Advance Chinese

Seeing as there are quite a few of Chinese people on this forum, I decided to start a thread of "advance Chinese" for those of us who already knows some Chinese, but wants to learn more. My Chinese probably isn't the best since i was born and raised in Canada, but I'm sure there are lots of you here who can contribute a lot to the thread.

I guess I'll start with what we are learning in class right now because I like 文言文 ^_^

苛政猛於虎也

孔子過泰山側．有婦人哭於墓者而哀．夫子式而聽之．使子路問之曰．子之哭也．壹似重有憂者．而曰然．昔者吾 舅死於虎．吾夫又死焉．今吾子又死焉．夫子曰．何為不去也．曰．無苛政．夫子曰．小子識之．苛 政猛於虎也．

Note that this is written in 文言文, as opposed to the 白話文, that we use in modern everyday life. This is pretty much telling a story about when 孔子 was passing 泰山, and he saw a women crying by a grave. 孔子 sent his student 子路 to go ask what was wrong. The women explains that her father-in-law died from tigers, her husband also died from this, and now her son has also died from this. 孔子 ask why didn't she leave, and she replies that there is no harsh policies (taxes) here. 孔子 then tells his students to remember this, and harsh policies are as scary as tigers.
I might've translated some stuff poorly, please forgive me, if anyone can correct anything it would be greatly appreciated.
Now to translate some of these stuff form 文言文 to 白話文.
側 -> 旁
曰 -> 說
吾 -> 我
舅 -> 公公 OR 老爺 Depends on Mandarin or Cantonese. Essentially your husband's father.

Yea there are a lot of Cantonese speaking people in Canada. In my city up until probably 4-5 years ago every Chinese shop you went to was Cantonese speaking. I would probably say that in Canada at least 60% of the Chinese people that lives here can speak Cantonese. There's a lot of 越南華僑 here as well.

hey, I speak cantonese and live in UK too. Hull to be exact, 2 hours from manchester, and a long way from Milton Keynes. Can't type chinese for my life, I can hardly write it actually... I got an A* in Chinese GCSE and gave up :p
