I don't know if any of you noticed this, but Ganju seems to have a Zanpaktou. He used it in his first fight with Ichigo. It looks kinda like a meat cleaver but has the same color schema as a Zanpaktou.

In addition, despite facing Ichigo's Shikai, it didn't cleave apart like Ichigo's did against Uruhara.

So I guess the questions are:
Is it really a Zanpaktou?
If so, how did he get it? Did he get it from Kaien after he died?
Is it in Shikai form? Or is he just really strong that it doesnt come apart when fighting Shikai(although he didnt try to use it against Yumichika, but I guess he was scared)

I think he's the only non shinigami to weild one. Heck, even Shinigami themselves don't always carry theirs.

He hates shinigami yet he carries their weapon. One must wonder about that. Forget Kenpachi having Shikai, what about GANJU!?!?!

So, any thoughts? I don't think its been explained yet, but if it has correct me. I just wanted people's ideas, not necessarily something explicitly revealed.

Yes, Ganju is the man.

I believe this was discussed in the past here in the anime section. I can't find the thread now, but I am sure it was.

I believe that pretty much everyone in the end ruled Ganju's sword out as a soul cutter, mostly because of it's hilt. It looks more like an arabic sword than a japanese sword.

And not putting Zaraki aside... Zaraki broke Ichigo's Shikai with his unreleased soul cutter, simply because of his high spiritual pressure. Might just be the same thing with Ganju. :)

Nope, I did a search, I found a link to it on google and I didn't have permission so I think it must be in the manga section.

Also I took a peek at the picture posted in there using google's cache and it looks like a Zanpaktou to me, it has the same Gray and Black Color Schema most shikai blades have(Namely Jroubou's, Yumichika, Ikkaku, and Ichigo's).

It can cut death gods so its probably a zanpakutou in some weird way.....

I don't think something has to be a zanpakutou to cut a death god, it just has to have a spiritual presence, thats why hollows are able to cut death gods, their bodies have a spiritual presence. Theoretically if your reiatsu was high enough you should be able to cut a shinigami with your fingernails.

Kukakuu also has one. They were part of the four noble houses it only makes since that they would be able to make(or however they forge them) a zanpakutou.

Forge them? I thought they came from within...like Ichigo's.

Acadmy Students are given Nameless swords that can still harm souls when they get so far in the acadmy, its what you see them fighting with in the flashbacks. Also if you rember when Uhara whas fighting Ichigo, Uhara said Ichigo was thinking that Uhara couldn't hurt him if what he was weilding wasn't a Zanpaktou. Uhara told him he had a Zanpaktou and so he could hurt Ichigo.

I never thought about it being a zanpaktou but I don't see why not as there doesn't seem to be enough evidence either way.

Ok, so My new 2 questions are(and can be answered completely speculatively):

Can he perform Shikai on it?

AND

if so, Who will attain Shikai first, Ganju or Kenpachi? Kenpachi is actually a captain while Ganju seems to be more in tuned with his spirit power(kidous and whatnot).

Kenpachi will, cause he's a captain and a shinigami
