View Full Version : What color is Saturday?

I found this interesting question as a comparison of the logical value of what Ignostics find of the question "Does a god exist"?
Basically it proposes the idea of meaningless questions.
I personally find another meaningless question to be "What is the meaning of life?". It's akin to asking "What is the meaning of iron?". A similar question to the title would be "What is the color of infrared or ultraviolet?" Such questions would have meaningless answers without the ability to see such things.
It also delves into the idea of sentences constructed grammatically and syntactically perfect can be completely meaningless.
So what do you think of the idea that simply because someone proposes a question it doesn't have to have an answer, and even if it did, it wouldn't be meaningful?
Feel free to discuss any other question that was proposed in this post as well or related thoughts.

Even a meaningless question has meaning to whoever it's asked to.
For instance, Saturday is a golden yellow. That's what I believe... at least for now.

I don't understand the thread.
You can't have an answer without a question that means something.

Well the title isn't so much a question as its an introduction and example of the topic at hand. The nature of philosophy is the art of asking questions so to speak. However, some questions asked have no intrinsic value or answer and anyone given would be pointless and trivial.
I've left it with several topics open for discussion but I guess if you want a specific question, how about this
Does the question of whether God exists have any meaning/value? And if it hypothetically had an answer, would that have any meaning either?
Is contemplating the meaning of life anymore than a trivial and meaningless pursuit?

Im having the same problem. Everything has meaning, otherwise there would be no point questioning it.

"Everything has meaning"? Do you seriously believe that? Whats the meaning of a rock? Whats the meaning of space? Whats the meaning of not having a meaning or something that has no meaning?
Some things have no meaning. The problem is figuring out whether something must have a meaning before trying to figure it out. Which is why I bring up the question "What is the meaning of life?". Does life need to have a meaning?

meaning:
from the view of the person asking the question, that does things because of other things it will have meaning for him. Meaning means value and also truth of mechanics. You cannot know the entire truth because you cannot know about things outside your boundries(example:universe). The laws of this universe might as well be driven by another universe. When you ask what is the meaning of this phenomena, since everything in existence is corelated you are asking: how does the universe work. If you have just one known part of the mechanism then it does not mean or garentie that it could be applied to something else. Because of all that I have said so far it is stupid to first try to think how everything works before you start to life and try things(some people do this). Value is attached to the things you value. Things that you feel to need even tho it isn't really needed only wanted. Most questions arise from the need to feel good. Allot of questions have as their base a false view of yourself, illusions. For instance "self", what is it? The observer is the observed, there is no self. In fact all this persuit for "meaning" began because you started to get problems and you didn't understand them. Solving is another thing, you didn't understand the problem, the problem was you.
uh give me more questions.

To approach your original question in a broad sense:
I think that meaning is percieved and therefore created. Meaning is not a thing that a person is born with or handed. It is something that every individual must approach seperatly and create on their own. This, to me, is the greatest challenge humans face in their overal existence.
By the way, Saturday is dark blue, relaxed and smooth.:)

I don't mean what color is associated with Saturday, I mean what color IS Saturday.
For me, it will be grey for this Saturday. Next Saturday, it might be something else.

Could it be that while the answer to a question is meaningless, its pursuit is not? How else would we know if it was meaningless to ask the question in the first place? To quote a line from one of the greatest anime's of all time:
"The truth only has meaning when questioned by those who seek it"
Oh and Saturday is most likely a brownish yellow...

Mu. By asking the question, you unask the answer.
At least, that's the Zen way of going about it, and this seems to be a Zen-ish thread. :amuse

But there is no saturday or no colors for that matter, both are human inventions.

lol poor Insipidipity.
The interesting thing about these are questions, like what the colour of saturday, is that they dont match simply because they are human made concepts. Essentially there is no such thing as "saturday".
I think its the assumption that human make that things need meaning, because its part of their bases in understanding concepts. Like for example when your hungry your stomach makes noises. To us that means we need food. In reality its just a bunch of operations. If you dont do it The operations depending on will not function and slowly stop working. Its how its structured, for whatever reason, who knows. It doesnt necessarily mean anything.
Essentially we give meaning to everything, yet in reality, things are because they are, other then that is purely speculation because we can't prove a divine plan.
I think thats why religion has such a strong attactment, to believe nothing has meaning, even if its just God was bored one day is so valuable because the thought of having no meaning is simply unbearible, and science being also have the same concept that one day we will find an answer or give meaning to life.
I mean how many people like the idea besides me that there is no meaning at all to life? The concept of the way things are, are because they are. We have just been plagued with starting off in the middle with no explaination given.

Of course, all things are, by your definition, human inventions.
But by defining them, we make them real.

But seriously now. If one looks at the days of the week with each day corresponding to a colour of the rainbow, it would come out as follows:
Sunday: Red
Monday: Orange
Tuesday: Yellow
Wednesday: Green
Thursday: Blue
Edit Friday: Indigo
Saturday: Purple
Voila! There you have it. The colour of sexual frustration!
It depends on your logical orientation. If you're a positivist, then your interpretation of the world is that there is an objective thing out there; it exists in spite of us. If you're an interpretive thinker, then meanings are socially constructed and are embedded in the context of fluid human interaction; meanings are created, maintained and renegotiated.
God and Life are concepts that people have come to internalize as part of the self and therefore can not be dismissed as meaningless. We attempt to tease out the meaning from the seemingly meaningless.

pur·ple
Any of a group of colors with a hue between that of violet and red.
vi·o·let
The hue of the short-wave end of the visible spectrum, evoked in the human observer by radiant energy with wavelengths of approximately 380 to 420 nanometers; any of a group of colors, reddish-blue in hue, that may vary in lightness and saturation.
Or that's what dictionary.com tells me. I'm kind of color bind so they both look the same to me...

Ja, ja. I was out of it, and typed violet since they both contain an 'i'!! It is indigo - I have made the necessary changes.

Heh, quite an interesting topic. Saturday has always been a slow, resting day. I take that as my day off, so there is no significant work. The color I d use for it is light blue/sky blue, like a clear sunny day in Spring.
Hah, I wish I have more days like that. ;D

I think Saturday is a green-purple-orange. All three constantly fading into each other, so gently that you don't notice it. And they fade in and out of being extremely vibrant and bright to being darker and more subtle.
Anything and Everything CAN have meaning, thats the trick, whether it does or not is in the eye of the beholder. Each individual decided when something has a meaning. Nothing necesarily has a 'meaning', even if it seems so. You might say for example, a dictionary has a meaning, it is there for one to look up words. However, say for a deaf, blind autistic child.. does this dictionary still have a meaning? Thats what I believe anyway..

Not everything needs to have a meaning, because it would be a pretty dull and boring life if we knew the meaning of everything. I believe that the search for meaning is what makes our life worth living.
As answer to this thread's question, Saturday is a blue.
