This is sort of a difficult question to answer...ALL of those listed have had horrible pasts, but I think Gaara's was the worst, to be honest. His father took his humanity away from him when he was still in the womb, and then used him as a tool...not only that, but his mother and uncle both despised him, and everyone feared him...he did not know love, ever. That in itself is terrible...

They dont show it to much now and didnt even show how bad it was at the beginning of the series, but naruto has got no one, like gaara, he was HATED and FEared, ppl wanted him to leave, like gaara, they had a very similar childhood, except, gaaras was a fair bit worse. Thats why in the show naruto says, wow me and gaara are a lot alike and sees him in a different light.
Sasuke i must admit has it tough, he came home and his bro killed everyone. But he had ppl loving him,everyone in the village admires him cuz hes part of the "uchiha" ooooo! so he always had a shoulder to cry on. Everyone is with him, they all feel sorry for him, and all wanna kill itachi with him if they could, he has lots of support. Gaara and naruto up till recently, didnt have any of this.

Getting attention or loved for the wrong reasons are the same as being lonely. And because of this Sasuke had it worse out of everyone. Not only did he lose people he knew and loved but they were killed by a person he loved. At that point Sasuke was as lonely as everyone else but also had the pressure to live up to the name as an Uchiha.

Sasuke's childhood is twisted on so many levels you can't even compare it to the others.

i voted gaara because his childhood trauma involved his fathers sacrifice to seal him with sand imbuned with his mothers spirit, whom gaara had to kill (unconciously, he was an infant after all) and then as a small boy having no feelings at all due to the sands protection, then killing the woman he had grown to care for as his stand in mother.

i voted gaara because he seems to be the one whos life has been most affected by his childhood. naruto found his own ways to be accepted and happy, sasuke just ignored his negative feelings untill he met itachi again, and neji knew that his fathers death was part of his destiny as a member of the branch family. haku's emotional wounds were mostly healed by becoming zabuza's (sp?) subordinate and feeling important again.

Haku had some pretty strong ties to Zabuza. Even though he knew that he was just a tool, it still made him happy to serve Zabuza. Not to say that makes it an easy childhood, but at least it's something.

Naruto never had parents and was hated by everyone, and he never knew why. I'd say that's pretty tough, not being able to understand why you're so disliked and alone.

Sasuke had some relationship with his clan. It wasn't until after his Itachi killed his family that he would have had a hard time, and even that I think the difficulty would have been masked by his rage.

Gaara, much like Naruto was a total outcast. His childhood was far from normal. Wasn't he basically a science expiriment?

Sorry, no, Naruto's face was worse than all the others except Gaara. Naruto was hated and feared throughout Konoha same as Gaara. The two have basically the same life, with the exception of Gaara actually having even his family, his father and uncle hate him, and then told his mother hated him too, just as the uncle that told him before he loved him really hated him and that's after he tried to kill Gaara, ordered by Gaara's father.

Other then that, Naruto and Gaara's lives before going into ninja teams are basically exactly the same.

Sasuke in comparison has had it easy. He's had a loving family, and he's had people respect and help him and root for him ever since their death. His trauma is just one big event. Naruto and Gaara's trauma was an everlasting ongoing one: a blunt, rusty knife, cutting into them, pushing gently bit by bit ever deeper and deeper, every moment of every day that just did not end.

Naruto was alone and was disliked. All he wanted was for his existence to be acknowledged, so he decided that his dream would be to become Hokage.

Sasuke lived a normal life, some troubles, but nothing too bad. This is the anime forum so I can't get too into it, but at the time things were going well for him. Then his brother took that all away in the form of killing off all of his relatives. Also, his brother made sure to leave the image of revenge in his head. From then on he was alone, just like Naruto.

Which one is going to be more fucked up in the long run? The one who began to cry tears of happiness after being acknowledged by Iruka? Naruto's path is one with a shit load of room for happiness.

