What's your favorite story from this great writer? I've always been inclined to "The Oval Portrait." I also enjoyed "The cask of amontillado" and the "fall of the house of usher." Hop Frog freaked me out O.o discuss about your favorite story!

"The Cask Of Amontillado" is my favorite. I love how he blends verbal irony with the dark mood.

I haven't read enough to say which is his best, or even to make a well-informed selection, but from the few stories I have read (The Raven, The Tell-tale Heart, etc.), my favorite would have to be "The Masque of the Red Death." I can't pick out any one thing that sets it apart, but I remember that being my favorite from when I read Poe in middle school.

The only thing I know about Edgar Allan Poe is that one of his stories appeared on the Simpsons....

That would be The Raven...and The Tell-tale Heart. And probably others, but I am not up to date on The Simpsons anymore, so you'd have to ask a die-hard fan. :P

I would recommend starting with The Tell-tale Heat, since it is the most accessible Poe story I've read. You can find that and several other Poe stories here:

That's a tough one. I would have to say "The Raven" only because it had catchey lines though. "Nevermore, Nevermore!".

Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.
For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.
Not really a story but I love that poem :smile-big

Yeah, I too like that one. Everyone died even though they tried their hardest to survive. The Gold Bug was another one, but I dont' remember it as well.

Out of the ones I've read, I guess it would be "The fall of the house of Usher." I'm not really an avid E.A. Poe Reader.

..hmm well I think i've read about 20 of his short stories... and I can't remember the name. It's the one where these two guys are friends, but one of them is faking and in the end tries to trap his friend in a wine cellar and kill him, Hmm damn I don't even remember partial details... sigh
Oh and also this story about this house that is filled with this weired mirror,

I love Edgar Allen Poe, except when he breaks off into long, off topic discorses, like the beginning in "Murders of the Rue Morge." My favorites of his are "The Masque of the Red Death", "The Black Cat", and "The Cask of Amontillado."

hmmm....I've read too many not to pick a single story...I enjoyed "murders of the rue morgue" "Fall of the House of Usher", and the "pit and the pendulum". "The Tell-Tale Heart" is a classic. I love "the cask of amantillado", but my favorite is between "the black cat" and "the masque of the red death"
The Black Cat because he is able to display gore with the reader only using his or her imagination. The Masque of the Red Death because of all of the symbolism of the different rooms (from birth to death) and how the prince runs through each room before dying in the black room with red curtains. Everyone stops dancing whenever the clock chimes. The overall theme that no one escapes the red death.
Poem wise....it's between the raven and Anabelle Lee...:laugh
Poe is probably my second favorite author of all time.

Does the raven stab him???
I don't think so...It just drives him more nuts than he already is.
But I loved The Raven and The Casque of Amontillado. I thought they were both cool.
The Masque of the Red Death freaked me out. A lot.
I think all the Poe I've read has been in school...And The Raven is one of my favorites mostly because of the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror I. I was three years old when I first saw that, and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world.

yeah...that simpson's holloween special made it even better.
No...the raven doesn't stab him...just makes him more paranoid.

I'd say The Raven or The Pit and the Pendulum. Both were fairly interesting.

I don't really read his poems, but the one I read from my teacher "Annabel Lee" was so sad and well-written. I'm going to read more of his poems later on!

Feeling nostalgic, how could I not bump up a classic like this? I remember reading quite a number of his works back in high school. The one I loved most of all was The Cask of Amontillado. After that, I also immensely enjoyed Loss of Breath and The Masque of the Red Death.
The one story that I could never read again is The Pit and the Pendulum, I found it...overly disturbing for some reason.
