The Edit List Thread, Episodes 1 and 2 (beware, MAJOR SPOILERS)

I promised you an Edit List, and here goes, beware, to all living in the Canadian territory, the UK, or other Anglo-speaking nations, MAJOR SPOILERS:
This thread is not for voice, BGM, and/or other discussions. It's only to discuss edits from the original version. All of these edits WILL NOT appear on the DVDs, though. :thumbs

Episode 1: "Enter: Naruto Uzumaki"

1) No credits at the start of the episode
2) Blood on the shinobi's faces while battling the Kyuubi digitally painted out, though they failed to paint out blood off of a crouching shinobi's leg.
3) Dub Opening shown between the 4th Hokage's attack, and Baby Naruto
4) No "R*O*C*K*S" theme in the dub (a given!!!)
5) Naruto BGM replaced "R*O*C*K*S". Guess VIZ and/or CN is not giving us a bone anytime now.
6) Opening credits changed from Kanji/kana to English text
7) Sakura's "Shannaro!!" was probably replaced by "I kicked butt!!"
8) Oiroke no Jutsu was translated as Sexy Jutsu
9) Oiroke no Jutsu was KEPT INTACT; however, Iruka's blood rush was painted out, so the joke wasn't in par with the original.
10) As pointed out by Tazmo, and everyone else, "Dattebayo" was replaced by "Believe it!"
11) Bunshin no Jutsu was translated as Clone Jutsu
12) Iruka getting stabbed by the kunai barrage left intact, however, blood gushing out of his leg wound while removing the kunai painted out.
13) Close-up shot of Iruka cut. Weird........
14) Iruka coughing up blood and blood dropping to Naruto's face was painted out........I see a pattern. However, blood coming out of Iruka's back wound left in.
15) Blood spurting out of Iruka's back while removing the shuriken painted out............what a shocker!!!! :omg
16) Kage Bunshin no Jutsu translated to Shadow Clone Jutsu. Certainly a WHOLE LOT BETTER than that "Doppleganger" crap.
17) Pool of blood under Mizuki's pwned face was removed.
18) No "Wind" played, as expected, however.........
19) Next Episode Preview was kept intact, with Kanji and all (Except the Episode title)

Episode 2: "My Name is Konohamaru"

1) Naruto's Ninja Registration list was changed from Japanese to English text.
2) Oiroke no jutsu again kept intact, I'm shocked there was no Tenchi Muyo's digital bikini painted on Female Naruto, even though the steam was strategically placed (the original version had the steam on the Oiroke too) :jk
3) Hokage's blood coming out of his nose removed. Apparently, the VIZ and/or CN censors can't tell a joke if it pulled out of their asses. The weird thing is, they show Sandaime wiping off his nose for some reason.
4) Naruto and Konohamaru's visit to the Adult Mag section was KEPT. So it's OK to show kids reading adult material, but it's not OK to show blood spurting off people's noses after the Oiroke no Jutsu??? Talk about major irony!!!!
5) Nice transition from Japanese to English when Naruto was explaining Konohamaru the "Catra",...er....Chakra.
5) Konohamaru's explanation of his name was changed a bit, to accommodate Japanese to English transition, and I commend VIZ for this.
6) Harem no Jutsu was translated as Harem Jutsu, this is as close as we'll get from a true Japanese interpretation. Though I ain't complaining, since the scene was kept.........but............
7) No blood coming out of Ebisu's nose. The joke is half-assed now.
8) Hokage smoking from his pipe (with smoke and all) was left intact. Surprising to me!!!!!!!!!

Well, that's about it. Like I said, this thread is for edit discussion only, but ONLY FOR THE FIRST 2 EPISODES, anything from Episodes 3 and beyond will be edited out by Moderators and/or Super Moderators or Admins.

I'm quite happy that Japanese terminologies, such as sensei, jutsu, and such were kept, though the VAs need to pronounce them right, though.
Nevertheless, the episodes were left intact, despite the obvious cuts and cover-ups. Kudos to VIZ and CN....although I'm still bitchy about the Oiroke no Jutsu joke.............

