Anybody who claims to be "naturally awesome" or stuff like that with a katana has to chop a watermelon cleanly in half and post the pic here. Just 'cause that's the test. Otherwise you have no "skills" just 'cause I said so.

I have a friend who did that at a ju-jitsu competition and took first place. First time he'd tried it too. I guess he has "real skills".

I don't have a katana...plus I don't have katana skills.
That means I lose twice :oh

True but cutting a human in half would be even more impressive

Well, the japanese used to cut through 5 to 6 humans at the same time to test a sword.

watermelon... I usually eat watermelon. I guess it'd be pretty cool to do at a party, but I don't think I'd do it just for fun. mmmmmm... melonade.

This is a pointless topic. And if they do chop the watermelon they should win some type of prize.

My friend won a samurai sword pried from the cold, stale hands of a fallen Japanese officer.

Awsome.

But I'd still like a prize if I chop a watermelon.

isnt this test sort of ..pointless
someone superskilled with a blunt watermelon isnt going to get nearly as clean as someone with shitall skill who happens to own an extremely sharp katana..?

i have 2 katanas.. both so no mishaps happen though : )

I dont think its that no one can do it, its just the fact as they walk over to the store to buy a watermelon, and how they plan on showing this display of sword mastery, they suddenly realize how FUCKING STUPID IT IS!

would you realy go buy a watermelon, cut it on a table making it splatter everywere so they have to clean it up JUST for some people on a forum to see it?? The whole point of the test is that if someone really can make a clean cut it won't splatter everywhere. You'll just have two nice halves of a water melon. You could easily slice the halves into nice pieces of watermelon and have a refreshing snack after your katana skills test. If I had a decent katana I would try it. As is I might try it with my miracle blades anyway... they should be sharp enough. :D

I don't have a katana, only a hakatana. (it may be a wakizashi, but I'm not sure. I think it's a hakatana, but I'm no sword expert. I just like them :)) I want to collect swords but I don't have a lot of money that I could spend on that hobby, and even when I do buy more swords I don’t think they'll be sharp ones because of safety issues. I might buy just one really high quality, sharp katana, but for the most part I'll probably just buy blunt blades.

It would be a waste if you whent to town on it with a standard hammer.......

Lol, you guys (and gals) are awesome, I had just about forgotten this thread when I scrolled down and saw two pages, thanks! Um, about this, I have done it , just too lazy to take a picture, but that is how I chop every watermelon I get is first with a katana, I prefer diagonal slicing. I haven't tried through bamboo, although I have like a bazillion really cool ones in my backyard. It's not so much the sharpness as long as you have an edge that when you let it fall from a 90 degree angle (straight, while holding it, like l / _ ) it will embed itself even slightly in the material, then you're good. Thanks again, post pics!
