Which do you prefer more? Manga or novels?

I prefer manga more because I tend to find them more interesting than novels. smile-big But I want to hear your opinions. So what do you think?

Lol, happens in my school too. But they give novels that try not to bore the hell out of you. Doesn't really help. But still, there are some novels that I like to read sometimes. Like Addicted. A really good book that I like to read over again.

Novels by far, Manga just can't compete...

Manga in the face of proper literature is really just a few random picture's with speech bubbles. Reading the best books will suck you in and keep you there until you've done. Manga is just a quick fix for people with lazy imaginations...

I'll say novels.

That's not to say I don't like Mangas, but a good Manga requires the visuals, where a good novel creates it's own visuals.

Generally also, novels tend to get more indepth...

Admittedly, some excessively so.

i can't read manga sometimes as it requires my utmost interest in what i'm reading, but novels evolve over time and you can imagine what each character looks like, so i'll say novels

Manga in the face of proper literature is really just a few random picture's with speech bubbles.

This is not a very good argument. Following your line of reasoning one could argue that literature is just a few hundred pages of print.

Manga is just a quick fix for people with lazy imaginations...

I disagree. Reading manga or comics in general does require a lot of imagination. I know many people who just can't do it. For them comics are exactly what you called them - random pictures with speech bubbles. But tell me, when you read a good manga, do you ever feel about it that way? I doubt it. You have to use your imagination to see the story and the same goes for novels.

Sure, reading a novel and reading a manga are two different kinds of experience, but it doesn't mean one is better than the other. :amuse

Even though I read manga more, just because I keep my brain unhealthy like that, I probably like novels more. See, I enjoy manga because it supplies the pictures, but the reason I like novels more is because you get to make the pictures yourself.

I'm not a great artist so that might be why. What I can't paint with my hands, I can paint with my mind. I get frustrated sometimes, because I enjoy art and all, and I get these great ideas, but I can't get my hands to illustrate them. My comfort? They're still all there. Even if others can't see them, I can, and maybe it's better that way sometimes. You have to wonder why you think of a certain image, or imagine things a certain way - do your feelings and beliefs change the way you're going to mentally picture something? [/Getting wayyyyy off topic]

That's why I love novelizations based on anime series so much. See the Fullmetal Alchemist and .hack novels. :amuse

Novels take longer and yea.......

Sakura Kaijuu
03-11-2006, 12:14 AM
Both! :laugh

I'll read whatever I have on hand. I love my manga to pieces, and I read them over and over again (right now I'm in the middle of completely re-reading Bleach :laugh ). When I'm looking for more visual stimulation, I'll read my manga. Or my other comics. I love to just look at it in awe. It's my favorite part of comics.

But I love my books too. The other day I went to the library and checked out the second volume of the Abarat series and I went to a park and started reading it. I like looking at the words on the page. And sometimes I just feel like reading forever, and that's harder to do with manga, cuz those take me an average of half and hour to go through.

It is the curse of being the child of parents who nurture reading of any kind that is to blame for my indecision. :amuse

The answer is both! Sometimes you get more out a story from a novel because you can imagine all of the pictures in your minds eye, but manga is good because you really get a taste for the action and characters. They are both so good!

That's not a bad thing. I've been raised with the opinion that reading anything is good and that schools are dumb if they don't let students count comics for silent reading time.

It's one of the main reason why I have such a big collection of manga. Because my parents pay for them. :amuse

I happen to like both about equally, but for completely different reasons, and because of that, asking me which I prefer would simply be cruel.

If it involves an interesting and well-thought-out storyline, intriguing characters and compelling storytelling, I'll keep reading it.

manga against a long book... Just kidding, always manga... Reading without

If I had to give up on one or another, I'd choose to keep the novels. I love both, the truth is. Mangas are very entertaining and are pieces of graphical art. But novels are still incredible, able to move you without any picture, only words. There are more descriptions, details, generally, in a book too. You are free to imagine the scenes, the landscapes.

But hm. I love both :)

While I may enjoy my manga immensely, just reading the written word evokes so much more in my imagination. I can view the characters however I want, and things are so much more dramatic within my own imagination. Manga limits it way too much.

The one benefit of manga is that I can see what I've read in motion if it becomes an anime. Yet, with a book, I can hopefully turn that into a film myself.

yeah i tend to like manga more..for simple reasons really, pictures, and less text..I know that is so childish, but i do read novels also..but i get discouraged when the book is really thick..i guess i dont really have the patience..

I prefer a good novel over a manga. I like reading manga, of course, but I've read one in half an hour, 45 minutes if it's by Kaori Yuki, that's it.

