View Full Version : Calling it Jutsu or Technique? Which do u think is better?
Roy Flame Alchemist

i think the Naruto dubbed might sound a little better if they just said technique instead of jutsu. When they say jutsu it just sounds stupid when american people say it. It might fit the american accents abit more of they just said techinique.

I.....really don't care, so I voted for both.
Niether is a mistranslation, so I don't trouble myself with complaining.

Same difference, whatever.
I'm annoyed with all the complaints about saying how they pronounce "jutsu".
ExAzrael
09-26-2005, 03:03 AM
as am I.
It makes me laugh at how many fans fake knowing Japanese, xD
the only reason "jutsu" in japanese sounds like "ju-(as in "just")tsu(t-soo)" Is because they speak it so quickly. quick lesson in japanese, folks. The japanese "u" is pronounced "oo", a long "U". yes there may be instances where that isn't the case, but this is not one of those words where that case applies. So shaddap.

Its just delusional otaku freaks and their elitist attitudes.
They think they know EVERYTHING there is to know about the Japanese culture, language, and anime.

this is another case of lipsynching(?), sometimes they need to stretch the lines to fit... both sound fine, im actually glad the use both on the dub.

I like that they're keeping a lot of Japanese in the show, but hearing jutsu without the "no" in front of it just sounds odd.

Sure it sounds off, you just have to get used to it...
would "jutsu OF a shadow clone" sound any better?
"art OF doppelganger"?
"technique OF me and my body"?
Its fine the way it is...

I voted for technique because I am against mixing the languages. Either transilate it all or keep it all. I say if they were gonna use Jutsu they should have used 'kage bushin no jutsu' or simply 'shadow clone technique' instead of mixing them both...
... except for teh case of honorfics and 'sensei' those needed to stay simply because they do not transilate very well.
nah-nah
09-26-2005, 11:21 AM
Honestly, though, about mixing languages... Doesn't english already do that anyway?
We have a lot of European words mixed in with our words as well... We use some Spanish words already... and honestly... I don't see anything wrong with expanding our - and our youth's - vocabulary. That is the beauty of America. We have no official language. We are a melting pot.
Besides... The Japanese use some of OUR words in THEIR vocabulary. What's wrong with us doing the same thing? It's not like it's doing any harm to either them or us. We're always going to have accents, and they are as well. No big deal... at least it's understood and at least we're all trying.
Nothing's wrong with mixing languages. Believe it-ttebayo!

In Naruto, 'Jutsu' is 'technique'; both of them mean the same thing. I don't see how it should be a problem if either or both are used.
Let's say one of Naruto's lines is: "Heh, how about a taste of my technique?" After his quick seals, he yells "Sexy jutsu!" and transforms into his girly version.
'Technique' can easily be replaced with 'jutsu', but keeping it there is for context. Now, if 'technique' replaces 'jutsu' in the second line "Sexy technique!" - it doesn't sound that smooth. :tem

Wow theres a lot of jokes on american ppl. We're not so bad just im angry that we barely got to se the first 3 episodes of naruto its fucking retarded! And doesnt matter how u say jutsu its going to be different for evry1 so dont just say american ppl sound stupid saying or it might fit the american accents better if u say techinique. At a time evry1 says it different no matter:mad who u are OR where u live its going to be different!

I like it how Viz chose it--jutsu. "Technique" wouldn't make it sound the least bit better, at least in my opinion.

Jutsu just... fits. technique would just set off the haters more, i mean i wouldnt care if they used either. And at first when i heard theres wasn't a "no" inf ront of jutsu i was like "darn" but its not anything that's really a big deal to me.

actually in the japanese the atacks are "insert name of attack" no Jutsu for example in japanese the Shadow Clone attack is Kage Bushin No Jutsu so for the purists i think Jutsu is the better translation belive it
Either one is fine. It's not a big deal anyways.

It doesn't really matter to me. Think they both work well. Use whatever one sounds better in context or is more comfortable for dubber.

It matters, what language its in, like if you say Kage Bushin No Justsu, Justsu is gonna fit better in that spot than "technique". But if you say Shadow Clone Technique, I think Technique is gonna sound better than no justsu in that spot.

09-27-2005, 04:27 PM
Well, I may not be an expert in Japanese, but my understanding of the term "jutsu" is that it carries a certain connotation that "technique" doesn't really replicate.
"Jutsu" generally refers to a range of skills or abilities, like a craft or an art (you see it a lot in martial arts, especially branches of martial arts dedicated to the practical application of skills, like jujutsu or kenjutsu). When it's used as "no jutsu" to refer to a specific technique as it is in Naruto it sounds sort of archaic and carries overtones of ancient magic spells and formalized martial arts techniques. Ninjas in folklore are linked with geomancy and sorcerors, and so it would make sense for them to use "jutsu" in place of "techniques."
"Shadow Clone Jutsu" at least retains some of those overtones. "Shadow Clone Technique" lacks the same implications and it makes the word "technique" seem kind of tacked-on and redundant.
Giant Enemy Crab

jutsu because it sounds cooler and easier.
ReikaiDemon
09-27-2005, 09:25 PM
Eh, I would've perfered it either way, but I guess I'll let my alter egos take over.
Logic wise, they should've translated Jutsu to technique, seeing as a dub translates foreign languages to the languages that their audience mainly speaks. It also doesn't make sense to the Toonami audience, well, most of them, and most of the VA have trouble pronouncing names anyway, so why use Japanese terminology?
On the other hand, they may have kept jutsu as a gift of some sort to the fans of the original, or it could be for dramatic effect. Also, Jutsu may take a new place in the english language, for common use, as like the Japanese who use english words like Computer(konpyuta) and german words such as randoseru (german for satchel)
Though on a neutral stand point, I don't care either way

the dub has its flaws and the fact that voice acters are mispronouncing stuff is the proof
all they have to do is pronounce stuff right and its not hard to pronounce words like jutsu, naruto, uchiha, uzumaki, or shikamaru

