I know plenty anime lovers do cosplay but for me its just kinda strange, ya know like Anime Holloween. How do you feel about it?
Holloween( for those who may not know what it is) - holiday where kids dress up and get candy for knocking on peoples doors.

Only thing I did for halloween was wear a trashbag and sit on my friend's shoulders while we ran around getting candy. In Trashbags. Clean ones, of course, but that is by far the most unique halloween costume I've ever had. I simply don't have the patience to do a cosplay :P

I'd cosplay only if I looked convincing.
Just like wearing normal clothes, if you dont look good, dont wear those clothes.

I think white people should stop cosplaying altogether. Even the best of the best look unconvincing. I think it's their hair. *nods*
EDIT: 7/30/05....wow I was really rude a year ago.

Me too. I have NIL experience with sewing, but I'm sort of stuck between whether to cosplay as Itachi or Touga (from Utena). It depends on how long my hair will be by July.
I'm thinking Touga, because Itachi contacts are too damn expensive. Plus a Mangekyou version will probably not be available until it gets in the anime.

my friends became Itachi, Sasuke, and Neji this halloween, home-made costumes of course.. they sew it on their own...^^ and I think they look great!

I was gonna go as an aniem charater, but I did something trash related on halloween too! I was high or something, but i dressed as a clown,Im really freaked of clowns too and most people are so I hid in a recycling bin that I rolled on the side of the driveway.I was in those really big recycle bins that hold a lot of stuff. And waited for kids to walk by and spring out of my recycling bin and scream. My recyling bin almost fell cuz this girl got scared and pushed it,but i manage to balance it.My brother was video taping some of it,i showed it to my friends at school and we were laughing our asses off.I
am still very freaked when I see clowns though, but that was just too fun :D
edit: yeah tsu asians do a much better job we have a more natural look

That is kind of bias. In Japan there are bad cosplays and in America too.
Have you ever seen Heki's Yuna outfits?
Have you seen Adella's Aerith's outfits?
Those are just two awesome North America cosplayers that are execellent with their cosplaying.
Either way, everyone puts alot of time and effort into their costumes and that is the important part.
I mean, I put alot of effort and time into my cosplays and it hurts when you are basically saying indirectly that my cosplays are bad.
Edit:
Uh...not everyone knows how to sew in Japan?!
So, WTF? They are not pros.

First of all i wasn't trying to insult because
i've never seen you before (i think)
so don't come and give me your attitude ok!
now i've been judging by some pics, i've seen

I wasn't trying to give you attitude, I was just saying that you shouldn't judge people's cosplays by what country they are from. I mean, I have seen some stinky Japanese cosplays done along with some stink American cosplays.
All in all, I just say it is the effort.
Edit: I can't actually imagine Lee, my sister has his haircut almost like his I just need to straight it and the eyebrows are easy to make.
Wigs= GREAT cosplay accessories
sorry but...
i'm not that easily amused
so i'm too picky
and i also think about the effort
Edit:
i forgot to mention this:
like you read before i judge the
pictures they put in anime magazines
(New Type Usa to be specific) and i
guess they put the best or somethin
and i havn't seen that good ones in the
web
those are pretty good
but can't you buy the zori's?
NinjaTenten
12-31-2004, 03:58 AM
I don't like to buy stuff when I cosplay =/ Takes the fun out of it...I prefer to find ways to make the stuff. And thank you.
But wouldn't you struggle less?

That is true. But I like how I have gone through a trail and error to make the sandals so far. Besides, I would like to begin selling costumes that I make to people and I don't want a person to go out and have to waste even more money on buying something that I can include in my fee for cheap.

Halloween has always been my favorite day (well..it was before I started Uni). I wanted to go as princess peach when I worked at EB. I haven't put effort into halloween for years. I always just throw on a labcoat or some scrubs and say I am a mad scientist or doctor.
I would like to do nice anime costumes, but I don't have a good anime face. I would maybe consider it for a halloween party, but never a con or a website.
I'm not very good at sewing either. I can sew fine by hand...but sewing machines really hate me. The bobbin ~always~ jams the machine. I tried knitting after sewing didn't work for me...I can cast on if I have a website with pictures to show me exactly what my hands should be doing.
I admire people who have good sewing skills. I would love to make my own clothes.
Even bad costumes are fine, because at least the people put some sort of effort into being something more than just a regular person. I've never been to any sort of con, but I think it would be far more exciting if there were a lot of people in costumes, even if they were not well made. And even if the person is ~not~ asian!
Being asian doesn't make you japanese, but being japanese does make you asian.

