View Full Version : How to make a decent signature? *Recommended*

How to make a decent sig quicky:

Phase 1: The Start

- Download some grunge (http://images.google.com.my/images?q=grunge%20brush&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi) and some abstract (http://images.google.com.my/images?um=1&hl=fi&q=abstract+brush&btnG=Etsi+kuvia) brushsets.

- Start a new complication (350x125 px for example)

Phase 2: Create the background

- Choose white to background color, black to front. Do not use colors for brushing (yet).

- Fill the background with clouds (filters -> renders -> clouds).

- Make a new layer (shift-ctrl-n) and set the opacity into 50-70%. Brush around the background with black, do not drag. EVER.

- Make a new layer and set the opacity into 50-70%. Brush around with white color, with a GRUNGE brush-set. NEVER use 100% opacities. Use bigger opacity values for black layers to make sigs dark, bigger values for white brushing layers if you want lighter sigs.

- Make a new layer and brush GRUNGE around with black color.

- Make a new layer and brush around some ABSTRACT with white color.

- Rinse and repeat, be making the white-black -layers as many times to create the background looks good.
It (pretty much ALWAYS) will look bad in this phase, so don't judge it yet so harshly.

- Make a contrast adjust layer (layers -> new adjustment layer -> contrast&brightness). Amplify the background with high contrast, remove brighness as much as you add the contrast ( +20 contra -20 ).

Phase 3: Adding the image and the colors

- Get the render (stock picture, the image of the sig). Add the render there.

- Dublicate the image and make the previous sig unvisible (remove the eye on the left of the layer in the layer-tool)

- Put the blending mode of the new layer to "soft light" or "overlay". Go to filter-> blur ->gaussian blur and put value between to 7-15 px. Press Ok.

- Use the free transform -tool to make the image twice as big as it was before, skew it if necessary.

- Dublicate the layer and move it into a different position that has NO colors yet. Repeat as many times it looks good.

- Make the render visible again by clicking that "eye" again. Move it to the topmost, above all layers.

- Dublicate the render layer, and add some gaussian blur (filters - blur - gaussian blur), value between 1-2.5 is good. Put the blending mode into "soft light/overlay" or just lower the opacity into 10-20%.

- Make a new layer and brush a little around the picture. Put the blending mode overlay and it might look fantastic.

Phase 4: Adjustments (borders, colorifying, text)

- Add yet another contrast/brightness layer (layers-> new adjustment layer ...) to make the image look great.

- Add yet another coloring layer (layers-> new adjustment layer-> .... ) to make the image colors better.

- Add borders by selecting that rectangle marquee tool, press ctrl+a to select all and go to "stroke" and put the color black/something dark and size to 1-2 px. And if you want larger border, i suggest using different color than in the out-border (make a new layer and another stroke with bigger pixel ratio)

- Add the text effects with nice font (www.dafont.com/en/ is full of those) and your pretty much done.

- FINALLY, you can use the apply image (edit-apply image) feature and sharpen the whole sig canvas with unsharpening mask tool. 0,3px radius with 50 strenght usually works the best ... do it again a couple of times (ctrl+f) if it doesnt get sharp enought. ERASE some of the sharpened area with eraser tool to add depth (or then use the blur tool).
Hint: Sharpen foreground, smoothen the background and the places where the light comes from.

---

Hopefully this helps, really. And ofcourse there are MANY different phases also (like blending the render etc.) to make the sig look more better or just to make the sig unique, this is just the "rough guideline" for starters. And just one method, there are a helluva lot of those also...

Okay, I have been at this for about an hour -2 hours, and This is really complicating. v.v either I am really bad at this, or this is just to complicating, it does'nt say were to find most of the stuff etc.

Just follow the link i gave. Then, preview the brushsets by clicking that certain one, and watching how the sample looks like; if it's abstract, it's abstract, and if it looks crispy and so on, it's grunge. Easy thing...

And they does *not* necessarily have to be exactly grunge or abstract, any brushset goes. Those are just recommendations, that kind of stuff i personally like to use. But not like i always use this technique ... otherwise my style would become so repetive so quickly.

I tried to go over it with the brush, but it isn't good. Could you help me?

Excellent basic tutorial! Something people can do without having to have PS7, either.

Well, just to see how it would turn out - I tried! Nothing at all about this was pre-planned. Random brushing, random stock... wow.

Resize = EDIT-> Free transform.
Drag from corner whilst holding shift- button so you wont change the width-height-ratio.

Cut = Eraser tool OR eraser+magic wand ( http://www.mediacollege.com/graphics/photoshop/tool/images/magic-wand-icon.gif )
http://www.mediacollege.com/graphics/photoshop/tool/magic-wand.html

Putting it in to background = Move tool ( http://www.mediacollege.com/graphics/photoshop/tool/images/move-icon.gif )
http://www.mediacollege.com/graphics/photoshop/tool/move.html
^ resize it @ first thought

I'm trying to do your other tut, and some of the steps say this:

- Add gaussian blur @ 3,5-4.5px .. filters -> blur -> gaussian blur
- Now the stock looks better

It doesn't look better at all though, a lot worse acually. :S

chauronity
05-25-2006, 05:18 PM
^ remember to change the mode for the blending so "soft light" (=blending mode)
Otherwise it's blurred ...

But dont make that for the main stock, do it to the dublicated version of it -- edit->dublicate (or something, you'll find it from the menus)

@ yondi:

Pretty much any brush that leaves kind of dirty and filthy look to the background

- Select brush numero 26
- Adjust the brush properties in the menu to look like this :

- When done, brush a line behind the girl ... select a GRAY color (no colors)

Thanks, had solved that already though. :P Now I'm at the last step, can you explain this? I'll rep.

- Then use the "smart sharpen" with values from 100-130 @ 35-40* radius and use the eye as a ruler. (119% @ 37,1 in mine)

Done. Just add a typo (how do I add nice typos?).

(to add the borders, make a new layer and select all ->rightclick @ canvas -> stroke -> 1px inside w/ black or white, and done!) don't get that either. :P

Thanks! :)

debil
05-28-2006, 07:55 AM
Smart sharpen is a filter, you go Filters -> Sharpen -> Smart sharpen. A window will pop up and you have to enter the values. You can play around with the values.
http://mitglied.lycos.de/d3bil/help5.JPG

For the typo..well just write some text like in your sig "I don't lack hatred anymore" something like this. Try different fonts and stuff, then choose the best result.

For the Stroke i had to use another method. You have just the background left, then you make a new layer, go image -> apply image -> press ok. Then double click on the layer you just made and go to stroke -> inside 1px black or white.
