I've read some of the manga, but I've never seen the anime. Despite it being about tennis (something I really don't like), I like the manga pretty well.

well if you like tennis and you like naruto. you will probably like prince of tennis. the tennis matchs are sort of like naruto battles. drawn out, indepth, with lots of strategy, techniques and flashbacks with explanation. over all I thought it was pretty good. One character named fuji is almost like rurouni kenshin with a tennis racket. quite amusing actually

I know exactly what you mean. I'm the same way with basketball and this basketball manga I once read made me want to tear the thing in half.

I must agree with that as well. i play some tennis but never have been very fanatical about sports. however, i dont try to think about it just take it for what its worth. The made up evil bad guy tennis players out to get you and breaking all laws off physics tennis moves. definitely not like really tennis, but hey its a show. hmm, I guess the main reason though that naruto is so badass though is you cant be a ninja that jumps tree to tree evereyday :)

i play tennis, but your statements surprise me a lot. the crazy shots that the PoT players hit are really funny to me, and most of the time i laugh at how ridiculous it is, but its all out of good humor. i dont think anyone should feel offended by it, if you are, you might be taking anime a bit too seriously. and i dont think you should feel that tennis is being disgraced by PoT, because in an old tennis magazine i have, they wrote an article about PoT, and a main goal of PoT to to generate fans of the support. i have to say PoT has the best filler episodes ever. they show depth to the characters and are usually extremely funny. the downside to watching PoT is that anime-otakus subs it. they dont have a normal schedule, so sometimes you wait for a month for the next episode to be released.

Lol yeah this anime makes up its own special moves but hey it fun to watch. But they do talk about how some of the top tennis players play there game. Like Hewitt. hahah "C'MON!".. its not realistic but its fun to watch. And its a kids show so yeah what do you expect.

Prince of Tennis is a good anime. Obviously, many of the techniques are not realistic, but it is kind of cool to watch them. Also, some pro players, like Pete Sampras, and the Williams are mentioned... Beside it is very funny, specially the "Inui Remix Deluxe...blah blah juice".
Fuji is quite awesome with his triple counter... But Tezuka is at another level...

Why on earth would you possibly think that any anime series will be completely realistic. I for one do not watch anime for an animated carbon copy of something I could see live action. Anime offers you something different, where the normal rules do not apply, which can be easily done because of the nature of anime.

Prince of tennis is an amazing series, it has all the action of Naruto, the comedy moments akin the Excel saga (like Puri puri family) just with tennis rackets (and breifly with bowling balls and snooker cues).

It is not in spite of the outragious and impossible (well, impossible in our world) techniques that are used that makes PoT great, it is because of them. Would you really watch 150 (so far) episodes of an anime where normal tennis was being played, with all of the special techniques removed? No, you could just tune into the latest tennis tournament.

Well, it's tennis. The story is basically about Seigaku going to the finals. And W-Dreamers has subbed (Not really, the subs came from Hong Kong) episodes 138-152 (Excluding 151), but, you should only watch them if you want to know what's going to happen. Otherwise, stick with Anime Otakus.

I've red parts of the manga and am now watching the anime, im at ep 70 or something :P I like the anime, its a typical sports anime where they throw in cool sounding tecnuiqes and i have to say, i love it. This has to be one of my favorite animes of all time (along with Love Hina and Naruto of course). I didn't think they could do an anime about tennis at first but I realized I was wrong once I watched about 15 episodes. I am currently still watching the series via the slow ass sub group (anime-otakus). I am also pretty sad that they had the last episode of it awhile ago :(

anyway the w-dreamers subs are pretty crappy in quality..at first i thought they were chinese bootlegs like OP eps that is floating around but someone told me that they actually sub them..oh well..if you watch an episode you can see how bad they are, first PoT has quite of bit of english in it especially during this current arc and so when they say english you fully understand them but the subs they put on them are way off

example... when Sengoku Kiyosumi (in the subs they call him Oishi which is the wrong name...oishi didnt make the invitational team..plus all the characters refer to him as Sengoku-kun throughout the ep so i dont know who they got the names mixed up) plays Bobbi Maxx (they use the name Pobi Marx even the announcer says bobbi maxx)...bobbi talks trash in english

what he says is "Hey Sissy, Im gonna beat you flat" the subs says "Coward..Ill beat you"..i can understand the japanese to english translation to be different and off but to not even quote his english correctly is sad...anyway this is from Episode 153...AnimeRevolution released 153 and if you watch that one and compare it to W-Dreamers you will see a huge difference..there are other things too like how they dont call certain shots by the real name even though the shots are in english

