Since all the non-english speakers seem to be teaching their native languages, i thougt id give it a shot. Ill try to explain the grammar as we go along, but since i take all of that stuff for granted, i might overlook something important. If that should happen, feel free to ask.

First of all: Why should you learn swedish? Well, naturally it helps if you wanna move to Sweden :P. It will also help you understand danish and norwegian, since the 3 languages are very closely related. It might also be usefull in learning german, and in reverse, if you know german already you will find swedish alot easier. Or if you are a swedish-american (there are alot of those, becouse of the mass emigration at the start of the 20th century) you might wanna learn the language of your ancestors.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
http://hem.bredband.net/rolahm/grafik/flagga-sverige.jpg

Letters

First of all, swedish has 3 more letters than the english alphabet. Those are Å, Ä and Ö.

Å is pronounced like the O in "thorn"

Ä is pronounced like the A in "shadow"

Ö is pronounced like the O in "world"
-------------------------------------------
Ill be ripping of the scenario from Japanese Online, but adapt it for teaching Swedish. This is simply becouse i dont have the imagination to make one of my own

Hmm...I'm interested. My dad's mom was Swedish, so naturally, I am too. I also happen to be Norwegian. ^_^

A popular phrase seems to be "I love you". How do you say that?

mr_shadow
11-07-2005, 03:32 PM
I love you = Jag älskar dig.

Älska menas "to love", while älska-r means "loving". So the above literally means "I loving you"

"Dig" (prononced "dej". the spelling comes from an older form of swedish which nobody uses anymore) is the form of "you" thats used when the person is the object of an action (in this case, love), so dont confuse it with "du" that i mentioned in my first post

mr_shadow
11-07-2005, 03:37 PM
To confuse you further, the word for "love" is "kärlek". That is only when referring to the concept of love, like "fred, kärlek och förståelse" = "peace, love and understanding"

Jag har inte sagt att hon inte får vara här, jag säger bara att jag skulle vilja lära mig finska. Jag känner bara 1 en finne annars, och han är halv-svensk, så hans finska är nog inte att räkna med.

I never said she couldent be here, i just said id like to learn finnish. I only know 1 finn, and hes half-swedish, so i dont think his finnish-skills are reliable

mr_shadow
11-13-2005, 12:40 PM
Översättningarna finns där för att de som inte kan svenska ska fatta vad vi snackar om

the translations are there so non-english speakers will understand what we´re talking about

Ska börja jobba på min nästa post, och jag försöker förklara grammatiken så mycket som möjligt (utan att det blir för virrigt). Men ett misstag som vissa språk-lärare gör är att BARA koncentrera sig på grammatik, istället för ordförrådet. Jag tycker det är bättre om folk lär sig en massa svenska ord istället, och sen kan de läsa det vi skriver till varandra och bilda sig en uppfattning på så vis.

Ill start working on my next post, and im trying to explain the grammar as much as possible (without it getting to confusing). But a mistake made by some language-teachers is to ONLY focus on grammar, instead of vocabulary. I think its better if people learn lots of swedish words instead, and then they can read what we write to eachother and get the impression that way.

Counting in swedish (pronounciation differs somewhat in dialects, but this is the offical way of saying it):

1- ett

2- två

3- tre

4- fyra

5- fem

6- sex

7- sju

8- åtta

9- nio

10- tio

11- elva

12- tolv

13- tretton

14- fjorton

15- femton

16- sexton

17-sjutton

18- arton

19- nitton

20-tjugo.

30- trettio

40-förtio

50- femtio

60- sextio

70- sjuttio

80- åttio

90- nittio

100- hundra

After 20, you simply add the odd number, just like in english. Like "tjugosex" = 26. And "hundratjugosex" = 126

Articles and plural in swedish:

Something thats bound to confuse english-speakers at first is the absence of a word for "the". Instead of having a specific word to indicate specific article like german or english, we change the ending of the word. the most common endings used are -en, -an, -arna and -orna

En stol = a chair (literally: one chair)

Den här stolen = this chair (literally: that here chair)

En blomma = a flower (literally: one flower)

Den här blomman = this flower (literally: that here flower)

For plural, you usually add -ar or -or to the word. It goes like this:

Flera stolar = many chairs (literally: several chairs)

De där stolarna = those chairs (literally: they there chairs)

Flera blommor = many flowers (literally: several flowers)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wile writing this post, i suddenly realized that swedish has male and female words just like german. The words ending with -ar are male, and -or are female. Ill get back to you on how to tell the difference once i work it out myself (ive taken this stuff for granted my whole life, so im not really shure)

Ok, ive kinda worked out the genus of stuff now, and how to bend them properly:

Male l Neutral l Female

En pojke l Ett träd l En flicka

Flera pojkar l Flera träd l Flera flickor

Den här pojken l Det här trädet l Den här flickan

De här pojkarna l De här träden l De här flickorna

This might not be very usefull right now, but as you learn more words you can look back at this post to figure out the proper endings for things

Basic swedish swearing. Swedes swear alot, so its important to be aware of this stuff to understand what someones saying :P

Fan (pronounced faan) = A old name for the devil.

