What's a tone? If it's something really basic, you may call me an idiot.

I dont know the exact meaning for this but maybe I can just describe a bit about it.

Let's say u are colouring something with red colour. Just one colour will make the picture looks dull and not interesting. So we add in some maroon to shade it a bit and we add some lighter opacity of red of lighten some of the parts. That is what I think as tone. It's just a shade of colour where several colours of different opacity from one original colour mix together into a harmonize colouring. It will be something like this : black, grey, white.

What eileenting said is pretty much what tone generally means, but there's another type of tone - it's a pattern sheet that mangakas use to cut and stick to their mangas in order to "tone" them (using eileenting's definition) except greys are the only colours used
