Yeah, I've seen Samurai Champloo, it's really good. Another series that's pretty good with samurai is Samurai 7. I also like a series called Tenjou Tenge...pretty good series, and it reminds me of this series I used to watch called Ikki Tousen. God I miss Ikki Tousen.

Its basicly a journey. Fuu a 15 year old female meets Jin and Mugen 2 great samurai. Jin has a traditional clean fighting style, where Mugen fights sloppy and uses b-boy like moves. They get arrested and are going to be executed when Fuu saves them and makes them agree to quest for the Samurai who smells of Sunflowers. They go across edo Japan and come across all kinds of battles and such. Its a very good series created by the director of Cowboy Bebop.
Phantasmagoria
09-26-2004, 10:12 PM
three main character
jin-calm samurai
mugen-crazy samurai
fuu-...this girl ^^;;
mugen and jin are fighting in a tavern than fuu works in and catch it on fire killing a rich...son of someone...and are put in jail. Fuu tells mugen and jin that she can get them out of the jail if they help her find the samurai who smells of sunflowers
so they're on a journey to find the samurai who smells of sunflowers

I watched one episode of this streamed on one of winamps tv stations and I thought it was pretty damn good. Well, this should be obvious considering it was done by Bebops director. Unfortunatley I have neglected to watch any more of it because well... I don't know why!
Sounds like a task I need to get onto downloading.
the anime is made by the same director of Cowboy Bebop so it was a given from the start that it would be really cool. Plus the siundtrack is beautiful. Highly recommended to everyone.

I have to admit, Samurai Champloo is my favorite anime along with CowBoy Bebop. I think I'm just so in love with this guy that made both of them.
It's just that these anime episodes are so full of both a really spicy sense of humor and very nice pictures.
I wish they won't get this anime licensed in France, since I wanna see them all fast !
Hopefully a DVD will come out soon, to buy !

I'm curious what sub groups will continue it. I think I have 1-7 from Anime One, I hope they finish it. Excellent anime. So amazingly stylish and unorthodox.

Heh. You can tell I made my post in the middle of class, geeze, to screw up the distributor like that. I appologize to all. I think what happened was I was reading about Samurai 7 being licensed by Funimation. Oh well. Glad you corrected me, Mugen.
And yeah, I was just getting ready to ask if anyone knows what the bandana is going to look like. Keep in mind, I've only seen up to episode 7, so many it belongs to a character I don't know about.

SC has one of the best fighting sequences- they actually show 'em fighting and not just two flashes of light darting around. Mugen's hip hop fightin' style- yo!- is original and hilarious juxtoposed to Jin's traditional dojo style of samurai fighting. And the mixing of sounds and rapping and phat graffiti words, it's all there. It's a cool fusion anime with new-age elements in a traditional Japanese settings. Watch it to believe and love it. xD
Kinda wished that the next episode is out sooner though. >:

Oh man SC is the best! I'm in love with this show! I've only seen episodes 1-10 though, but I still love it. I think the DVD is coming out in January (arg what a long wait, but WELL worth it). This anime totally lives up to it's standards since it was done by the same people who did Bebop and Wolf's Rain (also faves of fine). I'm really curious as to who will be doing the voices. Is it just me or would David Lucas (voice of Spike from Bebop) be the perfect Mugen and Crispin Freeman (voice of Alucard from Hellsing, Tsume from WR, and Balmung from .hack//) as Jin. <----and yes I know that these voice actors have done more then the roles I listed, I was just listing the most well known ones for reference. I think those two would be awesome for those roles though. Ahhh! I can't wait for the DVD!!!

I hope the subs come out soon for 16 and 17. I want to know why that strange guy was attacking Jin. He seemed to hail from Jin's dojo. Also, I could tell that Fuu was offended that Mugen didn't think she was cute or worthy to hit on. I want to know what Mugen had to say that got her so mad, lol.

