I made this tutorial about a year ago, but I think it's about time I bring place it on this forum.

First of all, I would like to give credit where credit is due, I used a tutorial from NF member as a template for my tutorial. (Credits AOI on Naruto Forums)

Okay, I'm going to provide an overview on how to create animations with imageready and Virtualdub.
Well, be creating this:

http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/2220/bleachfaces9ky.gif (http://www.imageshack.us)

Before you start, here's what you need:

1. Virtualdub: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/virtual....3.zip?download (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/virtualdub/VirtualDub-1.6.3.zip?download)

2. Imageready: It's included with Photoshop
You can buy the program, or certain programs like limewire can be very useful in acquiring it.

3. If you didn't figure it out, you will also need a avi video file :P

4. Create a folder on your desktop...called "artwork"

Once you extract the Virtualdub file, double-click the file and click on run

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8341/kiratut18xz.th.jpg (http://img23.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kiratut18xz.jpg)

Go to File---> open Video File.....(or CONTROL + O)

Now the movie loads in 2 screens, we don't really need to pay attention to it.
Just make sure you resize them so that you can edit the time line.

Go to the desired timeframe and press BEGIN (the begin of your image sequence). After that, keep clicking on 1 FRAME FORWARD until you think the action has stopped. After that click END (the end of your image sequence)

END OF STEP 1

Kira Yamato
05-04-2006, 09:27 PM
I suggest that the frames shouldn't be any longer than 200 of frames. 100 frames is my standard maximum, any more and it can cause some serious loading issues.

-Next step: save the image sequence

http://img498.imageshack.us/img498/8192/kiratut27uv.th.jpg (http://img498.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kiratut27uv.jpg)

Go to "save image sequence"

http://img498.imageshack.us/img498/5738/kiratut30gc.th.jpg (http://img498.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kiratut30gc.jpg)

You will save the images to your "artwork" folder (Or any folder you like the images to be in) on your desktop

*.tga is recommend it will keep the images smallest.

End of Step 2

Kira Yamato
05-04-2006, 09:27 PM
After you press okay, you should see this:

http://img498.imageshack.us/img498/6663/kiratut45bp.th.jpg (http://img498.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kiratut45bp.jpg)

And if you look in your "artwork" folder, you will see the images from
bleach0000001.tga to bleach0000034.tga

Open the program Image Ready go to "Import-->Folder As Frames"

http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/5171/kiratut50iz.th.jpg (http://img117.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kiratut50iz.jpg)

You should see something along this line. It's the program opening up the files.

http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/5184/kiratut65vs.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

End of Step 3

Kira Yamato
05-04-2006, 09:29 PM
Go (above in the toolbar) to image > imagesize and reduce it to 130 x 98 (or use your own settings)

http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/3071/kiratut79zh.th.jpg (http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kiratut79zh.jpg)

The file size should now be 130 X 98

http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/6475/kiratut89jk.th.jpg (http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kiratut89jk.jpg)

Just look to this image, you will understand where all the images are coming from. Upperleft bar is the preview window, the bar below is the timeframe, the bar on the right is the layer frame. We will only use the timeframe in this tutorial.

WARNING: You can only edit the image if you set the preview window to Original, and NOT to Optimized

End of Step 4

Kira Yamato
05-04-2006, 09:29 PM
If you click optimized you'll come across some useful data

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/8182/kiratut95jp.th.jpg (http://img186.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kiratut95jp.jpg)

That's pretty small size for a gif animation so you won't need to be edited. However, if the file was large we would have to reduce it.

Removing frames is the simplest way to reduce size.

