Creepy (especially the opening song is just.... Gives me the shivers.) Children are creepy overall, and the japanese are masters at making them even more so :p

I was thinking about making a topic for this, but since no-one else had made one yet I figured no-one else had been watching it. >_>;

Anyway, I like the series a lot. It's definitely turning out to be one of the most interesting anime of the season. It's very strange (and maybe a bit silly if you analyse it too much), but it is very successful in creating mystery, tension and... well, creepiness. And a group of psychotic young schoogirls trying to kill someone is pretty damn creepy. Add in a special guest appearance by 'Kenta-kun' (Colonel Sanders O_o) and you're onto a winner.

They kinda messed up with the character designs though.

I just watched this episode and I think it was pretty awesome. Those girls are definately up to something and whats with that bi polar attitude, its just creepy :)

Wooooot Episode 5! Finished watching and it definately did not dissapoint.

It seems they are going the 'separate storyline' route. You know, seeing as Keiichi, Rena, and Mion are all alive. A very interesting story seems to have unfolded this time. At first it seems like Shion is just a complex of Mion, but they are actually two people! All those weird lies...just...happened to be true. Hmmm....

The part where Mion 'pretends yesterday never happened' is interesting. Is she that jealous that Shion was flirting with Keiichi? Or is there something else...hmm...Shion sure had an EVIL smile when she said "Didn't I say so?".

Also, we can probably assume that the first scene is a huge forshadowing as the last one was. (What looks like)Rika-chan stabbing herself while Mion watches, laughing maniacally. O_O

-EDIT- Also, I'd just like to say that this series has me HOOKED more than anything I've watched in a while. The episode just came out tonight and I already can't stand waiting for the next one! XD

I have been watching this anime for about 4 days now. I watched the first 3 eps and thought it was pretty darn good. The intro song is growing on me; at first I thought it sounded pretty weird, plus with the weird clips of flowers... lol I was like :huh .

So yesterday I downloaded 4-6... 4 was freaking great... and 5 and 6 had me confused until I figured out that it was a different story of 'it'. PRETTY COOL THOUGH :oh . I accidently downloaded the ep 7 raw from searching it on google. I was like OH SHIT YAY another ep of higurashi..... *clicks*.

Wow, another great episode. I love trying to piece together the clues myself, but it's so hard. >_<

So, indeed, Mion is doing some ~evil~ here. Here are the events as far as I know

Day of Watanagashi:
-4 enter the storehouse.
-Later, Takano-san and Tomitake-san are killed.

Day 1 After:
-PhoneShion finds out in the morning about their deaths
-Village Chief leaves early in the morning to see doctor
-Train crash delays arrival so he barely makes it on time to meeting
-Village Chief Attends meeting
-Village Chief disappears after
-Shion goes missing (But what time? Before/After phone call?)
-PhoneShion calls Keichii to tell him they died

Day 2 After:
-Village Chief's disappearance discovered
-Keichii tells Rika
-PhoneShion calls Keichii to tell him she confessed to VC and that's why he is missing.
-Rika disappears ~7:00 according to Rena's estimate
-Keichii tells PhoneShion that he confessed to Rika at ~8:50.

First thing, PhoneShion is clearly Mion on the 2nd day after, and possibly the day before. We don't know when Shion went missing.

Second thing, at first I thought Mion was using Keichii for information, but Rika disappeared before the phone call. Which makes me wonder what Mion is trying to get from the conversations. Hmmmmmmm.

So whos taking bets on if K-kun is going to survive the next episode, the strange thing is if he was going to be murdered by the 'Curse', he'd have died/vanished on day 1.

The only way I think he'll survive is if Rena comes to his rescue in this arc because she's honestly the only one we've seen so far who can match and nullify Mion's super-scary-psycho rampage. Though Mion is talking waaaaay too composed for the visuals. I’m not sure what went wrong, but the dialogue just doesn’t fit the animation. Not crazy enough. Not loud enough. Not emo enough. If Mion did a “KEI-I-CHI!” scream like Mai’s Takumi, Suigintou’s Shinku, or Shinn’s Mayu, it would have been a 800,000 out of 10 on the emo facial contortion scale instead of a paltry 700,000.

Holy freak! Episode 10 came out only 2 days after episode 9! :nuts

After seeing ep. 9, I'm pretty sure it was Shion during the latter scene in ep. 7. I think Shion probably had feelings towards Satoshi, and ever since he disappeared, has blamed his disappearance on Sakoto, saying she's a cursed child and telling Keiichi to stay away from her. Mion didn't seem like a person who would blame a friend for something.

Also, the beginning was very... how do I put it... gruesome ?, even without the use of blood. I wonder if the animation studio is trying to top their previous beginning arcs.

Anyway, can't wait to watch episode 10! :nuts I love this series!