But it already happened to me that I woke up Saturday morning(well, or midday, maybe^^'), grabbed my new novel and started to read, and didn't leave my bed until I finished the novel at the late afternoon, so much I was captivated by it.

I like reading manga when I go somewhere by bus etc., because they are small enough to fit in my handbag, but for a really good read a prefer a novel because most of the time the plot is more interesting, the characters have more depht and it simply takes longer before I finished it and have to buy or borrow a new one.

It's difficult for me to say. I love reading manga stories, they're awesome, but I'm always having to wait for the novels since it's all one continuous story. But it feels so nice to just sit down with a nice book.
So, for me it's a tie since I can't really make up my mind.

I prefer manga to novels. Mangas can make you understand the story much faster (I won't say better but definitely faster) than novels. I'm the more impatient kind of person so that's why I choose manga. As the proverb goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Novels are all well and good, and are more prone to captivate you and make you not want to put it down. But I like manga better because it's drawn, I can see what's happening rather than try to figure it out from confusing sentences and incorrect prepositions. Plus, I like the imagination of mangas over the majority of regular novels. As far as novels go, the only imagination is sci-fi, which I can't stand.

Manga > novels.

I think all in all I prefer novels over manga. As much as I love manga, novels are much more detailed and exciting. I get to see it in my mind the way I interprete it, instead of how others do. Manga, on the other hand, is a great quick read, and always make me want more.
But, in the end, my all time favorite is a manga series that has its own novelizations. Best of both worlds.

I prefer novels myself, I am just very picky about what I read. A really good novel will always be my choice over a manga series. They just seem to have more time to develop, and the time you spend reading a novel gives you more of a chance to connect with the story.

There are different types of art. We have "idea" art, musical art, visual art, and interactive art, listed from left-to-right in their stages of maturity.

Visual art has a strong, eye-catching premise. It is exceptional at physical characterization, concrete metaphors, and mantaining suspension-of-disbelief (as in, it's easier to believe something is real when it's staring down your face). Movies, plays, and manga fall into this catagory.

"Idea" art is the use of rhetoric to convey a story. Its strengths are characterization and introspection, and its major problem is catching one's attention. Books are the meat of this category.

Which is superior? Don't make me laugh. Everything depends on the adroitness of the author, his or her ability to forge a story with the strengths of a chosen medium. Or are we arguing over which medium has the best potential? How are we to know, when the best book/manga has yet to be created (and most likely never will be)?

It is elitist and futile to propone one medium over another. Those who read tend to attain a broader vocabulary, but so what? Art is wonderful in any medium. I prefer books, but I see the value in manga.

So, I pose an equally important question to everyone. Which is better: cheese or milk?

I used to love novels... that is before I discovered manga! You'll learn that I am a very uncreative person, therefore imaginating novel characters in my head is near impossible. And when I do pick how I want the protagonist to look like I have to think of all the others' looks; eventually I end up forgetting which look fit which character.

I find novels to be more engrossing than manga. Maybe it's because I've been reading them long before I ever started to read manga, which isn't often... The characters are usually better developed, and you have to exercise more creativity to make them come to life.

They're more stimulating to me, I guess.

haha... both... but it totally depends on my mood. If I'm lazy, it's manga all the way, but if I'm feeling sort of intellectual I'll go for the novel. I like both. Sometimes I am in a manga reading mood and sometimes I need something more thought provoking. When this happens I turn to a good book.

Nothing really beats a good novel, and a great story always is better than great pictures.

A manga can keep me entertained, but at some point, it always grows cliched and stale--no matter how good the series is. A good novel always manages to draw me in and keep my attention for hours on end, while I'd need to take some breaks whenever reading any manga (except for Death Note since it was just awesome, and being one of the few exceptions).

But really, I like both, though novels are better.

Novels tend to bore me...(well the school novels XD) but if it's something like The Da Vinci Code it gets me excited. To me, manga > novel.

Mainly, I prefer manga.
I like to read and it has PICTURES!! Most novels have a few pictures from time to time but I like to see the picture. When I'm reading a novel I'll have to picture it into my mind and see the main character as someone totally different then how he was drawn. (It can be good and bad. Sometimes disappointing if they look just terrible and I though they were awesome looking. :()

quick question: in what chapter/volume does part II of the manga start?

I've never really read much manga (am starting to now :P), so novels probably takes the cake here for me. :)

quick question: in what chapter/volume does part II of the manga start?

Not completely sure, but I *think* it might be Manga Volume 27, Chapter 239.
