Soccer is the most popular sport because anyone can pick up on it. That's why it's loved in 3rd world countries. All you need is one rock and four cans. They can't play football because you actually need strenght play it it. I mean they probably don't play that many contact sports all over the world due to not being able to afford health services. Football is far more advanced than soccer in terms of strategy and teamwork.

It's a matter of opinion. But soccer owns football. I mean, what's up with that shit.
Invented by americans for americans. No wonder you like it more.

The NFL doesn't have a steroid problem. Besides big musles alone won't make you a good player. Like I said before any body can go out and play soccer. It's very simplistic.

Soccer is not simplistic. Just like most other sports, it has its own stragedies, and honestly, not anyone can go right out there, and play like a pro, just like in football.
Its stupid to state that american football is better than football (soccer), because its an opinion, not a statement, unless everyone in the world said it truely was better.
In my opinion though, I think american football sucks

You may be right, but I just can't get into the game! They try showing it on ESPN sometimes and I try to sit there and watch it, but it's soo friggin' boring! First the ball goes over there, then the ball goes back over here, then the goalie gets ahold of it and sends the ball back over there! When I finally woke up the final score was 1-0. :sad
Another reason I don't like soccer is because everytime another player touches another player, they flop on the ground like the guy just tried to tackle him. I'm like, the guy barely touched you, this happens the entire game. :S

in your opinion, and as stated eslewhere in this thread soccer is the world's most popular sport, that shows your opinion's worth.
"1.It appeals to collectivism. Most of the world has collectivist governments, and many people throughout the world seek to group themselves based on nationality and race. Hence, once the "World" Cup comes around, jackbooted fans seek to wrap themselves around the flag. Thus, we see soccer's popularity in collectivist Europe and unpopular in North America. Soccer is the world's most popular "sport?" First, soccer is not a sport, it is an activity. Second, who cares? Twenty years ago, communism was the most popular form of government. The Nazis received a plurality of the vote in 1933. And they all were wrong. Is the rationale for being a soccer fan due to what some other idiot opines?"

well, it's not like you could come up with a thought like that, so why use it?
I played both sports at school, I must say though I had more fun playing soccer, Football was so damn boring to play, it sucked, i was a receiver, made a couple of touchdowns but damn it was boring, in soccer I was much more active, I scored a load of goals hence soccer owns fooball(why football shouldn't it be called handball???: w/e) any day of the week. Soccer is much more fun, football is cool but it doesn't compare to soccer.

well, it's not like you could come up with a thought like that, so why use it?
Why did I use it? Cause it spoke truth. I mean it aint that hard to argue that just because something is popular doesn't make it better. I did give reasons why non of them being because it's a better sport. If we go off popularity that would make 50 Cent the best musical artist out right now.
First off, "footbal"l really cant compete agaisnt soccer, because Soccer is the #1 sport in the world. Why it isnt so popualr in US, well because they ain't that good. Dammit their "football" leauge sucks (my bad folks, but the truth has to come out one day or another) as well, anyway about the whole black thing..? WTF? Eto' is a great player. We got more, just look at france, holland, UK, yes even black ppl in south america are great, african ppl came to south america as slaves as well...so if jordan is black then so are robinho and ronaldinho and YES PELE!!!
anyway, soccer eats football as desert for breakfast.
I really never say football, its called American Football...and soccer is called Football.

So explain to me why when the kids grow up the move to better sports? These soccer moms sign up their children so they can play in a sport where there isn't that great of a chance to be hurt.

I agree, there's alot more scoring in American football and at a faster pace, but like genious captain stated, it's probably more fun to play soccer. You're always on the move and the ball can get to you in a hurry, so you feel more into the game.
Although, it depends what position you play in American football, I played both ways at running back and linebacker, so I never got bored. :amuse

Simplicity of Futbol (Soccer) makes it so beautiful. You could play a game of Futbol anywhere on land.
In any park. In the street. On the road.
All you need is a ball and a group of people, and right away you can play.
A true sport that brings people together and is really competitive.
There is a lot of contact in Futbol and like most team sports it relies highly on teamwork.
It requires a lot of skill (moving with a ball at your feet).
It is a solid game that's not all about scoring goals.
In Futbol, you can play in any position and be happy. Because every position is vital.
Why do you think Futbol is a worldwide sport.
Shit someone just signed on with the screenname "i wanna play football*" (* English Football, which you call Soccer! Beat that!).

