I failed my Japanese oral exam yesterday : ( Im so sad
most other people got 8's and 9's and I did really bad :" ( T___T
everyone was expecting me to get a high grade, because on all my other oral exames I always had high grades, so i failed everyone T^T *sob sob*

oh well.. shit happens I guess : / How are you guys doing?

Do you have any tips on remembering when to use which form? I keep confusing -nakereba narimasen, -naide kudasai, -te kudasai, koto ga dekimasu etc. And when to use the Ru form, and when not to use it. ( As in neru mae ni for ex. )

It might help, especially if you're a visual learner, if you made yourself a "cheat sheet" of sorts, where you have each inflection with a short "definition" (how it's used/translation) and an example or two (or three).

The act of writing (or typing) it down in an organized fashion might help your brain separate the forms from each other, while the "examples" are really just practice. And of course, say them out loud.

I tend to be aware of the rhythm of the sounds, like 'nakereba narimasen,' sounds almost... musical? :P and helps me remember its correct usage. I sometimes pull out my dry erase board and pretend I'm trying to teach someone else the concepts I've learned in class ^^. It helps force me to clear up my understanding of the concept.

A lot of the problem may be simply having a lot of new-ish info in your brain at once, and if you haven't used 'em a million times or you're nervous, it gets jumbled (least that's how it is for me). I also sometimes look up stuff online, even if it's in my textbook, cuz sometimes it's explained better elsewhere.

Yep, I think practice will definitely help. I have the same problem too and I guess it's probably because I don't get many chances to practise speaking in Japanese. :wink

You can park your car here

when you use ~mo ii, it means you are somewhat giving permission to the other person. It's alright, you can park your car here. You may park your car here.

~ga dekimasu is is more the the ability of the person.
日本語（が）できる？= Can you speak Japanese? Do you have the ability to speak Japanese?

So if you use ~ ga dekimasu in the sentence You can park your car here, it's like saying, " You have the ability to park your car here." And it sounds awful.

Levels of politness, to put it simple. Watashi is the most formal, boku is more casual, but used almost exclusively by males, and ore is the roughest sounding form of 'I'.

It all depends on the context which one you use. Watashi when you first meet someone, or you're speaking to someone older than you or who requires your respect. Boku when you're on more familiar terms, and ore generally only with close friends, as is my understanding.

Hey! Hee hee... unfortunately, that was the sentence. It just kind of trailed off. Actually, I think the meaning depends on the context, like what is happening in the situation. But sometimes, it isn't clear and I couldn't quite figure out what exactly should have come after the に. It would have been easier if it ended with を since lots of verbs can come after that. The only thing I know of that could fit behind the に is 会う. Can you think of anything else? :)

But if we put it into an English perspective, that essentialy says "It's fun, hiragana."
All I did was use an odd sentence order. Both Wa and Desu can be used to finish a sentence politely, and in informal Japanese there are probably less rules about sentence structure than in English.

No, he's right, that sentence doesn't make sense, informal or not the verb goes at the end.

Hiragana tanoshii da, that would be informal. Your version might make sense if you turned the comma into a full stop, that would be acceptable I think, just a little wierd sounding.

Dirty = kitanai (i-adj); past tense: kitanai -> kitana(katta)
"I cleaned my room because it was dirty" would be, "Watashi no heya wa kitanakatta kara, souji shimashita."

Good luck on your test! Assuming there's an oral component, take a deep breath, don't try to speed through just to sound like you know what you're doing (like I tend to do), and try to have fun with it. :) Relaxing is the best thing you can do aside from studying/practice.

Another simple question
when you pronouce the japanese word like: suki, so do you pronouce it as skii like skiinging or soo-key, becasue whenever I watch an anime they pronouce as skii-des:I like you. Is the reason they say it that way it's a western dialect thing?

It is from a panel from the Manga Mr. Fullswing which i am currently trying to translate as it takes quite awhile for the only group doing it to release a new chapter and i love this manga so much i am planning to do a decent release since i have nearly every single RAW volume.

If it helps this is the entire part of the panel that i need help translating.