I second that. It really depends a lot on the caracter. When white people try to look like Asian, it doesn't work, and when Asian try to look like white people... it doesn't work either. Someone like Aeris (FFVII) just CAN'T be cosplayed perfectly if you're Asian... at least now that we've all seen Adella's absolutely amazing cosplay.
So yes, I don't think it's about whether you're Asian, white or black, it's about choosing a character that resembles you.

Cosplay is great, I went as Itachi to a convention in October. Future cosplays for myself include Mido Ban from Get Backers, Sanji from One Piece and Cid from FF7. Though the Cid costume will have the Cids from every other FF game we can gather, we have 3 right now, but more people are trying to figure out which ones they want to do.

I agree. As an example, An american cosplaying naruto or tsunade would be good. I think. But sasuke and Itachi, leave them to the asians, IMO.

Yeah, in Naruto there's definitely characters who look best when they're cosplayed by Asian people (such as Itachi, Sasuke, Kiba and Kakashi in my opinion), but also those that fit white people better (Temari, Tsunade, Kurenai, Ino)

Yeah, I have seen some completely convincing, sexy, awesome cosplay in my time, and it has nothing to do with what race you are.
The best (and hottest *fans self*) Zabuza I have ever seen was this brown guy. Man, that was awesome.
I have seen some crap cosplay from white folks, and some crap cosplay from Asian people. Likewise I have seen some awesome cosplay from white people, and some awesome cosplay from Asian people.
Come Anime North '05, I shall be Orochimaru. And I'm white. I have yet to encounter someone who has the least bit of a problem with myself being white and wanting to cosplay. I don't see why it should be, either.
.But sasuke and Itachi, leave them to the asians, IMO.
One of the better Itachi's I have seen has been a white girl. She was gorgeous, and pulled it off perfectly.
In fact, me and my friend spent most of the night admiring her from a far (we were at an anime-themed dance).

When I do cosplay, I cosplay well. I think that's mainly because I have a round face. As far as that whole race argument, though it's pretty much dead, the main reason the Japanese generally tend to have better costumes than Americans is because they're way into it whereas most of us yankees are lazy. =P
And while we're on the subject...

Interesting remark... But exactly how many blonde-haired blue-eyed Asians are out there? And yes, there is such a thing as hair dye, but black eyebrows with bleached hair looks kinda cheesy. And I don't say this to be offensive or racist in any way, but most anime characters are drawn with features that don't look partidularly asian, i.e. humungously big eyes.
I think most creators of games and anime don't pay particular attention to what race their characters are because it simply isn't important. Perhaps we should all do the same.

I think cosplay is kinda fun..... I'll be tryin it for myself in may.
I agree, though, that people need to try to find characters to cosplay as, that they can actually PULL OFF THE LOOK FOR.
You've gotta have some starting resemblance to the character (face/body and stuff, not what they wear), to truly pull off their look.
I, myself, will be going as Bridget here, when I go to that convention.
Going with what I said, yes I *can* pull off this look, despite being a guy.... Indeed, I had 5 people that I know spontaneously suggest I go as him, as soon as I mentioned the idea of cosplay.... I guess I look sorta girly.... Oh well.
Yeah, Im freaking wierd, so sue me :)
OMG you have to take pictures.
And don't be one of those guys who dresses up like a girl and looks hairy and stuff.
You have to shave your legs and wear makeup.
:)

Here's a long definition... (http://www.free-definition.com/Cosplay.html)
and here's the short:
Cosplay (コスプレ ) is a Japanese subculture centered on dressing as characters from manga, anime and video games, and, less commonly, live action television shows, movies or Japanese pop music bands.
The term cosplay (pronounced kosupure in Japanese) is a contraction combining the words "costume" and "play" which accurately describes the hobby of having fun by dressing up as one's favorite characters.

i think girls look better for anime cosplay rather than guys (for most characters) mostly due to the fact that anime guys have many female traits...
cept some r more suited for guys... like no girl could ever cosplay Nappa or Brolly from dragonball

Cosplay is well intersting...some ppl just try to look like the person but don't that's when u got problems and then u start to think that they r weird.
That's sorta like what I often say about this....
As I said above, you have to have some resemblance to the character BEFOREHAND, or you cant possibly pull off that look right. If you do, THEN you can get the outfit and do it properly. Example, large guys should only go as characters who are already big and bulky..... it would be very odd, for example, to see a flabby guy doing Rock Lee. Though, it would be rather hilarious.
Im doin a cosplay as Bridget here (who I can pull off easily), but at one point I had also considered Seshoumaru from Inuyasha.... but everyone told me I'd make a crappy Seshoumaru.... and they are probably right. I dont know WHY I'd make a crappy Seshoumaru, but the fact that everyone instantly said that means it's true...
Pulling these things off is all about finding the right character that suits how you already look.

