View Full Version : What will they replace "Usuratonkachi" with?

Do you think they'll make a replacement to Sasuke's token insult to Naruto. It's really unique way of calling someone an idiot. An explanation I once got for it:

I actually asked some japanese people what "うすらとんかち" meant in japanese and they're explanation is diff. They said the word usuratonkachi is a metophor, where "tonkachi" means something along the lines of 泳げない(can't swim, but they actually said "can't swimmer." them and their engrish :P ). Then I asked if うすら came from the word 薄い, which they replied no, but they couldn't exactly explain where the word "うすら" came from. Funny how they said, "Even though I've never heard of the word being used, I know what うすらとんかち means." Best english word related to うすらとんかち that they can think up of without knowing any real english swear words were "Idiot" and "Fool" But I'd say the way sasuke says it, it's more like "dumbass"

So I wonder if they'll just replace it with something generic like "Fool" or "Idiot", but there are WAY too many lip flaps for that I'd think.

That's gonna be pretty funny when the character's lips keep flapping another few seconds after he says it then.

They'll just use idiot and cut out the extra, now unneeded, scenes (or just edit Sasuke's lips so they aren't moving after he finishes saying "idiot" or whatever they choose to replace it with). Trust me on this.

I get the feeling it will be translated as 'Dunce' rather than idiot or such.
Don't know why, but I just get that feeling...

Err, just because there are extra flaps doesn't mean they will not fill them up with some other dialouge -_-; still finding things to complain about ? :D

What the hell are you talking about? I was one of the few defending the damn dub last week. I just asked a fucking question. Can't I wonder about something or is that not allowed?

They took the time to add in a replacement for Dattebayo, so clearly they're trying to keep character quirks in check in some form in the english dub. No one uses "Usuratonkachi" in Japan. It is UNIQUE, so I'm just wondering if Viz will try to translate this in some form in the english version.

Oh I believe you that you stand up for the dub, but why you say this "That's gonna be pretty funny when the character's lips keep flapping another few seconds after he says it then."

It's like a magical negative thing :D No need to get offensive.

(Chill guys, no need to pick any fights...)

They might translate it as "total idiot" or "complete idiot"; that's been used plenty of times in fan translations, and it would allow for more lip flaps. (For example, he could say "the total idiot" or "you total idiot"; six syllables for each, so it'd work.) Or they could just translate it as the usual "idiot" or "dumbass" and add extra dialogue to fit it in. Either way would work.

How's about "dead last"?

Dumbass...probably not, no matter how amusing that mnay have been I picture them saying "clumsy moron" or something along those lines...I dunno, maybe its just me. *shrugs*

I agree with Spectrum, they'll probably use "You complete idiot", or "You total moron", or a variation of the two phrases.

Because that's what it said in the Viz manga?

I think they'd say "clumsy idiot" to replace it with. I think I remember usuratonkachi being translated that way once so I could see that happening.

The Elephant King is correct.

usuratonkachi translates to clumsy idiot, and I'd be more than happy if that is what they use for his trademark insult.

Awww, I was gonna post clumsy idiot, it almost has as much syllibles as usurakontachi, and it's easy to say, so it's possible they're gonna use clumsy idiot.

i vouch they should use the word "gimcrack".
a friend of mine was checking the dictionary while playing Scrabble one day and he randomly found this word and it means "someone who is useless and of no value".

Lol. That's be pretty funny. Gimcrack, huh. They might not use it in Naruto but I think I'm gonna use that word from now on.

We're really digging deep for things to be concerned about, aren't we?

Extra lip movements in an anime dub happens constantly. Usually you don't notice unless you're scrutinizing everything, which I'm sure a great number of you will do. Watch oldschool anime to see some extra lip flaps during a conversation. A lot of the time they aren't even synched that well, but the message is still delivered.

If the comment in question is too long they might even throw in a short sentence. "You're an idiot" is a lousy five syllabals and can be spoken at varying speeds. Just an example.

 I've always heared usuratonkachi translated as "moron of morons." Is that completely off? But it probably will be replaced with something that has idiot or moron in it. I prefer moron myself.

I say...
Iiiidddioooot. Dragged out as such. And instead of extra lip flaps, they'll just leave the mouth open the whole time and have Sasuke's eyes widen to comical proportions.