Satan = kinda obvious :amuse Not as common as Fan, but you hear it occationaly

Helvete = Hell

Dra åt helvete! = Literally "go to hell!", but is used more like "fuck off!"

Vad fan/vad i helvete?! = what the fuck/what the hell?!

Jävlar = Devils/demons

Skit = shit. "skit också!" would translate as "oh crap!", althoug "också" litterallt means "as well"

Kuk = Dick (not allways a curse)

Fitta = Pussy

Knulla = to fuck. Wile not really a curse, it falls in the foul language-category. Therefore it is (of corse) widely used

In old times people belived that all their troubles were caused by the devil or his subordinates, so shouting their name was a way of putting the blame on them when something went bad. This led to the majority of the swedish curses having some relation to satan, demons, or hell. I included the most common (there are tons of variations)

A funny phrase is when you say "i like you" (or whatever it is your liking). In swedish it becomes:

Jag tycker om dig

"Tycker" means "thinks", as in "has an opinion". "Om" means about. So the literal translation is "i have a (good) opinion about you".

Ive seen it inaccurately translated as "I think about you". Althoug it is technicly correct if you translate the individual words, the meaning of the phrase becomes wrong.

Ill see if i can come up with any other swedish phrases that sound funny when poorly translated :P

Now for a (supposedly) unique swedish word, "lagom"

Lagom means something along the lines of "not too much, and not too little".

*someones pooring my coffe* Ja, det där är lagom mycket = Yes, thats enogh (litterally: yes, that there is "lagom" much).

Its an old joke that swedes are "lagom" about everything. Swedes are TERRIFIED of getting into trouble, and we avoid that by not taking sides with anyone. If you for example ask a swede about his political views, he might reply "well im a leftist-man, but ill agree that the right has some smart ideas too".

This brings me too a word thats very common among teenagers, namely "typ". Its the equivalent of "kinda" or "sort of", and is applied to the end of scentances to soften them a bit.

For example, the phrase "Gustav lll var en svensk kung" means "Gustav lll was a swedish king". While "Gustav lll var en svensk kung typ" would mean "Gustav lll was a swedish king or somethin".

The reason swedes/teens use this word so much is that it shows that what your saying is not neccesarily the absolute truth. This saves you the embarresment of being busted if it turns out Gustav lll was in fact a DANISH king (he was swedish, im just using this as an example).

The usage of "typ" fades as you get older, since you know more about the world and have more facts to back up your statements. But still swedes try to be somewhat vague whenever they say something

As for the word "smörgåsbord" found in resturants (and always pronounced wrong by americans) it means: smörgås = sandwitch. bord =table.

So back in the day, these "sandwitch-tables" would be when you put loads of small dishes on the table and then have people eat as much as they like from it. The concept has since evolved to contain more things than just sandwitches, but the name remained

i met this sewdish bloke recently and he's given me the impression that there's some great rivalry between sweden and norway. basically he's saying that norwegian think the swedish are dumb cos they can't understand norwegian as well as norwegians can understand swedish. but at the same time he tells me that norwegians spend most weekends in the mountains...

i like to wind him up by speaking(poorly) my broken norwegian

Yeah, there is a friendly rivalry between Sweden and Norway. Norway is something of a "little brother" to Sweden, and just like brothers we are always fighting and making fun of eachother, but we always stick together when its something serious.

Hey, thats a pretty decent parallel i just cooked up ^^

And your from Finland, right?

Then its time to inform the forum of the phenomena known as Finlands-svenska. Thats the dialect spoken by swedish-speakers in finland and finns who have migrated to sweden. Finland was conquered by Sweden at one point, and we forced the population to learn our language, and it kinda stuck even thoug their a independent nation now.

Finlands-svenska is basicly swedish with a heavy finnish accent. Since the two languages arent related, the combination results in some odd stuff that sound either cute, sexy, or just plain ugly (depends on who the speaker is).

Like, the finns that i know speak the ugly version. But the character Marja in Ondskan wouldent be half as smexy if it wasent for that accent. So it really depends...

IMO the pronounciation sounds as horrible as Finns who can't speak English...

My Swedish skills aren't that good. :( I watched Tillsammans without subs a few days ago (to practise for the listening comprehension test) and didn't understand everything even though I almost know the movie by heart. ^^' But of course it would be great practise if I can't find Ondskan with subs. ^^

If you find a swedish movie you like, i suggest you watch it multiple times. Cuz i noticed that the main reason why i cant understand german at times is that they speak so darned fast i cant make out the words. But if i hear the same line of dialouge 1 or 2 times more, the pieces start to fall into place

Yeah, of course. ^^ The problem is just that I wouldn't understand all even though I'd watch it with Swedish subs. Really aren't that good in Swedish. For some reason the words are so hard to remember...

mr_shadow
02-19-2006, 05:46 PM
Dont worry about it. I can understand if its strange since the languages arent related. The only good way is to try and find patterns and stuff, by remebering that many words are made up of other words.

