Rules:

1. AMV can be any anime you want.
2. Must be made for the contest. No pre-made videos allowed
3. Videos must be uploaded to a website and ready for judging by the deadline.
4. No Collaborations

Apart from these few standard rules, its an open-ended competition. Any wacky ideas will be accepted. Action, drama, funny..whatever! Just make it interesting, unique and high quality (easier said than done) and you could win.

There are no timelimits or file size limits (Within reason of course).

I work in a different timezone (Australia) so I’ll have to decide on a deadline based on your silly American time ;)

You can create more than one entry if you want to.

Entry:

Post in this thread with /signed to apply for the competition.

!!! Cutoff for entry will be May 15th !!!

You can start making your video now. Only the entries have a deadline so far.

After 15th of May no more entries will be accepted. The videos will be due sometime mid-June.

Prizes:

Consider this contest another award for your name or to get your name out into the AMV community. Winners will also have their names posted in a forum wide announcement along with links to their videos.

Notes:

The winners will be posted on the forums and you can attach the award to your vid on AMV.org. Everyone knows vids that win awards are 1000X more likely to be downloaded.

Handy Tips - What we're looking for

We want some top quality vids for this comp. So i thought i'd help you guys out with some common problems found in vids. Ofcourse, some of you may not need any of this info... but it could help :smile-big

Quality

Vid's that look good generally do better. Its a psychological thing i think... :blink

If your vid looks blocky and the colour is dull.. then you may have a problem.

Take a look at Fra-Chan's naruto vid... GREAT quality. No little block artifacts and no little black seams down the sides. Thats the sort of thing we're looking for.

If you're not entirely sure how to do this.. go to the AMV.org site and go to the guides section. Plenty of info there.

I think the DivX logo issue fits in here...

BEFORE you encode your vid in DivX go to the DivX config in the start menu and look for the disable icon button. DO IT!


Encode the video only ONCE... no encoding in WMM then again in VDub.. No no no.. Quality = bad
Remove the DivX logo
Clip out all the little black lines or seams on your vid. Make it pretty
SUBTITLES - REMOVE THEM!!! Unless of course they are vital to ur vid. And don't go using that as an excuse cos u dont know how to remove them


Sound

You're song has to fit the theme of the vid. It could be just a random song with random fighting... but unless you tug on our heartstrings or stir our adrenaline... your vid won't stand out.

Quality is important here too... Make sure you get the highest quality sound. If you're getting your song off a CD.. make sure its in WAV format. This is general easier to edit as well.. so thats a BIG plus. Less crashes in Premiere... Also if you work with the wav.. and it is a wav until the final encoding.. it will most likely sound better.

Generally just use an MP3 codec using, 41000hz, 192kbps, Stereo.

The "Lame MP3" codec is the one i use..

If you work with your sound this way.. it will general sound crisp and nice on the ears. Remember.. you're file sizes are allowed to be <100Mb. If you need over that than you're encoding wrong. You're song doesn't take up much space.. so don't worry about encoding it.. go for TOP quality.

(BTW.. you should easily get a good quality vid in around 50-60MB)


Originality

This isn't that important in my opinion. WAIT dont shoot me! let me explain! .

It can be original in that it is the first good vid of its theme

Eg. Sasuke or Naruto... WE've seen hundreds. But if it's good.. it get originality because lets face it.. most of these themed vids aren't good. THEREFORE making it original.

Presentation

This may seem a little weird.. but how you present you're vid is actually important..


File Name - make it something good like [Valur] Into the Darkness - The Fall of the Uchiha.avi This may seem a little weird. But it just looks more professional than darkness.avi
Opening - Make it catchy, funny, cool... whatever. Just make you're vid look professional.
Closing - Again.. we wanna see credit.. cos we wanna see the name of the AWESOME song! YEAH! Make it original.. again.. look at FraChan's ending :D very kool with the dog thingy of Kakashi
If you remove subtitles... go for the Letterbox effect. Find out how much you removed from the bottom.. about 60 pixels (whatever) then add about 60 pixel thick black strips up the top and bottom. You can do this in VDub easily in the RESIZE filter. Just play around with it.

Lip Sync/Effects/Special Effects (combined category for our purposes): 7/10 + reason/comment
Effort: 9/10 + reason/comment
Re-view-ability: 7/10 + reason/comment
Overall: 8/10 + reason/comment

Total: 63/80 Points

The judges will judge you just like on amv.org

Oh and btw.. if we decide to use public votes, the scores won't be taken using the forum polling system.. so no rigging the elections Mr. Bush. :blink

youtube lowers the quality a lot. use http://www.rapidshare.de or http://www.uploading.com for your needs. They don't lower the quality.

I think your editing has gotten better XD. You also matched the lyrics to a luffy gif I think (rubberman?). I'd have liked to see more new gifs, but you did this one well. All the dancing gifs go well with the song. XD

thats good glad you are joining :) yea 007 vegeta inspired me to look at AMV's differantly. although i still do AMV's with lyrics i like his ideas the best for AMV's.

im not saying effects are bad or anything but take final conflict for instance not as many effects as one of Diz video's but 007 planend it well and had a great theme behind it and had some effects to help out. thats what i over all ment.

Yup I know :) 007 made it flow perfectly with not a lot of effects but he also added lyrics. The lyrics greatly impressed me since it actually went with the video. I could see that lyrics could work with a vid and that you don't need lots of special effects to make a great video. :)

The type of video doesn't really matter. Anything allowed on AMV.org is allowed in the competition.