Soccer's simplicity is its greatest asset... the main problem with American football is that it's basic rules are so complex that matches have no flow whatsoever. It's constant stop-start-stop-start, making it impossible to get into and enjoy. :)
(The complexity doesn't mean any more skill is involved, either.)

Gloves are usually worn to give better grip to catch balls. There are times when they do wear gloves due to coldness. The ball also becomes very hard when it's cold.

Actually, In the last World Cup I was impressed by the American football team (proper football, not rugby with body armour). They weren't great, sure, but they were pretty good and played a very dynamic, entertaining game. Pretty much all white, though. If African Americans played football, the US would be a world contender, which would rock, since there are too few of those nowadays.

Playing these sports are all fun. But when it comes to actually watching these sports is where theres a difference. Soccer just doesn't have enough scoring or contact to be a legimate sport to watch. Look at the NHL for example. They knew they needed to increase scoring to boost ratings, and hell, they score about twice as much as soccer already in a smaller time frame. Hockey and American Football are the best sports to watch because of high contact, balanced scoring, and speed (stoppages allow football players to sprint full out every play and hockey is even faster). Hockey has the edge in speed, but its still not better than american football, and heres why. American football rivals basketball in its ability to make dramatic come from behind finishes. Its hard to come back in hockey or soccer and even baseball. The fact that you can score more than 1 point at a time makes Basketball and American Football more exciting for sure.

advanced...well, all i can say to that is football has a lot of tactics, that are thought up by coaches who are mostly white, every instruction is passed onto black players because they need it, soccer is about creativity. Football players on the other hand don't have such thoughts and can only operate like robots, eat and run at other people, that is why black people are so good at football they don't have to think

I think football is called as such since parents wouldn't sign their kids up to play collisionball.

They do. But that's the kicker. Those guys are boring, just like soccer.
Playing these sports are all fun. But when it comes to actually watching these sports is where theres a difference. Soccer just doesn't have enough scoring or contact to be a legimate sport to watch. Conversly, I'd like to argue that the high scoring rate in American football makes for repetive watching. Start, crash, clutch ball, fall down, repeat. Every once in a while you get those wonderful runs and tackles, but on the whole I find it rather boring. Same as handball.
The value of a goal in football (or soccer, if you insist), on the other hand, is higher than in any other sport I know of. The simplicity of the rules also makes for great room for improvisation and innovation on the part of the players (the brazillian who spontanously invented the bicicleta kick is said to have had the goal keeper he scored on clapping and laughing). First and foremost, the value of a goal makes almost any football match dangerous. A great team can lose to a bad one on account of one brilliant moment from a sole player.

Maybe soccer would be interesting if they had sticks and beat each other, like in hockey. Soccer is pretty fun to play, but to watch it...:faint
P.S. I don't even like hockey, but watching it isn't too bad.
It doesn't matter what you guys think
speed, lead changes/scoring, and contact are what makes sports fun to watch. and guess what, you get creamed in all 3
By that logic, Shufflepuck is the best sport ever.

Goals in soccer are valuable because when you have the lead its easier to retain it, by just playing d. Conversely, this is the total opposite in basketball and american football because if you play just for defense, the other team has a high opportunity to score. This is the main reason why Hockey, despite being superior in every other facet is still inferior to american football.

advanced...well, all i can say to that is football has a lot of tactics, that are thought up by coaches who are mostly white, every instruction is passed onto black players because they need it, soccer is about creativity. Football players on the other hand don't have such thoughts and can only operate like robots, eat and run at other people, that is why black people are so good at football they don't have to think
NOW REALLY, WTF??? What exactly do you mean with all that, AHA lemme guess...youre a lazio fan? Is soccer a none-black-sport? :blink

Excactly, but this also leads to fact that in football, the underdogs often win. Underdogs winning = drama. Drama = fun. Single players who in a flash of inspiration turns a game around in 15 seconds, that's what sports is all about.

The american football equivalent to that is called the turnover. Turnovers are far more important that any other statistic in football to win a game. Turnovers are usually caused by a gross error thats capitalized on by the opposing team. Thus, a bad team can beat a good one if the good one makes a few mistakes. There hasnt been an undefeated team in the NFL in 30+ years and they only play 14(30 years ago) to a max total of 19 games a season.

you probably have never played soccer. its not as easy to DEFEND all the time as your theory makes it to be. Soccer players run constantly, they pass the ball so many times, football players run for a short period of time. Football games can be won or lost because of 2players. In soccer, one player can not take the ball from one side to the other side and score a goal on his own. Soccer needs more teamwork, its a team game. Soccer players need to be more in shape too, have you ever seen a fat soccer player? shit the dudes run up and down nonstop for 90min.

