I too would like to draw, but I am a freaking dweeb so can you tell me how to draw a manga character like, say, Alucard from Hellsing?

If not, then Hitsugaya Toshirou from Bleach. Seeing sa he has the best looking secretary I intend to make some strange twisted comic version of Bleach for myself...w00t?

Hey jef! I want to draw superheroes. What do I do? What do I read? What do I think?

There is only one solution *shuffles through archive like a swiss woman* watch this educational movie about leaves which are supressed in the early Ottoman empire.

I'm not about to trip on an Ottoman Toby my good man, I'm not Dick van Dyke.

Mirror-drawing?

Jef88
01-04-2006, 04:02 PM
mirror drawing is rather hard to do i mean make a print of something nice you saw on the net or take a book and copy from there
*working on a super hero tuturial now*
what kind of hero you wish allready have half a typical superman look-a-like
and will do some detail work on the face

i'll find that calm, sad, innocent sexiness myself...if such a thing exists...

Jef88
01-06-2006, 01:21 PM
oke face shouldnt be so hard to explain cause i allso made the NF portrait thread XD
um you basicly start with a cirkle
then you see whats the half of the cirkle and that line u put youre eyebrows on and top of youre ears
but it can vary from face to face
*i'll make a quick sketch and scan it :amuse
its much more clear that way

and if you can post a drawing so i can see what you think you do wrong its a hell of alot easier

Yo Mr Jef, I have a question for you :)

do you have any tips for drawing manga style hair in a clean, defined form? I can never get a nice look to it.

actually finding this tricky to explain, it just doesn;t have such nice clean curves and lines to it as I'd like but I don;'t know what to do to improve

its something like that anyway...

Jef88
01-11-2006, 04:55 PM

i realy never tried real manga hair my self befor but i'll try too check it out for you my friend

I tend to pay too much attention to one part or another... then there is no continuity to my drawing with everything looking good individually but as a whole, not looking quite right.

what should i do to solve this problem?

Jef88
01-11-2006, 05:50 PM
this sounds crazy but
say you put all youre attention on the head and it looks great
then start sketching (only sketching) the body
and stop drawing
look at it befor you go to bed
and sleep over it (several days is even better)
then take the drawing and start working on the body as if youre drawing a new drawing :amuse

do not start with one part and working out from that part it's better to sketch everything from the start
the whole pose etc only let the details out and then continue an other time adding all the details

the longer you work on a drawing the better (i think its like that for me could be diffrent for you :amuse) just take youre time for every aspect and dont rush it
then you will be oke :thumbs

Feathers!

Actually, it very alike to the manga version, though a bit more curves...

I learned by trying...

As for angles themselves, well think of a head as a 3-d object.

Jef88
01-14-2006, 04:35 PM
you want me to explaine everything i use and do?
i use a technical pencile of 0.5mm or 0.3mm
and regular print paper or sometimes high quality
than when i have a good idea i realy want to work out
i start on fealing and make a rough sketch and start edding more and more detail
and most of the time i stop there XD :amuse
but sometimes i take my thrusty school pen and a bit of inkt and water
and inkt every line there is cros mark the pieces you need to feel fully
give it alot of time to dry
and then erase it
and than use a brush to inkt the full parts
then i scan it in (using photoshop for that the scanners software sucks)
import it in ps and shrink the size by half or more
save it as a jpeg and upload it on http://www.imageshack.us/
then the work is done

but you prolly want more detail dont you? :sweatdrop

Hi, i've just bought new pencils (Derwent Graphic) and umm... i know it sounds silly, but i'd like to know how to use them... well. How do i shade objects and, more importantly, people? And how to draw water? ^^;

Jef88
01-28-2006, 05:37 PM
i guess my reply is even more silly :sweatdrop
because there normal penciles and no technic penciles makes it very easy to shade just look from which angle the light commes from and you just make the opesit-side dark you can just make alot of lines or cross hatch it all it all depents on youre personal tast
about the people i'm make some work on it later :amuse with some examples
water is all about copying pictures but not use lines for water best is to shade instead of using hard lines

http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/4280/mermaid29od.th.jpg (http://img64.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mermaid29od.jpg)

