free, works for just about everything out there, and it actually works. I will tell you, it's hella slow the first couple of times running, and it'll slow down or freeze up your computer until it's done loading, so I don't recommend playing a game while opening this. Like I said, it only happens for the first couple of times, then it gets to running really fast. The conversion time is nice and quick as well. |

dbPoweramp and the Nero mp4 extension. If quality's an issue, than this is the best you can get out of reencoding already compressed files.

Of the MPEG-4 formats, *.m4a is the audio format, *.m4v is the video format and *.mp4 is either/or (I believe it's MPEG-4 video with MP3/4 audio interterlaced rather than PCM audio).
You won't find a single, free program that'd do it. Your best bet is to try a free program (like WinAmp or Audacity) that can convert between audio formats, and find free plug-ins that'll add the functionality of exporting your auido in your desired format. Most phones use the 3GPP or 3GP2 format for video (and audio to some extent). |