I think Anime Otakus does the best job but they are pretty slow..AnimeRevolution does the a good job but almost equally slow..i hope they both can finish PoT soon

and for the person who said the ending sucked, the series isnt over...According to TV Tokyo, they have no intentions of ending this anime series, but rather, is facing technical difficulties on how to continue on the story because the manga is over and are not sure how to go about prolonging the story..best guess is that the series could get another season or at the very least OVAs

Prince of Tennis is a great anime. It's funny, has a little drama, great drawing, and all those other good ingredients that make an excellent anime. (To the person(s) who said they didn't like PoT because it doesn't show real tennis:) About it not 100% realistic in potraying tennis, I don't really care, just like I don't care how Initial D doesn't use 100% realistic physics and what-not, or how Eyeshield 21 doesn't follow the real ways of football. They're all fun to watch, and that's good enough.

I really love the filler episodes in PoT. Prince of Bowling, Billiards, PingPong, Baseball were all great. I don't like the chibi fillers as much and skipped one or two of those.

The Anime ended at ep 178. There is a PoT movie.

Im trying to verify that story myself of the anime deviating too much from the manga and thats one reason why they stopped. I love this series, hated to see it end. Same with Hikaru no Go, loved the series and they both left you with wanting more after it ended.

Yeah, but Prince of Tennis is kinda...overly dramatic. (Wins an award for that...) I mean, no one can jump THAT high without super shoes or something like that. And you necessarily can do Drive B...If you know how to and if you don't care for your shoes. Then again, Zero Shiki is real and you can do that. As well as Hadoukyuu (I can do that) and Tsubame Gaeshi (You can only do this is real life with really good eyes and a lot of tennis exp.). People say that you can do it and a lot of people cannot do Tsubame. Anyways, I think Fuji is given "fake" moves in the manga that really can't be done in real life. I mean, Higuma Otoshi. You would have to have eyes in the back of your head.

And they're not in high school...They're only in Jr. High...>.> I mean, if you're a true fan of PoT you wouldn't care about their heights and whatnot. You love the show and stuff...That's all that really matters...

..Dirve B is impossible to slide on the gorund for that long and then get up.. hitting the ball in a b type spinning motion... ??? impossible.. even nadal on clay court wouldn't come close.

I've actually done zero shiki, hadokyu, tsugume gaishi and attempted rondo...

Rondo is impossible and beyond absurd....

zero shiki is the most frustrating thins in the universe basically you first have to learn to hit a perfect slices that when falls has almost no spin.. so basically you need to hit a dead ball shot... actually that all I learned and then just one day got very luckily watching the ball roll backwards..

Tsugame gashi is very well not easy... and it's can't really be done to the God like extent fuji does it but.. you can do it however it hurts your wrist and palm to a demented degree.

Hadokyu equal easy.. dash daokyu is hilarious though I tried it and me and the guy at the tennis court was just giving me and my friend this look like we where crazy.

Ps these moves could be learned by pro's however they would only be able to use them on balls hit extremly slowly.. not on shot coming at you at 70 or 80 mph which isn't even that fast by pro standards.

OH YEAH AND BOOMRANG SNAKE EQUALS A SHOT OF THE GODS.. no one will ever be able to hit that.

... Oh I also kinda wonder about this whole height thing... as though being one year older justifies like a foot diffrences.. lol

short players tend to be quicker then tall guys.. more stamina so echizen had like an advatge over the tall guys not a disadvantage

It really didnt bother me that much after a while, I realised how ridiculous it was, but they dont act or look or seem in anyway like a Junior High Kid, so I just look over the fact that the author decided to be strange and place kids that seemed more like High school or even college kids in a Jr. High school, age dosent actually matter in POT world. :)

Gee...Tsubame Gaeshi...Well, I can do an attempted Higuma Otoshi. (Only to hit the ball somewhere else...XD) Then again, their moves aren't really that hard at all to do... But Fuji-sama has mostly "fake" moves. Like controlling the wind with Hakugei and I know for sure his Fourth Counter, "Kagerou Zutsumi"* is do-able in real life. (So much fun to do) And I do believe it is 'like' the Hadoukyuu, but it's not. He doesn't stand in that position (he's not a power-house type person...X_X scary if he was) and he uses both hands on his racquet and exerts all his power in one wave (blast, blow, whatever you want to call it). Although, I picture it as a blue lightning move like "Chidori" or it can be like Naruto's "Ransengan". (I believe that's the spelling. I just got into Naruto..After I bought my giant Naruto plushie..XD)^^

Anyways, the only thing I haven't watched is the last episodes (which are like only 33 left) and the movie. Everyone is waiting for the movie...X_x I want to see it.

