xingzup
02-07-2006, 09:11 PM
There was a huge fire over in Cali, and they had to evacuate people from their homes and schools...
I haven't been to Boracay, but my family has... They live in the Middle East, and they came over for the summer holidays... But since I'm required to take up summer classes, I wasn't able to go with them there... -___-;;;

02-08-2006, 08:12 AM
ok... yes i am filipino and i currently reside in marikina city... at kung ang itatanong nyo ay ang pulitika dito sa pinas, hay nako... i quote ko nlng yung friend ko... "Same shit, different people" :laugh basically karamihan (i'd like to stress the word karamihan kasi di naman lahat ay ganoon) ng pulitiko ay namumulitika lang at di ginagawa ang kanilang mga trabaho... karamihan ng mga activist groups ay wala ding ginawa kundi mag-rally, sisihin ang goberno sa lahat ng masasamang nangyari sa kanila, at manakot ng foreign investors na siyang pinakakailangan ng economiya... everybody claims to be poor, but a lot of those people are not really poor (well in terms of "africa-poor")... at ngayon, nagtuturuan na ang mga tao kung sino talaga ang may kasalanan sa stampede sa Ultra noong sabado... personally, tingin ko ang city government of pasig ang may kasalanan doon... why? kasi tuwing mayroong show na nakakaatract ng madaming tao, tulad ng F4 thing a few years back, parating nagkakaroon ng stampede... yun nga lang eh di naman kasing sama nung nangyari noong saturday... in short, Ultra is a stampede prone place... na dapat inayos yung entrances noon pa. oh and one last thing, cory aquino, ousted pres. Joseph Estrada, and FPJ's widdow now join forces against the administration... argh... all they do is make more problems for the country. and an oil spill somewhere near boracay has done some damage to the beach resort island... ok enough rants
on the upside, the peso has been gaining against the US$ for the past 2-3 months... and it now up to P51=$1 from as low as P56=$1 because of the inflow of dollar remittances from OFWs... AND MANNY PACQUIAO TKOed Morales:laugh
so i think this is not the best time to comeback home... :P besides a lot of filipinos now want to migrate to other countries like canada which opened up for 200,000 FAMILIES to migrate there...
EDIT: i think im too negative on this post... :P well its because im sick and tired of seeing all this BS happen everyday... thats all... and its such a waste because our country is really very beautiful and is rich in natural resources... (we have tons and tons of gold in our mines but foreign companies are the ones mining them...)

whats up flips? Yep judging from philippines being a seperate island and its resources, that place would have been a paradise if it was untouched. My friend's say that politics there are so fake, and soap opera-like. He also said politicians are actors? They try to look like the most dramatic moral person in tv, but dont give a damn about the people who believes everything the news tell them...

