This is an excellent piece of fiction, by Mark Haddon. It's written from the perspective of an autistic boy. It's a bit different, but I couldn't stop reading it.
Anyone else read it?

What's it about?
I mean, general ideas..something to spark interest here.

Well, it starts off with Cristopher, the protagonist, investigating the murder of his neighbor's dog, and I can't say much more than that without spoiling stuff. It deals heavily with our own society, since it's seen from a different perspective.

Okay, that'll do.
I'll take a look for it and see if I can give it a run through.
A look at our society sparked by a dog's death. I'm sold.

You'll both love it. It's one of the best books I read in 2005, ranking up there with Brave New World and 1984.

I have heard nothing but good things about this book, and the description on the cover flap really reeled me in. I think, having seen this thread and having been reminded about this book, I may just have to go to the store and pick it up. :oh

I stopped reading half way though, there is just something about looking through the eyes of an autistic person that doesn't sit right with me, its just some the bullshit he comes up with makes me want to kill him.

I read it ages ago, yes it's a good book. I thought it had a really interesting way of been written (does that make sense?). I also hate the underground tube so I could totally relate to that bit of the story. :laugh

I absolutely adore this book. It really puts you in the mindset of an autistic person. I actually did it by audiobook and it touched me like few books have. The train station sequence was the best in my opinion. In that scene you really grasp how all incompassing a handicap this mental disease truely is. Even the chapters are in prime numbers because it makes more sense than the normal sequance does to the protagonist. Plus, without the emotional drive because Christopher doesn't have normal emotions, you still can easily sympathize with the trama he goes through due to his lack of understanding and ability to interact with his surroundings. A masterpiece, IMHO.

read it awhile ago. loved it. puts you in the mindset of an autistic boy and does a good job at it. very believable. the length was just right too.

I thought it was a good book, the kinda thing you can read in one day if you really wanna plough through it.
It was very touching too. I remember the spreading the fingers out to 'hug' his parents really got to me.
I was wondering though, how much experience with autistic people has Mark Haddon had? Because this is only his fictionalisation of what it is to be autistic and was just wondering how he would have gone about it. The little author bio at the beginning of the novella didn't answer those questions. I may look it up.

Hmmm... it sound's like a good mystery case. But what kind of stuff does it deal with? Is it like CSI, or the Hardy boys, or is it a little more violent? Please tell me more, it sounds very interesting.... and I'm too lazy to look it up... too troublesome :notrust

God, I love some of the lines from that book . . .
What was that one about something meaning either your an idiot or I want to have sex with you?
Ok--had to go look it up . . .
from page 14-5
"Sioban says that if you raise one eyebrow it can mean lots of different things. It can mean `I want to do sex with you' and it can also mean `I think what you just said was very stupid.'"
I love that one!

I should check this out since my brother is autistic and he is thirteen years old. I could correlat what the main character is feeling and what its like in real-life. To write this book, he must've had a lot of experience, if everyone is saying its really good. I'll check it out over the summer.