You are retarded, sir.
Joe Montana's 9ers were one of the greatest teams of all time. Most of their great players? RB, WR (Jerry Rice), CB (Merton Hanks), O-line, etc--just about all of them were black. Without that core of players Montana would have been cracked more often than Steve Young--who was a better quarterback than Montana.
Not that white players are necessarily better than blacks or vice versa (even though black players are usually better), but Joe Montana was spoiled rotten. Put Montana on the Broncos, back before Elway had a great team (yet still went to Superbowls). What would you get? A lot of losses. Put Elway on the 9ers from their Montana years. What would you get? Even more Superbowl rings.

I know. Obviously you are thinking too hard, or else you would have gotten the joke. It's just like one of those Magic Eye pictures--relax and remove your head from your rectum.
And besides, like I said before, you forgot to take weight training into account. Sure, most football players would be worn out if they had to play a soccer game against professionals, but soccer players wouldn't be able to compete in a game of football, either. And while the aerobic capacity of your average soccer player is greater than that of your average football player, the average strength and power (yes, these are quantifiable) of your average football player is much greater than that of your average soccer player.
its an impossible point to argue
No, it's not an impossible point to argue. It's possible to argue about just about anything.
You didn't argue an undeniable point--you claimed that the most cardio intensive sport, or rather, as you put it, the sport where the players are in the best shape, is obviously the most demanding sport.
Valuing one atheltic ability above all others is ridiculous, since different abilities are required of athletes who play different sports. Football players are in better shape for football. Soccer players are in better shape for soccer.

I'd agree that soccer is a cool sport, and it IS the most popular sport in the world...but it's because it'sa game of a more simplistic nature. It's easier for more people to understand it. i have played both sports...stratedgy in American football is many, many times deeper than in soccer. American football actually plays more like a game of chess than anything else (well, a game of chess with a bunch of guys knocking the piss out of each other).

I'm honestly amazed on how this thread is still running with all of the rants. Honestly, its all opinionated. Soccer (football) is loved by many, and American football is loved by many, even in other countries. They are both sports, and they are both entertaining to many. Thus, simply saying one is crap and the other is great is just showing what side your own.
The bottom line is, both of them have fouls, so lets call it an even match.

Yes football has way more strategy. That's why coaches have spend over 18 hour work days just studying tape of their next opponent to see what they can exploit. Coaches can even fake their intentions as well.(Stack alot in the box so the QB reads run then drop them when the ball is snapped) In football you actually have plays you have to perform. If you're out of place and it is noticed then you're done for. You must have never watched football if you believe there is no strategy. Stuff a regular fat guy in the Oline and watch him give up a sack on every play.

Soccer players are more technical at what they do. It requires a lot of coordination to be a soccer player than a football player. In football you only use your hands to catch the ball, in soccer you use everything else except your hands.
What soccer players can do with a ball, football players havent even dreamed about.

I definitly think that guys like Owen could outrun any NFL players on short distances. Remember that they don't just grab the ball and run, they have to costantly kick it forward, it slows the movement like hell and yet they still can run with a ball fast as hell.
And yes...American fotball requires more strategy....from a coach. THe players in American Football hardly ever have to think, majority of thinking is done by coach, they just follow orders. In football the strategical input of coach is much smaller, but players have to think far more than in American football

It's no contest. If anyone tries to tell me soccer is more strategic than football they need to be shot. Football is a chess game and soccer is checkers. Real talk.
Bollocks.
All 4 players i mentioned in the speed department can do the 100 meters in the real low 11 second and some high/mid 10. Find me one American football player with that sort of speed.
People like Vinnie Jones as i said can dish and take more damage than any American footballer can hope to ever do. I have watched both American football and i have watched both European and South Amrican football intensively. I know this.
And about tactics. Feel free to shoot me then.
Cause there is easily more tactical work involved in Football.
Like i said, u dont have to agree with me. But dont try to bullshit me.
American footballers faster, hah!

