Don't worry guys, probably sounded like I was moaning, but I wasn't. Just hoping that before long I'll have increased my vocab and grammar enough that I'll be able to follow whether it's in romaji or kana/kanji.

Had my first lesson today in grammar today, learning about 「ので」and 「のに」。

Ah, grammar. Blueangel is really good at explaining grammar. I am not. :(
Just curious - in your Japanese classes, how much explaining does your instructor do in English, rather than in Japanese? I'm assuming it's not a full immersion program.

So any explanations are done in the textbook (in English of course). In class, they try to keep everything in Japanese, except for maybe in the very beginning where they use Engrish a lot. Yes, Engrish. :laugh

For second years, though, it's very rare they use English, so pretty much full immersion, or at least they try to make it like such.

Mines fairly similar actually, from what I can tell from the first lecture. The teacher tried to keep most of the class in Japanese, questions were all asked in Japanese and English was only used to explain the grammar a second time to make sure everyone understood. She'd also answer questions in English if they required and English response, but generally it was as close to fully Japanese and she could make it without the class losing track of what was going on and what was being taught.

I've gone in at second year level though, so I think it's much more English based in the first-year classes.

Just curious about how the Japanese classes were conducted. Someone I knew once told me that his high school Japanese class was kinda lame; the instructor was too lenient and let the kids watch anime (Lain, of all things) once in a while as part of the instruction. :uwah

More Japanese weirdness: I was listening to Joe Inoue's "Closer" and thought, "Wow, this guy's English is terrific!" But then I noticed his pronunciation in Japanese sounded a bit odd - at first I thought I was imagining it but his pronunciation of "と" at the end of a sentence sounded like "tow" instead of "toh." Very unusual for a Japanese speaker. So I googled and found out that Joe Inoue was born and raised in Los Angeles! His parents are Japanese and he grew up bilingual. No wonder his English was so good. :facepalm

I am. Only in Introductory Japanese; it's my first semester. But I plan to continue for at least the next two years. Next semester I'll be taking an Asian Philosophy course alongside language.


BTW, do you all post on this thread because you're currently studying Japanese? Or because you just like the convo in Nihongo? I'm of the latter camp myself...

I would love to participate, but all I have learned and can apply are the alphabets [Hiragana / Katakana]; it's only been a month, so we haven't even touched on Kanji yet.

It's an evening class with an older Japanese native. He has broken English so you really have to listen, but I prefer learning in this way than from an inexperienced non-native, not to sound harsh or anything. It's more immersive. It forces you to pick up quickly on context and remember all of the grammar rules from other languages, and know how to apply them for /this/ language. In turn, your standards become malleable in your mind, easier to use and aids in learning other languages.

At points, I respond in a string of Spanish and the instructor finds it hilarious.

Yeah, I agree. Every week, I work 12 hours while still attending classes (which to some might not seem like a lot - I would know cuz I worked 30 hour-weeks during high school - but it's a big deal when attending college). In the beginning, I thought it was fine, but now I'm always tired and always have to catch up on work. It's annoying. :arg

But I really need the money - especially since I need to buy stuff like a camera and a new laptop (this one is slowly dying on me). But it's still exhausting. :scry

But it's not that I'm complaining. I really like my job. :nod

Take some Japanese classes? Self-study may be possible but I would think that'll be pretty difficult.

edit: Let me clarify myself - The sites recommended on the first page are good for supplementing what you already know and/or are currently learning. If you're trying to learn the language from scratch, then that might be a bit difficult. I know someone who tried using Rosetta Stone but I'm not sure how helpful it was - he quit mid-way through the program.

This is an AWESOME tool for learning japanese vocabulary and practicing listening to actual japanese. Register at this site and start with the first list on the link I provided you. It functions by using researched patterns of memory, and uses programs like iKnow and Dictation to drill you. Use both of these programs on a daily basis and you'll be set to go. The Japanese Core 2000 teaches you the 2000 most frequently occurring words in the Japanese language. There are options to drill in romaji only, kana/kanji, or just kanji. Any questions let me know.