Yes!! Ummm who were the people of philippines? how did filipinos came to be?
ok i'll try to explain a brief background... warning though cuz i ain't an expert in this field... but i had a lot of history classes so maybe this would be enough...:P
Filipinos are from the "brown-race" (i need to use the politically correct terms) which inhabited the southeast asian region... way before a spanish expedition, which was led by portugese man called Magellan, landed on philippine soil, Filipinos already had a typical eastern civilization. we had several trading relations with countries like china and other neighboring countries. also before the spanish priests came, islam was widespread in the southeast asian region including the philippines, which explains why neighboring countries are muslim countries. 1500 something magellan's expidition landed on philippine soil. from that point, spain sent several other expeditions and then colonized the said group of islands... the name Philippines was given in honor of the then current king of spain. spain colonized the country for more than 300 years. probably all that corruption and shit came from the spanish officials and priests that were stationed here in the past. year 1896 the filipinos started a revolution against the opressive spaniards. the revolution was done by a group called katipunan which was led by Andres Bonifacio. a few years into the revolution americans offered help to the filipinos. Spain vs America war began and was ended a few months after. then the treaty of paris took place... the treaty basically says that spain is to sell philippines to US for some ammount that i forgot. so now the americans colonized the philippines, filippinos were promised freedom but they never got it so they revolted again. thus the Phil vs US war came about (though in US this is just called the Philippine insurection... argh:mad ) the pilipinos lost and so more american colonization and more shit... WWII broke, Japan took philippines from US. 3 years of japanese "opression." america reclaims philippines after a 3 years... more shit happens and only the rich people got seats in the government. america then decides to give philippines independence because of the economic slow down that US was experiencing(great depression) philippines got several good and bad presidents through the years... then Ferdinand Marcos got re-elected... (first ever Philippine president to be re-elected... he do a ton of corruption and people began to revolt against him. he proclaimed martial law. 1986 EDSA(a very long and important road in Metro Manila) revolution happened. the first female president was put in place (corry aquino who was the widdow of oposition senator ninoy aquino who was assasinated on his way down the plane he rode from US). more shit happens then FVRamos got elected in the1992 election... during his term, philippines experienced huge economic growth... then Joseph Estrada won the presidential elections. he changed the government economic plans from services to agriculture which really hurt the economy. and also the asian financial crisis hit during his term. year 2001 estrada was accused of plunder and thus the impeachment process... during the impeachment trial, administration senators voted not to open the folder which contained the oposition's biggest evidence. later that day, due to text messages, filipinos started to croud again in edsa... this time most of the people are from the middle class and upwards... only the people who really understood the implications came... thus ousted estrada and placed the current VP GMArroyo to take over his remaining 3 years... most of the pro-estrada rallists were from the poor and so the suspicion of being paid came out. and this was later confirmed when "pro-estrada" rallyists were dispersed during the may 1 rally in malacañang palace. a lot of the detained people claimed that they came there because they were promised an ammount. argh... (thats why i don't believe in activist parites nowadays) 2004 GMArroyo won the 2004 election. and now the oposition claims that she cheated durring the 2004 elections... they want her down but also do not want current VP noli de castro(famous news anchor) to be famous...
so... i think all this shit about filipinos are really inherited from several cultures including the spanish and american cultures. and also poor education system here is the reason why lots and lots of people are poor. the government also is crap because a huge ammount of voters are poor because a huge portion of the population is poor and poorly educated... and thus they vote not for the qualities of the person but actually according to his/her popularity... a lot of celebrities win in elections especially action movie stars(ramon revilla, ramon 'bong" revilla jr, Lito Lapid, and many more) not that celebs are dumb, but most of them really do not have the qualities for leading people... and look at our present government now... its SHIT...
haha! ok its a very long post... :amuse and uhm... could you guys ask something more positive? :laugh i always tend to be negative when asked about history and shitty stuff...:P g2g... i still have a long quiz on eco... bye!!!

wow that sounds good ssouske...I learn alot..I guess philippines history can be outlined pretty easily since its still a young country..
Filipinos are from the "brown-race" (i need to use the politically correct terms) which inhabited the southeast asian region... way before a spanish expedition, which was led by portugese man called Magellan, landed on philippine soil, Filipinos already had a typical eastern civilization. we had several trading relations with countries like china and other neighboring countries. also before the spanish priests came, islam was widespread in the southeast asian region including the philippines, which explains why neighboring countries are muslim countries

Now that's interesting...so filipinos originally were middle easterners?? Or middle easterners that perhaps discovered and populated the area?
errr... not middle east... its south east or what western folks call the far east... i dunno what happened in the past but the south east asian region was a muslim region just like today(exept for Philippines of course and some of the chinese looking countries like vietnam...). the only possible explanation that i could think of is that there was a huge trading relation among the asian countries including the guys from western asia (middle east)

Prior to the arrival of the Spanish, it seems that the people living there were Malays (brown people? I don't know the correct or exact term) - the same as people living in Indonesia and Malaysia and the general area. I guess they were considered the "natives"
I'm not sure about the trading post thing, but a lot of people went (and settled) there. That would include the Chinese (a lot) and also people from the Middle East (not that many).

about the brown-race thing... its the politically correct term for malays or brown people living in southeast asia. politically correct since the term malay was given by the colonizers of malaysia(i think it was the british or the dainish) and it was used as a derogatory term just like saying "nigger" to an african american which is really baaaaad...