If anyone tries to tell me soccer guys are tougher than NFL players then please kill yourself. You can argue for rugby but not for soccer. Guys get pinched and act like a truck hit them. Football players run a 40 yard dash. If someone wants to try and convert times from 40 yard dashed to 100 meters then go right ahead.
Edit: Even the best coaches lose if their players don't execute. Also in football you can change the play if you notice anything strange. Watch a Colts game Peyton Manning always changes plays without the assistance of a coach.

I totally disagree, just because a coach calls the plays, doesn't mean you don't think. :S As a running back I always had to think ahead, sometimes I noticed the defense overpursuing and I would run a cut back, sometimes there's a hole, but the O-linemans feet is pointed towards the opponent so I know that hole won't stay open, because the O-lineman wants me to run towards the outside.
The defensive side of the ball is even more complicated, sure the coach sends in the play, but it's up to you to adjust to the offense. Just because the coach calls for a zone D, doesn't mean you stay in a zone. You've got to go with your instincts, if he hands the ball off to the running back, then you break out of your zone and try to make the tackle, but then again you have to watch out for the playaction.
Now don't even get me started on the QB, the QB in my school had to memorize a thick ass book of plays and that's just in high school! I'd hate to see what the NFL QB's have to memorize. Peyton Manning calls his own plays, so he's basically the coach and the QB.
My point is, every position takes skill and strategy, whether you're an O-lineman or a corner. Coaches can call plays, but it's up to you to make it happen. :amuse

Football players are geared up from head to toe so ofcourse they can endure more hits. You tackle a soccer player and hit him on the knee, ofcourse he will fall down and moan about it. Have you ever gotten hit on the knee with those soccer shoes? It hurts dude.

I've never played American football, but I do play actual football (soccer, if you insist) from time to time and it's alot of fun. Why couldnt whoever it was that invented American football just have came up with a new name for it anyway?
Anyway, I'm not sure why theres a an arguement about toughness going on, since football is a non contact sport so it doesnt matter if you're hard or not. It's more about how fast you can control the ball.
I do with football players would stop pretending every single contact broke their legs though, it's totally unsportsmanlike and ruins the flow of things. Bunch of cheating bastards...
You want to compare hard people's sports, compare American football to rugby - eg American football with no padding. Now thats a hard person's sport

"All 4 players i mentioned in the speed department can do the 100 meters in the real low 11 second and some high/mid 10."
Kids at my old high school could run that fast for the hundred meters. The national record for high school in america is 10.08 seconds.
"Rossum captained the school’s track squad all four years. He posted the fastest time in the nation in the 100 meters (10.02 seconds, apparently wind aided) in 1993.
"
Allen Rossum plays defensive back for the atlanta falcons and was last years fastest NFL player. In conclusion, our high schoolers are faster than your best soccer players.
"Why couldnt whoever it was that invented American football just have came up with a new name for it anyway?"
We don't have that problem, we call your sport soccer and ours football.

Check the world record at 100m, you would want to name those in your school since they should be participating in Olympics (JR); http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Record_progression_100_m_men
These 2 sports are 2 entirely different sports;
Non-contact / Contact sport
hands strictly forbidden / hands used
In football you dont need to be fast, of course you have to have some speed but since you carry the ball on your feets the speed doesnt really matter, what matters is technique, strenght and a good and fast working brain.

Best way to determine this is for people who have extensively played both to give impressions and experiences. Otherwise, you really don't have a foot to stand on.
Here's a breakdown of the too.
Soccer is a more physically demanding sport. No ifs, ands, or buts. You have to be in better shape to play soccer well than football.
Football is a more physical sport. Anyone who argues otherwise...come on, guys. Think about that for just a few seconds. In soccer, excessive contact is avoided, and even penalized. Contact is what the entire game of football is about.
Soccer is an easier, more open sport to learn. Actually, it's a more open sport, period. All you need to play soccer is a ball. Football, on the other hand, requires about a $1000 worth of pads to play properly (at least at the NFL level it does).
Soccer is faster paced, simpler game. No bones about it. Think checkers.
Football is a stop-and-start game, slow, then blazing for an instant, then stopped again. This is why the same kind of stamina isn't required for a football player that it is a soccer player. Football, however, is a much more intricately complex game than soccer is. The actual game itself plays like a violent chess match.
Average soccer player is significantly faster than average football player. Once again, no sound arguement otherwise here.
Average football player is significanlty stronger than average soccer player. When you have offensive lineman benchpressing 470 lbs and squatting over a 1000, no one in soccer competes with that.
That's about my summary. It comes from experience...I played soccer for 4 years and football for eight. In the end, I prefer US Football. Why? I like chess better than checkers.