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/5282/kiratut107lw.th.jpg (http://img186.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kiratut107lw.jpg)

(first go back to original preview mode)
Select a frame, and hold shift till the last frame you want to delete. And press the recycle bin.
And remove the frames

End of Step 5

Kira Yamato
05-04-2006, 09:30 PM
Now edit the refreshrate of the images, i used 0.03 seconds. (delay time)

http://img498.imageshack.us/img498/3595/kira117ao.th.jpg (http://img498.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kira117ao.jpg)

After that *GO TO File --> save optimized as Bleachintro.gif

http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/885/kiratut124ze.th.jpg (http://img493.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kiratut124ze.jpg)

End of Tutorial

Great tut :3

And people, remember that you can add normal kind of brushing and such to animated avas too, if you want -- just make layers above to those ones imported from imageready ^^

It's called a "tween"

The screencaps should help.

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/2904/tween3aa.th.jpg (http://img141.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tween3aa.jpg)

And if you're tweening between images use the "next" option.
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7650/tween38qu.th.jpg (http://img141.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tween38qu.jpg)

But if you're looping the image use the "first" option to connect the first and last frames. The first option only comes up when the last frame is highlighted.

^Probably memory problems. It happened to me. But when I got more RAM it was fine. Just close all other programs and pray. or get more RAM!

Edit: I have a good tip! In the image sequence folder get rid of every second image (I choose the odd ones) They're virtualy the same as the one directly before or after them. This allwows you to create longer GIFs.

Well, make sure you have an .avi version of the video you want to make the gif animation from and use the program "virtual Dub" to save the frames. The link to download Virtual dub is on my first post in this thread.

sorry, Kira. But I just couldn't stroke the .gif image to make a border as usual ? WHy is that ?

Besides , why does the image quality decrease ? Is it just because it's a gif file or sth

Thanks .

Excalibur
05-31-2006, 04:15 PM
image quality goes down since you are reducing the image size that contains many colors...

as for borders...if the stroke form doesn't work...do this:

select the rectangle tool and go to the top where you see style.

choose 3-point black inner no fill and make a rectangle over your gif
then choose 2 point white inner no fill and make another rectangle
finally choose 1 point black inner no fill and make one last rectangle

and there you go....

I'm not sure but, maybe you forgot to do Ctrl + A? :P

Just a wild guess, since I usually make that mistake. ^^ Don't forget to do Ctrl + A, THEN do Edit -> Stroke. :D

The image quality thing I'm not so sure about, I've never noticed. :/

First off a few observations:

1. You could have reduced the colors from 128 to 64 or remove a few more frames to reduce kb size.

2. The tween feature was done well

3. Borders were done well.

Overall, great job for a first try. Believe me, my first try was laughable, and totally noobish, but yours was really well done.

You can leave it as is....because 492kb is a mangeable size.
....but say you wanted to make an avatar and found that it was too large a file size, in that case you could always reduced the colors or remove a few more frames to reduce kb size.

Once again good job.

I get that sometimes as well. It means you don't have the right codecs installed.

See if this works.

Combined-Community-Codec-Pack-2006-01-18.zip (http://38.99.150.155/dl/69729d147c6017a2c356586287b216ba/4494d89f/1uy3o5/Combined-Community-Codec-Pack-2006-01-18.zip)

After installing it,your problems should clear up. And if you have previous codecs installed on your pc I suggest uninstalling them first. >_>

It's most like the video file you're using. Are you using only one particualr video file? Try another one and see what you get.

Another thing I would do is convert the video file using another more appropriate codec with a conversion program like "Super"

*looks for link to the download site >_>

I was about to say 700mb!!

well, you got a scene that unfortunately ttok up alot of kb space. Unless you want to further cut down the scene 700+kb is what you'll have to stick with.

and as for the speed, you had your frame delay set at .03

I would try another speed like .1 or .2 to try to slow down the frame.

This was set at between .1 and .2 (0.17)

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/6938/snakevsgrey8rp2a2wu.gif (http://imageshack.us)

If I wanted to speed up this scene, I'd set it at a lower number like .15 or .12, etc...

