At the moment, this site is down (should be back up tomorrow). However, it gives detailed descriptions of the changes from the amazing One Piece to the "dub". These include changes on character development, important cuts and edits, music, scenes, dialogue, and even storyline.

Discuss what you know and what is listed in this site.

Edit: In addition to these, text all over the show, English and Japanese, have been removed, as well as cigarettes, sake/wine/beer etc, guns, and some knives.

Many fight scenes have also been cut, and knives are often placed further away from a person's body than originally.

My 10 year old nephew visited from NY recently. Once he found out that I had dvds of One Piece (subs that I burned to dvds of course), when we're not out taking him to theme parks and such, he would spend the day watching the OP subs.

The first thing he said was, "How come they cut the scene when all those people were struggling in the boat?" (first episode).

Then, after watching the 2nd episode, "How come in the US version he's named Zolo?"

They cut out half of Usopp's fight against Chu, including all of his speeches. They also cut out his duel with Daddy the Father and the Little Garden arc, which helped develop him a lot. I have a theory that Tony Tony Chopper will hardly ever fight, and they'll just have him around to increase toy sales, and the fight against Mr. 4 and Miss Merrychristmas will be cut out.

Bicycle, baseball, skateboard, skooter helmets. Kids have to wear helmets now for everything but jerking off. Grown-ups have taken all the fun out of being a kid, just to save a few thousand lives. It's pathetic!

What's happened is, these baby boomers, these soft, fruity baby boomers, have raised an entire generation of soft, fruity kids who aren't even allowed to have hazardous toys, for Chrissakes! Hazardous toys, shit! Whatever happened to natural selection? Survival of the fittest? The kid who swallows too many marbles doesn't grow up to have kids of his own. Simple stuff. Nature knows best!

And you'd be anxious and depressed too if you had to put up with pathetic, insecure, yuppie parents who enroll you in a college before you've even figured out which side of the playpen smells the worst and then fill you with Ritalin to get you in a mood they approve of, and drag you all over town in search of empty, meaningless structure: Little League, Cub Scouts, swimming, soccer, karate, piano, bagpipes, watercolors, witchcraft, glass blowing, and dildo practice. It's absurd!

Actually, as I remember, there were quite a few slap-stick scenes in Pokemon's dub, such as Meowth scratching Jessie and James when they were being stupid, or in the first episode where Ash was constantly being shocked by Pikachu.

Scenes like this are gone in One Piece, no matter how meaningful. Like when Nami said she wanted to be adopted by someone rich instead of Belemere, and Belemere slaps her. This scene was replaced with a scene on arguing over Nami's bed time, no slapping at all. Also, Luffy didn't hit Coby in the first episode, and to make sure people think he didn't hit Coby, Luffy even said he wasn't going to hit him. Despite all of the claw marks Meowth has left in the faces of his comrades in the past, a number of bruises, cuts, and scratches were cut out.

You also forgot that comedy and drama were also cut out.

I just started watching the very bad hk subs of one piece to appease me, and I noticed all the garbage they threw end there. I can't not for the life of me understand why they took the soul out of the cartoon. However, they are going to pay for it. I hear the show isn't doing as well as expected. Hopefully 4kids will realize you can't make a "pokemon" whenever you want to.

I've seen a couple of eps on tv, and was so appalled I havent watched it since. I've heard about the edits they've done though, and... *engages rant mode*

I cant believe they skipped the ENTIRE of Little Garden!
I mean, seriously, why? It's possibly one of the more kid friendly parts of the series! Yeah, the giants are fighting, but so what? Kids know about fairy tale giants, and they know giants like to fight. The fighting isnt even that violent (no blood till much later on, so no editing required).
That also means no Mr 3, and no Sanji finding out about Croc and getting the Post for the next place.
What the fuck are they gonna do about Mr 3 when he appears later on, inside the Bananadile? He's the reason they escaped, surely they cant edit him out.
Theres also the fact that this arc provided alot of character growth for Usopp, but I suppose character growth is a foreign word for 4kids so I'm not suprised they dont care.

Before a show is aired on TV (at least in the US), the company usually uses test audiences to watch the show and later give feedbacks. If the feedbacks are bad, the show never airs. If its good, the show does airs.