According to the official Japanese Samurai Champloo website, the "second season" (episodes 18-26) will air on the BS Fuji satellite TV network Saturdays from 10:30 to 11 AM beginning January 22, 2005. Each episode will get a repeat broadcast on Friday nights from 1:30 to 2:00 AM beginning January 28th.
Just thought people would like to know the specifics, :)
In eNerGy this past Sunday. They showed Many animes that will be heading to US or are already here. One of them was SC. Funny enough. They showed the Dub. I couldn't get the VA for the dub. But I can tell ya that Mugen is played by the same person who did Spike in Cowboy Bebop. Fuu's VA fits well. Jin's isn't really that good, but it will grow of you.

I KNEW IT! Mugen is voiced by David Lucas. I figured it out when I saw his name listed in the cast list at Anime News Network (it didn't have the characters' names; only the VAs', but Mugen was the only character whom David Lucas' voice seemed to fit).

You guys should all pick up the first DVD that comes with the box! The box is absolutely gorgeous! And it comes with an awesome bandana! At Suncoast we only got 2 copies of the box and they were both unavailable to the public since both got reserved. (one from some random person and I did the other one) So yep it's obvious we already sold out of the one with the box and it's likely we won't be getting any more in much like the Chrono Crusade box. Pick it up while you can!

-David Lucas as Mugen
-Kari Wahlgren as Fuu
-Kirk Thornton as Jin
David Lucas obviously did Spike
Kari Wahlgren was Robin in Witch Hunter Robin and Haruko in FLCL
Kirk Thornton was Saitou in Rurouni Kenshin
I personally think this is a great cast. I wouldve picked Lex Lang for Mugen, but thats me.

From Adult Swim's recent Questions & Answers they held tonight, one of the questions was:
Does Adult Swim have any desire to gain the rights to Samurai Champloo?
And their answer was:
Yes! So I guess now is a good time to announce two new acquisitions for 2005. We've picked up Samurai Champloo and Paranoia Agent, and they'll both start this Summer.
This is good news for people who may have heard of SC, but don't want to buy the DVD incase they're afraid they won't like it. My friend is especially glad, because I've told her about SC and she seems really interested.
And yes, this is Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Although I'm pretty sure there isn't another one out there.

this is good news, as me, with my love of hip hop and samurais now has something to watch aside from samurai jack(hey, don't get me wrong, I like SJ too). When I first watched this show, I fell in love from episode one, two was alright, but the rest got better and better.
the new eps start the 25th if I recall(can someone verify?) and I can't wait.
My only question is this. The director(Wanatabe?), always seems to do a show with a music influence. Cowboy Bebop was jazz. Champloo is Hip Hop. So do you think his next show will be music based aswell?
Edit: Crabman, Your Jam Sig is the bomb diggity dizzle nizzle. word. ;p

The dub is definitely one of the better ones out there. I was really attached to the Japanese voice actors (just like with Naruto), but the english voice actors they picked haven't done me wrong. I can't wait to see the later episodes dubbed, especially 11 + 12.

Why wouldn't there be a dub? It's in the US, isn't it? That means a dub is required. Duh.
Also, the dub sounds great; it's done by the same people who did Bebop (Animaze). Steve Blum (Spike) plays Mugen, and you'll hear Beau Billingslea (Jet), Wendee Lee (Faye), and many other familiar voices in the dub.

has anyone seen the dubbed version on dvd yet? i've only seen the first 5 eps in japanese, awesome series. i didnt even know the series was licensed until i walked into bestbuy and saw it sitting there, i spent 25$ :( oh well. it was worth it, they did a very good job with the voice actors, there's still a lot of blood, i didn't see anything they changed.

They usually leave all that stuff in on the DVDs.
I've yet to hear the dub.I heard Jin's voice didn't fit him?
I haven't seen any of the Japanese episodes, and I thought that the dub was one of the most excellent I've ever heard.
Jin's voice fit him just fine, in my opinion. Intelligent, calm and cool. But again, I never heard the Japanese, so I've formed no prejudices.