Hataraitemas: How do you do?
Wa: means nothing it just emphasises the preceding word telling you what the sentence is about. Example Suzuki wa would make you know that the sentence is about Suzuki
Ka: It is added to state the word is a question.
Ichi: One
Ni: Two
San: Three
Yon: Four
Go: Five
Roku: Six
Nana:7
Hachi:Eight
Kyu:Nine(obviously kyuubi means nine tailed beast)
Ju:Ten
Juichi: 11
Juni: Twelve
another thing that is great about Japanese when they say month they don't have a seperate word for each month they take each number 1-12 and just add the word for month which is: Gatsu so January is Ichi-gatsu February is Ni-gatsu and September (my birthmonth) is Kyu-gatsu#

It's pronounced something like (su-key)

Actually, you are wrong, it's spelt with the phonetic letters for su (す）　And ki　（き）。
Buuuuut, the uuu sound drops of the su and it becomes ski.
This is quite normal for sounds ending in u, but getting into more advanced rules about japanese, it depends on the proceding and preceding sounds.
For instance, くん　（Kun)　Keeps the u sound, but desu（です） does not。
It also depends on how effeminate you want to sound, Or how much eｍphesis you want to place onto it.


These are some of the Japanese words I know

Wa: means nothing it just emphasises the preceding word telling you what the sentence is about. Example Suzuki wa would make you know that the sentence is about Suzuki

Your also wrong.
I believe it's actually ha（は）、For the purpose of writing correctly, it's　Only　pronounced wa（わ）。
Another thing, wa has alot of uses, for instance it can be used when refering to ancient Japan, or when counting　Birds and Rabbits.
It also refers to peace　And harmony and A hoop or circle.
And if you were going to talk about a person, すずきちゃん　In this case, It would be better to use ga(が）、Rather than wa.
This allows you to make a sub clause, using the wa statment.
Allow me to expain it like this, ga is a subject marker, while wa is a topic marker.
So, Suzuki is the subject which the topic effects。


Also, most numbers have at least 2 different ways to say them, for example, 0 is both zero(ゼロ） and maru（丸、まる）, and 4 can be both yon（四、よん） and shi（四、し）。

It's hard to type romaji in a correct fashion when using Japanese character maps.

The 「オイってば」 would be something along the lines of "Hey you" and such. It's similar to Naruto's "dattebayo" in that it's used to show more emphasis and focus on what the speaker is saying.

hey guys I'm learning Japanese right now. I'm taking Japan 102 at a university. I have a final exam coming soon on wednesday and I'd like to get some help. I need help on the conjegations like:

tabemasu (to eat) tabemasen (won't eat) tabemashita (ate) tabemasen deshita (didn't eat) tabetaku nai ( don't want to eat) tabetana katta (didn't want to eat) is this right?

nice, though I think "Didn't want to eat" is "tabetakunakatta". Tabetai - tabeta-kunakatta. "I" changed to "kuna" and "katta" is of course past form. Im pretty sure of this but I could be wrong : P Maybe you learned something I just didnt learn yet though : P

As for the site, I can reccomend www.j-prep.com. If you want to know a verb, type in the Dictionary or Ru form in the search thingy, then click on the little green circle with the I of the right answer, and then click conjugate verb. It will show you a list of some different forms of that verb. : ) If you dont know the dictionary form of a verb, just type it in English, ( like "eat" ) and it will give you an answer with "taberu" et voila.

I first encountered it in Lost in Translation when Bill Murray is in the hospital talking to an old Japanese man (I think), who asks him 'Irun desu ka? Eh, Nihon ni?'. "irun" is just a more casual/informal version of "iru no desu"

in your example Trunkten ('Irun desu ka?')the question means "are you there/here?" or "is he/she there/here?"
(note: japanese usually drop the "I", "you", he/she" "we/they" in their sentences, so sometimes you need to know early contents of a conversation before deciding the meaning of the one phrase/sentence/question)

I am having the same problem. What I do is set a limit for myself. For example, I will try to learn 5 kanji a day and the next day learn 5 more only after reviewing the 5 I previously learned. The hard part about this method is being consistent with learning 5 or more a day. I have found myself slacking up on my studying numerous times and that puts me behind :cry

I'm not going to give up. I will "eventually" master this language someday :zaru

Kanji's aren'y realy that hard - as long as you can catagorize them throu categories (like Bushu)... The problem are some kanjis that fall off those categories...

The first example you gave was the first thing that popped into my mind. The second example is also correct since もっている literally means "to have" something.

I have just started learning Japanese about 6-8 months ago, and already have the Hiragana and Katakana Syllabaries down and to the point where I can introduce myself. And, right now I am learning more about the particles in sentences. Would anyone help me out in finding a good source for finding all the particles and practicing them?

