I wrote bout Korean yesterday, but nobody cared :cry , so I'm doing it again
this time will be ALOT better.
안녕하세요 -saying hello to a person older than u
안녕히가세요 -saying good-bye to a person older than u
안녕 - saying hi (and bye) to ur frien or someone youger
Yes, anyways, so here I am, trying to teach Korean. :)
It is very hard to explain, but i'll do my best!!!
There are Korean alphabets, like English, but they are quite different from English.
For example, "ㄱ" is a consonant, and it makes "g" sound.
and " ㅏ " is a vowel, and it makes " ah" sound.
So, if you put them together, they become 가.
As you can see, there is ㄱ, and ㅏ, together! smile-big and like English, it makes 'gah' sound.
Now, I'll give you all the consonants (that I know of) and vowels (that I know of), and what they sound like, in English
so... here we go
ㄱ - makes G sound
ㄴ - makes N sound
ㄷ - makes D sound
ㄹ - makes R and L sound (now here, it doesn't matter, but i recommend L cause it's whole lote easier when with vowels)
ㅁ - makes M sound
ㅂ - makes B sound
ㅅ - Makes S sound
ㅇ - makes O sound
ㅈ - makes J sound
ㅊ - makes CH sound
ㅋ - makes K sound
ㅌ - Makes T sound
ㅍ - makes P sound
ㅎ - makes H sound
phew... that was all the consonants...
Now vowels...
ㅏ - makes A sound
ㅑ - makes YA sound (kinda. I donno how to put it)
ㅓ - makes UH sound
ㅕ - makes YUH sound
ㅗ - makes OH sound
ㅛ - makes YO sound
ㅜ - makes OOH sound (urgh this is hard :sweatdrop )
ㅠ - makes YOU sound
ㅡ - makes E sound
ㅣ - makes I sound
oh, and by the way there are more vowels, but this is the most used, and basic stuff.
So now... you can put together vowels and consonants to make your name, place where you live, and other PROPER NOUNS..
so, yes, that was all, and I hope you learned something (you better) and have a great time! smile-big

I definately agree. I made a pretty big mistake bringing Windstruck over to one of my friend's birthdays...We were all sitting on the couch with puffy red eyes and half empty tissue boxes lying around...her parents called some of their friends over and when they saw us looking like that, they all had this WTF? look on their faces...lol
Iijyanaika
01-30-2006, 04:02 AM
hahhaha, that's too funny. i've learned to watch these movies by myself in my house. so i don't have to worry about others seeing me after i'm all puffy, haha.
i wonder what it's like being in a movie theatre watching these movies, haha

01-30-2006, 04:10 AM
I watch these movies with my mum...and my sister. :amuse Lol I can bet you for sure that at least 85%-90% of the girls watching Windstruck in the cinema would be crying. But for me if I've cried really badly over a movie, if I watch it again I can't cry again...probably because I know what's coming.

Umm, you might want to keep in mind that to non-koreans, the writing in the first post is just a bunch of weird symbols. If you are going to continue giving lessions using your native writing system, then explain how it works so we westerners can follow.
In any event, id love to visit bouth halves of Korea. Seoul to look at all the cool stuff there, and Pyongyang to see just how wrong communism can go

I kinda know how to write the hangul...I'll just use the first post to explain it. :amuse I don't have the hangul on my computer so it's gonna kinda look funny when I'm explaining it...:animesweat
- When a single syllable consists of a consonant a "vertical" vowel, the consonant is written on the left and the vowel on the right.
E.g. 나 = na (left character: N right character: A)
- When a syllable consists of a consonant and a "horizontal" vowel, the consonant is written ontop and the vowel underneath.
E.g. 토 = to (top: T bottom: O)
If a syllable consists of a consonanat, vowel, consonaant, the final charcter is written on the bottom.
E.g. 록 = rok (top: R middle: O bottom: K/G)
I hope that made sense...