Oskar von Reuental
02-13-2006, 05:21 AM
Magkano na ba ang pamasahe sa LRT? Yung sa jeep?
Pag-alis ko, P5 yata ang isang sakay. XD
ssouske
02-13-2006, 06:22 AM
for the LRT line 1& the newly opened line 2, its P12 for the first 3 stations, then 15 for the fourth onwards. for the MRT, its a bit complicated but the 1st 2 stations are P10, next 3 should be P12 and the next would be P14. if you go from north edsa to taft avenue its P15
as for the jeepneys, P7.50 for the 1st 4km then additional .50? for every KM (im not really familliar since i don't ride jeepneys often.) as for the FX there was a standard P5 increase in most routes. so in the past something that is just P15 is now P20. and during rush hours, they charge you P20/25, malayo man or malapit ang bababaan mo... for busses, i dunno i don't ride busses since its rare for busses to enter our area in marikina. Gasoline i think is about P36-37 per liter. cheaper compared to other countries but still expensive considering the filipino salary... Metered Taxis go for P30 flag down rate then it gets complicated... just go to metered taxis and pay whatever the meter says, never every ride contractual taxies... they are a lot expenisve...
Oskar von Reuental
02-13-2006, 06:32 AM
Ah, I never rode the LRT, except when I was about 5 years old. =/ I either took jeeps or taxis (usually when with a group of people, or if I was lazy XD)
ssouske
02-13-2006, 06:51 AM
well the 2 newer train lines are way way better than the old one... i mean the old one looks like shit compared to the MRT and the LRT line 2.... the best of the 3 lines so far is the Line 2 because its new, computer controled, and its HUGE compared to the other two... the only problem with it is that it is soooo damn slow sometimes... and for someone like me who travels from marikina to manila, i need speed to be able to get to my class on time... tomorrow i won't be going all the way to recto because the southbound Line 1 is sooo damn fuked up during morinings so i'll take the old route before LRT2 was fully opened. i go down in cubao then take the MRT which takes me from cubao to taft avenue in pasay in about 25mins or so then the shorter ride in LRT1 in edsa station is easier to ride on...

in my opinion, its both the pasig city government's and whoever owns ultra's fault... why pasig city, it has been said many times over that ABS-CBN has sent many requests for backup to the city government... what did the pasig government do? sent a couple of policemen... yes a couple... thats not even enough to control a croud that huge... and why the owner of ultra? well as i said in one of my previous posts, ULTRA has been the scene of several stampedes in the past... why? because of the design of the entrances and exits of ULTRA specifically the gate where the stampede happened... it was downhill and narrow path... why in hell won't they change this before?!? the reason why those stampedes was not really publicised is because the organizers used redtape, media blackout, and other forms covering up shit... and this is what i admire about abs-cbn, especially their CEO gabby lopez, because they never ran from the consequeces... they never covered up the tradgedy. and most of all, they really helped the victims... unfortunately, the victims and the "VICTIMS" are taking advantage of the situation... and this is the darkside of filipinos folks... how are they taking advantage, well, first off, there was this lady that claimed a dead body to be her sister who went to the show, she got the body and had the funeral crap... she collected "abuloy" and had a gambling thing while they had the funeral crap... a few days later, the real sister came out and asked her sister to return the body... that fuking woman admitted that she wanted the money and all that crap ABS was giving out, good thing the real family came out and finally got the body of the woman... second off, the families of the victims get paid for the funeral expenses(thats normal...) after that, they want a lump-sum for the death of their relative(again normal), then they also want abs to give them jobs or businesses (which is really rediculous) and they also want abs to pay for the education of their kids and stuff...(WTH?!?) come on people!!! okay your relative died in the stampede, but do you really hafta ask abs to give you something that you, yourselves should be providing yourselves?!? :mad argh... as my dad said, "tradgedies may bring out the best in people, but they really bring out the darkside of filipinos..."

