I've just started coloring Naruto but I'm doing very simple base colorings. That is just filling them with one color, without shading. (In my opinion it looks fine, but shading is more unique I know) Can anyone give me tips on shading, as I am clueless where to shade and how to determine where to shade at all. It's the only way I'm going to get better after all, as that's all that's holding me back...
If u can post your colouring here, it will be better.
Well, what I am suggesting is that u have to determine where is the light coming from first. Once u know that the light is coming from (xxx) direction, obviously those facing the light will have to be coloured a bit lighter than the base colour and those not facing the light will have to be coloured a bit darker.
I suggest that u play around with the burn tool. It might help u shade a bit. Besides, pick the colour from the same family group and not too contrasting unless u want to have the contrast feeling. U can also differ the opacity level and play around with the blur tool. Blur tool can help making 2 colours mix a bit more better and u wont be seeing a clear border bwtween the two colour.
U can also check out the blending options. "Darken", "lighten", etc... Try and see what kind of effect will each blending option make to the picture u are trying to colour and pick the one u like the best.
And of course, practice make perfect. The more u practice, the better u will get. Dont give up and keep colouring.
Good luck.

Imagine where the light source is coming from. Whichever place the light can't reach will be in shadow. So the shadow part is the shaded part of the picture. Look at the anime and see how their the shading works or you could do a search on google for shading. They have great tutorial more explainatory than mine.

I think it will be pretty hard to shade that becouse of the pictures lack of quality(the scanning that is) Try to colour some front pages of naruto(take some from inane's releases) they got pretty good quality:)

I wasn't necessarily wanting to color those ones, I was just giving eileenting a basic idea of what I can do so far.

Make sure you label those as spoilers... some people don't want to see the Naruto characters post-timeskip quite yet.
And this is a pretty useless contribution from me, as I also want to learn some shading tips.
I just played around with the colours a bit and come out with this result. Hope u like it and learn something from it. It's just the matter of determining the source of light and give the part that is not shone by light some darker tone.

Very nice, eileen. Did you use the Brush or another tool for the darkening?

I think you coloured it a bit too dark...
I think you coloured it a bit too dark...
I know the whole dark thing. After I finish, I feel that it is a bit too dark too but since I am using seto Fett's picture and duplicate it, it automatically doubles the darkness. I am trying to lighten it as much as possible but I cant do it because I am not colouring the page using a brand new uncoloured page. I am using Seto Fett's product to reshade. So, it will be darker. Of course I like to lighten it as well.
Seto Fett, I only use the basic brush and the blur tool. That's all. As I suggested earlier, u can experiment yourself with the blur tool, burn tool and other things until u like what u have. Keep practising. I believe if u practise hard, u will do well.

Thanks for the assistance eileen. I'll work at it until I get a feel for shading. :amuse