In order to learn pronunciation on the forum, than romanized korean words are the way to go. But try your best to actually learn the alphabet and read the words, because after a while the romanized korean words mess with your vocab recall.

ya... for some reason, they teach kids numbers in Korean in tae kwon do class... I never been to one, but that's what my friend said :P
Anyways, do they like, scream at you and stuff in taekwondo classes?
In korea they actually make them to 100 push-ups and scream at them and all the other mean stuff (except raping... hopefully) to the students, I heard. You know, like, working-out-hell or something
Nekko-Sama
03-29-2006, 11:23 PM
There is also the sino numbers.
The Black Knight
03-30-2006, 01:53 AM
oh yeah i forgot. They don't really scream but more yell. And yes they make you do 100 push-ups when you do stuff wrong. The higher levels like black belts do something to piss off the instuctor, all i can say is have fun, because you'll wish you only had 100 push-ups.
But also every martial art teachers numbers and that stuff in the original language. Like kendo, judo, karate, kung-fu, et cetera et cetera.
When we were the lower class belts we would stretch, run for about 15 minutes, stretch some more, basic exercises and poom se's then start the lesson. As you progress it of course gets more intense. And i remember in those classes tests were only like 30 minutes-hour at most. Black belt tests....whew. The test for my nidan rank was like all day. 6 in the morning, and didn't finish untill afternoon.
But yeah it helped me to defend myself, when I was jumped by 3 black guys. 1 had a knife too, don't know why they attacked me, but I'll say the regret ever doing it....hehe. They may have been bigger, and stronger, but they didn't know how to fight.
I love tae kwon do more than any other martial art, mainly because of its specialization in kicking techniques. It has so many advanced kicks. My favorite is kind like a backwards hook kick. Or I can't remember the name of another one but you jump up in the air, and with a series of moves you kick the persons stomach, solar plexus, and their chin, all before landing on the ground. I know so many ways to break someone's ribs, neck, arms, legs with my foot its not funny. Although I would hopefully never have to use any of those. It was a fun and useful class. Even though I forgot the words. The academy was owned by, I think it was....Byung Lee

oh, wow, it must have been some experience... three guys jumping on you with a knife?
for me..my instructor will ask us to do exercises like pushups, running n etc...then follow by patterns, self-defence n etc...
after traning my instructor will talk during the last hour..he can talk bout anything non stop...most of us will just sit there and day dreaming...sometimes he is not talking bout tae kwon do, but just his grandfather's story....very boring....
our exam is just pattern n sparring..no knife or woods ...
mayb different country will learn different things...but now since i stop for few years, i cant remember much bout the patterns and numbers in korea...

Yup I immediatle disarmed the knife guy and got rid of the knife, because I don't like to do stuff like stab someone. He charged me and I sidestepped, grabbed the knife-hand and twisted it to flip him on the ground while taking the knife from his hand. So when I got a chance I tossed it as hard as I could. Not being racial about the black guys, just saying that there normally bigger. Especially me whos white/japanese (mainly latvian and japanese). But even though I was smaller I knew what I was doing all I did was beat one to the ground where he didn't wanna fight anymore, then I knocked down two of the other guys to get a chance to run away, as I personally rather not fight, it's just not really in me. They were like 6' something and me I'm only little 5'6" but I got through that without getting hurt. I guess I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time
Yup my Saa bo num (I can't remember the proper name, i think its right) would talk for a while after physical training. We had seperate days for sparring.

Hey guys, I've never noticed there was a 한글 thread.:nod
Anyways, I don't actually have a korean name. My korean name is
한필립. Basically, my english name with a korean accent. :cry
Anyways, here's the numbers, both sino and native (Cardinal Numbers).기
수, Pure Korean Numbers (한글솟자)
You use the sino for things like counting money, amount, dates, days, month, weeks, years, the minutes of the time, etc.
The cardinal numbers are used more like counting objects, things, people, animals, the hour of the time, and age.
To tell time, you say the cardinal number first and the sino numbers last. So the hours are in cardinal, and the minutes are in sino.
For Example: To say 5:45 pm, you would say, 다섯 (Cardinal Numbers) 시 사십오분 오후(Sino) 오후 is a term used to say "afternoon" which is used after 12pm. Can't remember at the moment what term "AM" is.
Cardinal Numbers 기수
1 = 하나 - hana
2 = 둘 - dul
3 = 셋 - set (se-th) It's really hard to pronounce the "ㅅ" at the bottom so it's pronounced as a "th" but too strong and it's not a "S" sound either.
4 = 넷 - net (Ne-th)
5 = 다섯 - tasut (ta-suh-th)
6 = 여섯 - yosut (Yo-suh-st)
7 = 일곱 - ilgop (eel-go-b)
8 = 여덟 - yodol (yo-dol)
9 = 아홉 - ahop (Ah-ho-b)
10 = 열 - yuhl - (yuh-l)
For numbers after 10, you're just putting them together, but you place the "10" first before the number, So for 16 you put the "10" first (열) and then the six (여섯) last so it's like adding, 열+여섯=열여섯 (Yuhl-yu-suth)
11 = 열하나 - yuhl-hana
12 = 열둘 - yuhl-duhl (Yuhl-dul)
20 = 스물 - sumul (Su-mul)
21 = 스물하나 - sumul hana (Su-mul hana)
30 = 서른 - suhlun (Suh-lun)
40 = 마흔 - mahun (ma-hun)
50 = 쉰 - schwin (Schwoo-ee-n)
60 = 예순 - yesun (Yeh-sun)
70 = 일흔 - ilhun (il-hun)
80 = 여든 - yuhdun (Yuh-dun)
90 = 아흔 - ahun (ah-hun)
100 = the 100 number is pronounced for both ways which is 백 "Baek"
I'll write the Sino numbers later today. :nod

