View Full Version : Are you afraid of dying?

All beings have a survival instinct that makes them try to avoid getting hurt or dying. But only humans can be afraid of death, since we are the only species to understand what it is.
I personaly think of my physical body as a fine suit. Its not the whole world if it gets destroyed, but its expensive to replace, so id rather have it in one piece

I'm not religious, I do not believe in heaven. I do not feel there is some great holy paradise that we shall all bask in for all eternity. Nor do I wish for there to be. However, I am a firm believer in reincarnation. Perhaps not so much because I truly believe such a future exists, but more likely because in my eyes, the chance to return to this world as another being, and live life for a second, third, fourth, fifth and so on time, appeals greatly too me.
For this reason, I tell myself that death is not the end, it is potentially only the beginning. But my body simply refuses to listen. High places get my heart racing, and skiing nearly did me in. However, even if I do someday end up living again, it will not be as who am I now, so yes, I'd much rather continue existing in this form for the time being.
i'm not afraid of dying .Death will come to us for sure. But of course i don't want to die any. There're so many kind of food that i've never eaten , so many songs i've never heard , so many films i've never seen. so now i hate to see Grim Reaper

You're 17 years old. Don't be so hard on yourself. There's much time to make amends for bad actions, or just lean from them to move on.

Depends on the situation. I'm only afraid if a homocidal maniac rushed me into death. I need to feel accomplished and tired as hell to have no fear of dying.
I know Im scared.
Every night when im depressed I think about dying, I dont wanna die, but I know I will die once. And that makes me scared, what will happen after I die? Where will I go to? All those questions, and I still dont have an answer.

Yes, I am afraid to die. People now adays are so weird, when there are terrorist attacks, they are so scared that they can piss their pants 10 times in a row, but in other cases, people also commit suicide for loss of loved ones and other stuff like that. I mean, human nature is so complicated, that I don't even understand how the world works anymore

I will be honest and tell the truth - Yes, I am afraid of dying. Is there a soul? I for one am not sure at all. Now if such a thing exists it's all fine and dandy, but if it doesn't, which in my mind there is a 50% chance of, the consequences are very scary, to me at least. The thought that my consciousness will disappear completely is almost incomprehensible to me, but sometimes I do grasp the concept, in terrible moments of sudden insight, and it is in these cases that my fear of death becomes apparent. Normally I don't go around being afraid, but the fear is most definitely in there, ready to lash out whenever I think about death to much.

Dying is as natural as birth...Its funny how people try so hard to avoid it knowing they do not have full control over that event. God, nature, time, I dont know who does but once they say its up it is up...No vitamins, youth cream, exercise, or money cant save you from death.
Now we have so much controversy...Death is starting to scare me. Euthanasia is a popular debate everywhere now. It turns out that we need laws to regulate death since society have different moral values about it...I wouldnt be surprise if we all need a legal right or document so we can die without hassle in the near future.

I honestly in my heart can say I do not want to die.
I'm afraid of dying because it would mean missing my point of living and possibly causing negative effects to those close to me. Any act of wanting to live or killing oneself is fear of death IMO.
One way or another, there is fear if you have something either pushing you over the edge of life or tying you to it. From the moment people learn to breathe or reason, they fear things. If all things are either connected to life or death while those are connected, it means everyone, no matter how small... Fears death. :amuse

it means everyone, no matter how small... Fears death.
I mentioned this in the first post. Everything thats alive avoids death, but only humans únderstand that death means the end of their (physical) existance.
A rabbit on a high ledge will get scared and run away, but it doesent know WHY it gets scared. A human does, and can thus be twice as afraid as the rabbit

This is almost impossible to answer. Some of us might think we are not afraid, but unless we have been in life-or-death situations, we really don't know. I chose the second option, mainly because the first option doesn't suit me (I don't care what happens after death). I still have doubts about whether I am afraid or not, but the thought of death doesn't usually disturb me that much. I did almost drown once, and that was terrifying. I think a lot of us can think about death and not get scared, but when actually faced with it, it really gets to us.

I'm okay with dying, just not with suicide. You die when your time comes, that's nature. As some cablewalker dude says: "If you die, you die. What can you do about it?"
I also happen to believe we live twice.

Well I'm a little afraid of dying, especially now. I'm sure the fear gradually decreases as you live your years. My biggest fear of dying is dying alone, which I'm sure everyone agrees with. If I die, I'd want to know that I made an impact on my friends and in the world.

Sure I'm afraid. Stop and actually think about dying: absolutely no thinking or anything. As far as we know it's truly %100 nothingness. No more experiencing good times with important people, no more seeing the things you want to see. You can't honestly just shake off that idea like it was nothing.
Yeah it's a part of life but it's not the most pleasureable, comforting thought out there.