look ASSmodeus. at the end of your summary you concluded that football is like chess and soccer like checkers. That is not an adequet comparison, both are far more compex then chess and i feel that your conclusion does neither sport justice. I feel soccer can be very tactical at the highest level anyway, the co-ordination of 10 men is not an easy task, tactics of a team without the most talented players can make them champions, so there is a value to tactics in soccer. The reason why soccer is easier to play is that there are many forms of the game, you can't get 22 players all the time you can play with any number of players and still have a level of fun. But the professional level is far more advanced then your average kick around but at least you can improve your skills without the need of a load of players. Football is to ridgid, you need a lot of people, you need equipment and you need someone to boss you around, being told what to do for every little thing is a passionless sport. In soccer when the going gets tough the coach may have a few ideas but it is down to you on the pitch to do something about it. That is what makes a great player, the guy who steps up because if he didn't no one else would. Football players can't make such claim, you can take your apparent tactics and stick them because i may not have tactics but i have passion.

If you like speed and fewer stoppages why not watch Hockey?
Heres the thing, what should have been addressed first is, what makes a good sport? Are we talking about playing it or watching it?
With that being said, I don't think a person's physical strength, speed or endurance adds any entertainment value to a sport. We see players in every sport overcome obstacles (height, weight, strength, speed, etc) and become great players and they actually are better in our eyes BECAUSE of those physical deficiencies. (Think Rudy)
As far as watching a game goes, theres 4 things that I think are key.
Contact
Game Speed
Scoring
Comebacks
I like sports such as lacrosse and rugby, and they do well under this ranking system, but unfortunately, they aren't shown or played much at all in the US.

You don't think football has passion? Read the top of my post. Unless you've played both, you have no foot to stand on. Really, if you don't have a large amount of exposure to each sport, you really have no idea what you are talking about.
And about chess and checkers...checkers is older...what does that have to do with anything? Just curious, lol.
Also, Adam III, you think they're BOTH more complex than chess? O.o. Are you serious? You're either not an avid chess player or you're an idiot, it's definately one of the two, because otherwise no one in their right mind would make that statement. Once again, if you don't have a lot of exposure or experience....

Take for example, a corner kick. A set play where most of the players are involved. Think of all the tactics that go along with that corner kick. But now imagine that both teams have the opportunity to score off that corner kick. That's what every play in the NFL is like.

I don't know about that, all I see the players do is use their feet to run away as they hold the stupidly shaped ball in their hands. The real football is actually soccer because they use their alot more in this sport than our so-called Football in the U.S. Hell if you wanted to avoid being ran over by a legion of enemies from the opposing team all you need to do is line up so C4 across the field and blow the other team away. Either that or fly! lol
And if you're talking about strength, it takes just as much strength to be able to run across the field as you worry about the other players taking the ball from you or hurting you in some way to get the same result. Don't think that unlike our U.S football, Soccer doesn't run on a gameplan. Of course it can! The players who can keep up with the game and at the same time formulate a strategy to win the game would consider the player skilled.

American Football is mostly popular in the US. they have rugby in the UK and other countries, but that is WITHOUT protection (so AF is for pussies). Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in the world today, and there's actually more national teams who are members of FIFA than there are countries in the world. Football has created wars and ended wars, and football players are some of the best payed athletes in the world.

If you're saying it takes the same amount of strenght to play both games then you're kidding yourself. One is a contact sport and the other is Euro's running around in short shorts.
People always bring up Rugby to discredit Football. I mean when Rugby players try out for the NFL they can only be punters/kickers(the pussiest position on the field). If your players are so tough why are they reduced to pussy positions? They aren't used to players coming that fast at you that's why. You can call wearing pads pussy all you want but I bet you wouldn't be able to get up right away if you were hit by one of the faster defensive players.

I guess you play rugby, football and soccer ??:huh
To answer your question soccer is better than football. First thing is that the game doesn't stop every 30 seconds. Second you don't have a defense and offense team, its just 1team with soccer so you gotta have attacking skills and defense skills.
3rd The ball is round with soccer, not a ridiculous shaped ball where some huge american sat on.......
And another thing about rugby players, most of them are rougher than those big american line-backers. Who cant even run 200meters in full speed.
And a rugby game is more fun to watch and play.