Maybe they have some kind of powers, like it seemed that Shion (or was it Mion?) could control people or something outside that restaurant. Perhaps when Keiichi touched Satoko she somehow knew he was going to be a victim of the curse or maybe because he touched her he will become a victim of the curse and therefore breaking down at the thought of loosing her substitute brother

Well, Sakoto is a victim of abuse, so I sort of saw it as a form of paranioa. Like how some people are so abused that they're afraid of people touching them, and they mistake it for a gesture of abuse. Maybe she thought Keiichi was going to hit her or something, since her uncle does seem pretty nasty. I hope he dies a very painful death at the end of this arc.

Actually I think that the gesture was a painful reminder of Satoshi, since there's been so many comparisons of Keiichi to Satoshi in this chapter. As to what that is... while with any other character I might suspect that they had killed Satoshi, but it seems to me that Satoko might've abandoned him before he was "demoned away." By whom, I'm not too sure. Shion seems the most likely suspect (since she was the truly deceptive one in the last chapter), but I'm seriously skeptical of that.

On a related note, I think that this series would be THE SERIES to watch this season were it not for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Although, it is possible for it to get more popular once Haruhi is over with in three weeks since there'll still be at least ten more weeks of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.

And if the title of the thread is going to be changed, shouldn't what is in paranthesis be The Moment the Cicadas Cry?

It's simple really. Episodes 1-4 is all one chapter, that being the "Spirited Away by Ogres" chapter. Episodes 5-8 marks the next story arc called "Watanagashi." Then after that is yet more stories, each one probably detailing on a certain character.

Saw episode eleven last night... and I'm again reminded of why I love this series so damn much.

Keiichi apparently knows how to use the bat quite well. Him actually killing Satoko's uncle showed that he can be as psychotic, determined, and have crazy facial expressions with the best of the killer lolis. His burial or the body and the laugh afterwards was brilliant.

The phone conversation with Mion beforehand was seriously unnerving. We do learn that Satoshi was certainly involved with something just a year prior. As to him being the one that killed Satoko's aunt... I have some doubts on that one. If there is one thing to keep in mind with this story, do not take everything at face-value.

And I think this episode proves why Takano is one of the creepiest characters in this whole thing. How anyone can look at her eyes and say any different is impossible.

Not much insight from me, but I'm still not quite awake yet.

Random musing on that...

I've skeptical about him dying at the end of Watanagashi. With that kick-ass and creepy ending, it is entirely possible that Mion/Shion (undecided as to who was who, but I'm guessing that it was the latter) appearing at his bedside like she did was all in Keiichi's mind. Doesn't make it any less frightening and tragic, though.

But then again this is all speculation, so we won't really know until we get the answer chapter for that one, which should be the sixth and last chapter of the series. We'll probably get the last two answers chapters (the seventh one, which is out, and the eight one, which is soon to be released) as OVAs or something.

I've been watching the first 10 episodes on YouTube. Then it starts deleted anime episodes and I'm forced to download the series. So I started out with Triad, and I had such awesome speeds for a series that had less than 20 seeders. I finished downloading the first 2 episode in about 30 minutes. Then I get to the next one and my speed sucks.

Anyway, my point is, this is how I decided to break up what fansubs to use:

For the Onikakushi-hen (Eps. 1-4) I use Triad's version.
For Watanganashi-hen (Eps. 5-8) I use Ayu's version
Then for the current arc (Eps. 8-13) I'll use Wind's version
And then back to Triad for the next arc, etc.

So, hahaha, I'm going to chance my subs every arc. :laugh

Well, Takano dies regardless if Kei-chan wanted that to happen or not. She's fated to get burned every arc, just like how Tomitake is fated to die every arc... and possibly Keiichi too. He just think he caused her death.

Anyway, I'll be happy if one of the characters dying was Oshi. He's such an ahole in this arc. But I guess this shows more of his character. If he thinks a person's a good witness and can be use as a source of information, he'll act all nice, but if not, then he's an asshole. :notrust

Summer of 2003

An elderly couple residing in Osaka Prefecture found a very old cassette tape as they were going through their son's belongings who died eight years ago. Their son (died at age of 47) was declared legally dead after they could not find his body when the fishing boat he was on capsized in 1995. In 2003, the elderly couple began to go through their son's belongings for storage after eight years of distraught. This was when they found the crucial cassette tape.

The deceased worked for a tabloid press from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, and it is believed that this tape was recorded when he was a reporter during that time.

The label on the tape reads "November 28, 1983 - Maebara Keiichi." It is believed to be a rare recorded interview with the sole survivor of the Great Hinamizawa Disaster that occurred in June of 1983. As the sole survivor of the Great Disaster, there was high interest at the time in obtaining information from him about what he saw and witnessed on that fateful night of June 21. Alas, there had been no word from his own words what he experienced...until this time.