I think the thought of death is a bit scary, and I try not to think of it much. I wouldn't want to die now because (as cheasy as it might sound) I still have things I wanna accomplish. After I'm done dealing with my issues, I wouldnt care about dying. If there is nothing after death, then I guess it makes death seem a bit scarrier...

Do i want to die - No
Am i afraid of death - Yes if it painful.
If there is a Heaven (Which i hope there is) I would love to go there, but i have a feeling if you goto Heaven you can only do things that you have done when you were alive. So say you never had sex while you were alive, you won't be able to do it in Heaven.
Weird i dont understand it myself. LOL
Death is such a natural thing in a way, so I don't fear it. Even if I don't fear death itself, the process of dying is what really bothers me, because I would prefer certain ways to die over other certain ways to die.

I'll truthfully say I am afraid of dying.
It's just scary how you can't really stop it and everything ends for you at that moment.

I'm terrified of dying. It's the only unknown I'm afraid of; I mean, you con't exactly investigate death unless you die. And I don't want to die.
I guess you could say I have a mortality complex. ^^
When you die, everything you ever worked for goes right down the toilet. All your accomplishments, all you've ever achieved, everything you've ever done, gets burried with you. And after that, sure your family remembers you and what you did, but in time, they, too, will forget. And you become nothing but a photograph in a photo album, or a name for someone to compare another person to.
This might come from the fact that I have not set belief in what happens after you die, but still, I don't want to die. I'm afraid to die.
If I had the opprotunity to become immortal, I think I'd take it.

I am a bit optimistic towards death, it is inevitable...although, just because I die, does not mean i cannot come back to life. it is hard to explain, but I believe(i dont believe ina God right now) that if there is a god, I can choose(you know, free will) to not go to heaven nor hell, but transcend my humanity and come back to this world with all the knowlegde i gained during death..yes, it is a weird way of believing, but if I have true free will, then God cannot do anything about it, otherwise free will will be a facade..
As most people, i'm not afraid of dying, but i don't want to die. :oh

Well, I would like to be able to say that I don't fear death at all, but the truth is I do to a point. Fear because it would take away things that I enjoy and things I haven't got yet but hope to enjoy in the future. Likewise, even if fear is the closest and most appropiate word I can think of, I don't feel it's a perfect word for how I feel towards it.
I don't want to die yet. I will fight for my survival at this point in my life, obviously, since I am alive after all. I wake up each morning, I go about my daily business, I enjoy some things and hate others, I smile and weep. I'm alive because I have things to do, and if I'm dead I just can't anymore. Thus I do, ultimately, fear death.
Still, I do know that I don't fear death to the desperate point where I will mourn and writhe in desperation when it actually occurs or if it is required for a much greater purpose. Everything dies, and so will I, that's a nautral fact and really not such a horrible thought. I like my life, but I could give it away to something that would benefit someone else and thus give me peace and the feeling I've done something good before I go out.
All in all, I suppose my answer is that yes, I do fear death (even if I could say I simply avoid it, I think that would be tickling my own ego), but at the same time I am comfortable with it as such. It's going to happen, and if possible I just want to be happy when it does.

Call me an emo.
Fixed.
I want to use life for what it is for; game theory. To improve my life and the life of many others. To see the world in it's grandeur, to fight the pestilence of mankind, and to spread mankind's radiance to those that lack it.
To breathe, to fight, to struggle, survive and overcome;that is why I treasure living.
Death scares me for only one reason; I won't be able to help those I love and those that lack means. Beyond death, there may only be a grave, a mindless white plain, or another universe. I don't know, I doubt anyone on this mortal plain does. I'll embrace it when the time comes, and allow myself to fade away with dignity.
Life is as free as you make it. Sure, true freedom is impossible, but then agains nodboy possesses it. To say death is liberation is delusional because you don't know what lies beyond. The slave called the Emancipation freedom, only because he did not know what lay ahead.

However, even if I do someday end up living again, it will not be as who am I now, so yes, I'd much rather continue existing in this form for the time being.
nice point of view, similer to mine, but not that much. about 2% like mine.
lots of people have being saying in this thread that they're not afraid of death. so let me ask you this. "if somebody put a gun to ur head would you tremble?" if so your afraid of death. understandable though, most people would. like i said before humans are afraid of the unknown. lots of people say/do what's expected of them but not what they truly want so say/do. and some time they talk without comprehending their own answer/advice.
i would say im not ready to die just yet. and would do anything to keep going. went i'm 60 death can come at anytime. and i dont intend to get soo old that i cant move or cant take care of my self. if that were to happen I'll be the one pulling the trigger. one thing i deffenerly would hate would be for some mf to take my life. so over all i am afraid of dying right now. i dint felt that queit fitted. in answer #1.