The writ of habeas corpus has been suspended by none other than GMA! Pati professor namin na si Randy David eh nahuli! what's more ominous is that she did not specify when to lift her 'state of emergency' declaration. waah! Pero lam ko sa consti, 60days ang maximum; nonetheless, the military and the police are empowered and justified to further commit human rights violations. hay nako... coup plots + more stupid people rallying for GMA to resign = GMA over reacting... and who wouldn't? but i think she went overboard by declaring "state of emergency." now the oposition has the excuse to call her a dictator...
and just when the economy was starting to boom... its really disapointing... our credit rating got better, peso value increasing, stock market was getting better, more foreign investors are being pursuaded to come here, some current investors were considering expanding operations, then boom... wowowee stampede happens, then landslides left and right, then the coup plots, and finally the huge rallys yesterday and the "state of emergency" thing acted like the icing on the cake... damn it
i do not understand why people can't see these things this way...
more political turmoil + coup rummors/plots = more uncertainty = lesser foreign investors/investment + possible pullout of current investments = peso value going down = stockmarket going down = economy going further down to hell(negative economic growth) = lesser jobs = more poor people = higher prices(higher inflation rate) because of less production of goods = philippines on its way to becoming a 4th world country(as in ala africa)... argh...:mad
on a side note, nag enjoy ako khapon kakatawa habang nanonood ng TV... ehehehe! parang reality show+japanese sentai show kasi yung news all day... its not supposed to be funny but i found something about it that is funny...:P WATER CANNON, FIRE!!!
@hesd
im begging you... please do not overreact about this situation... going to edsa will further create turmoil and will not help in easing the current problem... people are starting to overuse the "EDSA" thing... this is why i don't believe in activists right now... i think they are just being manipulated by politicians... oposition and administration alike.(weak arguments... cuz i can't seem to organize all the thoughts in my head right now)
argh here am i again whining and whining... i hate seeing our country in such a state... i just hope everybody would just STFU and do their jobs... maybe we can be something like singapore or malaysia in 10-15 years time...
anyway buti nlng at online na pala ulet tong NF... di ako makaconnect d2 sa NF since saturday last week... i dunno what happened pero ayos na cya ngyun... ehehehe!

Again, I would like to thank Betty for reviving the FC. And to think na ako yung ex-co-owner ng dating FC e wala akong ginawa. 'Sensya na, daming trabaho e. :P
Seriously, 'tong recent events - the stampede, the landslide and the rallies yesterday... just great.

ehehehe...:sweatdrop
lol! my bad... i edited my post once it all registered in my brain... XD
@despr8
finally another person who thinks almost the same...:amuse
anyway... i have some final thoughts... nawawala na ang saysay ng edsa... para sa ating mga pilipino, ang edsa ay simbolo ng kalayaan, at pagbabago. ngayon, sobrang gamit na yung "edsa spirit." siguro darating ang panahon na magrarally ang mga pinoy sa edsa dahil trip lang nila... wag naman sanang umabot sa ganoon... sana matuto nman tayong mga pinoy na ilagay sa ayos ang mga bagay bagay bago gamitin yang "edsa spirit" na iyan dahil aminin man natin o hinde, nakakasama din sa atin ang paulit ulit na pagrarally... dahil sumasama ang imahen natin sa international community.
at tulad din ng sinabi ni despr8... hindi porke't bumaba si GMA eh magbabago lahat... ang unang tanong ay sino ang papalit sa pangulo? noli de castro is the next legal guy... no offense to him but i do not have any confidence in his abilities of being a leader... change is something that comes through time... it may take 20 years or even 2-3 generations before we really do change... but for that to happen, we must start today... settle differences and cooperate so that we can jumpstart change... so that maybe our grandchildren or even our children could enjoy a better life.
anymore opinions out there?
Bisuke

Bisuke, maiintindihan ko ang desisyon ng erpat mo to go to the US.
Not that I'm persuading you.