And I tried some shading in this one, mainly with the clothes... I'm not sure how to shade faces, so i didn't want to risk it *rolls eyes*
http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/5582/animegal11mo.th.jpg (http://img64.imageshack.us/my.php?image=animegal11mo.jpg)

i like youre drawings :amuse
there good
like i said in my previos post lines arnt so good to make water but it aint that bad :)
there is in youre case not realy a reason to shade the faces but if you want to you just need to follow the face lines
shades in the clothes are best: under the breasts, where the sweater comes close to the pants or skirt, and the folds in the skird
but the drawing is good enough :amuse
just keep them posted :thumbs

yo jeff-hizzle

I'm back for more help :P

this time its on heads, I can manage fine to draw profiles and front views fine, however I'm having troubles with keeping consistancy in other views.

For example, I'm working on designing a character at the moment and I like the look I have from a front view and from a side view but when I want to move to a 3/4 view it completely stops resembling the character.

Then I also have a problem with drawing characters looking up and down, I block out the forms and think it looks right, but when I come to add the detail to the face it turns out looking like a differently drawn person looking straight out rather than the same character looking down/up >.<

any suggestions other than more practice?

(hope that made sense :P)

Jef, how can I draw cartoon versions of myself and my friends?

FrouFrou
02-18-2006, 10:13 AM
ok short question:
did i do the shading right in the following pic ?
(it´s an paintpic, because i don´t have a scanner and my camera is broken and it´s more of a study)
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c66/jonnitao/bild344.jpg

well, the question is, is the shadow at the right places considering the light comes from, where it comes from?
oh, and a second question
do you prefer that kind of shading ( getting darker by puting more pressure on the pencil) or by crossing several layers ?

Jef88
02-18-2006, 02:10 PM
first things first what is that thing you want to ad shadow on?
the shadow straight under the lamp shouldnt be there for the rest the shades are A-oke :thumbs
and i prefer multi layered drawing
use more presure only when you want to make something jumb out or making it look important :amuse
shades dont have to be hard they have to be overflowing

FrouFrou
02-18-2006, 03:17 PM
did i get it right, you want to know what this thing is?
no idea, something our teacher drew on the blackboard. something round with a hole :oh

Jef88
02-18-2006, 03:21 PM
so if the light comes from the sealing its oke :thumbs
but if the light is comming from behind the (lets call it a doughnut) its has to have alot more shades :amuse

FrouFrou
02-18-2006, 04:02 PM
ok, combined three things
http://img485.imageshack.us/img485/6569/jef885vh.th.png (http://img485.imageshack.us/my.php?image=jef885vh.png)
first from up there ... somewhere .. whatever, you know what i mean ...
the one in the middle from behind
and the last in front of it . i´m not sure with this one.
i know there must be some sort of shadow and i somehow feel that the shadow of the outer line must be a bit thicker than of the inner line :/

Jef88
02-18-2006, 04:06 PM
its good :amuse :thumbs
only the middle one should be grey everywhere except in the inner boder because that the only point that gets light

Jink
02-18-2006, 07:22 PM
I've noticed that good practice is drawing something by sight alone. And if your drawing something refrences are OK, it doesn't make you a cheater (the concept of using refrences held me back a few years) :laugh For me I always have problems drawing something in proportion with the drawing, Like when I draw an eye then the other one i draw looks lopsided and retarded. Tips would be appreciated

Jef88
02-18-2006, 07:37 PM
reference is very good use it as much as you can :amuse
you can try to first start out with semetric drawings so you can just mirror the other eye
or practise alot on one area alone copy alot of pictures etc

BUT be sure to use youre basics Guiding lines
put a line were youre eyes are at the same position above and do the same for under the eye so you wont have any diffrent size problems
this can be done with every part of the human face
:thumbs
i hope it could help out if it didnt or you want to know more just ask :amuse

Just got done reading the whole thread, some nice tips, but not what I was looking for yet.

1. Can you explain how you make people look at different angles? I know that little circle thing, but I don't know how to get them to turn their head to the left or right a little (or up and down as well) and trying to make everything look right with it. If that made sense -_-;

2. Can you explain proportions? I know the average human has that 8 head thing, but what do you do for the length of legs exactly? I tend to make my drawings look like midgets or something.

