The Ise Nanao FC

Ise Nanao (伊勢 七緒) is the vice-captain of the 8th Division of the Gotei 13, under Captain Kyouraku Shunsui, and vice-president of the Shinigami Women's Association. She is a very serious and pragmatic person, which is at odds with her captain's silly antics, but like all vice-captains, she is extremely respectful of her captain and follows his instructions without hesitation. She is almost always seen carrying a heavy book. Nanao is often accosted by her captain, whose teasing takes various forms. Nanao's usual reaction is to scold him or hit him with something, usually a fan. When she is particularly annoyed she takes off her glasses. Though her face has never been seen while doing so, this act is apparently quite frightening, as most people who see it are reduced to gibbering wrecks just by witnessing it. Even the sadistic cold hearted 12th division captain Kurotsuchi Mayuri fell victim to this intimidating spectacle.

I sincerely apologize for the late response. College has kept me busy for the last month or so. Thankfully the semester is over now so I should be active from now on.

After reading this week’s manga chapter, a thought occurred to me. It contains spoilers, so out of respect for anime-only viewers or those who are not up-to-date with recent developments, I will place the following in tags.

Considering Kyouraku-taichou sent his lieutenant to investigate the incident in Rukongai, I am under the impression something will happen, which may either imperil Lisa or has an influence in some way to her eventually become a Vizard. However, this is only speculation at this point. I am wondering if this might have some bearing, as to why Kyouraku-taichou always seems reluctant toward Nanao entering a combat situation. Clearly she is a gifted individual, or else I do not think Nanao would have been selected as his second-in-command.

Perhaps, the recurring thought of losing another vice-captain could trigger old wounds, and serve as a bitter reminder. Maybe there is more underneath the surface, than him displaying ardent affection for Nanao. This is not to say that he may not truly care for her, as it is every captain’s responsibility to safeguard his or her subordinates. But Kyouraku-taichou appears extremely protective where Nanao is concerned, at least in comparison to the other leaders regarding their lieutenants.

This is an idea which I mulled over for a bit and questioned, if anyone else felt the same. Or does anyone share a different point of view on the matter?