Jin sounds like the same guy that did Hiei's voice in YYH's dub. Him or Kurama seiyuu..they both fit(regardless of who it is), the calm and collected Jin. Mugen's voice...to no surprise..is the guy who did spike from Cowboy Bebop.
A couple of his lines sound alittle forced(since..his voice doesn't strike me as one that would be spitting hip-hop-ish terms like "Wassup")..but over all its a very good dub. I'm just waiting to see how they handle the rest of the series..

The dub for SC is one of the best I've ever heard. Of course, I still love the Japanese voice actors better, but that's because I heard them for 17 episodes (21 now). Also, it had already been licensed by Geneon a year before it even went out in Japan.
Now I want to watch the dub, but it's too late. I'll get to it this weekend.

Actually, just because it is released in the US does not mean that there will be a dub. Sure, a series like this almost guarantees it but there are some anime movies by big name studios that do not release dubs with their releases. So, just because it is released here in the US does not mean it requires a dub.
Also, I'm saddened to learn about who's dubbing this. Sure, they're good and all...but I'm getting tired of hearing them. I mean, REALLY tired of hearing them. Oh well. I'll still watch it to see what all the fuss was about, but if I buy the DVDs I'll probably only watch it subbed. At least until I get less annoyed with hearing Steve Blum and Wendee Lee.

Thread on SAmurai Champloo. Discuss what you liked about it, what you hated, etc, but REMEMBer to put spoiler tags for the latter episodes.
Samurai Champloo was ok. Animation, characters and concept was AWESOME, but the plot (the backbone of any animated story) kinda sucked. I was disappointed at the ending too.
First off the story's plot was SOOOO bland... throughout the entire anime it was just the three looking for that sunflower samurai with each episode or two being just totally random sidestories. It doesn't build up tension and the storyline wasn't intricate enough.
Frankly speaking, they could have gotten rid of half the episodes and you still wouldn't be lost by the time you finish episode 26.
Ending SPoilers:
There were holes in the plot that should've been covered IMO. Like what's the point of Sara (blind chick) saying how no one has loved Mugen before if that wasn't really resolved at the end.
And like how Fuu "chose" Mugen over Jin but after she 'chose' him.... nothing happened. By nothing i mean it was like,
"i'll make up my mind and choose you, you breakdancing samurai. Ok bye lets split up."
But if the manga is still going on then i understnad then it's all good.

You must have not understood a couple of sequences you have up there. Especially when fuu chose mugen over jin when they met sara. She chose mugen, hoping jin would refuse and travel with her..its explained in the next scene.
Second, you must have also never have seen cowboy bebop. Watanabe sets up his animes the same way. takes about 3-4 cast members, and has them do crazy adventures from time to time involving a HUGE amount of smaller, non-plot related characters. Yeah, they could've skipped alot of the episodes and arrived at the same point, but the anime was more of showing character developement through weird situations(if that makes sense). Its part of the reason you grow to love mugen/fuu/jin by the end of the series.
And third. Ninja Baseball Episode=OWNAGE.
Literally Exaggerated
03-30-2005, 06:38 PM
I think you may have missed the point. This wasn't an anime about plot. Look for big climactic plot driven moments, crazy twists, or overreaching plot arcs with clear resolution, and you'll be disappointed.
In that sense, it is the anti-Naruto. Naruto is all about big villains and overreaching stories and whatnot. Characters are simple, what matters is the story. This was about the growth, development and exploration of 3 characters. Every emotionally powerful moment in the series was driven by character, and everything that mattered in it was related to the characters, their pasts, and their relationships.
And personally, I loved it, and think it is easily one of the greatest anime series of all time.

if you look back at the Sara episode..Jin agreed to travel with Sara alone to protect Mugen and Fuu because he had a feeling that she had an ulterior motive...when they were both recooperating from their injuries after getting whooped on by Sara, Mugen asked Jin if he only agreed to leave because he knew Sara was a bad person and Jin acknowledged it as so

Mugen killed Sara but only because she allowed him to.
Also besides the Baseball episode which was hott, I also like the grafitii episode just because it was so random. I mean grafiti was created in New York City in the 80s and diffenetly not in Japan. In the episode though the grafitii looked awsome.