Also, how big should the hands be compared to the body? And the fingers compared to the hands? I hope i'm not confusing you. :(

3. How big should the nose be, the mouth's distance between nose and chin? I tend to just guess on that.

4. Folds :cry they are so annoying to try to understand. Could you help me know where and how to make them look more realistic? Pretty please with rep on top? :nuts

I took some the tips from that picture and made something different.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/Virtual_Alpha/Narutopicwithjefiasdnstufafsd.jpg
(you'll need suck proof glasses to not burn j00 eyes)

My evil artist friend told me what was wrong with it (mainly he pointed out the feet sucked again and that my legs are too short~~!) I thought I was doing the feet right since i used that picture as reference. :(

Anyways, he says the legs are short too, but I don't know what i'm doing wrong and he never tells me because he is evil! :evil

Besides those, any suggestions that he didn't point out yet?

Jef88
03-02-2006, 06:16 AM
your friend is right :amuse
the legs are to short/thin and the feet look weird
i think the croutch has something to do with it but i'm not 100% sure
(maybe the head is to big or the limbs are to skinny :))
i think it would be very usefull now to have a naruto picture next to you

I drew something to practice again, I didn't want to do Naruto again so I did Deidara. Sadly, I couldn't fit the rest of the body in because I didn't plan ahead :(.

Anyways, anything wrong with this new drawing? I have a hard time with hands and folds...they are evil.

and do alot of premature detail work (wich realy is a bad way to start)
cause you should start with a basic sketch of the movements and major joints :amuse

Hey Jef I have a question. I've been practicing drawing once again but I have a bit of a problem.

All of drawings I need to observe something, I'll draw pics such as something from Naruto or Kenshin but I enlarge the picture and basically its a copy (thats a harsh word... sounds like tracing almost...) Anyways in all of my pictures I use guidelines which helped me out a lot.

My question is I have a very hard time drawing from my head but when I watch and draw something it come out really good. Will I be able to eventually draw from the top of my head and be creative? Because now I'm just sketching what I see.
Or are there any specific exercises you would recommend?

angelic_purity
04-21-2006, 06:39 PM
I've been drawing for some time now and I've realized how all my drawings look alike. It's easy to draw anime characters because I copy the features, but when I try drawing an original one I fail miserably to make them have different faces.

I have no idea how to fix this.

God Bless!

i realy need to update this place with awnsers

if you want your drawings semetrical you need to draw your drawing and turn it around and put it against a window (where the sun is shining) so you can see through that will help you with errors that have to do with an unsemetric shape of the head and place ments of the body parts :thumbs

Jef88

jef could u show me how to draw realsistic hair?

there isnt alot i can explain about it but i can give an example
like this one i made a few months ago
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/1723/kain88kg1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

the key trick is to draw a basic shape first (shonen mangas stop here allready)
than you use the basic shape of the hair as a border where you do not pass with your lines
now you keep filling up the basic shape with lines in a realistic movement
if your doing it right the lines will look like hair one you remove the basic shape after wards

just use a hell of a lot of lines :thumbs
that will do the trick

I thought gradient-map was this weird photoshop function thing in which you could get a picture go grayscale, but instead of black to white, you could have red to yellow.

Like this:
http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/5295/gradientmappingsm6.png

Perhaps you are talking about the preset gradients? just doubleclick on those, and then a gradient-editor should come up, you could try to create new gradients with that...

Hi i was wondering how do you make sigs shaped like rounded rectangles? i found another tut but it was kind of under explained for me.
i'm no proffesor at making sigs
but i'll try to explain but dont blame me if the explanation sucks XD

you make a selection of the shape you like once the inside of the sig is done
then you press ctrl+shift+i this will reverse the selection only being the corner that you dont want
than just delete them
be sure your background layer is changed to layer 0 by double clicking the layer and make it transparant by removing all the white

save as a PNG file
and the transparant background of PS will become the background of the place you use it in like nf for instance :amuse

i hope it helped a little

its not offtopic
you can ask what you want if its art related here
i myself get inspiration everywhere
but if i'm realy deperade i go on DA and use the search option
http://www.deviantart.com/