To my fellow Filipinos
The youth is the hope of the fatherland.
Someday, I would like to see Filipinos living in prosperity. No hungry stomachs, no empty heads, and certainly no more greedy hands. Filipinos, ripping off the benefits of their handwork and enjoying the richness of this 7,107 island.
But for this to be possible, we have to have the right leaders. Leaders in its truest sense, like those who would serve selflessly and whose main priority are their constituents and not their pockets. But with our country’s current state, all of these would just seem to be far-fetched.
As our national hero puts it, “The youth is the hope of the fatherland.” But sad to say, today’s youth, is comprised with a spoiled generation. Surrounded by the latest innovations available, we unwarily took things for granted and forgot the much deeper issues covering our society. The reality is out there, waiting for some concerned eyes to look at them and take action.
But as we learn how to mingle with the masses and have a glimpse of the “real world,” we were able to discover the true role of our generation in the process of overhauling this already tainted society. Our country is faced with a lot of plight. Forerunning its banner is the US-Arroyo regime which promised people with heaven but only brought more suffering in return. Worse, they have taken more than what they give. Workers are still languishing from their minimum wage while the foreign capitalists are taking pleasure in the money they have covetously extracted from the blood and sweat of the working class. Education’s state is declining. Instead of having the highest allotted budget, it only stands third below Debt Allocation and Militarization. The backlash: poor quality of education seen on public schools and SCUs (State Colleges and University). On the countryside, farmers are still living in a feudalist era where the land they have been toiling for years is owned by a single well-known family, taking advantage on their illiteracy and lack of knowledge on their rights.
The challenge now is on us-the youth. We are bound to eradicate the current rotten system. This system which has long been putting poison on our mouths. In order to justify Jose Rizal’s words, we have to abrogate corruption, lies, and oppression using our own hands- hands that are willful to edify a brighter future to everyone. We may look young and weak, but this should not be a hurdle. We have a voice that should be heard, ideals that are screaming for change and justice. We should struggle to win, to fight for our rights, and to get what we all deserve to have.
To my fellow youth, do not just be content with your latest cellphone or the newest signature clothe that you wear. Do not just be content that you're studying in an elite school and will later on land a good job using the name of that elite school. There's a whole different world waiting for us. There're so much that we can do. Let us not waste our time. We have a country that is dying with corruption. One look with our fellow country men living in poverty and reality shall be unveiled in front of us.
Now, are we the hope of our fatherland? We'll make sure it’s justified.