Everything has a reason, my friend. I know it's pretty weird to make the Akatsuki coat out of satin, but satin looks amazing on stage when a particular cosplayers performs. On the other hand, cotton looks good in photographs, while some satin gives the filmsy/low-quality kind of look. You are making it sound as if you just have to cut out a piece of cloth and wear it. Making a costume from scratch is far from easy. There are things to do to the costume itself, such as stuffing, piping, lining and wrapping. So, unless you have the ability to produce a better costume, most cosplayers and non-cosplayers alike here will really appreciate it if you keep cynical remarks to yourself. It isn't fun to see something you've made for months being shot down in a matter of a few sentences. :wink

Being not so attractive myself and quite new to the cosplay scene, I have not encountered such problems yet. But there are photographers who would tell you to do suggestive poses. Like if you are wearing a short skirt, they will be like, "Squat down! High kick! Bend over!". That kind of stuff.
Seasoned cosplayers have been telling those stories for a long time. At big conventions, there are even perverts who would follow you around and try to snap pictures of you under your skirt. If he succeeded, pictures of it will be plastered on certain fetish sites, mostly attached with tag boards. Cyber perverts will then start making a lot of lewd comments, even discussing about her certain physical attributes. There was this unfortuante evangelion cosplayer who was told that "If he ever sees her, he would love to **** her so hard, and please call ******** if you are interested." This is simply disgusting.
Personally, I have only met a few people who was disrespectful towards me, as in they would put their arms around me without my consent/ask me to bend forward etc. But thankfully, they've kept those pictures to themselves. I credit this to the guns-tonfa/katana/huge-assed swords that puts tessaiga to shame I cosplay with. Certain cosplayers' attitudes adds to the mounting amount of fetishism, too. There was this story of a Sakura who offered to "lick anyone anywhere" if she were to be allowed to cut the queue in a masquerade. This is just wrong, in my opinion. Of course, there are much worse behaviours out there, some whom I do not wish to recall nor tell. (There was this whole butt-rubbing/suggestive poses incident).
Thankfully, the singaporean cosplaying circuit is tightly-knit. It's as if everyone knows each other, so no freaks can get past unnoticed. But freaks aside, this happened at an event I was attending, though at different dates. A poor lone girl was surrounded by a bunch of hooligans and was verbally harrassed. Who said cosplaying isn't dangerous?

Lol. It happens mostly in America, those stories, I mean. And vatatzes, yes. I am the one in the middle. :P Thankyou. Well, if you are that afraid, try to drag your male friend along, as your bodyguard, or something. Better yet, make him cosplay as Sephiroth or Orochimaru. This would deter most fanboys. If you can't do so, make yourself a wooden katana or staff to whack them on the head. Good luck with your cosplay, Bridget. Oh, and yes. We girls have another lethal weapon-they are called platform boots. It would make a two-ton hefter cry if put to the correct usage.

Cosplay is totaly sweet. I mean If it wasn't for people casplaying at sakura-con as ronan warriors I would have never even remembered that I had seen that anime. Now I remember wasting at least hours of my life watching roanan warriors. It almost makes one wonder how much memory I've wasted remembering that I wasted all that time watching ronan warriors.
I tried cosplaying last year as Red XIII in Shinra Soldier guise. My costume was ultimate (is cussing alowed in this forum). Anyhow this year I'm making a Rufus Shinra costume this year that will not suck. Or hopefully at least suck less. If I screw this costume up I think I'm going to stop cosplaying FF7 characters all together and switch to something easier like, lupin the third.

the only good this was the sword!
well back to the story... ppl were surounding her cause her sqirt was really to small..
there were cameras every were and she was telling them to stop. then one gye tried to grab her so i smaled him with my sword! it felt pretty good! anyways i thought i was pretty cool so i said "back off" with that cool sounding voice and i got to shank him with my dager!

The latter! I only like her second outfit...anyway I'm going to change some little things here and there and it will be quite unique, but not so different from the original one as some JP Temari cosplayers I saw.
I would like my little brother (18 years old and...well short :P ) to cosplay Gaara (his second outfit) and my boyfriend to cosplay Kankurou (he would be perfect) or at least Shikamaru (as chuunin), but I'm not sure they will...men are lazy! :notrust

First of all, I read you are 18 years old, so I suggest you to wait and se how the 15-16 Sasuke looks, because the 12th one could be too young for you.
Or you could make a more original cosplay, for example an ANBU Sasuke.

i cosplayed as kakashi to a-kon and i'm black. The only reason i did it was because my friends forced me to. I personally think all cosplays are bad, except for Heath who went as garra. She is the only one i would give major props to. They said i was a good kakashi but they also said it was because i act like him. So what I'm trying to say is I guess cosplaying comes down to either looking exactly like them ( by means of costume) or having the same build and acting like them( with out actually acting, just being you).