Thanks for the advice... Ill try to cut down on the scope of my scenes... its just too tough for me to crop so much of it sometimes... I already cut alot of the scene from my original amount of frames... Ill have another go at a gif later today and bring it by then :laugh

EDIT
Okay i worked for a bit and I got this... this one worked well and the speed is better... and its also under 300 mb

it wasn't a screenshot...it was a full blown gif...a screenshot would be like my current avy....

You're missing the appropriate codecs.

Install this codec pack and see if it works:

Excalibur

not that I know of....virtual dub only uses avi and can use mkv and mpeg files....

you cannot open a DVD movie in virtual dub and if you have DVD files, you would need to convert them to avi before you could open them in virtualdub.

You'll need a program like Xilisoft to rip the DVD video. But it isn't free :noworry
But once you have that prgram it's pretty self-explanatory. :noworry

A free program called SUPER, might be able to do it, but I haven't used it on DVD files yet. Maybe TBH has done so before :oh

Thanks for the great tutorial Kira Yamato. I've been able to make good gifs, but now I've come across a problem.
On the creating the borders stage (post 8), when I go to select, instead of saying "All" it says "All Slices" and I'm unable to put a border.
What can I do to change it back to normal?
Here's my problem...
http://img156.imageshack.us/my.php?i...trouble5lf.jpg

you were using the slice tool......when you wanna select all, just have another too activated since if you have the slice tool, it'll select all the slices

or you can simply press ctrl + a.....

Can i use the virtual dub software to make a JPEG file turn into gifs, can someone tell me? :)

virtualdub can only save things as either a jpeg, targa, or bitmap

virtual dub can take screencaps as jpegs...but you'll have to open the jpeg in imageready in order to save it as a gif.

can anyone help me with compressing the GIF image?

The only ways to reduce the file size of a gif is:
1) Delete frames while messing with the time delay
2) Reduce the image quality
3) make the gif dimensionally smaller.

longer gifs tend to either be:
A) of less quality
B) exceeds the forum limit and was uploaded by a smod/admin

Well, banners aren't exactly my area of expertise but I know that you will need to to have animated gif file to have an animated banner.

I'm just not sure if you wanted to insert a gif into a banner or create an animated sig.

In either case, you will need imageready to convert the images into an animated gif/banner. There are other programs, but since I use Image Ready, I thought I suggest it.

how can you make a video file into an avi file?

Wait, do you want to turn a video file clip into an animated avatar?

You need image ready and virtualdub. the links are provided on the first post.

Or do you want to convert a certain video file into an avi file? When I mean avi, I mean formats such as avi, mpeg, mp4, mkv, OGM, ect......

If you want a program to change video formats, then SUPER (http://www.erightsoft.com/S5E01.html) will let you convert media files into any other format you wish.

I'm not sure if you could. I downloaded CS Photoshop with Image Ready. As for a seperate download I'm not quite certain.

And image ready could be used in that instance. That example you placed up are just a set of frames/images set to motion.

Yes, you can. Unless you plan to remake that gif and don't want to recapture the frames. But I'd thrash it because the frames file size can get quite large.

I used to have that problem when I started to want to make gifs of the series...make sure all of your codecs are up to date...especially xvid and divx....if that doesn't fix the problem...make sure that your virtual dub itself is up to date....and that should work.

I really can't remember what I did first...or which one worked...but I know one of those did work...>__>....

of course I'm assuming your getting an error that causes your entire virtual dub to crash and exit the program?

I made this tutorial about a year ago, but I think it's about time I bring place it on this forum.

First of all, I would like to give credit where credit is due, I used a tutorial from NF member as a template for my tutorial. (Credits AOI on Naruto Forums)

Okay, I'm going to provide an overview on how to create animations with imageready and Virtualdub.
Well, be creating this:

http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/2220/bleachfaces9ky.gif (http://www.imageshack.us)

Before you start, here's what you need:

1. Virtualdub: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/virtual....3.zip?download (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/virtualdub/VirtualDub-1.6.3.zip?download)

2. Imageready: It's included with Photoshop
You can buy the program, or certain programs like limewire can be very useful in acquiring it.