Dragon Ball Z on the tennis courts = Tennis no Ouji-sama's nickname. I'm not joking. People are calling it this and if you've seen the last episode...XD The running on rocks...A little too dramatic...

Well, Prince of Tennis is a dramatic show...A little...OVERLY dramatic to some people. I laugh though..XD. I'm glad Fuji isn't THAT dramatic like Ryoma or Tezuka....

Anyways, Fuji's b-day is in like...3 years...X_X No...That is like....So long away. Oh well. Then again, Fuji would be the shortest if Ryoma was not there.

And the PoT people are getting old...ER. (Not to be mean..) Tezuka...he looks...really old. Oh well, he's normal..To me at least. Anyways, Fuji-sama is my fave. character. ^^

I can do a lot of the PoT moves...Just have to practice them. And I do not want to CRUSH the ball like Kirihara and Fuji did...(Well, Fuji did that because he got mad O_O AMAZING!) Anyways, it's a dramatic show. It's fun to watch though.

And the PoT people are actually tall for their age. (Especially Kabaji...He's the tallest...X_X out of all the Jr. Highs...He's in my grade...X_X) People are...getting shorter year after year where I am. I mean, the kids use to be so tall. Then there are little kids coming into school and they are like...midgets...X_X There are hardly any tall people I know. Except my science teacher who was 6'7". O_O But he looks short now. Oh well.

I want to learn how to hit the Twist Serve. It looks fun. Then there's Tezuka Serve! (And there's a game where you can fight with the PoT people. *laughs* Jump Super Stars...Has Naruto, Yugioh, Yu Yu, PoT, etc. Explain more later if you want) Then there's Fuji's Disappearing Serve.

Number one reason why Fuji's moves are so horrible in the games...They don't really know the speed of Fuji's moves. In the games...his moves are so slow and easy to return..X_x So SAD. Anyways, the Disappering Serve..Is really easy to return...in the game. And I can do a Disappearing Serve in real life! So much fun!!! ^^

*Note: This was only shown in the manga part of the Nationals. Never in the anime. And it's my fave. counter! And "Kagerou" means Ant-lion....or something that dies early or quickly. Fuji...are you a Naruto fan to name it after an ant-lion??? You're really scaring me now..Anyways, Zutsumi..no one knows what that means..X_X So sad.

And on several PoT sites, you can find the manga there. (look around everywhere...They ARE everywhere) And Shonen Jump is so slow...You'll probably have to wait until 50 thousand years until they're at volume 30. (I don't think they'll release the fanbooks either...X_x)

Yea, I love the anime as well. I originally watched the anime all the way through til the end and I really wanted more. I actually didn't like how the series ended and when I heard about the manga and how a lot of the later events of the anime didn't happen in the manga, it really made me want to read it. So I read through the manga up to ch. 289, which is where the scanlations are right now. I can't wait for the next couple chapters cuz the current arc/matches are really good.

I finished the fansubs 1-178 in a little over a months time. and quickly moved to the OVA's and have enjoyed the series thoroughly. I have to say the only openings I enjoyed were "Long Way" and "Dreams Believer" . The National Championship OVA was pretty good as well. :amuse

As for the dub of the series, like I said before I've only seen the first episode, and watched 1-178 fansubbed. The networks usually take awhile to complete dub series. For example, Kodocha has 102 episodes, but only 26 episodes have aired on television. So, I'm not surprised that PoT is only on 52, which is a pretty decent amount IMO. Believe me, there are some great matches after 52, :nod

Inui's eyeballs? Maybe I'm missong something since I don't watch the dub much xDD

The only thing I know about Inui is that he utilizes data tennis. xD

The last meaningful match Inui had against his own teammates was probably in the intra ranking tournament defeating Momo and taking Tezuka to the limit. The last match I remember fondly was against his old doubles partner back in elementary school...(who is part of Rikkai team).

Future matchups to look forward to:

Ryoma versus Atobe (unofficial match but still awesome)
Fuji versus Kirihara
Ryoma versus Sanada (Ryoma's true potential comes out as well as a new technique)

In short...yes, the episodes are worth it.


If you really want to skip episodes...skip the recreation II arc (129-135), but if you do, you'll miss the backround story of Ryoma's father and his journey in America and why he quit, not to mention the team going to germany to visit Tezuka during rehab.