That meant that there were people out there who had the power to stop the One Piece dub from seeing the light of day...and didn't use it!!

The changes that really started to make a difference started at the Don Krieg arc, but there were massive amounts of them at the Arlong arc. Also, they had shown a dubbed version of We Are somewhere, forgot where, but then used the rap shit instead.

Smoker's name was changed to Chaser. His cigars were removed. Random smoke comes out of his mouth, which can be assumed to be his powers. His attack names don't have the word "white" anymore, but do have "smoke". Ironic, huh?

They'll probably have Mr. 3 fail some other mission, but that still wouldn't show how they know about his powers.

One final grumble for now, I gotta say I hate every single voice I've heard. Luffy sounds like a 7 year old, it really doesnt suit him at all. I also cant imagine that voice working in the more dramatic scenes where he gets pissed off. He also doesnt have his great laugh any more. Usopp is just painful to hear. I suppose it kinda suits his personality, but even so it is an unpleasent assault on the senses to hear him speak. Nami's voice is likewiese horrendous, and worst of all is Sanji. Brooklyn. Sanji is meant to be cool and sophisticated, and instead they've made him sound like a New York Plumber with a bad cold.

I'll leave off by saying that for 4kids to have edited it SO much all the way through, it is clear that OP was never suitable for the audience they've tried to bring it to. They've tried to make something which is teen/adult into a show for 10 year olds. Since they cant get through a single episode without chopping it to pieces, they should have realised their mistake

The only voice I don't really mind is Zoro's, but that's mostly because I give his VA good credit for his work as Gattsu from Berserk (how exactly did 4kids get a hold of the VA of the most kickass anime character in history is beyond me). Still, like you have said, it's too old for Zoro. Good for Gattsu though. All he needed to do is scream, swear, and kill as him.

That whole statement doesn't feel right when 4kids is not allowing any LEGAL distribution of a subtitled version of One Piece. Usually the choice in anime DVDs was 'Either watch the dub or the sub and see how you like it'. Having the choice for One Piece being 'Like the dub or don't like it at all' is very unfair to me. That whole statement doesn't feel right when 4kids is not allowing any LEGAL distribution of a subtitled version of One Piece. Usually the choice in anime DVDs was 'Either watch the dub or the sub and see how you like it'. Having the choice for One Piece being 'Like the dub or don't like it at all' is very unfair to me. Sure I get the subs from K-F but the mainstream public will not waste that much trouble to watch an anime so they will never know how good One Piece is.

And for anyone who says "Well, if they're uncut, then watch them", how long do you think you can watch One Piece with Sanji's and Usopp's dub voices without going absolutely crazy?

One Piece could have been one of those shows that truly surpassed all others in America. Then the absolute and total fucktards at 4Kids got their hands on it. I actually wouldn't be even half as pissed off as I am if they didn't promise to maintain the quality of their series in the future at last year's Otakon... before coming out and showing the absolute and total rape of this show. I actually think in it's original stages, the people at 4Kids may have actually tried to keep this promise, as they simply translated the first opening theme to English. I'm guessing one of the Amazing FOXtard Executives™ thought to their brilliant selves with a shit-eating grin "hey, you know what a pirate show needs? Hip hop, cause as you know, those kids today love the hip hop, especially that rising new star MCHammer - He's pretty popular right? Let's get him!". Then of course going by 4Kids even more brilliant logic, guns are of course very bad, so anyone who sees one is immediately going to go out and grab a 17th century style pistol to shoot up their school, cause who's gonna teach them it's wrong, their parents? No way, not when there's Yoga, Swinger Parties, and as much beer as those wacky parents can do out of a beer bong. It's funny, they get pregnant early, don't have a childhood, then re-live it when they can leave their kids in front of a TV show or video game... it's HILARIOUS...

I complained that they cut 10 minutes each ep over here in Germany
Compared to what you have to endure I have reallyne reason to complain since they left the blood ,the cigarettes(sp?)/cigars, the alcohol(sp?), guns, the character development and most the action in not to mention the apis & little garden. Also from what I can tell the inros 1 to 1 translations of the original jap intros.

If you you want to force them to make a better dub you have stop watching the dub. That´s how it worked over here.