Let me quote what I said in another thread.

What I hated the most was that Mizuki lost whatever little depth he had due to the rewritten script. Gone is the Mizuki who sees Naruto as Kyuubi himself and replaced by a guy who just feels like being an ass (not like the original didn't like being an ass though, don't misunderstand me :P but it removed the pretty much only unique trait he had). Also, there was a reference for another event further down the line that was removed, but seeing the anti-spoiler rules here I can't really venture deeper into that... wasn't really important anyway, I'm sure nobody remembered that reference when the actual event happened (I noticed the reference when I re-watched the series later).

I'm sure several more of these smaller things that you don't notice by casual watching will be edited as the series moves, simply by oversight.

The "Catra" was actually something the writers had to think hard about.

The original has Naruto saying "Chatora", which is "Brown Tiger" in Japanese, so something had to be thought of.

EDIT: For instance, you mention the translation of oiroke no jutsu into sexy jutsu yourself, that's script-related if anything. So yeah, try to fix up a better definition of what you meant with "edit" in your first post. If I misunderstood, more people most probably will.

Nice avatar Naru-chacha. I love the JETS. Anyway, I can understand why they would take all the blood out, but I'm suprised that they kept the "sexy jutsu". Ah well, maybe parents will complain and it will be taken off the air... T_T I actually enjoyed it... I want them to show an episode every day though. Let it catch up with the japanese anime.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it everyday, but airing it every week will give the series a chance to be developed, and translated with no rush at all.

The "Catra" was actually something the writers had to think hard about.

Wasn't 'Catra' a misprunionation of 'Chakra' but Naruto said 'Catra' purposely to find out if Konohamaru knew something. Konohamaru told Naruto that 'Catra' was chocalte and NAruto started saying 'Chakra'.

Regarding the blood...I believe the people who did the editing already explained that they have to cut out any blood that is coming out of the body. But they can(and did) leave in non-flowing blood like the blood stains.

I was also annoyed with the whole nosebleeding thing cut out. There was plenty of bleeding shown during the Iruka/Mizuki fight, etc... so it just doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe they're skittish about showing any blood that comes from the head; that's what I noticed.

Its not what the nosebleeds imply. Any blood coming from a person, dripping, gushing, whatever is edited out, simple as that.

Only edit that bothered me was removing the blood from Sexy Jutsu...yeah, that's consistent with how they said they were going to edit the show, but it really hurt the joke in my opinion. Naruto actually "defeats" Ebisu with the Harem Jutsu, and the lack of blood made it seem more like he just surprised him. That's not necessarily CN's fault though, some things just can't be edited and/or translated perfectly. Part of the fact that "Sexy no Jutsu!" always sounded so funny to me in the sub was because the characters said the word 'sexy' with great emphasis, like they were so impressed that they knew what the word meant:). That joke obviously doesn't work in English.

Other edits were suprisingly smart though, "Catra" and Konohamaru's name explanation and such. I'm sure we won't agree with everything they do, but it does seem like some thought is going into the editing process; they're trying to make changes that actually make sense, not rip out anything they don't like even if it totally messes up the show ("Cardcaptors", bleh.)

It really doesn't make much sense doing it entirely. In the Sexy Jutsu, it just adds to the joke, it has no implication here, they kept it in tenchi muyo, it just wasn't a gusher.

I don't see anything bad about nosebleeds that is should be edited out. Or coughing out blood.

Blood flowing I guess is reasonable or a pool of blood (but this makes me wonder how the whole Itachi Massacre of the Uchiha clan will come out or the whole Tsunade arc but they have a whole year to think about it... Or it could be a reason why CN only signed on for a year who knows?) and look at that the one thing I was waiting for the true pronounciation of Sasuke came out (scene of Iruka telling the class to perform a transfer jutsu). I remembered a battle about how it was truly pronounced so those who remember that well the english seems to have pronounce it about as good as the Japanese. The U is Silent!!!

Despite keeping some original music. They put in a new Opening Sequence specifically the first episode which shocked me really. I thought it would just be like the original where they just start everything without an opening until the second episode.

