View Full Version : Reputation Disabled and How to Avoid it
Q: What is the reputation disabled usergroup?
A: It's a way to deal with people who abuse the reputation system.
Q: What constitutes reputation abuse?
Any one of several discouraged actions - in roughly ascending order of severity:
"Repwhoring" - Getting involved in a circle of friends to rep each other as much as possible and/or continually asking for rep, either with or without contributing something to be repped for.
Posting obnoxiously large or offensive images in reputation comments.
Leaving nothing but or almost nothing but negitive reputations or repeatedly leaving negative reputation for the same member for no good reason.
Revenge negging (Member A neg reps Member B, Member B negs Member A back).
Using flaming, cursing, and insults in reputation comments.
Leaving someone else's name with a negative rep.
Q: What are the consequences of being rep disabled?
A: You will not be able to give or recieve reputation from or to anyone for the duration of your rep ban. If you were a senior member, your PM and avatar allowances will revert back to normal user levels.
Q: How longs do rep bans last? Will I get a warning?
A: It depends on the type of rep abuse and the discretion of the moderator. Usually not less than two weeks. Frequent flaming in reputation and missigning reps can get you permanently disabled without warning. Since a rep ban does not restrain you from any other aspect of the forum, it's regarded as much less severe than a ban and can be placed without warning.
Q: What is the difference between rep disabled and disabled rep?
A: The former is a restriction from repping, the latter is making it so that others cannot see your rep bars, nor your rep-acquired title (like "is Celestial" or such).

Somebody did that to me. Used my name in a neg rep, and the person that was negged hated me for ages. It kinda sucked.
Yeah....
skmt999
03-27-2006, 09:14 PM
I had someone sign their neg rep to me with another name, once. I was kinda confused, since it really didn't make much sense for the name in question to have negged me for what I'd said. I'm sure it happens all the time. Misdirection.
Keep people off your back, and implicate a third party at the same time. Brilliant, if you don't have the brains to fear banning.

I must apologise. I did the neg rep thing once because I wanted to see a fight between Vince and Utah =/ didn't work out but still I'm sorry.
And I may have said a few bad things to Utahcrip via neg rep due to the fact I think he's an idiot and in my defence every post I negged him for proves it.
Still that's not an excuse.
My apologies again v_v

Absolutely, plus the following side affects of your punishments.

I love it, but it requires too much work to be actually enforced.
We don't have infinite Admins, although it would be nice to have more than four.
That, and a fair portion of the mod team fears any motion that might royally piss off a significant portion of the members and/or members with significant power/influence.

Got me there. But by 'no one' I meant the forum populace in general.
peK - I really think warnings would smooth things over. Let the serious offenders know this is serious. If you start smiting people with no warning - or even worse, giving SOME people warnings but not others - that's when a war cry will sound. Discrimination is an ugly word, even when it's accidental. If EVERYONE was given a set number of warnings and told publicly and often about said warnings, I think it would help. And for those too stupid to heed a warning, well they'll just have to suffer the pain of a rep reset. It will only hurt those who actually care about their rep, which is the point.

wouldn't someone just do this: make another e-mail account (i cant remember if you can have more than one account per e-mail) then make a forums account, then neg rep the person over and over (for any reason like, they hate them ore somethin') then when rep banned, delete the account, and the e-mail account and redo the whole thing untill people find out that it's the same guy, and ban his real account as punishment? (not gonna try it! i dont hate anyone here)
jkingler
04-16-2006, 04:22 PM
^That would be really pointless, because the new account wouldn't be able to rep until after 50 posts, and even then, the dupe account's rep would be so weak that it wouldn't matter (unless the target was an uber-noob with no rep).
And then the mods would likely delete the negs from the dupe...
Like I said, pointless. :oh

It seems to me that fully half of the "legal" reasons for neg repping someone -i.e. disagreeing with an opinion or a post- is a quick way to get on the mods' shit list. Change the rules or stop bitching.

Sometimes I notice I will say something specifically because I know someone will neg rep me for it. Not that I am trying to anger people (although my jokes don't always fly) but I want to say something argumentative in a discussion with someone because it makes the discussion better. When it's neg rep for something I believe I don't mind it at all, in fact in a way it's a compliment.

I don't think that people should neg rep for opinion. Maybe for presentation of opinion, but not opinion.
For instance, if there is a thread about homosexuality and someone starts saying "FUCKING FAGS'LL GO TO HELL!" he'll be the one to hell and back.
If they say "I think that homosexuality isn't natural but rather a choice, since evolution would have faded it out if it were genetic" then he's bringing up a point that helps the thread have a debate.

That's called repwhoring, and whenever the mods see it, they can delete the message and review the persons rep history in order to see if a repseal (stopping the person from receiving or giving out reps on a temporary/permanent basis) is necessary.