Naruto's learning what it's like to have friends and such. In the same context that people use the expression that hunger is the best spice in, the pain he felt beforehand is the foundation of the happiness he can feel now. Because he had nothing from the beginning, he didn't lose anything.

Sasuke's life, in my opinion, is far more tragic than Naruto's. Sasuke's inner demons eat away at him constantly. Sasuke's past has a strong grip on him, Naruto was easily released from his.

While Naruto did feel a great deal of pain, didn't Sasuke, too? I don't see how someone can measure pain.

Neji. Naruto has a seal too. But he doesn't make such a great problem with this seal. His father died because it was war and it was his job to protect his family. In other words Neji hated his family only because they are alive! He is a real egoist!!!! He was offended with his destiny. (I don't know any person who was satisfied with his destiny:))).
But Haku.... His life was really terrible:((( He hide from his past all his life. He loved his mother and father, but.... May be that's why he want to share his love with everybody!!!! His great as Naruto, but his childhood was very hard because he was the only one person from all this characters, who had to make adult decision when he was a child. And this situation didn't change him into a monster!!!

People think witnessing the execution of his clan is bad. Indeed it is, but in Sasuke's case, his constant self-delusion that it was, in ANY partiality, his fault, is irrational. He blames his weakness as the cause for the event, but he has devised a method to overcome the trauma: by exacting vengeance upon his brother.

Gaara, on the other hand, had had such a traumatic life that the only method he could come up with to solve his problem is...to...would killing everyone who is a threat to his existence reduce the pain of his past? NO!

Sasuke's loved ones died at the hands of his brother. Gaara's "loved ones", if ever any could be rated so highly, died of causes directly related to him.

Indeed, "past" must also encompass "near-present", and, as of yet, Gaara has not found trust, love, or even friendship with anyone. The mother who protects him does so not for his own sake, but for her own revenge.
Sasuke has made friends, is loved, has the admiration of strangers, and is dearly wanted by Orochimaru.

I think that Haku, Naruto and Neji barely deserves a place in this poll, when compared with Gaara, or even Sasuke. All components of their traumatic past are met and surpassed by either of the psychologically scarred Gaara or vengeful Sasuke.

i would say my vote goes to either gaara obviouly. he was never once loved and was lied to all his life. killed the only person he though loved him, yoshimaru, killed his mom when he was born. had his own father try and kill him. can't even sleep or more than like 1 hour or shukaku will eat his ass. nobody liked him. kids ran from him and even when he tried to make up for his mistaked they still shuned him.

then my other choice would have to be kakashi. after the gaiden he had a f up life too. his father was killed and even hated by some he kinda relived his fathers death minus him dying and he saw his friend killed right in front of him and basically died in his arms, plus he blames himself for his friends death. and we still haven't seen all of the gaiden yet so what else could happen.

2)Naruto-->Everyong hates him but at least no one tries to murder him. Don't really have to worry if anyone will stab you at the back when you are sleeping. However Naruto is lonely, so no happy memories.

3)Haku--> Parentless and have to wonder in the streets. Not really hated by most people I suppose, unless he go around telling others he is a Bloodlimited person. Also lonely, so no happy memories.

Well it's really hard to choose... But I think Naruto and Gaara had the same childhood... Even though you can never say that Mizuki was to Naruto as Yashamaru was to Gaara, they served the same purpose. They were people close/important to them that threw reality into Naruto and Gaara's faces (Nartuo demon/Gaara never loved).

Haku and Sasuke lost people important to them, but I would have to say it was worse for Sasuke. The one person that he probably loved and admired more than anything else destroyed all he knew and claimed it was so he could test himself. Then, instead of putting Sasuke out of his misery, he lets him live, saying he is too weak to kill. At least Haku's father showed remorse... >.> he did it out of fear... Itachi did it out of... self interest I guess is what you call it.