After the possibility of the thought of the butchering of jutsu names so far things are okay. But there are still a number of jutsu out there we don't know the name changes of. They kept the title's. Expected for a second I thought they would actually use Journeymen instead of Jounin. Though how many felt a little weird when they heard Iruka pronounce Genin? I did. Okay I'm done.

The blood from the Sexy no Jutsu was a safe cut, because not only is the blood's implication unknown to English audiences, but it was also flowing blood which, again doesn't make sense to English audiences, considering it wasn't an injury. It's better that they painted the scenes rather than cutting them as I feared they would have done, if they didn't care about the series.

What I can't understand is them cutting out Wind. It was in English, and it wouldn't have costed too much for licensing. Maybe Viz will do us a favor to make up and cut the stupid canon episodes, and ONLY the stupid ones. They can't cut out 101, and 148 for the closet perverts;).

Well, the person who said Genin was different from the ones who said Jounin and Chuunin. Just because one person said it right, doesn't mean that another voice actor will do the same.

Plus, in that interview done with the Naruto dubbing staff, they said that ususally the actors do thier parts seperatly, so there is little chance of Quinton Flynn hearing the correct way to say if from....whoever played Ebisu

Over all I thought the edits were done tastefully. Atleast they didnt take out complete parts of episodes like in dbz. I'm dissapointed in their translation because to us we see the literal translation or the near literal intrepetation of the fan sub translator. I feel that its important that new watchers know the difference betwen bunshin no jutsu, which is the "clone" jutsu and kage bunshin no jutsu which was translated as shadow something jutsu. The show didnt make it clear that those where actual bodies and not "shadows" like normal bunshins. Also the reason kage is put at the front is simply because it is a very advanced technique that few people know how to use. Kage might mean shadow in japanese or some kind of equivalent but the connonation is king or master as in the hokage which is translated as fire shadow but we know him to be the strongest ninja.

Basically what I'm saying is, they dumbed down the show. They "edited" the content to make it more accessable but in the end it lost something that really set the series apart from others for me. I fell in love with the story because it was real, and all the details were there for you to discover, it wasnt fake. This kind of "cencorship" hurts the story. OF course kids dont knwo the difference so its all good. I thought Dbz was the shit when it came out and it wasnt till later that I realised the fansubs were light years ahead.

I thought the cuts were set to a minimum and done well. The whole blood squirting out thing was a bit melodramatic plus it's cultural. It wouldn't make much sense to American children who, probably after the second episode would get it, but it doesn't really do anything for them. I can understand cutting out any unneccessary blood for television.

And I LOVE the translations of the jutus's. They did it so well! <3<3

This may be out of topic a bit, but when Naruto progresses a bit in Toonami, there might be a possibility that Naruto will be moved to Adult Swim???!! Then they would show slightly less cut versions, (with running blood) of previous eps. A hopefull but doubtful possibility.

1) Opening and Ending left intact.
2) Blood spurting off of Hokage, Iruka, and Ebisu's noses left (After Naruto's Oiroke no Jutsu)
3) Probability: Script's small changes to include curses (damn, ass, and hell, for ex.)

The reason why YYH moved to toonami was because of it's bad ratings with adults in Adult Swim. It did well with teens and kids but Adult Swim has never cared for them since they're not the target audience, despite how a lot of kids and teens watch AS. Have you ever notice how they only mention the 18-34 audience in the ratings? Case Closed was cancelled for the same reason.

The edits in Naruto so far weren't bad. As for the nosebleed thing, most americans wouldn't get the joke anyway since it's a Japanese humor thing.

I've noticed something. It isn't an edit (sorry:wink (even THESE smilies are limited...), but: In America, they are sO slOW with translating the Manga. Only like 7 volumes or something. But I visited a French "megastore" and it actually had Manga, and it had Naruto, the latest Manga was... dunno right now what the number was,, U-Wah! That would be spoiler explaining the picture... erg... It was in the 17 area I think. So, Here in France they are pretty far compared to American Naruto Manga. What's with that? I don't think there's a Naruto French dub yet, though.