I didn't read everything, quite honestly because I'm just checking to see if post count is working in the cafe, however...
I think there should be more poll options (especially in the cafe afterall).
I mean, one looks like a spiritual view, the next would be the average human being and the final would be MTV's Jackass.
Are you looking to see if people fear their own mortality? Or are you looking to see if people harbor feelings of invincibility or like to TEST their mortality?
Hmm.... hmmm... now you got me thinking....

Naw, it's one of the most natural things in our existance. I do not fear death, and imo religion was created because people were scared of death. Umm, I'm an atheist, but if this heaven really does exist then I guess that's cool. Also, reincarnation would be really tight. Just live your life to the fullest, how could you possibly be afraid of death then?

At one point I was terrified of dying, about 1 year ago.
Now, I have reconciled myself with its inevitability. I do believe in an after life, but even if there is not one I do not find myself in depression about it as I was before.
Am I afraid of dying? No.
Do you I want to die? No. So I would likely be quite nervous if my life is in danger.

Yeah, I'm afraid of dying. The only thing after death is decomposition.
I'm more afraid of how I would die than dying. I'd like not to be eaten alive, burned to death, sufacated, have my intestines ripped out, ripped lim from lim, or forced to watch scooby doo while I slowly starved to death.
It really isn't even about the pain, but more about feeling pain even after I know I'm going to die. However, my biggest fear is dying slowly from disease or illness. So much pain over such a long period of time. I'd rather go out in a blaze of glory. Knowing how you want to die is important because it helps you decide how you want to live.

I'm not afraid of death. Part of the reason is that I simply don't think out of it. Most of the time, it's simply out of your hands. Why think about something you have no control of? What's strange is that I'd be willing to swim with sharks or go sky diving just for the experience. Do you guys consider that dancing with death? I'm not sure myself. The latter is probably a lot safer than the former though.

I don't believe that there's anything after death, so if I die, I won't care - I'll be dead. Fearing something I'll have no consciousness of is a difficult thing for me to do. Whether I end up being reborn, as a ghost, in heaven, hell or inbetween (yes, I've no religion due to a very split family religion-wise and having friends of each religion doesn't help much either), I'm fine with it. If you love the unknown, I think it's easier for you to face the idea of death. The main reason why people fear death in the first place is pretty much 'cause they have no idea what the hell is gonna happen afterward.

as far as "other side", no, we are purely physical animals. death is the end of consciousness. think about the degrees of being conscious/intelligent, think about newborns, think about going senile, think about alzheimers, retarded people, and you can clearly see that death is the end of all thinking forever. but on the other hand we are all connected to each other and the universe so in a sense we do go on, just in a different way.

But only humans can be afraid of death, since we are the only species to understand what it is.
Don't mean to sound like some liberal/hippie. But your wrong on that statement. There are plenty of other mammals out there that truely know what death means.
Since they aren't as mentally advanced as we are however they don't dwell on their loss for days, weeks or month like most humans do.
I am generally speaking of other Mammals. Not amphibians, insects or reptiles.
Now... am I afraid of Death? Not being religious or a believer in god and whatnot... Yeah, I'm afraid of Death. Because the only thing I got going for me is Life. The thing I care about the most is living... I feel like shit just thinking about how I am going to leave this world behind... Well, some people strive for knowledge out of plain curiousity. Others want to know simply to be the only ones to know the truth.
There are too many questions in this world and no answers... you'll die before you even get an answer to one, so I can see what your saying. Its almost pointless. But I would like to die knowing this worlds secrets myself... even though it would be kind of pointless in the end... not because theres no one to share it with, but because no one truly knows what happens after death.

You know, I too have come to that conclusion. After thinking about death so many times.
I am not worried about it because I know its something I can't stop. But that doesn't change the fact that dying would really suck. I mean, you think its not that bad, since everyone currently around you or in your generation is going to follow soon.
I think I could live with that if I was certain that we were all going to be reborn or go somewhere after death. But that all just sounds like a fairy tale to me. I can only comprehend what is real to me... and whats real is death. Once your gone there is no coming back, ever. You'll be forced to let go of this life you've lived without even getting to say good bye to everything or everyone you loved.
Its harsh as hell, but its life. I'd rather live eternally and watch my friends slowly pass away and keep them in my memory than for me to die with them and lose it all.
I sound selfish, but anyone of you would probably want to do the same thing if you were given the chance to live longer, or better, forever.

Natural? How do you figure that? It's not like the body is programmed to die at a certain point. If anything, you're programmed to avoid death at all costs. You die as a result of your body unable to keep up with the damage that accumulates over your lifetime. Not exactly natural.