Neji... he had it bad too, but not as bad in comparison.

bah, narutos had one of the easiest lives.
i mean look at his flashbacks and u see he has memories of sneaking outta class with kiba, eating food with chouji, and sleeping with shikamaru

back when narutotalks.com was still online, i made a pt system to show who had it the worst. lets see if i can remember it

1 pt: loneliness (includes: lee, naruto, neji, sasuke, haku, gaara)

1 pt: having sum1 close to you being killed (neji, sasuke, haku, gaara)

1 pt: having sum1 close to you try and kill you (sasuke, haku, gaara)

therefore:
naruto and lee get 1 point
neji gets 2 points
and sasuke haku and gaara get 3 points
you can even consider giving sasuke only 2.5 pts cause itachi only mentally raped sasuke/ mentally killed him/ only threatened to kill him

so in the end, haku and gaara had it the worst, with sasuke in a close 2nd, meanwhile naruto and lee are last of the 6

the most interesting thing about the top three is comparing how they turned out
haku: turned into an emotionless tool with no feelings of pain or fear
gaara: turned into a blood-thirsty killer
sasuke: turned into a cold quiet serious person (who although constantly 24/7 thinks about murdering itachi, is still mentally sane)

I think it's Gaara because he got seperated and rejected most. Naruto was never part of the community but he didn't really know why and as soon as he finds out, he starts to recognize that there are people who like and acknowledge him (Iruka and from then on all the other nice chars we're meeting during the series).
Sasuke? Of course it is very hard to see your parents being murdered by your brother but he himself had never been that rejected. It's true that he had a bad sense of inferiority compared to his brother and that he had been followed by those incidents, but he is the only one who had the chance to escape the bad situation. After the murders nothing bad had happend to him and "only" his thoughts had been torturing him. Basically, it's voluntary isolation- he could have been the most popular and skilled guy at the academy, unlike the two others who had no chance of being accepted.
Gaara was never free to choose another life as everyone feared him and he was not able to control his abillities. I think it's hard to find out that everyone thinks of you as a monster (Naruto) but even harder to do it yourself. Furthermore he lost all hope because his aunt seemd to rescue him with her love but than turned out as the biggest dissapointment. In fact, he is the one who was told plainlest that he had no right to live and that noone will ever accept or love him (he's even rather a failed experiment than a human being).
So I think it's this boy who got crazy by trying to find a reason to live on. Sasuke and Naruto have stayed quite sane compared to him.

Neji: I think his believe in fate had avoided him a bit from dealing with his situation too much, and in his surrounding, the kind of discrimination he expierienced had been normal. Concerning his disadvantage as a branch family member, you could compare him to a member of any minority, eg coloured people. Loosing his father doesn't qualify him for the pole position because Sasuke had expired a greater loss.
Haku: nearly no comment because I didn't remember him well enough. Nevertheless he had been happy from the day he met this guy on. He had been given a new purpose quite early and although he had been abused and made a tool, he enjoyed it and had a person to love.

yeah, i'll have to agree there. all of the other characters had one thing going on with them. Gaara, on the other-hand:
mother died during child birth,
mother didn't want to have gaara(due to the demon),
has a badger demon inside him,
badger demon was put inside him by his DAD,
can never sleep because of the demon,
is hated/feared by his entire village because of the demon,
only loved one person because everyone else hated/feared him,
the person he loved (uncle) tried to kill him because Gaara killed his mom (WTF! SHE DIED IN CHILD-BIRTH!),
dad tried to kill him because dad's plan went too well.

Anyway you look at it, though the other characters' problems piled up as well, none did so as much as Gaara's.

The worst: Gaara's - hated and feared by everyone, killed own loved ones. Everyone is a possible enemy to kill him. He basically had no one to console in for comfort. Loneliness is not a choice and insanity is just a matter of time.

Second worst: Haku - unwanted and hated by everyone, kill own loved ones. At least he found comfort in Zabuza and lived for him. Haku has a strong will. He had a choice of dwelling in his tragic past but he chose to be happy with Zabuza although he was just being used. He was happy to die for him and it wasn't in vain.