I never liked to go to Lotte World. Seem like a waste of my time, although they do have pretty nice scenery. That's probably the only reason I would go. :) Sadly, I don't have an authentic korean name. My mom just never gave one to me.:cry I'm also the only son without a middle name. My little brothers have my dad's middle name, but I don't. I'm the oddball of the family, although I'm the eldest son. :P
I speak Korean at home, I can read (somewhat) and read in Korean fairly well. Although, my Japanese is almost or par with my Korean now, but I still can't figure out the damn Kanji. I would also like to learn 한자 but maybe later on. :notrust
Anyways, my languages are now starting to mix in together and I would usully mix my german with japanese words, korean with japanese sometimes and english is just as messed up as my French. LoL :laugh

Yeah yeah Korean an Japanese evolved and developed seperately and happened to be very similar. Korean is not as phonectically limited as Japanese, but it's similar with verbs at the end, topic particles, etc.
Hoon ♥
10-27-2006, 11:49 PM
hmm, if im not mistaken, the korean language was made 100 years ago by king sejong :headscrat
and 100 years ago, japan ruled over korea
so king sejong was probably fluent in japanese as he made the language
i have a feeling that im terribly wrong but oh whatever :P
The Black Knight
10-28-2006, 12:15 AM
no it was a lot longer. I believed hangul was invented in something like 14th-15th century maybe.....?
The languages remained isolated for many years, and made hardly any contact with each other. They are almost the complete opposite of chinese, and they just happened to be very similar. (chinese is very similar to English)

^The modern Korean alphabetwas invented by King Sejong in the late 12th century. The Korean language was used starting in the 7th century. Back then, Korea was one of the most powerful asian country. They also built the world's firt iron plated ship. Look it up. The Korean language originated from Mongolian but it was no relation to Chinese. Its language is similar to that of Japanese, so the grammer and wording are quite similar.
Korea had many wars with Japan and won most of them, untill in the late 1800s, Japan finally decided to accept Western countries, like the United States, Great Britain, and France to modernize their country, train their troops, and eventually drove them out once they got the sources and power they needed, and invaded Korea, in which wasn't modernized and had a poor monarchy rule.
Japan only won cause they were modernized faster than Korea did, actually Korea never did get modernized until the end of World War II and the Korean War.

My mistake on the history of the language, modern Korean does have some roots in Chinese. Why do you think our country is "Hangook" in Korean? That's because we were naturally the Huns from Mongolia and eventually started ruling Korea. So "hun" is the type of tribe we're from in Chinese, and the "gook" is "people" in that country, so we're "Hangook" in Korean, but "HanGwoah" something in Chinese. Pretty fun to learn these things. LoL

Other definitions:
A broom, besom, Example: 비로 쓸다. (To sweep with a broom)
Ratio, proportion, contrast
A queen consort, crowned princess
A deceased member
A tomb, monument)
or, non; un; not; anti-, unscientific. unpatriotic (비 애국적

Hoon ♥
10-30-2006, 11:08 PM
to get into UC schools, you have to (i think) take the SAT 2s
you can get a possible of 8000 points
4000 = 4.0 GPA
2400 = SAT 1
1600 = SAT 2
in SAT 2, you can take any 2 tests
whether its science (bio, physics, chem), math (CE 1, CE 2), history (world, US) or language (korean, jap, spanish). i didnt name all of them, there are plenty more

I'm glad I took it before they changed the whole SAT around. It used to 1600 perfect but now, they added another section and now it's 2400. Poor kids. SAT2 Korean is not mandatory. You actually can choose your subject and take it.
