The world would be a far better place if everyone operated like businesses.
They'd recycle. They'd compact their garbage. They'd make pledges to help the environment and donate to charity and they'd act on them. They'd treat everyone with respect and assume the best in them even when everything pointed to the worst, assume the truth even when it looks like a lie.

And yet everything would suck. We'd spend most of our lives on hollow actions designed only to improve our image. We'd work to please people only for our own benefit. Wouldn't the world be a terrible place if we acted like businesses?

Corollary: The more we do to save the world, the more the world sucks.

Burn more oil. Drive more miles. Put the A/C on maximum. Waste electricity. Be the bad guy every once in awhile. Don't give the benefit of the doubt. Question everything people do for you. Don't donate to charity. Don't speak out on behalf of Africa. Don't go to United Way events. Don't recycle. Don't organize. Don't cut your lawn every week and change your mulch every year. Don't have the roof redone because it's faded a bit. Don't drive the speed limit. Don't give a hollow smile and a wave to the neighbor you hate behind his back. Don't build a white picket fence. Don't use solar or geothermal or today's new fad in alternative energy. Don't buy hybrid cars. Don't go to graduate school. Don't get a desk job. Don't wear a suit and tie to work just because your boss wants you to. Don't sign up for the neighborhood watch. Don't put up your flag for Flag Day. Don't reuse disposables. Don't go green. Don't eat organic. Don't buy imitation paintings for the dining room. Don't get married. Don't follow the unwritten rules and don't accept the written ones without questioning everything. Don't wait until the second date. Don't laugh in all the right places. Don't mourn the dead. Don't pay your taxes. Don't listen to politics. Don't vote. Don't make your voice heard.

Unless you want to.

Don't tell your children to stay out of trouble and do everything the way we're all supposed to and go to college and get a high-paying white collar job sitting next to ten other drones just like them. Tell them to explore the world and make their own choices and create their own values and make their own mistakes and face the consequences from society. Teach them to think freely. Don't tell them what they're supposed to like or what they should be doing. Show them true responsibility, not to the rules of a world that is quickly passing by but to themselves and to the people who count on them. Be their friends. Treat them with respect and give them choices and act unto them as equals. Judge them as you would judge any friend, and be happy or disappointed as one. Give them responsibilities to you as a friend and a housemate, and allow them to expect the same of you. If you think their rules are unfair, tell them, and allow them to do the same of you when they believe yours are. Show them your idea of respect and of art and of beauty and of society and of everything around them. Create a generation of free thinkers with a respect for what it means to be free and the responsibilities we have to ensure such freedom. Teach them to respect the rules not because they were made by people more important than them but because they are a tool to make the world a better and safer and happier place, and themselves as a part of that. And if they disagree with the rules teach them how to challenge them as a good citizen would and not as an immature rebel.

Don't try so hard to make the world a better place. The world will be a better place for it.