Third worst: Sasuke - His brother murdered the whole clan and then family before his eyes. He lived with the guilt of not being able to help them. All was lost in one day. But he had others to turn for comfort. It's just that he chose not to. Loneliness is a choice here. He chose to dwell and bath in his tragic past.

Fourth worst: Naruto - He was lonely and hated but up until he was in school he had friends. None of his friends seemed to have knowledge of the nine tails in him. Plus he had Iruka. It's not that he's a strong child. He had doubts but Iruka was kind to him genuinely so he was able to overcome his loneliness.

Five worst: Neji - I don't think he had it so bad compare to the others.

if u go read my earlier posts, or read the damn manga/ anime, ull notice that growing up naruto got to hang with kiba, shika, chouji every now and then. he odviously wasnt as lonely as most naruto fans take him for. he just didnt have a family; was why he was so xtra depressed.

edit: based on anime filler, i think zaku had it even worse than naruto. growin up homeless. he actually was hated by villagers. he had to steal food to survive and would get beat down. and then he was corrupted by orochimaru and ended up dying

I honestly believe Gaara and Naruto do not have it as bad as Sasuke or Haku, simply because it is my opinion that it hurts a lot more to have something you treasure taken away then to have nothing to start with. In Naruto and Gaara's case, they had nowhere to go but up. Sasuke and Haku grew accustomed to a way of life and had that taken away. That is not a fall anyone should have to experience.

Didn't have much to begin with but everything he treasures is taken away in an instant right before his eyes. This is where I think Haku had it worse than Sasuke. Sasuke might have been shown his family's murder through Tsukiyoumi, but he knows very well he wasn't there when the deed was done. Everyone was dead when he got there. Haku on the other hand has no such small comfort.

Haku leaves them in the dust by being forced to take his father's life to save his own. Not only is everything taken away, but he no longer has the comfort of blaming his suffering on someone else.

Naruto - able to blame the kyuubi

Haku might have been forced to do what he did by circumstance, but do you think a kid that age can understand that. He killed his father, who up until that point had probably loved him with all his heart (and judging by his tears, loved him at the end).

It's pretty much an impossible question because it depends on not only how horrible the past was, but how well they handled it.

It's pretty unbelievable that Gaara and Naruto would've turned out as well as they did, given their pasts.

Gaara grew up being feared by the village and had virtually nobody - his uncle and possibly his siblings. The only person that he "knew" loved him turned out to hate him and tried to kill him. Then as he was dying, Yashamaru told Gaara that his mother never loved him. Gaara's fractured recollection of that day apparently has him thinking that the spirit of his mom is in the sand, except that it's actually Shukaku which is trying to drive him insane. And whenever he sleeps, Shukaku eats away at his sanity even more. It's amazing that the guy was as sane as he was during the chuunin exam, much less that he found his marbles again.

On the plus side, he has memories of being loved and he had somebody to explain some of the stuff about growing up to him.

Naruto didn't even get that, although he was spared the demon in his head. He was feared by the adults of the village and shunned by the kids. I have read the manga and watched the anime and don't recall any flashbacks of him having fun as a kid. I'm not saying that they don't exist, but the manga took pains at several points to point out that he had no friends while he was growing up, thanks to the kids picking up the attitudes of their parents. Kiba, Chouji, and Shikamaru certainly didn't think much of him prior to the chuunin exams. Kiba's flashbacks were of him laughing at Naruto. Iruka had sympathy for him, but never really showed it to Naruto until the confrontation with Mizuki. Until then, he never had any idea why anyone hated him. I just can't imagine how difficult it would be as a child to never have somebody to comfort you or anything. He says that his goal is to be Hokage, but I think the real goal is the second half of that statement "and have everyone recognize me".

Naruto's pretty amazing also in that he's as optimistic as he is. And he never complains about that past or feels sorry for himself. He even seems to think that he's blessed.