I'm not afraid of dying. It's unavoidable. Fear is just another word for "I don't understand it", but I don't understand a lot of things, such as the purpose of life, how the universe came to be, why I'm so infatuated with astronomy, etc. There's no point in fearing something that everyone has to go through. What happens after it? Who cares? You'll be dead. If you disappear into nothingness and cease to exist, we won't be around to complain about it. Enjoy what life you have and try to savor it for as long as you can, but don't fear death. It's natural and, because it's natural, it's probably necessary.

But that is my goal right now. I want to live my life the way I want to. I want to meet new people and see new places... But I want friends to be there with me, forever. Because I don't want to be forgotten.
Thats why, sometime this summer, or maybe around the beginning of the year. I'm going to hit the road again. I'm saving enough money for an RV and living my life on the road. I know it sounds like a liberal/hippie thing to do. But I don't care. Then when I've already seen all of the US, if I'm still alive I'll probably want to see the rest of the world.
You don't need money to travel after all :P and there are so many things that you miss out on when your on an airplane anyways... What spark this in me was when I was a door to door sales man a few month back. I got to see all of the eastern part of the US in 1 month. The best part about that job was the ride back to the motel... with your friends in the middle of the night, the radio blasted. listening to random music that you would probably never hear at home but it was fun to listen to anyway and sing along with because your friends were there with you...

Many people, soon before they die, are at peace and have no fear of it. You're wrong.
If you're alive the fear of death is wired into you. We have all these mechanisms (eating, sleeping, anxiety etc) to prolong life and stave off death. Not to be rude, If I had a gun and shot the nearest person to you dead center in the head and I point my bloodied gun at you. Your reaction (assuming your not paralyzed with fear) would be geared towards survival.

As for me, there are many moments when I wonder what it'd be like, but I feel like time passes very fast and life is so short as is that I will know soon enough when it is my time. Doesn't mean that I don't get scare perse, it's just that I'm not paranoid about it for myself.

i agree that death is inevitable, but i think that fear of the unknown is what really drives fear of death. death represents finality, nothingness, void for eternity. however like i said earlier our physical particles will still exist in the universe for billions more years most likely so in a sense we "live on".

No. But I'm scared of losing people. I'd rather I die than lose someone I care. Kinda selfish of me. I have no plans of dying, though. Not yet, at least.

how is it selfish to prefer yourself dying than someone you care about? that is the extreme opposite of selfishness...

I wouldn't say I'm "afraid" of death but I'd advise against it.

It's selfish because my reason for choosing so is that I can't stand the pain of losing people. Kinda like, I'd rather that I leave them behind than have them leave me.

I'm not afraid of dying, because I know it'll happen one day. I'm afraid of HOW I'm going to die though.:iik

Used to be, but don't care anymore. o__o I'm afraid of being hurt -- physically, or mentally. Death is just a way of finding out things, of solving life's biggest mysteries, isn't it? Besides, I wouldn't mind seeing my bf again. But I'm not LOOKING for death either; I'm fine with life. But sometimes I wish I could be like that baby in The Grudge - alive, yet dead. ^^ So I could scare the shit out of some people I hate, and see my bf, yet be alive so I can be with my friends and stuff. =D Would be nice.
I don't see why people ought to be afraid of death, as many people before me have said "If it happens it happens". However when I do die I would appreciate it if I pass easily to where ever i'm headed (if i'm going anywhere at all).
As for leaving loved ones behind, what can you do? You shouldn't fret over it. If you can leave a letter behind to say you regret leaving them I should think.
And as for you being left behind when a loved one dies, its painful but you'll live through it, and although you may think about them constantly and it may hurt, but you should remember the good times and you'll survive.

Nope, dosent really bother me even the thought of leaving loved ones behind, because i know that they'd get over it eventually . It happens to everyone no one can avoid it, my one fear in life is stupid because again it will happen to almost everyone, its being forgottten - odd really o_0

I'm not afraid of death, I never have been and I never will be.
It's an inevitable fact of life, and I'm also quite interested to see what lies beyond.
I think the only thing I'm afraid of when it comes to death is being old, and dying a long, drawn out death.
I'd much rather die young-ish, saving someone's life or for some purpose than that.

Only occasionally. I range from absolute fear to suicidal quite regularly.

This is the closest one can come to my own beliefs, really makes you less scared of that last breath :amuse

I'm not afraid of death, it's just a natural part of life. I am afraid that when I die, no one will remember me, but that's natural.

I'm more afraid of living a good life then I am of dying.
Dying is easy, ever does it.
I'm afraid that i'll die without accomplishing anything of significance.
But that's only if you do not strive to do anything of signifigance...
