When you draw anime do you use the basic shapes or do you just draw the character without the shapes. And also do you draw the eyes first or the face first. AND how do you make the eyes evenly and both look the same. Sorry for all those questions its just that am starting to draw manga and I reeeeeeeealy need help.:cry

everyone does things differently
try all and do what works best for u
keep practicing and soon you'll get it
there is no absolute way in drawing manga/anime everyone has their own style

......................Belongs in the fucking art tutorial section.

Try some anatomy books before drawing anime.

Um, nope I don't use shapes, I use to draw faces first, but now I try on eyes, and because I now start on eyes, it's more easy on making them equal. Before and even now, when it comes to proportions and anatomy, I just use common sense and daily preferences [memory]. Or now, Yahoo and Google.

I mesure the body (eye ball it) then mesure the eyes in the face and from thier it takes its own form (what ever it comes out to be)

This ensures (with me) that everything is at least well centerd and properly proprotioned (dont want to end up with big lips, small head combo etc)

wrong place for this thread but oh wellz XD

Using shapes to grasp the proportion of a character is a better method to go by, even if you're not completing the whole shapes (a curved line for how the back will be bent, an oval for the hips, etc). This is important if you want to start sequentialling your characters (for manga or animation).

Drawing eyes evenly and aligned come with lots of practice and knowing where to plot them on the face n__n Quick way: sketch a line across the face where the eyes shoud be, and pot them there. Remember to keep in-curve with the head shape too.

Start sketching people out in the public. It helps when you want to pose you own characters properly and in proportion

a pretty nice figure drawing study to look at (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14035)
head tutorial 1 (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14119)
head tutorial 2 (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14735)

Remember to stay FAR away from recreating images step-by-step from a tutorial. Only use them as a guideline to help your own work, and if you want to learn about a specific technique.

[EDIT] I read your post again: people draw the face first? People draw the EYES first?? wtfbbq!

I just draw without shapes. I think it's too much work to erase and my lines are very dark. I draw the eyes first usually but sometimes the hair and face are drawn first. It's hard to draw the eyes similar to the other so most of my drawings have the characters facing the side. Other times the eyes are just about right.

heheh, my friend is the same, he always sketches very dark n__n

use a col-erase pencil, the blue ones :leepose red works too. Red is used for mostly environment stuff tho.

Or a normal 2H or H pencil will be fine if you really can't sketch lightly

I don't think I know how to explain it. but.. I know this. "If u keep on practicing You will get much better at it" so I know I got better at it ^-^

well i just draw for the heck of it, so i'm not into perfect proportions or anything like that. especially when you do realistic sketches, ppl don't tend to have the exact same skull/arms/legs/hips or anything like that anyways, so i figured, what's the point?
you get a great sense of freedom when you draw without the guidelines and all that other stuff too. things always pan out fine in the end, just don't kill yourself trying to make everything perfect.
and about where to start...i just start where ever i feel like XD
usually i just start with the eyes though.

well, that's the point in practice and proportion. So you can better distort the figure to your needs :leepose

or you can just say that's how it's SUPPOSE to be even if you screwed up.
if you screwed up too badly, that's when you put the blames of weird diseases.

If you want to start off with Naruto, you should try drawing a masked Haku's head. I think I'ts a great way getting used to drawing heads, because the shape for is head can be adjusted to pretty much any face you like.

This is the guide I used:
Click Here. I used the top-left picture. (http://www.narutofan.com/members/fan_art.php?act=view&src=L191cGxvYWQvZmFuYXJ0LzFfODljODA2MDItXy1OZXNzeX MtXy0xMTIzNjYwMzE4LV8tSGFrdS5qcGc=&w=715&h=823) I just left out the needles. I'd scan it, but I don't have a scanner. -__-;;

like using shapes as guidlines
those shapes put together can become the guidline for a person's body
the stick figure method is a stick figure first then building it up with shapes right?
i usually skip the stick figure step because i find it easier adn more practical

So you dont have to do the stick figure then? I'll try with the shapes to see if i'm better. Thanks for the information.:)

no prob
no one says u have to do anything
u can skip steps or add whatever u like
the stick figure screws me up casue i can never build on it

I used to just draw straight on, but found itvery difficult when handling porportions. So I recommend drawing a basic outline (using shapes or whatnot) to get an idea of what pose you're drawing. As for the eyes, just practice and you'll get better.

Some people don't understand why shapes are used. They're used so the artist can get the right shape of the body and so that the artist can understand the limits the body has in terms of flexibility and to keep complete body ratio in check.