If one of your reasons is the shape of the ball then you can't be taken serious. I mean I could say it looks like soccer players kicking around dalmations. I think on a whole that soccer players are in better shape (not stronger but healthier overall) and I just like it more. Both sports have their flaws.

I did, I think I won though but i can't remember anything for like 2 days after i saw his fist comming at me at high speed.
But on topic i'm not gonna get into a slagging match but i do Prefer Real football over american football mostly for its free flowing action and little stoppages which with American Football its one play and stop. Now somepeople may prefer that its upto them.
Although i do think that American football is rugby for wimps cause i watch all 3 of them (Rugby being divided into 2 sports of League and Union). The tackles especially in Rugby Union are alot harder than you find in american football and things like scrums and rucks (when someone gets tackled upto 10 players on both sides can literally stand ontop of the poor guy to get the ball on their side) can be extremely dangerous and yet no one in rugby wears body armour at all and only a couple wear head protection (yet no where near like the helmets in American football).
Oh about that soccer sucks site i would like to give an answer to one of their things they say suck about it to anyone here that may be confused.
Actually WRONG. The World cup actually officially starts with the Qualifyers where every Nation in the world (including one island nations in the pacific) participate in to get to the FINALS so every team from the start have started in the comp to win the trophy
and another question on why rugby is called rugby. It is because it was started in a town called rugby after some kid playing real football got fed up with the ball being flat ran it over the goal line in protest.
And without Real Football there would be no Rugby and with no rugby there would be NO AMERICAN FOOTBALL. FACT!!!
Ameen.. American football is for pussies :laugh

Yup Football > American Football in my opinion. It's really just a matter of opinion, but one might say that its a fact considering how it is the worlds game. And if you think Football doesn't involve much contact well go try playing in the Italian Seria A :).
so watch abunch of grass faries fake dives left and right hoping to get a call for the opponent, yeah sounds fun.

Football (sorry but i'm not calling it soccer) is much better than american football.
Why?
they call it football....yet they kick the ball like...what? 10 times? they run with the ball.
american football is just like brawling or boxing... the only difference between them is that u carry a ball around as u're punching people....OH and that u've got more people to punch and played in a larger arena

American football's name is derived from its combination of soccer football and rugby. Boxing is a complex sport. American football is the chess of all sports, with complex strategies and great players. Football (soccer) is a great sport in itself (arguably the reigning king of sports right now), and I expect to see the Americans win a world cup within the next twenty years.
What's most promising about US Soccer is how some players are choosing soccer over football because they simply like the sport more, and their physical gifts that would do them well in basketball or A. football can help them equally much in soccer.

more like in the next 1000 years if civilazation is still around.:amuse
Since I played both sports, and was on school/competitive teams for both sports, I would have to say that I enjoy playing them equally. There's more freedom and a sense of individuality when playing soccer, but I get much more of a team spirit when playing American football.
In terms of watching a game though, I prefer watching football.
In terms of which is the better sport, I like both equally.

Yeah, I like both as well. I just think football is a hell of a lot better than american football (i refuse to call it soccer, sorry but thats how the majority of the world knows it so why should the US be different?) Its quite hard to compare them directly though, as they are very different sports to play, having played both of them. american football is mostly about physical strength/speed and agility, plus catching/throwing the ball if your a QB or WR. Football is about skill and control usually, speed can be useful as can strength, but you can be the slowest, weakest person out there and be a god at football. (zico for example, from the brazil 1982 squad. not very quick, very small and weak, but one of the most skillful players ever.
phew, that was starting to sound like a rant. oh well, feel free to argue my points. (if you don't agree with me though, you're wrong. ha ha ha) ;)

Well it is the most popular sport in the world, that above statement is very debaitable, more than likely more americans warch it but remember the rest of the world outside your borders :)
Do you honestly think more people in a year watch the American football than rest of the world football, i mean they have weekly matchs in stadiums that hold like 50k+ people. Not to mention TV.
soccer is way more fun to play, i never see football because i don't know shit about it but americans seem to have more fun watching it, though i did play football and it wasn't fun to any of my friends or me.