Anyone know the release date for the third dvd dubbed (episodes 09-12)? If you check out http://www.samuraichamploodvd.com it doesn't even list DVD 02, which has already been released. Geneon really needs to update their website, but then I guess they're too busy dubbing the series. :P I haven't seen the series subbed yet (I'm actually downloading it all right now..2gigs to go) my first exposure to it was in english, I'm curious to hear the japanese voices.

It was a great series, though I also shared the frustation of many at the series not having a strong series-wide story. Champloo didnt have so much a storyline as it had a vague incentive; a plot device for the three characters to stick together. It seems the series was never about the sunflower samurai hunt, just merely about three characters getting by in a re-imagined hip hop style samurai era, but a little more series-wide narrative (or a second season) wouldnt have hurt it at all.
The soundtracks are my favourite thing about this anime really, they take the true spirit of hip hop and infused it with anime perfectly, the people involved with the soundtracks are amazing. Nujabes's album Metaphorical Music is an instant classic with so many beautiful tunes in it, Fat Jon's instrumental hip hop albums are also keepers, and his hip hop group the Five Deez are also one of the best hip hop groups around at the moment.
Also: The sword fights in this anime were the best animated I've ever seen, nothing less from the Watanabe crew, also responsible for the best hand combat in anime (Bebop movie).

You should watch the subbed version, you will see how CRAZY Mugen is! He is insane, i think Steven Blum will get to figure out as times goes by how to make Mugen sound like he should.

So Shinichirô Watanabe did it again. He showed us how professionals make(or direct) anime series.
now that its over, do you guys think there is gonna be a movie? Cowboy bebop had a movie and both was also directer by Shinichirô Watanabe.
If you have any links, post em here :cool

Yeah but this anime still has some great stories to tell, the reletationships between the three of them, Jin's dojo, Mugen's familys past and why he was on that prison island, Shogun should still be after them.
From what I've heard this show was cancelled becasu of lack of popularity in Japan not because the story was finished,
I actually hope that they will make a third season.

After like 17 episodes there was a small break then the "2nd" season started. I've heard it was because they changed company or something like that. So eps 18-26 are actually 2nd season episode 1-8 :amuse
Kind of confusing since the subbers or kept calling them 18-26, even if I think that was the right thing to do. :)

It's pretty. The "plot" is leaving me a bit cold though. Still, it has its moments.
"sometimes two male fireflies try to attract each other."

06-27-2005, 01:29 AM
Really, Samurai Champloo used to be a pirater's cult item, until Anime Insider did a fat article on it. Then it became a specialty of a DVD buyer like me, who damns all of you bittorent bastards to the depths of hell. Now, it's just given to all the 11-year old kids who think it's another Rurouni Kenshin. And EVERYBODY will talk about it. And there will be FanFiction, and fansites and all that crap. Everyone will love Jin and hate Mugen for having facial hair and trying to get laid.
Potential 12 year old kid AIM convo:
Battousai45X: ZOMG, Mugen's such a freakin' perv!
aOsHi8594320: Yeah, he's sooooo ugly.
Battousai45X: Why the hell is he in the show?
End conversation
They're going to kill all the violence for the little kids that they ALL know will be watching. Bebop wasn't really a hit with the younger generation because of the rather complex nature of the show. However, that same complexity will be ignored in SC because it looks like Rurouni Kenshin.
Maybe I'm being greedy, but I think Cartoon Network has actually done a disservice to the community by expecting us to watch this dubbed and edited crap.
P.S. The DVDs rock ass!!!!

