She's 70. Its possible her memory is failing her, might be a bit late to start driving...

Dunno... my gran started learning to drive when she was 69 and passed her theory test first time (passed her practical on her fifth try when she was 72). Maybe this little old lady is just a bit thick, or didn't realise that you have to actually, you know, study before you take the test?

statistics:

50 questions, need 60% to pass (30 correct out of 50)
assume 5 choices per question and random guessing (ie - 20% chance to get a question correct by guessing)

binomial distribution:
P(r) = N! / (r! *(N-r)!) * p^r * (1-p)^N-r
N = 50 questions
r = 30 answered correctly
p = 20% is the chance of success per trial
P(r) = probability that she gets 30 out of 50 correct by random guessing

sum of P(r) from r:30-50 (ie - all scores that pass) is about 7E-10

so, it's statistically significant she was able to pass in less than 1E3 trials

I don't think it has anything to do with not being smart. If you have friends whose parents are immigrants, you would know that many of them don't speak English. Quite Frankly, even after she passed the test, I still don't think she is able to speak English or know what the driving laws are in England. The reason it took her that many tries before she passed the exam was because it took her that long to memorize which answer belong to which questions despite the facts she couldn't read the words and the questions are randomly generated. It took her that many times before she can familiarize herself with the answers and the questions without actually knowing them.

I am doing just fine despite the fact that I don't know half of the driving laws in Massachusetts. You know how I pass the test? I know that the wait time at the DMV is quite long, so I decided to study while I wait. There are booklets about the laws of the road at the DMV, I just take it and scan over the pages while I wait and when it's my turn to take the test, I come in while those laws still fresh in my mind and pass the test in about 5 minutes. Now if you ask me about the driving laws in Massachusetts, I don't even know half of them. But it still doesn't hinder my driving since I have never gotten into an auto accident. Most of us can drive a car just fine without a driver license.

Anyway, I am a little concern since she is 68 years old. She is not exactly young to operate a vehicle.