Also, i want to move on. I am struggling to either vocabulary in kanji, vocabulary in everyday stuff (apple, cat, dog, grass, house, etc.), (if I could mix those vocabulary categories somehow that would be amazing) or sentence structure. Can someone help me out on which one would be best?

Anyway, the best way to learn conversational/spoken japanese is to find a language partner. If you don't have access to native speakers at you're school, there are many tools on the internet that will help you get connected with native speakers via skype or some other method.

For those who have already started, learn the polite forms AND the colloquial forms. If you had to place an emphasis, however, place it on the polite forms. Respect is important among japanese and you can never go wrong the polite (~masu) form. Learning that will make learning the colloquial forms/plain forms easier.

I've been studying/taking classes for almost a year now, its a lot of fun for sure. I have quite a few japanese friends to conversate with and its always fun to learn new words from em.

neko jita

Meaning- its a colloquial term that basically means you are sensitive to hot (temperature) foods/drinks. Neko means cat, and cats' tongues are overly sensitive to hot temperatures. So the term neko jita comes from that. It is and acts like a noun.

Example- (after eating/drinking something too hot) Atsui*! Watashi wa neko jita**! Hot! I'm sensitive to hot foods/drinks!

*Atsui means hot

** desu generally doesn't follow this term, because it is a casual word. This means that the desu is omitted.

Currently trying to brush up on my vocab, which has always been my weakest area. For some reason I find it so much more difficult to memorize words when they don't have kanji to learn alongside them. I have been reading and studying about all this information you have given me, but have not learned it yet, i guess that would be because i want to do things in order. Like, I now currently have the Hiragana and Katana memorized and I am also learning how to introduce myself and sentence structure. But, like I said, I like to do things in order and I know I have that choice. I would like to plan on learning how to make my own sentence, but I believe it would be necessary to learn the Kanji/Vocabulary before I learn sentence structure, and/or Particles before I start making my own sentences. So, Hiragana/Katana > Vocabulary/Kanji or Particles > Creating Sentences(Punctuation, Object/Subject/Verb Placement, When to use On-reading and Kun-reading, etc. ) > Making Paragraphs. I believe that that would be the natural order to learn grammar for me. (I forgive me if I am off track on my Knowledge)

You're welcome, and yeah I very much get it. I didn't really seek out partners for purposes of speaking and learning about the culture until about a year in. But even then, its good to at least talk to them about japanese culture, even if it isn't language related. Not to mention they might teach you some cool words or phrases. I absolutely get it though. Anyway I have a great 200 page text that teaches spoken japanese. It is in romaji, but if you know kana than there is nothing to worry about. After completing genki, I have found this one to be far better in terms of teaching the spoken language.

If anyone is interested, PM me your emails and I'll send it out in bulk. Or I could file host it and attach it to this post if you guys would prefer that.


EDIT: The text is mainly conversation oriented. What I mean by this is that you will pick up good vocabulary from the examples (a pretty decent amount actually), but its focus isn't on vocabulary. It does cover formal/informal ways of speaking though. So I would go elsewhere for expanding vocabulary, but its awesome for grammar/speaking.

If you hit up the tv-links website there are loads. None of them are particularly beginner friendly but thats what you need. Everyday japanese is anything but beginner friendly, so just pick out what you can. The trick is to know what they are saying...as in the actual pronunciation and not really the meaning of the words/sentences. Its great for building listening comprehension, so pick one and run episodes in the background while you're doin stuff.

You will actually understand what they are saying as you build vocab and grammar. The hardest part about japanese is just catching what the hell ppl are spitting out, as its spoken very quickly and some syllables get cut short or go silent altogether.

It's difficult as it's all in one big bunch of romaji, but kokoro no kupido I think means 'The hearts cupid'. Not sure about Koi no aibou, it could mean 'My partners purpose', but that's a guess. Without the kanji I can only guesstimate.

Haha. Maybe. But considering I'm majoring in the language and culture, I need to be more serious. Perhaps I'll go back to reading manga in the original Japanese. And the kanji for "to like" (suki) is actually two symbols combined into one:
女　(woman) + 子　(child) = 好（き）　(suki).
This is actually my favorite kanji, because its meaning is so simple yet so deep! I just love this language so much, no matter how hard and complicated it is to learn.

