I think that you have to have some software.

you need to have photoshop CS or GIMP or any of those other programs to make a banner ;)

Well it's usually taking a pretty picture, resize it to be small, and add some effects like the ones used in konoha studio.
Then you upload it on imageshack, and you put it in your signature within the code of a hot-link instead of the tekst. Let the hotlink lead to your fc.