Naruto would probably say that Sasuke had the tougher past. He didn't really contest Sasuke's charge other than to say that he had those things now and didn't want to lose them. I'm not entirely sure that I agree. The question of "better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all" is a tough one. But he had support after his tragedy if he wanted it. He had sympathy from the adults and he was the most popular kid in class. I don't see being popular just because you're rich, handsome, cool, smart, and the best athlete as necessarily being a drag. Maybe he didn't want all the attention, but at least he had some. Naruto had to make trouble in order to get any sort of attention.

Here's where it gets really tricky - the way that they handled it. Sasuke basically just brooded about it and felt sorry for himself. Naruto came up with a (fairly unrealistic) plan to fix his problem. Killing Itachi isn't a solution. It punishes the guilty, but doesn't heal his wounds. Still, it's not unrealistic that he lost to his rage.

I'd be tempted to put Haku as a close second to Gaara. Being responsible for his parents death (at least in his own eyes) is pretty horrific and then he got stuck living on the streets. But he was able to find something to live for, no matter how small, so he was happy again (at least of sorts).

Neji's another self-tortured sort, along the lines of Sasuke, but less tragic. He'd be fifth.

It's pretty much an impossible question because it depends on not only how horrible the past was, but how well they handled it.

It's pretty unbelievable that Gaara and Naruto would've turned out as well as they did, given their pasts.

Gaara grew up being feared by the village and had virtually nobody - his uncle and possibly his siblings. The only person that he "knew" loved him turned out to hate him and tried to kill him. Then as he was dying, Yashamaru told Gaara that his mother never loved him. Gaara's fractured recollection of that day apparently has him thinking that the spirit of his mom is in the sand, except that it's actually Shukaku which is trying to drive him insane. And whenever he sleeps, Shukaku eats away at his sanity even more. It's amazing that the guy was as sane as he was during the chuunin exam, much less that he found his marbles again.

On the plus side, he has memories of being loved and he had somebody to explain some of the stuff about growing up to him.

Naruto didn't even get that, although he was spared the demon in his head. He was feared by the adults of the village and shunned by the kids. I have read the manga and watched the anime and don't recall any flashbacks of him having fun as a kid. I'm not saying that they don't exist, but the manga took pains at several points to point out that he had no friends while he was growing up, thanks to the kids picking up the attitudes of their parents. Kiba, Chouji, and Shikamaru certainly didn't think much of him prior to the chuunin exams. Kiba's flashbacks were of him laughing at Naruto. Iruka had sympathy for him, but never really showed it to Naruto until the confrontation with Mizuki. Until then, he never had any idea why anyone hated him. I just can't imagine how difficult it would be as a child to never have somebody to comfort you or anything. He says that his goal is to be Hokage, but I think the real goal is the second half of that statement "and have everyone recognize me".

Naruto's pretty amazing also in that he's as optimistic as he is. And he never complains about that past or feels sorry for himself. He even seems to think that he's blessed.

Naruto would probably say that Sasuke had the tougher past. He didn't really contest Sasuke's charge other than to say that he had those things now and didn't want to lose them. I'm not entirely sure that I agree. The question of "better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all" is a tough one. But he had support after his tragedy if he wanted it. He had sympathy from the adults and he was the most popular kid in class. I don't see being popular just because you're rich, handsome, cool, smart, and the best athlete as necessarily being a drag. Maybe he didn't want all the attention, but at least he had some. Naruto had to make trouble in order to get any sort of attention.

Here's where it gets really tricky - the way that they handled it. Sasuke basically just brooded about it and felt sorry for himself. Naruto came up with a (fairly unrealistic) plan to fix his problem. Killing Itachi isn't a solution. It punishes the guilty, but doesn't heal his wounds. Still, it's not unrealistic that he lost to his rage.

