Akasuna no Sasori means "Sasori of the Red Sand" but if you literaly translate sasori, it means scorpion.

Many characters in Naruto are named after animals or food items, but part of their name only. Though Sasori by itself means scorpion. You can tell why since his puppet attacks are poisonous and his best puppet has a poison tipped tail.