A language isent just a random collection of sounds. There is always logic in there if you just look deep enogh. Hell, there are even grammatical rules for when to use "en" or "ett" in swedish (althoug i dont know who they are. I just "know" the genus of a word when i hear it)

minori
02-19-2006, 06:19 PM
Yeah, Swedish is actually quite simple language - logical at least. Even more logical than English I'd say. The grammar isn't really the problem, just that I don't get to use the language pretty much at all and that's why don't remember words and pharases and so on. :/ Should watch more movies...

Is there really rules for when to use en and ett..? I'm not sure, but I guess the teachers hadn't taught those us at all. Maybe the rules are too complicated to give any help or something...

mr_shadow
02-19-2006, 06:25 PM
Usually you get the advice to use that which "sounds right". But i tried earlier in the thread to scientificly figure out just what "sounded best". And i came to the conclution that words ending with -e or -a usually are "en", and words that dont end with either of those are "ett".

This theory was kinda smashed when i discovered there are exeptions, but generally speaking you can go on that. But since moste people suck at explaining the grammar of their native language, you really shouldent trust my theories :P

Edit: These "special cases" are probably when the rule of the ending is overrided by some other gramtical rule that i havent yet figured out

Edit 2: Regarding your teachers, its probably like when i started learning german. I asked about the rules for der/die/das, and they told me "hey, just focus on learning how to understand the language for now. You will get plenty of grammar when you get to later grades". I think their trying to not confuse you uneccesarily, since your probably having enogh truoble without having to worry about wheter or not a word is En or Ett

minori
02-19-2006, 06:34 PM
I'm trusting in what it sounds to me too. And fortunately it's usually also working. ^^ I wish I had as good linguistic instinct in Swedish as I have in English...

Edit: Yeah, it's so much easier to learn a language when they don't make it that grammatical in the beginning. English which started in the 3th grade is a good example if you compare it to Swedish which started in 7th grade... Even though English was so easy just because we were so young they should do the same thing when teachin older kids and adults too.

Fongie

Hell, there are even grammatical rules for when to use "en" or "ett" in swedish (althoug i dont know who they are. I just "know" the genus of a word when i hear it)

What? :huh I've always thought it was like "le" and "la" in french, that they're just assigned to words and that there's no rule for it :oh

You can probably find patters in everything, but I doubt you can find even any general rule that works good enough for these :S

mr_shadow
02-19-2006, 06:57 PM
But come on my fellow swede: If i were to tell you just a random word, you would instantly know wheter its a "ett" or "en". Therefore there has to be some sort of rule that your brain uses to figure out which would fit best.

The thing with french (and maybe swedish) is probably that the rules are to complicated to actually explain, but you eventually learn them anyway by listerning to the way people talk

i found learning nouns in the definite singluar form helps me remember if it's common or neuter a bit better.
for example if i learn "the house" or "the car" rather than "a car" or "a house"

not sure if that's any help to anyone, but it's helped me loads with my norwegian. i'm better at learning the patterns rather than the actual words.

we're currently doing adjectives and verbs >_<

"Grattis på födelsedagen" is the usual greeting. The words mean "Congratulations on the birthday"

The swedish birthday song goes:

Ja må han/hon leva, ja må han/hon leva, ja må han/hon leva ut i hundrade år! Ja visst ska han/hon leva, ja visst ska han/hon leva, ja visst ska han/hon leva ut i hun-dra-de ååår!

Translation:

Yes may he/she live, yes may he/she live, yes may he/she live for a hundred years! Yes shurely shall he/she live, yes shurely shall he/she live, yes shurely shall he/she live for a ho-un-dred yeaaars!

När jag blir stor ska
jag alltid vara ensam

När = when

Jag = I

Blir = become (future tense)

Stor = Big

Ska = will

Alltid = always. "tid" means time, so the word literally means "all-time"

Vara = to be

Ensam = Alone. You may want to use the english word "Lonesome", as it sounds more like the swedish equivalent

Om jag skulle vilja skulle jag helt klart klara det, men varför fatta ett språk man inte talar? :P

if I wanted to, I could understand it.. but why would I understand a language I dont speak? :P

(most of my swedish is a kind of accent thing, alot of the words might seem out of place but they are not O_O, since I talk like that XD)

Om ni vill ha hjälp kan jag kanske bistå. Kul för mig att jag kikade förbi. Och jag kan bidra med en gnutta dialekt. ^^

If you would like help I might be able to assist. Funny for me to stumble upon this. And I could assist with a pinch of dialect. ^^

Honestly I don't know if anyone posted this but it is hilarious.

http://www.slayradio.org/mastering_swedish.php

Go there and listen to the lessons. It's funny. You can dowload them too if you'd like, ju right click and "save as" where it says "download lesson x".

Have fun listening.

Svenska är inte so svart.

If you would pronouce it now it would be "Swedish isn't so/that black" if you translated it to english after saying it. You forgot the å's in så and svårt. But maybe it was because of the keyboard layout. :)