I'd be tempted to put Haku as a close second to Gaara. Being responsible for his parents death (at least in his own eyes) is pretty horrific and then he got stuck living on the streets. But he was able to find something to live for, no matter how small, so he was happy again (at least of sorts).

Neji's another self-tortured sort, along the lines of Sasuke, but less tragic. He'd be fifth.

All of them goofing off in class isn't quite the same as them hanging out as friends.

Naruto and Shikamaru both fell asleep during class - not exactly the same as playing together.

Chouji and Naruto both reading comics and/or eating snacks might've meant that they're hanging out or it might've just set up Naruto as more of a goof-up for not listening to Iruka.

The group of them ditching instead of staying for detention doesn't mean anything either unless they stayed together. The guys in Breakfast Club got stuck in detention together and weren't exactly buddy-buddy (at the start, at least).

But you're right that there's a possibility that he may have had some contact with peers that wasn't completely painful. Still, I'm a bit more inclined to take the word of Naruto, Iruka, Kakashi, Sarutobi, and others that he didn't have friends. The three that he was with in detention all expressed nothing, but contempt for him until the 3rd round of the chuunin exams.

He still had his clan and his Dad seems to be quite fond (and tried to make him believe in his strengths), he also made friends with Shika quite early, so his life wasn't that horrible.
Lee's suffering have had to begin when he started at the academy (I think backwards noone really notices how unskilled a kid is in daily life) and as soon as Gai started to look after him he had new confidence and aims.

Naruto was playing at the playground and other kids were there. They weren't playing with him though. Yeah, they did actually stay on the playground at the same time as he did, but I already consider it established that the kids weren't as afraid of Naruto as the kids of the Sand were of Gaara.

We do actually see Naruto playing with some kids during the manga and anime. It's not during a flashback though. The kids that he plays with are Konohamaru, Moegi, and Udon (The Boy That Likes to Add Numbers Together). But he doesn't meet any of them until #2.

It may also be an exaggeration to say that he was hated by all the other kids, but it doesn't seem like he was more than tolerated. Hinata actually liked him, but she never managed to actually speak to him so she just watched and admired his strength in dealing with his loneliness. I'm not sure that there's a huge difference between being hated and merely tolerated to a kid anyway. To quote Haku, there's nothing worse than feeling that you're completely unneeded in the world. Not that there's nothing worse than seeing your family die or even killing them in self defense - just being extraneous. (That's still just his opinion.)

Above, I probably implied that I felt that Naruto had a rougher childhood (although I only said that I'm not convinced that Sasuke did either). But I'm not convinced of that either. I don't really think it's answerable because it has to do with the ability of the kid to endure their tragedy (but it's still fun to debate).

In the issue previous to the one from which you posted the picture of Naruto in the playground, it has Naruto saying that he thought that they were the same when they were kids because they were both alone. Except they weren't. Sasuke was talented and had everyone on his side. Naruto was the loser that couldn't do anything right. Sasuke chose to remain lonely. If Naruto did have the rougher childhood, he turned out better just because he was better able to endure it and find something worthwhile about it.

To put it another way, take two kids eating lunch at school. (The example is going to be exaggerated because I'm trying to make a point.)

The first kid gets a ham & cheese sandwich, an apple, potato chips, a sandwich bag of Oreos, and some money to buy milk. But the sandwich has too much mustard on it, the apple has a dent on one side, the Oreos weren't Doublestuf, and they were out of chocolate milk today.

The other kid's mom forgot to make him lunch. But a slightly more fortunate friend gives him the celery sticks that he had packed with his lunch, another friend lets him have a few sips of his juice, and he's able to cadge some Saltines from the salad bar and this time the Saltines are actually pretty fresh.

Which kid got the better lunch?

And which kid enjoyed their lunch more?

I think that both Naruto and Sasuke are stuck with the Saltines. But Sasuke is thinking about that ham sandwich and Oreos that he should've had and Naruto is just happy that the Saltines are fresh for a change.

