First time I've posted in here.
>_> I think there used to be a sticky or something for odd Naruto translation questions in the Scanlation forum. So I don't know if this fits here.
Anyway, I was wondering about the little mannerism Kankuro usually ends most of his sentences with. I believe it's "jyan". Could someone tell me if it translates as anything relevent?

I think it's just a 'hip' way to end a sentence.

K. I like it, it does sound hip.

I suppose you could say it's "hip" in a way of speaking. The ending "jan" is used almost exclusively by younger people, after all. It also has a nuance of sounding pretty immature in way, and certainly very informal.
It's actually a bitch when it comes to translating it into English. Still, it does have meaning/effect.
In terms of it's Japanese etymology, it is derived from the phrase じゃないか "ja nai ka", which is in turn derived from the phrase ではないか "dewa nai ka".
I'll see if I can't come up with a better explanation later on... I've got homework to do now.

its slang....sort of hip but not really...if you guys noticed (well, i do because im bilingual (^_^)!) the characters in naruto are all supposed to have certain accents,you know like english, southern accent, texan, pidgin(hawaii (^_0)!) and other stuff like that...
well, i do because im bilingual (^_^)!
Is it really necessary to say that in nearly every post?
You could save yourself some time and just put it in your sig ;).
On topic, I'd like to note that depending on how you say the じゃん it could make the sentence a statement or a question...
そうじゃん?
それは簡単じゃん。
or something of the like... ^^;

It reminds me of how on One Piece, the merman Chuu tended to always end his sentences with a high-pitched "Chu".