It should be noted that you WILL have to use another tool for grammar and kanji instruction. While iKnow has built in sentences, it won't teach you the grammar rules. But if you want to increase your vocabulary to be able to hold yourself down in most everyday conversation then this is for you. It'll definitely build your speed and word knowledge to a conversational level. Just keep up with grammar and kanji using the other sites or by getting hold of a textbook. As always, a japanese friend or teacher is highly highly highly recommended. Besides, its fun speaking another language :)

If you absolutely MUST MUST do self study, there are several books available in the market as well. But you have to spend money. :(
I dunno whether sites are effective, especially free sites, either they stop you after a while and demand monthly tuition fees for continuing lessons, OR they dont do their jobs effectively.
If i may recommend something? If you really are interested in learning the language, get a good computer software, its the next best thing to a real person tutoring you and one time pay only! :nuts My sis personally finds "Human Japanese" good. And there is a trial version available on the web, so you can decide whether its worth paying for or not.

BTW, I have no idea if this is the place to post something like this, but do any of you guys here read a book in both Japanese and English? I'm reading Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore/Umibe no Kafuka atm. I'm getting a completely different impression of the story depending on the language I'm reading. The translation is well done, just certain words lend to a completely different impression. I'm talking about the difference between "pretty" vs. "beautiful" for "kirei" - that kind of subtle differences. Again, this isn't about mistranslations; it's more about different connotations and nuances based on word selection.

I'm dying to discuss this with someone.

P.S. if a thread like this already exist, plz let me know. Thanks.

I haven't tried doing that yet except with manga. But I do get a sense of what you're talking about. It's similar in watching movies and TV shows - original vs. subbed vs. dubbed. I can't go into detail, but hearing the original and seeing the subtitles, you can tell that the subs aren't always direct/perfect translations, but you understand that perhaps a certain phrase or word just can't possibly be translated with some kind of subtext. And then dubs, more so than subs, have to both recreate the context for foreigners and make sense of what is being said in general. The problem is that, in the way I view Japanese, one "word" in Japanese isn't just a word nor have a single, simple meaning. The "word" is a concept, one that typically needs a definition and not just an equivalent. But the context is necessary to at least narrow down the mean. Like you said, "kirei" as pretty vs. beautiful. But it's also clean vs. neat.

From a native English speaker perspective, Japanese language itself is pretty vague and difficult to translate without context. Perhaps that's why I hope to reread Genji in the original language, though I may kill myself from classical Japanese - I've heard horror stories. :(

Interesting question...From I've been told, there are plenty of occasions in which you can used the Chinese reading - it will make you seem more educated apparently. But if you constantly do, then many will perceive you as uptight and not able to relax. Say if you were to speak very formally and humbly all the time. Some would be annoyed after a while, because then you are really imposing on them with formalities.

By the way, it's generally excepted for people to say "Fuji-san" rather than "Fuji-yama." :amuse

It all depends on the context and situation, but it can alter the connotation of what you're trying to say.

For instance, in the example you gave between "sora/空" and "ten/天" -
these would translate as:
空を見上げる: look up to the sky
天を見上げる: look up to the heavens
Same direction, but slightly different.

Another example would be the word "市場/market" - it can be pronounced as "ichiba" or "shijou" depending on the context of the usage.
Ichiba: a market with lots of shops. Also used as in fish market (sakana-ichiba: think Tsukiji Fish Market), vegetable market (aomono-ichiba).
example: I'm going to the market (ichiba) to shop.
Shijou: used as a business term, referring to markets; e.g. kabushiki-shijou = stock market.
example: Results of the market survey = shijou-chousa no kekka

I've learned the letters/characters for the most part, but I usually forget as I don't have much to read in Hiragana. So, I was wondering if someone could post some sentences/paragraphs that utilize most (preferably all) of the Hiragana characters that way I could just print those out and continuously read the Hiragana to help me remember them better.

I've not read anywhere near all of this thread, but for those who don't know of it, www.livemocha.com is a lesson based (almost school like, and the best part is it's free, and there are native users of the language that help you on different lessons/labs/etc. Just submit a worksheet about the current lesson you're on, and then someone can review and assess you're ability in the current lesson. Very, very helpful. :D ) Language teaching website (almost every language is accessible here) and also for Hiragana and Kanji help, I would try out www.thejapanesepage.com


They have tons of help for that, and it's own forums if you need more in depth help as well. ^_^

This! I did the exact same thing, except I used to read Mihara Jun's Hamidashikko series tankobon. That and Tezuka Osamu's Black Jack - that's how I learned medical terminology and names of organs, etc. in Japanese. :edu

Your sentence should probably look like this.

こにちは。私は日本人ではない(would preferably used じゃない）。私はあなたのBLOGとLAMAが好きです。

Your Japanese literally translated to "Good day. I am not Japanese (language, not person)." I'm not sure what 好み is supposed to mean, unless you just mispelled 好き, which is the verb "to like". "Lama is cute."