Sort of teetering back, all of the others actually had parents at some point. Neji may still have one in fact. Have we actually heard that his mom is dead? Sure, she hasn't been around, but neither has Hinata's Ino's, Chouji's, Shino's, nor have the fathers of Sakura or Kiba. And we haven't seen either of the parents of Tenten or Lee. I think that Shikamaru is the only one for which we've seen both of the happy couple. I wouldn't really count Gaara for fairly obvious reasons.

Sasuke got everything taken from him just about, no one to really turn to, but while in the academy he started to develop, even more so when he was teamed up with Naruto, so the first time in a long time, Sasuke has people who love him and want to help him so that eliminates him.

Haku, I mean your dad killing your mom and he having to kill his dad, that mental trama is just as bad if not worse then Sasuke because Haku had to the kill someone whereas Sasuke didn't and Haku like Sasuke had no family to turn to, then came Zanzuba, although he didn't show it, he cared for Haku and wasn't heartless as he appeared to be and loved Haku cause he found Zanzuba, he is off my list, so I think Gaara is the one with the worse childhood.

Gaara had to live infear of himself as he had a cursed demon inside him that everyone feared, he knew only true love from the person who betrayed him and he killed that person and that person never could really never love Gaara. To know that he was the reason why his mother is dead and the fact that his own father is trying to kill him, unlike Haku or Sasuke, there was noone there for Gaara, hence he became the killing machine, hated and feared by everyone around him.

If it's just a question of whether or not the kid acted like a jerk in response to their upbringing, the only candidate is Haku.

Gaara's a murdering psychopath ... and on top of that he acts like a jerk to his siblings, who seem to actually care about him, despite being terrified.

And Sasuke was almost as much of a jerk as Naruto was in the early episodes (although in a less immature way). But while Naruto actually matured and showed empathy for others in sucky situations, Sasuke crumbled and returned to the maturity of a five year old. I think that trying to kill your best friend qualifies as being a jerk by most standards. At least Itachi had an excuse because he doesn't care about right and wrong. Sasuke cares (or at least used to), but chooses wrong anyway. I have a real difficult time with the idea that it's justifiable to try do bad things to people because different people did bad things to you.

Gaara: Everyone disliked/feared him. And on top of that, he was just a 'test', unwanted, the people he loved (or said they loved him/was suppose to love him) tried to kill him.

Naruto: Pretty much the same as Gaara, except, he's got friends and teachers there to help him, whereas, Gaara's been alone all these years.

Sasuke: His respected older brother kills the whole family for some stupid reason. But I guess people don't feel as sorry for him because he's loved by all women, and envied by all men..? haha.

Haku: Basically, it was like a "civil war" in his FAMILY. That's just sad. And, compared to the others, his childhood was worse because he didn't have a place to stay (unlike everyone else above) and he KNEW he was a tool to whatever his name was...forgot..lol.

Hinata: She's pressured...badly. I mean, she's from an advanced bloodline and all, and her dad's all expectant of her. And on top of that, her cousin is always verbally attacking her. I find that pretty bad...

Neji: The cursed seal...a dead father...what more is there to say?

Tsunade: Her brother was killed and so was her lover...

Shikamaru: I dunno...but is it just me, or does he dad not seem to really care about him? Maybe that's why he's "lazying" around all the time...?

Chouji: Everyone calling him a fat ass...(-_-'')...

Iruka: Parents killed, and acted hard when he was young to grab attention.

Rock Lee: Always being teased as the "stupid" and "talentless" one. And he always seems to be judged by his appearance..(which i find adorable)..haha. He works his ass off to prove himself and his belief(s). And he still stood up for his beliefs when he was UNCONSCIOUS...it must mean a lot to him..

Okay..what am I doing? lol. Sorry...I'm really bored, and I'm rewatching Naruto, so all this emotion stuff of each character is coming out...sorry!! >.<.. But I think all the characters had a really saddening past.....or at least most of them did...