Hence, it is expected that this tape recording will become a highly valuable source.

Kei: "...It's kinda hard to explain when I know that this conversation is being recorded."
Reporter: "Don't worry, don't worry. Okay, if I do this, you won't have to worry about looking at it recording now, right?"

(The quality of the recording suddenly drops after this. Perhaps he put some kind of covering over the recorder?)

Reporter: "Okay, let's begin. ...Let's start with this one. Keiichi-kun, where were you on the night of the Great Disaster?"
Kei: "...right past the back of the shrine...you go straight...there's this bridge. Right before entering the mountains. ....I fell off of that and lost consciousness."
Reporter: "Is that the night of the Great Disaster? More specifically, between the changing night hours from the 21st to the 22nd?"
Kei: "...No. It was in the morning of Tuesday the 21st. And I regained consciousness around noon the next day...so, I guess I was out of it for about a day and a half."
Reporter: "What were you doing there? I'm sure everyone would say the same but, that day was a weekday and that bridge was nowhere near your home or your school."
Kei: "........................................"
Reporter: "There are rumors that state that you knew about the Great Disaster beforehand, and you were making your way out of the village when you fell from the bridge."
Kei: "You've gotta be kidding me. Please do not say such things anymore."
Reporter: "I agree that it's nothing but baseless rumor. I'm sorry if I made you feel bad... Okay, next question. The bridge that you fell off of...on the map, that would make it....here right? It's the one on the back of the shrine, past through the forest path?"
Kei: "....I think so. ....I never go there so I can't say for sure though."
Reporter: "Hahahahaha. Well, it's a mystery then why you would go to such a place that you never went on a weekday morning."
Kei: "........................................"
Reporter: "And, this is the river that you had lost consciousness. However, do you know that this spot would be impossible for you?"
Kei: "....'Impossible'.... ....Again, .....'Impossible'....again? Again.... Still...."

(Maebara Keiichi mumbles "Impossible" over and over again for a while)

Kei: "...Why do you say it's....impossible?"
Reporter: "You know that the volcanic gas came from the lake overturn at Onigafuchi Marsh, right? Well, a certain scientist did a small scale simulation using a model, and he found an interesting thing."
Kei: "........................................"
Reporter: "The volcanic gas is much heavier than air, so it has properties similar to water in which it flows to lower and lower ground with regards to the surrounding terrain. The experiment was done to see how and where this gas engulfed the village in which certain amount of time. ....And the results of this experiment showed that the gas....well, it would've gone through right where you said you lost consciousness."
Kei: ".....I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you are trying to get at."
Reporter: "Basically, if you did indeed lost consciousness at this spot, it means you were subject to the deadly volcanic gas for the entire night. Therefore, the possibility of you losing consciousness at this location was ruled out."
Kei: "........................................"
Reporter: "I'll say it more bluntly. ...I think you might be lying. I think that during the Great Disaster, you hid yourself somewhere safe, and once the gas subsided, you went to the village to seek help from the SDF. ....How's that? Did I get it right?"

(The reported makes some jabs jokingly towards Maebara Keiichi for a bit, but all that is replied is a deep sigh)

Kei: ".....Well, even if that were true, ....I wouldn't be surprised."
Reporter: "Not surprised? ...What do you mean by that?"

It is noted that some skeptics doubt whether this recorded tape is really a genuine conversation done with Maebara Keiichi.

Kei: "....You said it yourself, didn't you? That it's 'impossible.' ....Well, in Hinamizawa, the 'impossible' is possible. ...There, a person who shouldn't be there exists. A person that should be dead, is alive. ...It's nothing strange in that place. ....I didn't imagine that I myself would be the proof that a person that should've died is still alive.... Hahahahahaha. A~hahahaha...HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
Reporter: "A-HAHAHAHAHAHA! HAhahaha..."

(The reporter and Maebara Keiichi laughs together for a while.)

In order to seek validity, this recording was presented to the relatives of the Maebara family. However the relatives was unable to give a definite answer in validating Maebara Keiichi's voice due to the low quality of the recording compounded by the long time that has passed since the Great Disaster.

Reporter: "Okay Keiichi-kun, let me change the subject. What do you think about the stories that proclaim the Great Disaster being the fifth year's curse of the Hinamizawa Serial Murders?"
Kei: "Oh, that can't be true because the fifth year's curse is myself."
Reporter: "Huh? Ahahahaha! What do you mean by that?"
Kei: "What do you mean..., I'm responding to your question."

There are also doubts about the date November 28 on the label of the tape.

Kei: "....I doubt you'll believe me but....that Great Disaster? Well, I caused it. ...I wished everyone in that village to die, and that's exactly what happened."
Reporter: "Hahahaha... Well now, that's a pretty spectacular story there."
Kei: "Spectacular? ....I guess that's an intersting way of saying it...."
