As stated in the Hero book, there's a test you need to do before gaining a promotion. So there probably is some sort of Jounin exam, although it's probably more individualistic then the Chuunin exams.

You learn .. to sew really cool vests? Ah man, that'd be awesome because I'd be a jonin. I'll try to climb walls now.
Nope, didn't work, aannd now my spine is broken. Someone call some hospitals please.
Just kidding, heh
I can imagine it consists of some sort of test (duh), and maybe they would test your ability to be a leader by supervising one of your missions or something.
But I can imagine they wouldn't hold duels like they did for the Chuunin exam.

I thinks the jounin exam is more focused on individual skills. The Chuunin rank is about team work, while the jounin exam probably makes individual avaliations. Also, it must cover something about teaching.

Uh you know that the Chunnin exam is to find Jounin's right? As i remembered correctly the exam is to find ONE winner and that ONE winner will be a Jounin ranked ninja

No...its to pick chuunins. Hence why all the GENIN were taking the CHUUNIN exam.

It's probably another test or else if someone does perform incredibly (Shikamaru) they are automatically promoted.

It may variably be a test.
But I think it is only allowed when the Kage determines you have proven yourself in leadership as well as having skill and power enough to defend your team.

Its a test on individual skills. Remember at the waaaaayyyyy beginning of the story? Were kakashi tells them of the 66% change of failing, and all that? He also mention that genin are just there to see if they would make sutible canditates for jounin.

My first idea about hose exams is that the schema is the same as the chuunin ones, but more difficult. So, there is a test for inteligence, a survival, and a tournament.
For example, the second exam. In chuunin version, you start with one scroll, have two teammates and five days to get the second scroll. In jounin version it may be that you are on your own, you start with one scroll and have to get two within three days.
I guess the first exam would something far different than the one genins had to take, but it would also test the inteleligence. For example, the tas can be:
The basic task: There is a hostage hidden somewhere in the village. The participants are divided into two temas. Team A has to find the hostage and bring it safe anbd sound to the examiner. Team B has to fins the hostage and ,,killl him/her" (this person will be trying to fight back and escape).
But, to find the hostage, you need to know where he's/she's hidden. Now, it gets complicated, so listen real good:
-There are let's say 20 objects (like scrolls or teddy-bears) with pieces of paper hidden within. On each piece, there is a riddle, that has four possible answers.
-The objects are hidden all over the village and it's surroundings. Before you go to search for them, you are given a tip. (like for example: They are all hidden in places, that somehow link with the jungle).
-Next to each possible answer, there is a task (Like: go to the shop and help clen it up or go to person named Hiroshi and do whatever he tells you to do). If you complete the task, the ,,control person" for whom you're doing it, gives you another piece of paper. On the piece of paper, there is an information about the place, where the hostage is being kept.
-If you uriddlled the riddle correctly (you chose the right answer out of four possible), the information given by the control person is true. If not, it's false.
-You need to do more than one task in order to get hold of the information you need (and the information don't make sense unless you have more than one).
-Of course, the participants can battle for the pieces of information if they can't get them on their own or have not enough.
-You only have one day to free/kill the hostage.
In the end, the team that completed the task passes (Now it is complicated, isn't it?).
Now, the tournametn. It can be run at extreme circumstances, for example on the see, when it's storm (you have to keep chakra to remain on the surface). Or in a building that's on fire. Or in a cave that is so dark you can't see anything. Or I do no where.
Anyway, that's my idea, of which I'm not so sure.

did any of team 7 even make it to chunnin level? I remember the final examiner told Sasuke that he was now a chunnin, but it sounded later like nobody except shikamaru really got the spot.
