You should read the gash bell manga and watch the anime. I mean it's two experiences for the price of one, and the anime just adds stuff that is just plain hilarious. More hilarious than it is in the manga even. Victoreem and Coral Q are two examples of Gash Bell's level of epic win.

Also read half of Umineko episode 3... I swear to god, there's no way the anime adaption can live up to the VN. There's... just... so... much... stuff. If they don't add in every Phoenix Wright scene, I'm gonna be pissed! They can get rid of the scenes where the adults discuss embessaling for 3 hours, but Battler playing lawyer must be animated in all its glory!

Yeah. That's an obstacle with one of my friends. Truly, those boring parts don't even matter. I think it starts getting better when Battler and his cousins talk about Beatrice's painting. After that, IIRC, it gets better and better. Day 2 is officially the point where it starts becoming better than Onikakushi-hen in most people's opinions. Whoever the murderer is, he/she manages to be creepier than Rena IMO.

Episode 2 and 3 are good all the way through luckily enough. ADD, magic, supernatural Phoenix Wright, and Battler hitting on the Ass Sisters ahoy!

Finished the first episode of Umineko. I really enjoyed it. It started slow as I said in a previous post but it doesn't take too long to pick up. The ending caught me by surprise. I did not expect it to end so abruptly. Now to start episode 2.

Ronove's pretty much Edgeworth or pretty close at least. He's on Beatrice's side but often helps Battler with his case. This is kinda similar to what Edgeworth's done on more than one occasion. That and he's likeable as well.

Ultimately, though, it's Battler and Virgilia VS Beatrice and Ronove, Battler and Beatrice being the leaders and Virgilia and Ronove being helpers but never attackers. Virgilia would be Maya ultimately, so I guess that would make Ronove kinda a mix of Maya and Edgeworth ultimately.

Ronove just doesn't have that same cool and epicness that Edgeworth has though, but then again Edgeworth is on a level all his own anyways.

...but so far, you're right. But in his defense, he's only appeared for one episode, so he's got five more to appear in. Kanon, my second favorite character, needed two episodes for me to appreciate, and the third episode makes him even more badass, and I'm sure his progress'll just keep getting better. That's an example of one character getting more likeable over time, and it's happened with other characters. Ultimately, most of the character at least development in character, badassness, or intelligence once per episode.

Ronove would probably be my fourth favorite after Battler, Beatrice, and Kanon. He's pretty important as well, so the potential to be better than Edgeworth is there. We will see what happens.

The next episode's supposed to add more characters than previous installments. I really hope that it's Higurashi characters. Mainly cause I wanna see them tie up that loose end about Rika being taller and having big breasts and stuff.

He only makes things more complicated by believing that instead of examining that as a possibility. It sort of feels like until he accepts that, the battle between the two will run in circles. I really liked the "red text" mechanic. Knowing that's the absolute truth makes it easier for you try and figuring it out without wondering if what's being said is bullshit. But since you can use a play on words, it doesn't give the answer away.

The beginning of 2 was a lot better than 1 but I preferred the last half of 1 to 2. 2 didn't have the impact 1 had. But that's partly because you already have a vague idea how the story will play out. Regardless, 2 was still a great game. I wonder how the hell the anime is going to handle the "red text." It's gonna be hard to make a good adaptation. To be honest, I don't have much faith.

I think I'll wait for the rest of 3 to be translated before starting it..

Well, if you want to know how Battler's case ends up...

He's forced to accept that one of the 18 did it in ep. 3. He ultimately gets more and more objective as time goes on.

And as for an anime adaptation... I can just imagine Beatrice talking and the red words appear over her head or something. Maybe they list them at the end of each episode or something?

But yeah, I dunno how well they'll pull this off. It seems that generally with Visual Novels you either get crap adaptations (Tsukihime) or watered down adaptations (Chaos;head or Fate/Stay Night). In the case of Umineko, this is exceptionally easy to screw up because Ryukishi really did his homework. He somehow made the crime more impossible than Christie or Carr stories...

Even though I haven't read the VN yet, I can infer that Onikakushi was likely butchered from the original material. How were we supposed to know that this was a hallucination? The only clue was the lost needle.

