This is a classic in shounen manga. If you have a protagonist then you have his opposite. Both generally remains as equals nearly the whole series until the protagonist take the advantage by little. But in some mangas rivals remains more powerful under "normal circumstances" (alias without plot no jutsu) So to make the things "even" remove plot no jutsu from this battle (for example Kenshin fighting for Tomoe's smile or to protect his friends) and leave pure skill and power. Who will win?

P.S: I will not include Goku and Vegeta or Alucard and Anderson because they would unbalance the battle too much

:sad sigh....this thread seemed a good idea....then the Death Note is prohibited in this battle from now....Raito vs L in a fist fight.

I'd give to team protagonists. Very few team players on the rival's side.

hmm you sure all those are the rivals?I would consider Trains rival Sven not Creed, and Kuwabara is definitely Yusuke's rival even if he is way weaker.

Well...to me Sven is more like a friend than a rival (like Goku and Krinlin)....In Yu Yu Hakusho Kuwabara and Hiei could be considered Yusuke's rival.

Raito has a book given to him by a shinigami (a god of death). He only needs know your face and your name.....then he only needs write your name in the book and he can kill you like he wants. (there are some restrictions...but i can't imagine a restriction of the Death Note that could affect its fuction in this battle) He can even control the last actions of the people who are destined to die by his book.

[Fight] Sakuragi is stronger than Rukawa...

My money's on the rivals. Because you eliminated the plot jutsu.

uh?..all the rivals are secondary characters. Some of them are really important (like Sasuke in Naruto...but still they aren't protagonists)....the only one exception should be Jin....but Mugen still seems "more protagonist" than him.

The rivals 'cause they have Killua. Isn't he stronger than Gon? He was last time I read HXH. And Sasuke would probably beat Naruto again and Ashrum would destroy Parn. Then again, the heroes have Yusuke. :huh

Anyway, There's a few missing like Seiya/Ikki (But they'd likely unbalance the battle, too), Yoh/Ren, Kyo/Kyoshiro and Ken/Ryu.

Also, there's the fact that if Kenshin didn't handicap himself by using the reverse blade he would've decapitated him.

Well naturally in most all manga, the rival starts out stronger but in due time the protagonist surpasses the rival due to shounen cliche. Of course there are exceptions ie. Sasuke, Ryoga, Zoro(who isn't a rival of Luffy's at all), etc.

So I'd say Protagonists would win.

Well I dont know some of the characters posted here but from the ones I know, the Protagonist wins for me. The only Rival characters that I know that are still stronger than the Protagonist are Killua from HxH and Griffiths from Berserk. Everything else favors the Protagonist.

Well Gutts was stronger than Griffith but only insn't because Griffith became Femto and actually now that he has the armor, Gutts may be stronger. So I'd say that this would refer to Griffith pre-godhand.

Well, I was talking about Griffiths post-godhand, the current Griffiths. He just seems unbeatable right now with all that aura surrounding him and the "arrows missing" feat without even moving and even gaining the respect of some of the most feared warriors in the Berserk World like Zodd, Grunbeld and Locus.

I dont think Gatts even with the Berserker armor can beat him(well, atleast not right now).

team protagonist wins because of teamwork... a lot of the people from team rival don't like with their teammates, so all team protagonist has to do is pick em off one by one.