But my favorite filler arc is the junior selection arc (basically a camp with all the best players in Japan to decide who will represent Japan against the West coast U.S. team)

You get to see players like Atobe and Sanada go head to head to see whose worthy of being Tezuka's worthy rival.

And Kirihara who was a mean bastard against Fuji and Tachibana
shows a new side in the filler arc in a practice match against Ryoma.

And of course the actual match against the west coast USA team. the team leader being Kevin whose father lost to Ryoma's father many years ago is out for revenge.

In the tourny we see Sanada and Atobe play doubles :omg

and Kirihara and Ryoma :omg, if you want to know what circumstances lead to Ryoma having to step in and finish the match then you have to watch this filler arc :P take on Kevin. Kirihara's phantom ball is enough of a reason to see this filler arc :noworry

Then there's the intraranking tourny to decide which members will participate in the National tourny.

We finally see Fuji versus 100% healed Tezuka :spaz

It took 3 episodes to finish that match O_O

and of course Ryoma heading off to the U.S. Open but coming back to japan (after the prelims) for just one day to exercise the demons of his past (aka take on and defeat a fully healed Tezuka before he can face the finals of the U.S. open)

My favorite matches of the Seigaku vs Rikkadai arc had to be Kirihara vs Fuji (serious Fuji versus evil Kirihara :spaz)

Yeah, but Kirihara will have to bring it out of Fuji, because Fuji rarely gets serious unless he's playing to avenge someone. In other words, Kirihara will have to do something to piss him off during the match :wink

And the National Championship tourny is on a totally different level. You have to see it to believe it. After this arc (116-128), the rest are fillers up until episode 166 where they have the intra ranking tourny to decide the order for the national championships.

I wouldn't skip the fillers though. I especially loved the U.S. west coast versus Japan Jr. tournament. You'll see some of your favorite players from the series playing together to take on the U.S. And the selection camp arc that appears before the actual tournament where players from Japan participate to decide which 7 will represent the team against the U.S.

Sanada and Atobe doubles match (forgets their opponents names)

and Kirihara (&Ryoma) versus Kevin Smith :omg

2 on 1 (not at the same time) seems weird but you'll see why that happened. Yes, was actually cheering for Kirihara....whose a really cool guy and nice guy when he's not all evil like xDD

I was in the same boat. A good friend recommended the anime to me a couple years ago, but I couldn't imagine an anime about tennis could be entertaining (heck, I couldn't have imagined Eyeshield 21 as entertaining either), but I started downloading the episodes on a whim and loved it ever since. I even got into the manga earlier this year.

Well, it's to be expected that as time goes on the animation quality would get better. Factor in the fact that OVA's are generally of higher quality and it's understandable that they're usually preferred. Not to mention the games usually last only one episode, while some of the games in the series lasted as long as 4-5 episodes :lmao

Same here. Though sometimes I prefer the manga version (Kaidoh is one example. He looks too creepy in the anime. xD).

Anyway, I've read the manga over halfway through, but I'm just at episode 8 in the anime... and I noticed that the episodes move at a pretty slow rate. -___-;;

Parts of the manga are better, but I think that there are certain portions of the anime that exceed the canon material in quality, as well. It really depends on what your priorities are or why you are starting the story in the first place. The anime almost parodies some of the situations in the manga, taking them to an extreme in order to make them more humorous. And, it also provides deeper character development in how the writers choose to prolong certain matches or add dynamism to characters that were barely touched on in canon (i.e. the development of the Higa Middle School team in the OVAs). However, the manga is less ridiculous and includes some great situations that never get shown in the anime (i.e. the Niou-Yagyuu switch).

They both have their good qualities; I think, it's a bit too rash to say one is actually superior to the other.

Well, the National tournament was handled a lot better in the manga than the anime for me.

Except for the first round with Higa Chuu. That was pretty well done in the anime

Tbh I enjoy the anime really a lot eventough it has a lot of exagerated techniques etc.. But it's anime not realistic.

But where it imo really shines, is the music.. The timing the track are all so well placed that it touches you soo much..

Like the final episode where ryoma just thanks the whole seigaku team was sooo good because of the music (and the voice actors too ofcourse) Perfect.

That's what they are in the process of releasing/working on right now, but I haven't been able to find any reliable future release dates. They've already finished the first episode of the last OVA with Ep 20, the Pre-Finals. But, sadly, I still haven't seen a downloadable raw for it. Since we are going to have this anime broadcasted in italy and there won't be a DVD edition, I was thinking to sync the audio from recorded show on to DVD raws, since the TV signal is really really bad... full of pixels!!
So I really need to do sync the audio onto the raws.....