Games, manga, comics, anime, music and movies work like a charm for me
and when dealing with character design
you gotta think about there personality ask your self the question what he/she is like and draw what matches the character most

as for the action look
just look around for nice pictures of people in cool poses or postures etc
that allways help if you wanna ad more action/dynamics to your work

Hey jeff newbie here, when Im actually drawings my charaters or trying to put someone in a pose i always miss with human proportion.. but when I do fanart copying it (not tracing) i do it alright.. do you have any tutorials or something to help out? please and thank you

Jef88
09-04-2006, 05:34 PM
think about head proportions
i posted some pictures on previous pages about anatomy and proportion
but some people find it to be a little to lifeless

but think about the distances and sizes
a head goes 8 (for big people) in a mans lenght
or 7 times for a medium
6 for a female

things like the upper arm is equelly long as the under arm

try finding the picture on one of the first pages
if you dont find it ask again and i'll reupload it

hmmm
i myself have had that problem to sometimes
maybe it can be fixed by changing some setting in the scan software (be sure to write down the original ones so you dont mess up the software)
did saw a good tutorial on DA about clean scanning i'll look it up :amuse

A very basic question (and my apologies if this is the wrong place to ask): How do you center your sig?

Edit: I realize this is in fact, the wrong place to ask. I'll be on my way.

its oke
i can awnser that
go to user cp and to the edit sig
and just select youre sig (in the text form) and click on the centre button above the place where you type (it looks like a few lines above each other)
hope i helped :)

I wanted to ask you a question about drawing in general. It seems that some of my drawings from when I used to draw straight from the computer turned out good. But I have a book on drawing mecha and it shows that you're supposed to use shapes to construct body portions to get the overall image complete. So is that how all drawings are done (including all the manga you read), by doing shapes first, then constructing?

that is a nice drawing you got there :)
what you ask is true
its best to start with a sketching a base all is good if you do it with squares, circles or lines
its allways beter to start with a base
just so you get it right from the start (which isnt so important when you are copying but still very usefull)

Hey Jef, first time poster here. I've been having problems with getting the anatomy right in characters lately (as seen with the Hitsugaya drawing). Any tips on correcting this? Sorry if the question's too broad.

no need to apologise :)
only thing that can happen is me giving a bad awnser :P

well i can give you pictures of people in diffrent poses showing the atanomy
but it helps as much as a normal person
i would say look very close befor you draw
but thats more a good advice than an awnser to youre question
that and practise anatomy isnt something you get right in a snap
its a colab between a study and an art :)

hope this helped out a bit if not post again and i'll try to look up some pictures that can help
at the moment i dont realy have time enough to make them my own :sweatdrop

Thanks for the advice Jef, my mind tends to drift when I draw people and I can never get the body parts to "connect." If you don't mind, could you post any pictures that could help me study anatomy? I won't mind if they're not you're own. Thanks once again!

I guess I'll ask another question then and thanks for the reply. Um...I always have trouble constructing arms, hands, and legs. How exactly do you construct those parts of the body?

Jef88

:p
its getting late here so if the awnser isnt that correct blame it on that
i draw an arm in 3 parts starting with the shoulder/arm connection point which is more circulair than i have the upper arm allso draw it in a circulair shape than you have the lower arm which you can construct with a long triangle at the elbow and a straight part till the arm
but that is just the basic if you draw that do it realy light so its easy to erase
than you connect it all in a fluid line so you get a more lifely/human shape instead of some geometric figures close to each other
looking good at a picture as base is best when youre trying this for the first since every arm is diffrent the basics shapes will have some slight diffrences to
(i'm calling it a night now bye :glomp)

I have a drawing related question;

How to you draw shoes and feet in correct perspective?
I've had trouble with that.

Jef88

that is indeed not an easy part to draw
with the good reference it might go a bit better

but try to reduse it to a basic shape
i'm gonna ad a drawing to show you soon

^ not sure, man, keep your sketchbook away from public places. Draw better ones! that would help you cope.

Hey, Jeff, is there a database of human anatomy or models posing in different ways online?
