They're just using the word "canceled" instead of "suspended" or "preempted". ANN's article is the exact same except it doesn't use the word "cancel". Tokai TV has Kai scheduled for next week. If it was truly canceled then it wouldn't be there.

an official from the broadcaster said, commenting on the decision to cancel the program. It is still considering whether to broadcast the anime in the future.

How I try to stay hopeful:

Tokai TV didn't show 12 because it was so soon after the incident.

KBS Kyoto didn't show it because it happened in Kyoto.

When School Days 12 was pulled the other stations were quick in dropping it. This is not the case with Higurashi. The remaining 5 still have it on their schedule and haven't said a word about it.

AT-X is the only station that still has School Days 12 on their schedule. They can restrict certain programming audiences to over 15 years old. AT-X is a private satellite channel so it has a better chance of airing anything controversial.

Worst case scenario and all stations stop airing it. Something I rather not think about it but it is always a frightening possibility. Anime aired after midnight is mainly a way to promote upcoming DVDs. If all stations cease airing Kai then that will only give people more incentive to buy the DVDs. High DVD sales = DEEN won't stop producing it. Right now Higurashi is getting a lot of publicity so sales are sure to be higher.

Another possibility is the last half of the season will be pushed back to another season, to ensure everybody is over this whole ordeal. They're not blaming Higurashi for the murder, they're only pointing out similarities. Kyoto said they chose not to air 12 because it has a girl swinging an axe. Obviously the murder is still fresh on everybody's mind; They don't want to offend anyone that was affected by it. Same deal as 9/11, just on a much smaller scale. Since Higurashi is not being directly blamed, I don't think we have to fear any station outright removing it and never allowing it to return.

My gut tells me AT-X will air it. Let's say they do and Tokai decides to air 13, skipping 12 to avoid screwing up the block schedule and possibly skipping a scene they didn't like. We would see 12 then 13 the next day. Not having to suffer a week wait to see 13 (which is gonna be amazing) would make up for all this hell we've been through.

I asked kj1980 (someone who lives in Japan) on AnimeSuki what he thought the chances of it airing soon and if the incident is still on everybody's mind or has it cooled down any.

No gives a shit, but TV stations don't want a potential lawsuit from bitching PTAs and "oh please won't someone think of the children" type of crap so they'll leave it off the air. Luckily, the attention span of the populace are quite short, so it'll probably be like a one week delay or some sort - I'm sure this news will just willow and fade away into memory when REAL news like the vote for the new prime minister comes up.

I hope that's the case.

Quick overview,

He's happy with all the support email but more importantly that Higurashi's message was understood by his fan base. Higurashi is not about the killings. There is a message that's repeated several times throughout the series, sometimes blatantly. That message is: don't hold in all the pain to yourself and think that killing someone is your only answer to the situation. Talk to someone!

In season 1's ending, Keichi tells you this. In Minagoroshi Hen this is again reinforced. At the very least, Ryukishi is happy that the last episode aired proved that Keiichi's decision in Tatarigoroshi Hen was wrong, and there was a better way to approach the situation.

The 12th episode of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai murder mystery anime aired on TV Tama in Japan's Saitama Prefecture, Sun TV in Hyogo Prefecture, and Chiba TV in Chiba Prefecture on early Tuesday morning, despite the episode's earlier preempting on two other stations due to an axe murder case — and despite the news reports of a second axe murder attempt.

Officials in the Nagano Prefecture city of Tatsuno received an emergency phone call at around 2:05 a.m. Monday morning from a woman who said, "My child wounded my husband." They found the 44-year-old husband bleeding from his head at the family's residence. About twenty minutes later, the second oldest son, a 15-year-old third-year junior high student, voluntarily appeared at a nearby police station and reportedly said, "I struck my father with an axe." Police arrested him for attempted murder.

The boy is said to have attacked his sleeping father with an axe with a 15-cm (6-inch) blade at around 2:00 a.m. Monday morning. The father received wounds up to 20 centimeters (8 inches) or longer, and some that were deep enough to reach the bone, but he survived the attack. A 16-year-old girl allegedly killed her sleeping father with an axe in similar circumstances last Tuesday morning.

No direct link has been announced between either case and any anime series, but the reportedly violent last episode of the School Days anime series was preempted on all over-the-air television affiliates. Last week, Tokai TV and Kyoto KBS preempted the same Higurashi Kai episode that the three other stations aired Tuesday morning. The last over-the-air station, tvk broadcaster in Kanagawa Prefecture, still lists Higurashi Kai on its schedule.

The Moon Phase anime information website reports on an apparent recall by Square Enix of ax-shaped bookmarks, which were to be distributed in bookstores to promote one of the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni manga.

When I watched the first arc of the first season (don't know the names of each arc). I had planned to drop Higurashi because I wasn't convinced that it could be an anime that I would like. But I'm glad I didn't drop this show because there's a lot more to it than killer lolis *killer lolis FTW*. The whole story, the mysteries that are resolved step by step, the hints that you could see but didn't catch the first time and so on. This is a true mindgame, and after watching episode 12, everything was here but you had to take a look and think about what happenned before. (well almost everything).
So yeah Higurashi doesn't deserve the reputation of killer lolis and gore.
But killer lolis FTW.:wtf

I'm not sure if Rika should count, either for the fact that she isn't really a child or because she wasn't killing anyone but herself, but anyways, it's not like those two actually killed people. I haven't seen anything else related to Satoko besides that one time but even so, it was just one time. It's certainly not enough to identify this show as just "killer lolis" because that isn't true at all.