i understand that hesd got this from some website right? but i just can't help but do this
To my fellow Filipinos
The youth is the hope of the fatherland.
Someday, I would like to see Filipinos living in prosperity. No hungry stomachs, no empty heads, and certainly no more greedy hands. Filipinos, ripping off the benefits of their handwork and enjoying the richness of this 7,107 island. i'd love to see this too... but with the lifespan of a normal filipino, even if we change now, only our grandchildren would benefit from this change... thats how long effects of change really shows itself.
But for this to be possible, we have to have the right leaders. Leaders in its truest sense, like those who would serve selflessly and whose main priority are their constituents and not their pockets. But with our country’s current state, all of these would just seem to be far-fetched.
i just want to ask you... who are the right leaders? in the real world no one is right/perfect... in the end, what we need are people who can really do their jobs. something like BF and the MMDA(well not exactly) the improvement maybe cosmetic but, what he has done to metro manila is astounding... he has done a lot but some just fail to see it...
But as we learn how to mingle with the masses and have a glimpse of the “real world,” we were able to discover the true role of our generation in the process of overhauling this already tainted society. Our country is faced with a lot of plight. Forerunning its banner is the US-Arroyo regime which promised people with heaven but only brought more suffering in return. as i have said earlier improvement in the economy does not happen in 2-3 years time... it takes a very long time... and it involves sacrifices in the short-run... we sacrifice now for the sake of the future... this is not just an economic theory... its something like the cliche "No pain no gain." a good example would be from the aquino administration... nothing really happened during that time... poverty and everything else happened during that time... but that administration planted seeds in form of programs and reforms... come FVR's administration, he started to reap the fruits of mrs. aquino's hard work... the economy was good... everybody was enjoying higher standards of living...
Worse, they have taken more than what they give. Workers are still languishing from their minimum wage while the foreign capitalists are taking pleasure in the money they have covetously extracted from the blood and sweat of the working class. consider costs, and the productivity of each worker before considering wages... same thing happens for companies... hindi din nila pinipitas ang pera sa puno... its a combined effort of all the company's divisions to produce, and sell goods... and make revenues... and with the current unemployment rate, wages are really hard to bargain for because of the lack of bargaining power of the workers... in other words, the reason why wages are low right now is because of the relatively high unemployment rate... people are pushed to either something or nothing...
Education’s state is declining. Instead of having the highest allotted budget, it only stands third below Debt Allocation and Militarization. The backlash: poor quality of education seen on public schools and SCUs (State Colleges and University). i agree that they should be spending more on education... but there are somethings which are more important... one is debt allocation... militarization is not that important but we need to really upgrade our troops... considering that it is 3rd i think its already moderate... but we do need to increase it more because of our HUGE population... where do we need to cut down? PORK Barrel... yes... the main source of corruption... senators and representatives don't need that... instead of giving money to them, just spend it on education and infrastructure... lets see who will be willing to run for senator or representative when pork barrel is taken down...:P
On the countryside, farmers are still living in a feudalist era where the land they have been toiling for years is owned by a single well-known family, taking advantage on their illiteracy and lack of knowledge on their rights. this one i completely agree with... for the past 2-3 decades production of farm goods has improved... unfortunately for the farmers, middlemen do have not increased the price they buy those goods from the farmers... the market price of goods in cities have risen but prices from sources never has risen... and as a result more and more farmers go out and seek other job oportunities... less and less people farm because the money they recieve is not enough...
We should struggle to win, to fight for our rights, and to get what we all deserve to have. i think its not just the system that should change... its all of us... filipinos should change... we always blame the system for everything... aminin man natin o hinde, bulok tayong mga pilipino... kailangan natin magbago, hindi lang ang sistema.
in my opinion, this statement is wholy written to exploit the current emotions that the normal filipinos feel... we should not just accept these things as is... we should not go to rally just because our professor or someone got jailed for rallying... we should use our brains and think critically, and analyze the current situation... and based on that, we should act like civilized, and educated people... lets face it... violence in rallys is not 100% from the police nor from the rallyists... its a mix of stupidity of both sides...
this is why i really hate debating with UP students/ideology... I sound like a mean, money hungry, greedy brat that knows nothing... :P anyway... its nice to see our generation has interest in such things... i hope this will teach us some valuable lesson so that history may not repeat itself...
I'd like to apologize now if i have offended someone... all of the crap i mentioned above are based on my knowledge as a undergrad economics student...
CHANGE TOPIC NAMAN!!! its too heavy...

okay naman yung old banner, neh?
Now I understand where the divergence lies: you are coming from an economist's point of view, and me from a vantage point of socio-political scientist. There are just some things that harbor an apolgia for the status quo.
The incarceration of my professor did not trigger my anti-Gloria sentiments. Rather, it is due to the compounded and entrenched bureaucratic ills that can be rooted not only to our 'kabulukan' (or so you say) but also to supra national entities, which include the US and the IMF-WB, among others.
If you want to call off this discourse, then fine. And I wouldn't call this a debate as there is no defined proposition to resolve.
And..Ermm..i can't believe that you consider debt servicing (which at present eats up 70% of our GNP)to be a worthwhile recipient of our revenues. Perhaps you still lack knowledge about the origins of our external debts ne? I would be more glad to help fill you in. Sadly, this is not the avenue to do just that.
I strongly recommend that you read Booty Capitalism (Alfred W. Hutchcroft) and Tragedy of Families (i forgot...ay nako di ko talaga maalala!?!<_<)
I shall leave it like this.

Heavy indeed the topic is. All right, our banner? I really am not a graphics person. Our old banner is orayt for me. But if someone can draw a newer, grander one, then why settle for less?

Wait lang... Don't you think this topic is too serious to be here? Wala lang... Just a thought... -___-;;;
Hehe. That's why I left it that way and not made any further interjections. Peace to you all. May NF not be imbued with atrocities typical of the present Philippines.