3. If you didn't figure it out, you will also need a avi video file :P

4. Create a folder on your desktop...called "artwork"

Once you extract the Virtualdub file, double-click the file and click on run

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8341/kiratut18xz.th.jpg (http://img23.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kiratut18xz.jpg)

Go to File---> open Video File.....(or CONTROL + O)

END OF STEP 1
i cant find BEGIN and END... hehe

Excalibur
08-02-2006, 03:20 AM
just go to edit-> set selection start at thet begining of your image sequence....then go to the end and go to edit -> set selection end and then save image sequence as...

or you can just click on the screencap he provided in that post and see that he labeled where BEGIN and END are...:oh

they are also known as mark in and mark out and they are inbetween the the part that shows you what frame your on and the scene forward button

You have to crop your image to have the dimensions (width and lenght) even.

Select the Marquee Tool and make sure that "fixed Aspect ratio" is selected.

I asked a question, but I figured it out for myself, so I edited out. And it looks like I haven't because it isn't working for me. ;_______;

So I'll ask it again;

This part -

Go to the desired timeframe and press BEGIN (the begin of your image sequence). After that, keep clicking on 1 FRAME FORWARD until you think the action has stopped. After that click END (the end of your image sequence)

The begin & end buttons. Which ones are those? I know, really n00bish question. I already know the 1 frame forward.

:laugh...if you click the screencap he provided...he points out where they are...xD

but they are the little black bookend buttons that look like half arrows to the left of where it tells you the frame number.

and you don't need to click the one frame forward button for that other step...that takes way too long. Instead, hold down the arrow key on your keyboard in the direction you want to go....so once you start your image sequence, hold down the right arrow key until you get to the end and then press the end button.

edit - My first go at it.

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/1323/airew7.gif

Size - 1.10 mb. =[
And it's pretty slow. >_<

Excalibur
10-06-2006, 03:26 PM
it looks nice...

a few tips to reduce the size and speed it up at the same time:

I hope this makes sense...>__<

In imageready, go to the beginning of your image sequence and highilight the first frame. Delete it. Now go to the second frame which was your third frame before you deleted the first frame, and delete that. Continue this process all the way to the end of your sequence.

By doing this, you effectively reduce the number of frames by half, thus reducing the file size of the gif and speed it up.

If you feel that's too tedious...go into the folder that you saved your image sequence in and delete every odd numbered frame *like file img00001 and img00003 and img00005, etc* and then import the folder as frames into imageready....

some gifs, you'll be able to do that more than once without causing too many problems. If the gifs seems to be moving too fast...this is when you mess with the time delay.

To reduce the file size even more, you either need to mess with the file size itself with image -> image size

or the actual quality

Might be a codecs issue. Have you got XVID codecs installed?
Im using XVID and CCCP
download the xvid codec, install it, and then try again.

understood. I will try it.

Kira's tutorial rocks. helped me a lot.
i just couldnt cut video in VirtualDub, instead i just edited the video file in ulead videostudio 9 and pasted it in virtualdub.
i did an animated gif, but its size is a bit biger than expected. will just diminish its quality.

^what do you mean by "cut" the video in vdub?...do you mean taking out certain parts...because you can do that in vdub.

it's sort of the bizzaro world of saving the image sequence....you select the first frame you wish to cut out from the video....and then select the ending frame to make an image sequence. Then you press delete on your keyboard. Then go to video->compression and select either divX or xvid and then go to file -> save as avi

ok. here are some gif's i made. no matter how i try its size again is too big. could someone tell me how to make it smaller size.

details of second gif: around 60 frames, color 32, and as u see frame size isnt very big. what else i can do to reduce their size?

i'm very new in this, so i just try to learn softwares.

edit: i just noticed the black strips and i can easily cut them out, so just ignore them.

only avi files work...you will have to convert any other file type into avi...

ok. here are some gif's i made. no matter how i try its size again is too big. could someone tell me how to make it smaller size.

to reduce file size, if you have already messed with color, then there are two things you can try:

1) chaning the image size by going to image -> imagesize and reducing that.