Well, it's a problem with many character from Naruto manga (Hinata, Haku, Gaara, Uchihas and Kakshi if you want to show the Sharingan...) but you could simply skip them when cosplaying...it's for fun, isn't it? :wink
P.S. About cosplay photos, can I post them even if they are about other people than myself? Because if that's the case I've something to show you! :smile-big

I'm even going to be dying my hair blonde for the role @_@ Good thing I might also be cosplaying as Ichigo from Bleach so that blached hair would work for two roles and I'll be using a wig for my costume for the masq... ^_^

Buddy A lost, but stupid buddy B didn't know how to record a video. SO the only video i got buddy A doing is Love Shine single on heavy in a dress.

Working on a Tsunade and Temari cosplay.
I'm not a Asian and I don't have the same light blonde hair as Tsunade (altough I'm going to dye it blonde again) but that doesn't really matter for me. I don't like blonde wigs, because 90% of them don't look pretty (especially if you have to make two ponytails at the back).
I think it's all about the costume and the additude. My Tsunade jack is done (with the Kanji, I have a picture for the people who are interested), I have a white top (because I don't like grey in combination with green and blue), the green chain, a Tonton plushie ( <3 ) and some other stuff. I'm also a part of a Naruto act on stage, with a big Naruto group, and I'm really looking forward to ^^[Convention in The Netherlands]
Oh, and cosplay is for fun. Nothing else. Don't take it too seriously, because nobody can look EXACTLY like an Anime character. The sizes are unrealistic (I mean, ever seen a girl with the breasts like Tsunade but with a really small waist? And no, not fake breasts XD) and all of the Anime girls are pretty. For the cosplayers: Have fun! For the none-cosplayers: Have fun with watching XD (And don't be a jerk to other cosplayers. I know a lot of people who thinks it's fun to call other cosplayers names and acting VERY rude :notrust )

You have to admitt thought that there are a few who do sort of look like the original anime character. But then again, its only a few.

Wow.
That is quite a disaster of a stain.
Otherwise, it's really not a bad costume at all...someone certainly is enthusiastic.
I like cosplay for the escapism of it all...it's probably a lot of fun to run around in costume once you've outgrown Halloween. Man-Faye doesn't scare me. He really doesn't. I think he's outright hilarious. He knows that he's making eyes bleed...that's the point...probably has a lot of fun doing it. *envious that he has the guts*
I have a few friends and aquaintences that have dressed up. My boyfriend has cosplayed as Kaworu Nagisa several times and I know someone who dressed as Rock Lee. Neither were 100% accurate of course. But they both looked like they were having a lot of fun just wearing something out of the ordinary.
I'm not brave enough to do that.

Here's to resurrecting a thread on the 4th page....
Personally, I think cosplaying is really dorky....which is probably why I LOVE it so damn much! It's always kind of fun to see how much people can match themselves up to a fictional drawing. And the bad can sometimes be even more entertaining to look at than the good.
As for me...I'm cosplaying for the first time this May, and I'm dressing as Tayuya.
Another thing...I think dressing up in costumes and stuff is fun, but when people start doing skits and staying in character and stuff...then it gets a bit weird, you know? Like, my friend thought it was kind of required to stay in character, so while there was this one guy who would NOT leave her alone, she wouldn't tell him to go away, since it would be out of character. I think that's a bit ridiculous...especially seeing as Tayuya and I have nothing in common. Hell no, I don't want to ACT like her.

why so little kurenai cosplays? ;__;
I don't know...it's probably because of the hair and the eyes, or the fact that her dress thing is kinda complicated to make. It's a lot easier to cut up an ugly t-shirt and go as Tayuya than to carefully sew a complicated costume like Kurenai's.

Since now I've never had great problems with my costumes..maybe a little bit with the hair styles, but i resolved it wearing wig or coloring my hair ^^
The thing I appreciate best in a cosplay is make weird photos with the others, you know to depict characters in comical poses like the Gai we have the photos,or imitating fanarts
thisi is one of my photos as tayuya :

Yes! Another Tayuya cosplayer!
For her costume, I'm going to temporarily dye my hair red...it's already a reddish brown, but I think it needs to be a lot redder. I'm almost finished with my costume too, I just need to finish the Orochi bow and the hat, and I'll be finished. The bow is giving me hell, since I want it to be accurate, though. x_x I resolved to use wire hangers to make the bow part and those things that stick up, but I just don't want to do the SEWING part. I'm so lazy...