I really hope they dont continue it just for the sake of continuing itI agree. I just finished it and although it seems abrupt, I kinda like how it leaves us hanging. Not every show has to have the good guys end in a big flashy death or in cases like these, they don't have to be so conclusive where we know exactly where everyone ends up. They've wrapped up the battles they were entangled in when they were together and now they don't really have anything to do with each other anymore. Sure, they've become companions for each other and their presence has changed probably each of them, but the wanderer/loner is still a very strong part of each of them, and to stray from that and bring them together for no reason might be a little out of character. If perhaps they hadn't split ways at the end, or if Fuu had asked them in the beginning to simply be her bodyguards (indefinitely :X), a sequel could be in order, because there'd be a reason to continue with their journey and what happens to them.
Yeah but this anime still has some great stories to tell, the reletationships between the three of them, Jin's dojo, Mugen's familys past and why he was on that prison island, Shogun should still be after them.
From what I've heard this show was cancelled becasu of lack of popularity in Japan not because the story was finished,
I actually hope that they will make a third season.True, there could be many stories to continue with but some things are just better left unsaid. We don't need to know every single little detail of their past especially in a story like this. For this kind of tale, the past doesn't really matter. If you've ever watched "Lost," you'll know what I'm talking about. It shaped the way you grew up and who you are now, it'll come back to haunt you, attack you, but it doesn't play that big a role when the story focuses on the developing friendship between three strangers. Besides, they pretty much covered the parts of their pasts that were pertinent to the story.
But you bring up a good point, the shogunate could still be after them--Fuu for being Seizou's daughter, Jin and Mugen for murdering who they have. And if they ever do create a third/second whatever season, I would so watch it. :P But I like how it ended so it's not necessary. I'd prefer to have them stay together but that's life.

How many episodes are in Samurai Champloo? I thought there were only 26? So if that is 1 season and there is no episodes being aired in Japan how can there be a second season? It could be a simple misinturpitation on my part.

I've seen all of the cowboy bebop episodes and some of the samurai champloo episodes too. I realy liked bebop's action packed side stories. However, this show realy sticks out towards the end of the series. The last two episodes were simply amazing! So far, I've only seen A few episodes of champloo. After seeing watanabe's work on bebop. I would'nt be surprised if champloo ended with an even beter smash hit ending. I'm A little past mugen and jin's batte with each other. I wonder if they will have another amazing battle with each other later on in the series?

Mugen looks like Spike. It sounds like the same voice for Mugen and Spike. Watanabe must like fuzzy-haired guys who dont give a (SHUT YO MOUTH!)
Anyways, I started watching at episode 5. Somebody summarize the ones before that for me?
Also, anime's seldom have a full-developed love story. Dragon Ball Z was an exception and it looks like Naruto might break the mold with Shikamaru and Temari. But so far, love in animes never get a chance to fully develop.

Only saw one episode so far, but what I've seen, it's not too bad.
I haven't seen the subtitled version, but I don't think I want to. The english VA's fit the characters very nicely, and as usual, Steve Blum does an excellent job. It makes me even more excited to see him come up as Kakashi later on this year.
I agree it definately has that Cowboy Bebop feel to it. Three people traveling towards some ambiguous goal, just trying to survive day by day. The episode I saw was a side story of Jin and a brothel girl he falls in love with and I felt like I was watching a feudal Japan version of CB... especially with Mugen and his huge hair, lounging around and scheming up ways to make money.
I'll reserve my true opinion as soon as I watch more episodes on Adult Swim. I may pick up a DVD whenever it comes out.

Samurai Champloo Vol 05 (Eps 17-20)
Release Date: 09/27/2005
I've seen 06 listed with a release date of 11/22/2005, but I haven't heard mention of what episodes will be on it. Haven't heard of an 07 anywhere, so not sure if they plan to put the last 6 episodes on vol 06, or 3/3 and release one more volume. Either way it doesn't look like the series will be completed and fully released until the end of the year, maybe a little longer if theres a volume 07.
I will definately be picking 05 up, although I'll probly be kicking my self in the ass when I have all the released DVD's and they decide to make a boxset. :P