:notrust, of course i wouldn't like the dub if the names were like that. That would f**** everything up. And how the hell you can even compare mispronoucing Naruto into Billy-Bob is beyond me. There's no tomato envolved there:P ... i get your point but that was a lousy metaphor.
But why you think the voice actors are japanese i don't know. Unless your japanese or the VA director is japanese and is telling the VA's how to pronouce everything to the letter is.... too high of an expectation.
I don't make fun of people who can't speak english properly.. or I think mess a word pronuciations up, i go ughh i my head but i realize they were brought up in an enviornment and just kind of learned to talk that way.
I say if your going to bash anyone, be it the VA directors. it's there job to catch and stop this kind of thing. I now wish they would have as some haters might say "defieled" the rest of the attack names and turned jutsu into technique so i wouldn't need to listen to you complain... actually, "debating" this stuff is one of the things that makes the naruto english thread go round.

Well heres a solution.....IF U DONT LIKE IT DONT WATCH IT!.....Simple as that thanks for ur time. Besides its onli 5 eps it gets better with TIME. T-I-M-E. Just give the Dub time and im sure the VA's would pronounce everything carefully and right. Ok?! Ok.

Me? I'm torn on the subject.
Of course I prefer Jutsu, but these English cats don't have what it takes. "Sexy Jutsu" sounds freaking retarded, no offense. They better minimize use of the word unless they just absolutely need to make the jutsu sound excessively cool (which they'll fail at) or they need to do it for the sake of making it flow right.

if its a square, you can select multiple choices, if it's a circle you can chose only one.

Heh...All i saw was jutsu and i chose it without seeing other choices beside technique. Heh btw way it doesm't matter what they use in the dub. They mix in match it perfectly I think.

i have to say jutsu sounds better but i would rather have they not say the technique in english. it just sounds wrong.
Non-dubbed version all the way!

IMO, both sound ridiculous in English. As some one said earlier, "No Jutsu" carries overtones of the mythical and arcane. There really isn't a decent translation that doesn't sound retarded in English. They either should have left the names fully in Japanese (As I suspect they might for Chidori and Rasengan, they should do for Kage Bushin, Kawaimari, and Henge), or drop jutsu all together and just say "Shadow Clone!" and "Transform!”
We pick up immediately from context that they mean "Shadow Clone [spell!]", so why say jutsu at all?

I voted for technique because I am against mixing the languages. Either transilate it all or keep it all. I say if they were gonna use Jutsu they should have used 'kage bushin no jutsu' or simply 'shadow clone technique' instead of mixing them both...
... except for teh case of honorfics and 'sensei' those needed to stay simply because they do not transilate very well.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

So shaddap.
Fake knowing Japanese? Excuse me? I study a martial art called Budo Taijutsu. "Jutsu" is in the title. It's not "Juht-soo" (as in "just") at all. It's more like "J'tsoo" which is why a lot of people accidentally misspell it "Jitsu".
It makes me laugh that you make fun of people for their pronounciation skills (or lack of) and then can't even properly pronounce it.

Way to not read my post, dipwad.
I didn't say it was supposed to be pronounced that way(ju as in "just"). In fact, I said that was the INCORRECT WAY to say it. Yes you are right with your pronunciation.
And wow. Why the hell is this even an arguement? xD "oh noes, someone who doesn't speak japanese pronounced a japanese word wrong! TEHY R TEH STOOPID!!"
Aaaanyway. Don't get all up in arms about shite like this. But don't say I said something that I didn't when you have me quoted right in your post. :P

Tangent time:
I'm not sure why dubbers worry so much about mouth movements, when in the original Japanese they all but don't care about it. I've seen original episodes where people's mouths move for a full half-second before any speech starts at all. (Of course, they've generally been filler episodes, but I digress.)

I think I'm going to have to go with jutsu because it makes the technique sound more professional and more dangerous

I think if they said "Art of the doppleganger" It would sound better. I really don't care if the it takes a little more time and the mouth seems a bit odd, I just think most of the voice actors could prononce it better. I mean come on thats better then "Shadow clone jutsu".... Am I right?
And btw if this sounds tupid it may be cus its 1 AM and I am pretty damn tired.

I was delighted when they kept the authentic "jutsu" and "sensei" titles! No, it ain't because I saw the original Jap version first, but when most anime's terms are Englishified, it sounds downright hokey(like "reverse-blade sword" being screeched by Eng. Yahiko:arg in Kenshin). I actually liked the word doppelganger, though(maybe just my German blood, but hey!). *cowers for onslaught of rocks*:bees
I noticed how they kept it Jutsu, when i watched a dub out of interest. I'm glad, i'm too used to Jutsu, and Technique would sound weird.
Meh, i'll never watch the dub anyway. ¬__¬ So it doesn't really matter.

Japanese Gai's "Oh my God!" - priceless. There's some things money can't buy, for everything else theres Yu Yu Hakusho.
Anyways voted for Jutsu, same difference.
In Japanese it's
*No Joots*, not the way to spell it but a rough translation of how to say it.
In english it's simply *Jootsu*