2) deleted every odd frame. This process can be handled two ways...the fastest is just to delete every odd numbered frame in your folder that you keep your frames....the longer way is when you are in imageready, start at frame one, delete it, now move to frame 2 which was your old frame 3 before you deleted frame one and delete that frame, and then continue through your image sequence until you reach the end. This effectively reduces the number of frames in half and thus reduces the file size. Then see what it looks like in action, if it appears too fast, then mess with the time delay of the frames to slow it down.

I would say get the image sequence again and follow the steps in my previous paragraph and see what happens.

that is exactly how i do it,i even delete like this: 2 and 3, 5 and 6, 8 and 9, like this to reduce file size. so, it means that is all i can do. thanks anyway.

another question. in imageready, how do i put border lines around the pic? the same as in my avy. i searched all over it, couldnt find.

here is example and wanna do the same on it

use the rectangle tool

go to the top and you'll see a drop down menu next to the word "style"

select 3 pt black inner no fill, make a rectangle around your gif, then select 2 pt white inner no fill and make another rectangle, finally select 1pt black inner no fill and make one last rectangle

as for your other problem....sometimes you just have to do that more than once...I would say doing that process three times is the max...before it gets a bit jumpy.

again...messing with the actual dimentsions may be the only option left for you.

hmmmm....sadly...when it comes to text...I really haven't been able to find a good way to select specific frames...it may just be as easy as selecting/deselecting an option...

but I've been stuck opening up the frames separately in Photoshop or paint and adding the text into that before even importing the frames into imageready...

when i do it through my user cp thingy on narutofourms it only shows the first picture in the gif rather than the entire set. whats wrong?

also, i have a medium sized picture(200 KB) for my sig that i want to upload but when i upload it it comes out really small (100x100). and i've been trying to see if i could link either my sig or gif from an outside source (photobucket) by using html code but nothing comes out except text. how do i fix this?

any answers would be greatly appreciated.

Excalibur

A) as for your avy, it does not fit the limit for non senior members, thus why it only shows as a single image. If you get it to be 100kb and 100x100, then it will show as a gif in your avatar.

B) as for your sig...html code doesn't work on the forum...you need to use the vB code it gives you. Go to www.imageshack.us to upload your gif...and copy and paste the code that is with "hotlink for forums (1)" and paste that code into your signature and it will display as a gif.

C) don't quadruple post...the edit button is there so that you don't break the rules like that.

Gah, I hate this codec thing. When I try to open a Windows Media Player File, it says it can't locate the decompressor for the format 'DIV3'... and I've downloaded the divx codec, xvid codec, and the pdv codec. Nevertheless, it still doesn't work. Is there anything I have to do with the downloaded codec folders or anything like that? I'm just leaving them on the desktop.

Excalibur
01-07-2007, 06:34 PM
well...I notice that you didn't actually download the div3 codec....that maybe the other issue...xD

you have divX but not div3...they are technically two different codecs...xD

Volken
01-07-2007, 07:49 PM
That makes sense. :oh

Does anyone have a link to a place I can dl the div3 codec? When I google it, I'm just getting divx codecs.

EDIT: I figured out that I actually do have the right codec. It's just that the Naruto episodes I downloaded from some other site don't work, and the ones from dattebayo do. Thanks anyway for the help :)

Excalibur

div3 is an old low motion variation of divX...that's why divX always pops up...but there is a way to get it separately...but it is much easier to just download a different version of what you were trying to get.

Afaik, no. But I set up an action to select the next frame and delete it, that way you can just press a shortcut over and over until its done. With a lot of frames, you can set up an action that deletes every other frame five times or something like that :)

No prob. :amuse

And for gifs with large amounts of frames, there's an easier way to do this, although it involves starting from scratch.

