View Full Version : How do record video games?

Alright, may seem a bit odd, but I'd like to record some of my RPGs and make like a film out of it. I know, I have a lot of time and have no life, but it's something I've always wanted to experiment with. :amuse Specifically, I want to record PS2 games, and then somehow upload them on to my computer and edit them around to be better. I think I can do that, as I've seen some people post their games they recorded from their PS2's an Xbox's and then edit them on their pc's, then sharing them. Is there a way I can do all this, and is it very complicated or not?
Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance,
-Seto
you can either 1.) record it through the VCR and then import the comp or 2.) record it through digital camera, and then import it to the comp. it's up to you, just make sure you have the right equiptments though. and then edit with I Movie or Window Movie Maker or somethign else. *shrugs* sorry I can't help you much.

I can't vouch for how most "next-gen" systems will record, or if they'll even record properly, on a VCR, so you'll have to get back to us with that experiment.
On the other hand, I did accidentally record some Zelda stuff from my SNES years ago-- didn't even know the VCR was on-- and it recorded just fine. A few years ago, I thought of recording my friend playing Resident Evil 2 (N64), and editing together a pseudo-"movie" of it, jsut for the hell of it, but never got around to it.
through roms and emulators its possible... but not sure how it is through tv. Makes me wonder how they do those video trailers and previews you see on game sites

Perhaps the same way you can record DVD to VHS-- with an illegal, and I might add, hard-to-obtain, device called a "signal rectifier"-- though there may by other ways.
I like the emulator idea. We record lots of stuff from my roomie's comp onto video so we can watch it whenever we want without tying up the computer.

There are video cards which have a/v, s-cable, coax cable, or similar input abilities. So that's likely how they do it.

I've always wondered about this. I know you can record movies easily in some emulators, but I never knew you could record things on a VCR like that.
I think, I'll have to try it some time... then again I don't have a working VCR anymore.. -_-

Okay, I have been wondering this too. I hook my PS2 up to my VCR/TV combo. Record myself playing the game, but I don't know how to get that VHS tape uploaded onto my CPU, or what equipment I will need.

My guess is a digital camera would work best
just set it up towards the tv
and then plug it into the computer and make your montage
those other ways might work better
i don't really know

The only downside of that is that any videocam I've heard of will record the "scan lines" on the TV screen, and I personally don't know any way around that one.
Though if you want a really trippy experience, try turning the camera to "monitor" mode while it's hooked up to the TV, and point it at the screen
Fun for hours...
