For those that dont know about this author, he is one of the best in the fantasy genre. He isnt well known and probably would have never heard of him on your own, but he is definently one of the best and you wont be dissapointed if you give it a shot.
I recommend "The Sword in the Storm" to start out with, strongly deals with fate and destiny, and how it is intertwined in life. sick shit....

Gemmell is awesome, and his Rigante series is a brilliant run.
I'm preferable to his stand alones, such as Dark Moon and Echoes of the Great Song. Epic heroic fantasy all the way.
I think Stardust (pretty sure that's the title) is a gem of modern fairy tale telling. Of course, the Sandman series of comics .. have they ever been surpassed?

Erm, this thread is about David Gemmells writing.
While Gaiman rocks, he's not David Gemmell.
Lol. I suck.
Have also read Gemmell, enjoyed him when I was younger but find him a bit basic now...

I dunno, he's got a lot more depth to his characters than most fantasy authors, and he does a damn good job of making them truly heroic, with flaws.
If I'd have thought about it 2 or so years ago I'd have completely agreed with you but, strangely enough, I re-read one of his works about 2 summers ago, and was kinda disappointed. Perhaps remembering how much I liked it I hyped it up too much in my mind? He is certainly head and shoulders above most other fantasy writers, and he has a wonderful ability to draw you into his worlds; but I found his work lacking finesse, and cleverness.
I'm probably looking for too much, since fantasy is generally just about convincing escapist writing, not really intellectual stimulation ^.^

Well that's it.
It is about escapism, and I find that Gemmell does a fabulour job of that.
Some of his books come across as weak though, especially the Druss the Legend series.
The Rigante series stands as his strongest works IMO, though my faves, are as stated above, Dark Moon and Echoes of the Great Song.

I've read one of his books - Eye of the Moon or something. I know it was a bad place to start, but I was really disappointed when one of his most badass characters was defeated by love or something stupid like that. It had been a decent action fantasy up until then. :(
Arg, that sounds like the end of that Sara Douglass series..wayfarer redemption. If you've not read it ...
The big badass, took over earth kills anything final evil demon, gets eaten by a bear cub who represents love.
Yeah. er .. what?
I wanted to club myself to death with the book for having wasted so much time reading the six fucking volumes...just to have to put up with an ending like that >.<.

Well... He really is a good author, esspecially Winter Warriors had a... err... feeling... a feeling that is unexplainable. He has got his own taste of fantasy... but still, there are lots of better fantasy authors around.

I really like his books, I've read well over half of them. What do you all think of Troy: Lord of the Silver Bow?