Honestly, to play, I would enjoy Soccer a helluvalot more, its a lot faster and more energetic. It seems to play American foot ball all you need to do is run in small bursts then rest for thirty seconds. Thats just lazy, playing midfield in soccer is awesome.
To watch, I'd rather watch American Football, as it is slightly entertaining to watch, soccer is FUCKING BORING! Like watching Ping Pong on a larger scale.
But honestly, Rugby > All. In terms of playing and watching. It is played at a much faster pace, you actually have to be FIT to play it (unlike American Football) and its very physical. The tackles you have in American Football, are nothing compared to a Brian Lima special (Or Jerry Colins, or De Vet Barrie, or Tana Umaga, or Lots of people that hit fucking hard)

Lol... I can see where you're coming from since some matches are crap.
There are some games that just absolutely need 90 minutes of your attention. I think the more important Champions' League games deserves full attention though, but the entertainment that'll come from future games is a little unpredictible. The games will be too intense and have all sorts of effects on the players.
But yea... I sleep through some games :P
Yesterday's game between Lyon and AC Milan was something else though... It was amazing. Luckily I caught it all.

Last weekend I watched the Auckland Blues play the Bulls (From Pretoria in South Africa, I think.). Awesome game of Rugby. That required my attention. Watching 11 men pass a ball inbetween eachother, occasionally loosing it to the other team so they can pass it inbetween eachother constantly, and maybe 3 times in that 90 minutes of passing the ball around, they score... yeah, I think you get my point.
What I like about Rugby is, ACTION, ACTION and more ACTION! It is constant.

Agree with you there Ronin, the funny thing is i watch a mate play rugby every sat afternoon, theres often a few punchups and such. I go home and watch it and they are also having punchups on the TV too. Just makes me laugh thinking about what would happen if that happened in football.

Mukuro
04-05-2006, 08:04 AM
It's very rare to see fights on the pitch... Those who get involved in punch ups in a match of football tend to be the weaker minded.
In the crowds you've got fans, clearly there are punch ups/rumbles in the stands, possibly every single match.
But I understand where you guys coming from about the entertainment in rugby. It seems to me like the players never stop running. In football, some players tend to have extended breaks. Especially centre forwards.

I also love the way in Football, if the player gets fouled they roll around on the floor crying untill the ref gives the other player a card. In Rugby if a player has blood pissing out the top of there head, they yell at the ref if he orders them off the pitch injured

Erm. Firstly, I would like to state that my favourite sport of all time is soccer. Some people say they dont like soccer because it isnt manly enough or its a sport for pu**ies and by some people i mean americans(and the occasional canadian but its alright because they are retarded so they dont count).
Soccer can be played by many people but the thing is that it can only be played very well by a few. Not like basketball where practically everyone is great. In football you can play decently if you dont know how to play but if you want to play really well you have to be extremely talented as it requires alot of ball control, accuracy, agility, speed. Its like basketball but with your feet. Its much harder than basketball because you do things with your hands in basketball which are much easier than doing with your feet. Next point, soccer is indeed a rough sport. If you dont think so then play some soccer with some real people and you wont be able to move the next day. Why do you think there are always injuries. Practically every 2 matches someone gets injured, be it a broken leg, knee, foot, toe, shin, torn muscles, puncture wounds, its all happened in soccer and keeps on happening. The only pads they wear are shin guards and they dont need to be huge to be eligible to play (as in american football).
Actually why is it called american football, didnt a fcking canadian invent the damn sport?
also, i would like to say that both football and soccer require alot of teamwork but unlike in pansy football, where they stop the play every 3 seconds and the coach draws up plays for the bonehead retards that are outthere playing, in soccer almost all the plays are improvised and it requires that the players understand each other on the field and play well as a team.

That was rivaldo during the 2002 world cup that pissed me off aswell. Generally south american players tend to dive alot, and argentinian coach boasted like 2 months ago that he is teaching them diving tactics. Its an annoying part of the game that they try to contain as much as possible, for the most part i think the refs do a good job. And if they happen to miss it like the rivaldo one the player will still get penalized after the game. I think he got a match ban and a hefty fine, something like 50,000$.
I guess he would think twice before doing that again.

That's only weak ass european and south american footy players. Anyone ever see England v Sweden in the early 1990s. Terry Butcher crunches into this guy with his head, and blood starts pouring out, but he just slaps a bandage round his head and carries on for the rest of the match. About 5 minutes after he comes back on the bandage is bright red, blood is all over his shirt and pretty much every swedish players shirt as well. Now that's a proper footballer!

The name football annoys me. Possibly even more than people replacing "have" with "of" in english sentences. Clearly, the football/soccer names got swapped by mistake. Surely the one sport that involves your feet should have "foot" in the name, while soccer... Let's just let the americans take that name for their game of running and tackling.
