In the distant future, the mankind is divided into two powers; Union and Deague. They have continued long war that no one is sure when it began. Union uses manned weapons, Strain, as the main military power, while Deague uses unmanned weapons Tumoru.
Sara Viereck, a daughter of a good family, is a Union’s 16-year-old girl who goes to Grapera Space Armed Soldier Academy locates in Cranial Solar System in order to become a full-fledged Reasoner (a pilot of Strain).
Her brother, Ralph Viereck, was sent to the front line 130 light years away to accomplish a special mission when she was 11 years old. It takes 400 years of objective time even by the fastest sub-light speed space craft of Union. However, according to relativist theory, it corresponds to two subjective years (the time crews experiences). Therefore, Sara needs to go to the same battle field to meet her brother.
Because they lost their parents when they were quite young, Sara thinks of her bother as a guy dearer than a sibling, and she lives for their reunion.
One day, the planet Sara lives is suddenly assaulted by Deague. Surprisingly, it was her brother Ralph that takes away a mysterious girl sleeping in a capsule.
To search the truth, Sara gets in Strain and runs after him. However, she receives an attack from Ralph, and the Mimic is broken. The Mimic is a copy of the pilot’s brain, and it is an essential part to control the Strain.

YEah! I was stunned at how fast that happened. When I saw that I just couldn't believe. The second episode is really tough on her too. The poor girl doesn't get a break.

saw the first episode. it was awesome i hope they are all like that. well not in the sense of tragedy striking at the main character every episode just like that they should leave a few episodes for her to get some hope then crush it in the next episode with another tragedy.

This isn't half bad, but might be a little predictable.

It's an interesting premise that a war spans hundreds of years on account of the limitations of space travel, leaving behind civilian populations who know there is an ongoing state of war, but don't really recieve up to date news. It's almost like back in the Roman era, where campaigns could last years and communications would take months at best.

At the same time, the people who are actually doing the fighting leave behind everything they ever knew to do so.

I pegged her brother as a traitor about five minutes into the show. Obviously there's going to be some sort of explanation for it, and hopefully an interesting one.

I think her friends getting killed off was meant to show how she is as a character. She didn't cry much about them dying and immediately forgot all about them once she saw her brother again. There's nothing bad about her, it's just she's very much into her brother and no one else has reached out to her. Also demonstrates that she has a special mental toughness.

And so she starts out as a grunt pilot but apparently finds her brother's old mimic, meaning because she's related to him she can use his mimic? So the girl in the lab was possibly their father's old mimic? Maybe that's what happened to him. Emily broke or altered him somehow and now he's turned sides?

my view on what happened was that she first thought of getting revenge then when her brother who killed her friends, tried to kill her knowing she was inside the robot and broke the pod thingie she realized it all at the same time and snapped.

Maybe there will be some more nice twists, like....the guy who lvoed her returns s the villain ^_^. Thought whats confusing in episode 1...

Her brother was rescuing a little girl, plus she doesn't seem to be evil, which reminds of in wars both sides can be evil and good.

I just watched episode 3 too, and this was the best episode too. I love this show, how they kill people with regardless abandon.

I was doing the victory dance when that Isabella bitch was snatched and killed. I'll be pissed if she somehow survives all that during the next episode. I have to thank her though, if she had not sabotaged Sara's armor suit she would not have been called by the mimic inside the ship.

This is an incredible show, you see , if they try they can come with good shows that are not based on manga or games.

Oh yeah, I remember aiming to watch this series before, along with other mecha anime titles this fall.

I actually saw screens of this series at KZI, and I think I'm going to check this out, simply because I need my mecha fix and I want to confirm the author's claim that it doesn't "fall into the pits of the generic and average mecha titles".

...and because I haven't heard news of a subbed Olynssis episode, but of course, that's a different topic.

Oh... this looks interesting. I don't really usually enjoy mecha shows, but I'll give this a try.

Seen the first two episodes.

My impressions:

In terms of the mechanics, the first thing that came to my mind was Zone of the Enders. The STRAINS resemble Orbital Frames, and the GAMBEES look like LEVs. Not to mention that the antagonist group, Deague, uses unmanned weapons just like BAHRAM from ZOE.

Storywise, I kinda agree with the author's claim over at KZI now after seeing it. Though there's still this Gundam-ish feeling on it.

Episode 1 was astounding. Simply because I've never seen a series that kills three major characters within like, 30 seconds in the episode itself! And yeah, after the events Episode 1, Sara does a Shinn Asuka.

I can safely say that I'm going to like this series. The mecha designs are good, the battle sequences are fast-paced, and most importantly, the protagonist is female! I mean, I've seen a lot of mecha anime, but there hasn't been much female pilots taking the lead.

Of course, we'll see if she gets to fight her brother, who has a striking resemblance to Zechs Marquise.

Okay, screw me. I know I've been watching too much mecha anime.

Edit: I was checking out info about this series over at ANN, and I was surprised when I read that this series is actually "a science fictional adaptation loosely based on the novel A Little Princess by Francis Hodgson Burnett".

And then I noticed the character names... some of those names in S-Strain are also in the novel, not to mention Sara's decline from being a Reasoner to being an ordinary pilot, and her being maltreated by people around her. Interesting.