I think the anime people should be told the solution beforehand so they can at least weed out useless clues. It'll ruin the mystique, but better the useless clues be tossed out than the useful ones.

I never had difficulty with this so I dunno what problem you're having exactly, but I'll try to help nonetheless.

Question 1. If you installed the game, the patch's contents should be a folder IIRC. You place that folder inside the Umineko folder.

Question 2. Yes. You open the game using the onscriptor.exe in the patch folder rather than the game's .exe.

So in other words, install umineko, place the patch folder in the program folder, and play the vn using onscriptor.exe. That's what I remember, keep in mind. I would dl the patch again myself, but for some reason, search engines are only giving me ads, not actual authentic websites for some reason...

I grew impatient and read what's been translated of episode 3. So far episode 3 is my favorite and I totally did not see that twist coming. When Eva found the gold. I was like okay, this is a delusion or a dream, right? It can't be that easy. Of course I know it won't stop the murders because they're not done by Beato. It's extremely surprising for someone to solve the riddle this early. And so much information was learned from speaking in red. I can see why Umineko is praised so much. It's extremely good and it continues to get better. I only hope the anime is half as good.

So I finished episode 1 earlier today and WHOA!!!! So f***ing awesome! I feel like the same as I did when I watched Higurashi for the first time.

So I can't help but believe there are supernatural elements in the murders. I mean, the way the murders were done just seems so impossible to accomplish without supernatural elements. For most of the episode up until the 6th and higher Twilights, I really thought it had to be done by human means. But then the later murders just seems so impossible. And the whole black magic thing. But I just can't imagine Ryukishi07 using only supernatural elements to explain the murder mystery like that.

Speaking of murders... geez were the murders horrific. Does it get worse in the later chapters? I read in some places that one of the murders in episode 2 is a lot worse.

And further onwards. Let's see... In Higurashi, we had Rules X, Y, and Z governing its universe that had to be overcome to solve things. In Umineko, it seems as if the rule is "the more risk there is in the game, the greater the magic?"

Oh yeah, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the BMG. Gah, it's so wonderful. I really really really wish DEEN would use it in the anime, but I don't think it will. I especially like the track used when the murders are revealed. And the happy one... and a lot of others. They're all so good. :cry


Anyway, can't wait to get started on episode 2. :nuts

...wow... I wonder why they left out all the stuff they did. The sheer amount of awesome in all of their games just boggles my mind.

For instance, there's one scene where they're playing a game, and they take a penalty card out everytime they lose. So he's wearing all those goofy clothes while patting the principal's bald head, getting him beat up.

And the anime seemed to totally ignore Rena's shananigan where she punches people or takes public property. It's amusing as hell!

That's because Kai had a more faithful pace to the source material. Higurashi is not all about horror and killing. A good portion of it is the club activities. But even the first season had near full episodes of nothing but "lol random XD" so I think it's silly for you to complain about Rei's first OVA.

As for the club games vs mindfuck issue... The anime's always kinda done it to an extreme. The visual novel does it in a way that the light-hearted games only make it more fucked up when shit goes down. It makes seeing light-hearted friends like Rena and Mion become creep all the more sad/scary/etc. The anime, for the most part, didn't show this very well as it was only obsessed with the horror as opposed to the humorous parts that made it all the crazier.

All they would need to do is adjust the timing so it fits the new raw. Something that could be done in a few hours.

I know WinD and lambda are trying to release relatively quickly (considering they're both quality groups), and Ayu has always been extremely slow.

I'd say the need is about equal if we're including Matsuri and Kizuna into the mix since it'd be the equivalent of a third season (an actual third season, not just one relatively story arc with two filler arcs).

Umineko has four arcs unreleased as anime as of now.
Higurashi has seven. 2 for Rei. 3 for Matsuri. 2 For Kizuna.

The Matsuri ones I'd really love to see as they are authentically Question and Answer arcs rather than... random epilogue, filler, or sidestory arcs.