They repsealed me! :arg They say it's for revengerepping but isn't that when person A negreps person B, and person C (me) who is a friend of person B then negreps person A? I mean that's a rule that makes sense, some n00b is negrepped by another n00b and then calls in some friend with a giant rep-dick to neg that guy back. That's plain wrong...
But then I just read the OP in this thread and it says revengerepping is when person A negreps person B, and person B negreps person A back. Now what the hell is that retarded bullshit? When you negrep someone you know you can expect a negrep back, everyone knows that, and it's fair. Someone negs you, you neg them, it's the way things work. Same thing with posrep. If someone posreps you the polite thing to do is to posrep them back, right? Nobody is complaining about that, so why the hell is the other way around suddenly a problem? I've been negrepped back by every single person I ever gave a negrep to, and I never complained cause it's the fair thing to do...
So please, can someone here enlighten me on this issue?

If someone posreps you the polite thing to do is to posrep them back, right?Wrong.
Rep abuse constitutes the following:
...
-Repping people back just because they repped you. Also known as continuously repping back the same people for no acceptable reason other than the fact that they repped you in hopes you would return it. Not much different from the rep me and I'll rep you back sigs other than the fact it is an unspoken understanding.

Wrong.
Read the full rules here (http://forums.narutofan.com/announcement.php?a=116).
Ok, so I read them now and that's just one messed up rule man... :huh I mean what happened to politeness and just kindly returning a gift of rep? Sure, I understand that people abuse the hell out of it repping back and forth, and repping people for the sole reason of expecting a rep back and all that. But that isn't what i'm talking about here. Just isolated cases where someone posreps you for a good thing you said, and you simply thank them for it by giving a posrep back. Or the reverse, when someone's an ass and gives you the negrep finger for not agreeing with something you said, are you seriously saying you can't just give him a big up yours back? Again, i'm not talking about big strings of rep back and forth, but a simply eye for an eye. And i understand it's a rule, but doesn't this completely overshoot what the rule was meant for? To combat repwhoring and these whole strings of rep back and forth?

The intention of the rep system is:
Acceptable use for positive rep is to reward a good post, good thread, set (Avy/Sig), and/or good contribution (Pimps, translations, etc). Acceptable use for negative rep is to punish a bad post, thread and/or set (Avy/Sig).
You'll notice that it includes neither "thanking for rep" nor "an eye for an eye."
As for the rep rules, they are designed to enforce the above stated intentions. While the rules of this forum have evolved and will continue to evolve over time, it is believed that their current status is appropriate to current conditions. As the forum culture regarding rep changes, no doubt the rules will adapt.

So what exactly constitutes a good or a bad post? The post "Jiraiya is teh awesome!!!1!11" is not exactly a good post by any objective measure. So if i where to posrep it because i agree with it or find it funny, am I then in violation of the repping system? If that's so you might as well repseal the entire forums because that's what the majority of the rep going around here is about. A bad post is equally subjective... In my opinion you should not regulate a repping system towards objectivity when it is mainly used to reward and punish subjective matters.

What's so hard to understand? If you see something you like, then rep it. If you don't want to, then don't. If you see something you don't like, then neg it.
Don't rep people back when they ask for it, nobody is nice on the internet so nobody sees it that way when you rep them back.

You get to decide what is a good post or bad post. You don't get to decide whether that was a good rep or a bad rep.

I never repped back anyone because they asked for it. I'm just an awesome guy off and online!

That's just taking a system that's prefectly capable of self regulating (If you know someone will neg back, you know not to neg in the first place unless you can afford to because you are a well respected member who has been here a long time and is capable of judging a bad post or rep), and putting all this responsibility to regulate into the hands of moderators, diminishing the attention they can spend on true rep abuse...

Isn't that something that can't be monitored constantly: returning a rep if someone recently repped you? Honestly, I understand the standard rules for giving out a rep, but if it's not something that's continuously done, then a seal for it is unwarranted. No one may want to own up to it, but returning a rep after someone has done it is about commonplace.
The only issue that arises is when it's abused i.e. asking for it in a sig, or explicitly stating, in a thread or user CP, that you'd like a rep. In the case of a "bad rep," what's to say it was warranted. Because of the differences in opinion, getting a neg is possible when it wasn't called for. Someone can make a justified statement, only to receive a neg based on another individual not agreeing. In that case, do you return a neg (revenge neg) or make an issue out of it to the mods?
It's situations like that that makes you question the whole purpose of rep in the first place. The point has been reached where it'll constantly be abused, even with repseals and repslashes.

I never repped back anyone because they asked for it. I'm just an awesome guy off and online!I'm sure that's true; it's also apparently true of every member who's ever been a part a rep circle. That's what they all tell us, anyway as they rep whore each other.
That's just taking a system that's prefectly capable of self regulating ...The system is not, nor has it ever been, capable of regulating itself. In fact, until the "no revenge repping" rule was instituted (years ago, by the way, not recently) neg rep wars were commonplace. As common as rep whoring is.

Maybe the mods would like to check my most recent rep history. I'm getting tons of revenge reps for some reason. I'm getting tired of it.