Would anybody know why in some videos there's pixelation occuring? I've heard it was the video's size but it didn't work nor would changing it to .AVI into .WMV

Pixelation usually occurs when the video quality is low. This means that regardless of it's format, if the video was low quality to begin with, it'll be low quality at the end. Pixelation can also occur if you're using a small resolution video and "blow it up" to fit with the larger resolution videos. This distorts the picture and can cause pixelation.

A good way to avoid pixelation is to use a HQ video for your AMV.

Hmm, well file size would normally be an indicator, but these days there are encoding methods and new file formats that basically preserve the original image quality but decrease the size of the file. I guess the only way to tell is with your eyes. Videos that have been ripped from a DVD are likely to be better in quality than a video ripped from the TV. Can't really give any specifics, though.

if it's a music video with something to do with manga/anime then go right ahead. Just look at videos like Believe by VicBond007. It was made entirely from 2D images to GREAT effect.

Wow, that person did a lot of video editing with those pictures. o_o My way of trying to make manga music videos is basically going with the beats (but with the pictures, not editing.) So this might be harder for me. :(

You can't take subtitles off of a video unless it is an .mkv file, in which case it may be likely that the subs can be removed in Virtual Dub. Otherwise, if it is an .avi file or any other format (to my current knowledge) you cannot remove the subtitles. You can, however, crop the video so that the subtitles are removed.

Atually, you can use virtual dub, but it will turn out really bad. Another way is to use Photohop, Premiere or After Effects for the best results. Besides that, it wont look that great.

yeah, if there are subtitles it means you're using fansubs as video material. fansubs = bad video quality so it will affect your score

I used adobe premiere and you could drag the edges to make it bigger. Then just move it down until the subtitles are no longer in view. It loses only a bit of quality and it works well :D

I've got nothing done yet. Got some other stuff to take care of. Thats why I am so thankful to MechaTC for this huge time frame. It gives me time to do it when I got some free time without worry.

Apparantly DiZ has won all the compitions except one. That really tells u how much effort and hard work he puts into his movies if he wins most of the time. Repeating certain clips, i took notice to some stuff was repeated not many but it was there. IMO if you do that try to add some type of effects to that and make it look cooler and what not.

Timing was good could have been better in certain aeras and what not.

I assume you did this in WMM? if so then this is pretty well done for WMM. thing about WMM i wish they give you more options to save it to a better quality intstead of WMM. there is 2 ways to help this. i have 2 programs that make WMM increase to MPEG 1 or 2 and you notice a big differance in quality i will post the program/ link in a little bit when i find them again.

Overall i liked the video not because of effects or because it was naruto just the fact that the whole Garra/ Naruto thing matched pretty well with the song.

like i said only noticeable thing i seen was the some repeats other than that great job :nod

Does it need a theme? Personally I don't do themes, I put what seems the best for the music. My favorite comment I got from a friend who doesn't know Naruto was;

"It sounds like a movie trailer"
my reply was "It is because it is the theme they used for Spiderman"
she said "Oh Cool!"

I don't like animation themes...just emotion themes. You can pick it out at parts...trust me.

I've been to busy with my schoolwork...I still have to put those credits in... but I got the rough done...I can release that...for now...

EDIT: Two vids right? *thinks* it ends June 15 right? I finish school of the 8th... can we enter a version two of a vid we made previously? On my YouTube I got one named 'Invoked to Battle 1.2' can I make 'Invoked to Battle 2.1' and enter it?

The credits are a little blurry, but that is the result of Movie Maker. It hates giving me clear credits.

Sigh...no one downloaded it with the error on it...

I took a look at my status on Invoked to Battle, and it needs a major overhaul, new clips, timing, and clean up on the cutting O.o what as I eating when I made it?

Cool song so using it for a future project i have in mind .

i will let you know something about WMM acculy some ppl proabably did this before but to get great quality out of WMM this is what i used to do before i went to vegas.

Every clip i took when i did in virutal dub i did not compress that video at all i left it uncompressed AVI format doing this the sizes ARE HUGE but when you add them to WMM and when your project gets done it acculy looks pretty decent. I might have an example laying somewhere.

Here are 2 examples of what i was saying before. THe bunshin speical is proabably the best example of the quality i was talking about for WMM. These never got done basically i was monkeying around a long time ago in WMM. both have soem matrix instrumental music in each.

I'm fine with the clips being compressed and so, a lot of my older ones aren't compressed. It is the credits generated in movie maker itself.

I can only export clips with the pixel size of 320x240 any bigger causes it to malfuction. So none of my AMVs are 640x480.

Vegas eh? I think I'll take a look into that.

The thing with huge clips is that it eats my free space, I have more then just Naruto clips on it, Rockman.exe clips, my schoolwork, music, my life basicaly. I'm already having problems with compressed clips.

ah i just delete them when im done anyways. intresting you can only export clips by 320 by 240 that seems to odd. now if you are talking about WMM crashing that used to happe n to me all the time but i fixed that and push out higher pixel size. the sizes usally range from 100 meg to 300 meg.

anyways i just wanted to give ya examples on how to make your video quality better in WMM.

yea i still have to add a logo that is still under contruction and credits. but i was talking about the guts of the AMV basically in that post.

the logo will be nice and it will pop up right when he says there we go! oo should be good. i just want a logo because BeanDaddy productions needs one!
