Well this is a strange battle, and I'm sure not many people will be familiar enough with FFVI to really come up with too many good debates.
But, I'm making it anyway.
Say Emerald Weapon from FFVII, entered the realms of FFVI, and fought the team of your choice. (Non-hacked hero characters only).
Rules:
Vanish + X-zone will not work.
Basic rules of FFVI apply to all characters.
Theoretical battle taking place after the Kefka battle, so any equipment is usable.
No instant killing moves will work on Emerald Weapon.
I think the FFVI guys should be able to take Emerald down, with some crafty fighting.

Emerald doesn't have any all-party insta-killing attacks aside from Airetam storm or sth which won't cause damage if characters aren't equipped with materia. So yes, FF6 wins.

As Kapsi pointed out, no materia = no Aire Tam Storm. He does still have 4000+ multi-hit attacks, but 4 lvl 99 characters would actually make short work of him.
Two healers with high/max magic power, one economizer/Gem(?) Box user with Ultima and high magic power, and one guy with the oh-so-wonderful Atma weapon/offering/whatever that other relic was. Genji Glove?
They could do it in 8 turns or so.
Unless Emerald WEAPON has status attacks that I've forgotten about - FFVI characters could die really fast from those. Even then, the healers could get ribbons. It'd take longer, but it'd still be over.

Maybe Emerald Weapon wasn't as strong as I remember...
Ah well, win some, lose some.

Tera with Genji Glove and Offering would be able to do the damage. Cele's could just absorb anything that is sent out, finally a healer to heal the physical attacks (if any)

Ruby would be harder because of the status attacks and sandstorm thingy I think

Yeah, if Ruby could Sandstorm 3 out of 4 characters, THAT would be hard. You'd have to give up the Genji Glove for a ribbon, and you'd have no healers.

Doesn't Emerald have over 1,000,000 HP? The FFVI characters are screwed, then. The reason I say this is because unless they can beat him in 20 minutes, they are going to drown. So if they would have to hit emerald weapon at least 101 times to kill him. 20 minutes is 1200 seconds, so roughly every 12 seconds they would have to do 9999 damage. Which sounds plausable, but Emerald still hit hard, even at high levels. they would need one character to constantly heal. If they win, it will be a close call.

Hey. No fair taking away Vanish and X zone. How about Vanish and Doom. That one worked almost as well.
Well anyway. FF6 was just so much tougher than 7 meaning that you had to have some really skilled and strong characters to deal with the bosses in that game. I'm sure if someone was skilled enough to defeat Emerald weapon (who was a cake walk compared to ruby weapon), without KotR, then the it wouldn't be too hard to do the same with FF6 characters.

Some combos in the game allow 8x 9999 a turn etc

A. Morph Terra w/ whatever allows double magic
B. Use Quick
C. Doublecast Ultima
D. Repeat the double cast
E. Use an Elixer on Terra.
There's 39996 damage right off the bat. Let's put in Sabin's Bum Rush, some of Gau's Cat-thingy rage, and Gogo's Mimic, and you have a win.