As much as having an entire clan killed, I have to say having a monster sealed up in you is pretty bad. So I would say Gaara had a bad childhood.

At least with Sasuke with all the girl classmates loving him, he probably just shunned families who probably were trying to reach out to him or something. Whereas Gaara, well the only person he looked up to, hated him. How sad is that?

I'd say Gaara had the worst childhood by far. It's very heart-wrenching. He grew up devoid of all love, created only to be a 'super-soldier' (he was sealed with the shukaku in an attempt by the Sand to strengthen their forces, unlike Naruto was sealed with Kyuubi to save Konoha) but he was dubbed too dangerous and his own father tried to have him killed. Then his uncle, the only person who may have ever shown him care, tried to kill him and died spitting the curses of Gaara's mother at him. I can't even begin to imagine the anguish he went through, all those cold and fearful stares he would have been met with and having no one to turn to (at least Naruto had Iruka). It's no wonder he went psycho.

Gaara by far had the worst childhood.

Naruto at least had a goal to be the best. Neji a goal to become stronger than the other Hyugaas. Sasuke to avenge his clan. Haku to be with Zabuza.

Gaara had nothing, everyone tried to kill him, and his only goal was to kill others which doesn't seem to be to be a driving enough force to let one lead a normal life on the side.

Actually, now that I think about it, Haku/Kimamaro/Gaara had the worst childhood, but Gaara definatly had the worst life for the longest time.

I voted Gaara because he never found someone. Naruto had Iruka and eventually team 7. Sasuke had team 7 aswell. Neji doesn't even count on this list for me because was stable enough to make connections he was just a jerk. Even Haku found someone in Zabuza even if he was evil. Now Gaara was betrayed by the one person who he thought loved him and he never found people to really love him until his teenage years. We have a clear winner.

I'd say Gaara, Because noone has ever showed any kind of love, friendship or acknowledgement at all. Everybody just feared and hated him because of the fact that he has the Shukaku inside him.
Naruto is a close followup, cause since he was born, everyone in the village hated him because they feared the Kyuubi inside him. But Iruka finally acknowledged him, and Naruto finally got someone who cared for him. Narutos childhood is sadder than Sasukes because Sasuke still got the memories of a loving family and his parents. Naruto never knew what parents or family or even friends were.
Then we have Haku, and last, Neji.

Mmm. Gaara is an obvios choice. Born to be used as nothing but a weapon with the essence of darkness infused in him from birth. His powers made him feared, and that fear made him hated.

I simply cannot imagine a child coping with this. No friends, no close family; nobody. Up until this point his past is much like Naruto, except Iruka never tried to kill Naruto before blowing himself up. Gaara's one and only chance for true friendship was blasted away, something that no other character could ever really say. Though his family was slaughtered, Sasuke had every chance to make friends, find a lover, and live peacefully. Neji was able to train to subconsciously fight a destiny he believed could not be changed. Haku was found by Zabuza, who offered him a reason to exist and an ambiguous love that was never revealed to him while he drew breath. Kimimaro found peace in his relationship with Orochimaru, a man he served unquestionably until his death.

Gaara had none of these. He was the true essence of the perceived shinobi; a weapon and nothing more. His was a life of loneliness and madness where sleep was a luxury, where those around him existed only to be killed by him, where comradery made one weak. He did not have the opportunities his peers did when they were young. There is simply no comparrison.

geez this is wat i hate about ppl picking naruto first or second. naruto's pain stopped when he joined kakashi's team... EXACTLY. do u think sasuke's pain has stopped at all??? NO. do u think haku's pain has stopped at all??? He DIED in pain and misery. Neji's pain didnt stop until after he was defeated by naruto, which was after naruto joined kakashi's team.

so if ur going to run it by whose had the lnogest pain, itd be gaara, haku and sasuke in the top 3. followed by neji. AND THEN followed by naruto and lee.

i personally do not base it on length of pain and misery but on level of pain and misery and i coincidently happen to have the same order