It's easier to say it than to explain but here are some examples of how the small tsu is used:

kissaten (ki s sa te n): きっさてん

tappuri (ta p pu ri): たっぷり

kekkon (ke k ko n): けっこん

ressha (re s sha): れっしゃ


It's basically a short pause between each letter. For example, The difference between kitte meaning "stamp" and kite meaning a command to "come" is a short pause between ki and te in the pronunciation of "stamp."

When you have a small つ, it means that the word has a double consonant that isn't pronounced but rather makes a small pause in between syllables.

きっと = kitto
To pronounce, you have to understand that this word has 3 syllables. Instead of saying it as "kito (きと)," you actually say it as "ki/*pause*/to.

The way my sensei taught us was clap your hands as you say the word, and you should put only the same amount of equally-spaced claps as syllables the word should have. kitto (きっと) has 3 while kito (きと) has 2.

Typing it is easy. Just type the beginning consonant of the next syllable you'll get the small つ, like bbo っど、tte って, kki っき、etc.

This applies also for katakana ツ



The small ゆ is part of a hiragana (also katakana) combination that also includes small や and　よ. Depending on what form of romaji you're using, they can be written as:

き(ki)　　きゃ(kya)　　きゅ(kyu)　　きょ(kyo)
し(shi)　しゃ(sha)　　しゅ(shu)　　しょ(sho)
ち(chi)　ちゃ(cha)　　ちゅ(chu)　　ちょ(cho)

Remember that these combinations, like きゃ(kya) and　きや(kiya), are written and pronounced differently. And that you can only do this with the "i" kana.

The 1,945 characters of which you speak are the Jouyou Kanji which every Japanese person learns by the end of their compulsory education, and the characters you generally need to be able to read and write in Japanese. So yeah, those are all you need to be able to read manga/newspapers etc. You may need to know a few more to fully understand novels and harder texts that may contain obscure characters, but this is purely conjecture on my part.

So learn the 1,945 and that should be all you need when it comes to Kanji. Of course you'll still need to learn the readings, compound kanji and such, but on a basic level those will be all the characters you'll need to know.

For compound kanji yes, I just mean combining more than one kanji to make new words. The readings are the different ways in which you read and pronounce a kanji character, and which reading you use will change depending on how the character is used. (On it's own, as part of a name, in a compound kanji word etc.)

Woah, well, it's a big task and I'd recommend getting a few textbooks if you're serious about doing this the self study way, but there's certainly a lot of good online resources that I could recommend:

www.jisho.org - Excellent online dictionary with a brilliant Kanji search engine, use this all the time myself when I don't know what a kanji means or how to read it.

http://www.guidetojapanese.org/ - Tae Kims grammar guide, pretty much an online textbook for Japanese grammar, very useful when you get stuck on a grammar point or just want to do some more learning.

www.smart.fm - Online flashcard site that's fantastic for learning vocabulary.

http://ichi2.net/anki/ - Anki flashcards, another excellent way in particular for learning Kanji and their readings, I use this everyday to brush up on my Kanji and learn new characters.

www.lang-8.com - If you want to go one step further and actually practice writing Japanese, do it here. You can write an online journal, and people who speak the language that you are writing in will correct for you. Excellent to see how you are progressing and what you need to work on.

I have a question about writing characters. I'll use "Fu" for my example. I always see the lines that around the center of "Fu" being all curvy and stuff, but I'd rather just the lines straight. I was wondering if it would still be correct if I didn't make the lines curvy and instead straight. Yours is still fine. Obviously if you want it to look nice, or do it 'proper', then the flicks and the curves are important. Otherwise, no one is going to refuse to read your writing because it's a little straight. I'm the same, I write quickly and without too much care, so my Japanese doesn't come out looking brilliant, but it's still perfecty readable.

There's a lot of homonyms in the Japanese language, so in this case it's hard to say without a clear idea on the overall context of the word usage. Typically, the meanings are differentiated by the Kanji characters used. For example, Renka can mean either shoddy and cheap 廉価 , lotus 蓮花 or love song 恋歌 - so it all depends on how the word was used.

I assume that Renka 蓮花 Lotus could be the name of the Attack then.

(P.S. Is there a "Naruto" japanese audio thing too because i think i kept saying like maru or neji wrong...Naagji instead of Neji, IDK.)