First, open up VirtualDub again, open the file you used to make the gif, and set the start and end points again. Then, go to Video --> Frame Rate... Once there, select "Process every other frame (decimate by 2)" and click OK. Then continue as you normally would to make the gif. This automatically deletes every other frame for you, when you save the images (well, not delete really; it just saves every other frame instead of saving all the frames).

If you still find it too slow, then try making the gif with "Process every third frame (decimate by 3)" selected in VDub or selecting and entering a number bigger than 3 in the "Decimate by" box, which will delete even more frames (which one you want depending on how many frames you need to delete/how slow your gif is going).

^once you have it open....
if you want it to be an avi, select video output to be avi
drag and drop the file you wish to convert in the work box
then choose "encode"
select divX as the decompressor

It will then convert the file. You can find the converted file in the output folder in the SUPER folder in your program files.

God, I can't wait to become a Senior member. You have so many privileges....

It's useless to use a gif if I'm not a Senior member, because of the size limits

Thanks again

Indeed, being a normal member makes it hard to make Animated Gifs for Avatars. 100 kbs only allows basically 7 - 9 frames of animation.. The only way to make a good gif for your avatar is a loop gif like this: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/Acid-Insanity/Animationz/Gear2.gif

Thanks for the awesome tutorial....and i'd like to know how to add name to the animation in the animated avatar...like a name for instance in one of the animated avatars.

Just make a new layer on top of all the other ones, and put the text on it.

A screen shot comparison from Kira Yamato would really help alot.

I made this tutorial about a year ago, but I think it's about time I bring place it on this forum.

First of all, I would like to give credit where credit is due, I used a tutorial from NF member as a template for my tutorial. (Credits AOI on Naruto Forums)

Okay, I'm going to provide an overview on how to create animations with imageready and Virtualdub.
Well, be creating this:

http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/2220/bleachfaces9ky.gif (http://www.imageshack.us)

Before you start, here's what you need:

1. Virtualdub: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/virtual....3.zip?download (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/virtualdub/VirtualDub-1.6.3.zip?download)

2. Imageready: It's included with Photoshop
You can buy the program, or certain programs like limewire can be very useful in acquiring it.

3. If you didn't figure it out, you will also need a avi video file :P

4. Create a folder on your desktop...called "artwork"

Once you extract the Virtualdub file, double-click the file and click on run

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8341/kiratut18xz.th.jpg (http://img23.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kiratut18xz.jpg)

Go to File---> open Video File.....(or CONTROL + O)

END OF STEP 1

i do not understand! how do i get my desired time frame? where is 1 frame button? someone please help! :cry

just grab the scrubber and scrub through the video. Also if you hold down Shift while scrubbing it goes much faster..and if you want to be precise look at the screen cap that Bass provided

@Vegitto: Just delete the repeating frames.

@@lk3mizt:
Make a new layer on top of the other ones, increase the canvas size, then draw the border lines on the new layer.

There we go

question, why were there so many double frames?

and is there anyway to get rid of the 2 black bars?

just use the "Crop" tool and crop them out.

Renegade
03-04-2007, 02:51 PM
Or you can adjust the canvas size so that it cuts them out.

Vegitto-kun

cropping is easier

Too bad I really lack any skill with putting names on them

Looks great to me. There's still a little black you missed on the bottom though, unless you did it on purpose.

@lk3mizt
03-04-2007, 03:54 PM
how do you increase the canvas size? or are you talking about increasing the image size?

edit: and what do you mean by draw a border? sorry i'm soo new to this! :P

Renegade

Image > Canvas size

I suggest increasing it 4 pixels in width and 4 pixels in height. Once you're on the new layer, select the line tool, uncheck anti-aliased at the top, and set the weight to 1 pixel. Zoom in and draw the border on the outermost edges of the canvas, preferrably in black. Then set the color to white and make white lines between the border and the actual picture, incase it isn't white already.
