Spelling is very noteoreous, noterious, notireous notorious.
There are certain groups of people who are spelling purists (most professors in college, what do ya expect?) and there are some who espouse the de-standardization of spelling like George Bernard Shaw (the spelling revolution).

Here is a thread that lets us post words which oftentimes evade correct combination of letters. Also, if you have a "WTF attitude" towards spelling, post you own alternative spelling for your favorite words.:P

Ex:
Commonly misspelled:

Definatley, Definetly -> Definitely

Alternative spelling:

Ghoti -> Fish (gh is for F as in lauGH, o is for I as in wOmen pronounced as wImen, ti is for SH as in naTIon.)

I strive for correct spelling, but I don't mind misspelling whatsoever. As long as I can read it, or laugh at it, then it's okay in my book. This subject has been touched upon before though.

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

I am of the philosophy that as long as you understand it, little spelling errors aren't that big of a deal in anything except formalized text.

I've read that from a text message. yeah, but i guess we cannot read it either if we had not learned in the first place correct sfeleng. lol. I also don't mind minor spelling errors. Haha. But my professors in ____ University are very fussy about spelling. They see it as one of the touchstones for intelligence.

That's only true because you have a certain word picture in your head.

You've learned that "Aoccdrning" is spelled as "According". You have a picture of the spelling in your head.

Now, when you see "Aoccdrnig", your brain doesn't know the word and searches for the picture that looks most like it. Thus, you read "According"

Dyslexic people will not be able to read that, or will have great trouble doing so.