Also, Clannad, Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime (though I guess this one's extreme cause the anime blew chunks), and Kanon were all translated relatively fast even with their anime counterpart down. Though I guess in their favor, they're all multiple choice Visual novels whereas Higurashi's a read-only.

It's canon. The so called "filler" you say is actually Hajisarashi-hen. It was originally included in the PS2 version of Higurashi Matsuri as a light novel.

The 5th OVA, Hirukowashi-hen, which is also a fun episode, is an extra chapter from Higurashi Daybreak.

And of course Saikoroshi-hen is canon, since it's the epilogue of Higurashi.

Actually, Hirukowashi-hen was a chapter included with the Higurashi Rei sound novel release based off of Higurashi Daybreak (the fighting game). There's also Batsukoishi-hen, but they've chosen not to include that for the Rei OVA.

Saikoroshi-hen is also not really an epilogue in any sense of the word. It works more like its own story arc. None the less, the name Saikoroshi-hen (Dice Killing Chapter) makes no sense here since the dice rolling motif that was present in the games was cut out of the anime.

I'm starting to sound like a broken record for repeating this so many times but Higurashi is not only about the murders and people going crazy. It's only that way because the anime made it that way, especially in the first season. The manga and VN actually contains a lot of slice-of-life moments with similar punishment games.

Well, the OVA's kinda different though. I like it, but only because I watch it with the same mindset as I do watching School Rumble.

Anyways, the VN's and mangas often use slice-of-life moments to either foreshadow tragic scenes (like for instance, in Onikakushi, Mion says, "We'll do to you what we did to Tomitake." This was foreshadowed in a slice-of-life scene where they draw on Tomitake's shirt). Or they make the characters more likeable in order to make the horror scenes more memorable. Consider if you will perfect friends like Rena to all-of-a-sudden become your worse enemy. It'd be creepy, sad, and overwhelming. That was what the VNs attempted to do.

It's the Onikakushi-hen route translated and with the Ps2 graphics, but none of the other routes (obviously, since they're not translated) included, and it's just an application so no install, or need to have the full game, is needed.

I wish the anime hadn't taken out so much of the Keiichi x Rena interactions in Onikakushi-hen. They're really cute together, and it would've added a lot more impact to the ending. And Tsumihoroboshi-hen would've have been much more poignant once you found out everything. :oh

While I do like Rena's reactions with Keiichi (especially the Rena PAAUUNCH. Why'd they remove that in the anime anyways? It was like, one of her trademarks in additions to her hatchet, USODA!, and OMOCHIKAERI), Keiichi should have all the girls. If not as girlfriends at least as a family. So Keiichi X Club ftw.

If I were to choose one as Keiichi though, it'd be Mion. Seriously, she's reliable with a capital R! Transferring Teppei's corpse, multiple times throughout the story? Protecting everyone with her life freely? It's arguable who's funner between Rena and Mion, but when it comes to what really counts (aka tits and green hair. Just kidding), Mion's hard to beat. Oh yeah, and she cuts rifle bullets when she's an adult.

But Rena's a great catch herself. Only problem was the whole hostage thing...

I'm starting to sound like a broken record for repeating this so many times but Higurashi is not only about the murders and people going crazy. It's only that way because the anime made it that way, especially in the first season. The manga and VN actually contains a lot of slice-of-life moments with similar punishment games.

Exactly. Plus the slice of life moments make the characters more awesome. I mean Keiichi wouldn't be nearly as awesome as he is without his Kool K1 moments. Nor would Rena be awesome without her Omochikaeri moments.

Heck if it was all about crazy and blood. I really wouldn't like it as much.

Whatever genre it is, the technique employed in the visual novel tends to evoke happier comedy scenes and sad and scarier horror scenes. Conventions be damned!

I can't believe I missed OVA 2. Seriously, I was turned-off by the first OVA with all of its ridiculous, over-the-top hijinks (yet I smirked at parts), but the second one brings us back to basics.

As expected, Saikoroshi-hen is awesome. Rika is in deep-shit now. And I love how Rena scared the crap out of me with that face while watching this at 3 in the morning.

Yes, this is the Higurashi that I so loved. And it's so nice to be back.
