Every politician, presumably, is opposed to rape. So it would seem likely that Sen. Al Franken’s first legislative amendment — which would prohibit government contractors from restricting workers from suing if they are sexually assaulted while on the job — would pass unanimously. The provision was inspired by the story of a 19-year-old KBR employee who was gang-raped by co-workers while detailed to Iraq. Upon returning to the U.S., she learned that she was unable to sue the company because of a clause in her contract.

“Seems like a bit of a slam dunk,” noted Jon Stewart, in a segment on The Daily Show last night. “How is anyone against this?”

But the provision merely passed the Senate by a 68-30 margin, along party lines. Stewart goes on to gleefully savage Sen. Jeff Sessions and other Republicans for opposing the measure.

I just watched the clip on Comedy Central about 15 minutes ago. I'm not shocked that all 30 Nay votes were from male republicans. I can't imagine a female republican voting against a bill that's against gang rape :wha

You must not know many female republicans. :ho

Seriously though, I believe most of them don't even read these bills and just vote no because the person who brought it up has a "D" in front of their names. :facepalm.

Female Republicans would almost be an oxymoron if it weren't for Ann Coulter.

Or black Republicans if it weren't for their token RNC chair.

Republicans in my experience like three things:

1.) whiteness
2.) richness
3.) maleness

Not to say Democrats don't suck...they do.

What was my point again? Oh yeah...vote Independent. :thumbs

I'm still trying to understand why they voted against it. The issue to me shouldn't be a GOP or DEM issue but one of rights for victims.

Independents don't know what they want, they suck the most.

Independents dont want the trash that plagues our government today in office. That includes both parties.

While its important that we try to keep it an 2 party system or maybe even an 3rd party would be nice to allow for balance and not let the balance get too out of control with a ridiculous amount of parties involved but the democrats and republicans have become so fucked up for the past few decades that really no one is benefiting from their actions and a lot of the time their mindless bickering and hating has only resulted in shit that needs to get done never does.

All I want is people that actually care in office and I feel the 2 parties dont care and only serve their own interests and only lie and bullshit to us so they can stay in office.

Hulu's/ video restrictions are pretty easy to bypass.

Hulu Tutorial
1. Download and install Firefox. (If you haven't already.)
2. Install the Modify header plugin.
3. Restart firefox.
4. Go to tools ->modify header

Click on the drop down list and choose add
Box 1: X-Forwarded-For
Box 2: 66.249.71.209 (You can replace it with any US ip. I just randomly found this with google.)
Box 3: Empty

Here's what it should look like.
Spoiler: http://i28.tinypic.com/s5d9ie.jpg

Now you can watch the videos on any sites that have regional restrictions such as comedy central and hulu.

What a lot of you may be missing is what ELSE is in the bill. It's common tactic to throw in BS taxes in bills like this because it makes the person look bad. Because they voted against doesn't mean they are for gangrape as the Moron who is John Stewart, is trying to imply. Because he thinks it's funny, or his audience is to slow to pay attention to the all the facts. If you look at the healthcare bill, there is so much Pork in there the Beef industry should sue.

Until you see what the bill completely has in it, your opinions are derived of ignorance. Now if the bill was just about the Anti rape then you'd have a point, but i seriously doubt that's all that was in there.

http://senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=111&session=1&vote=00308

Statement of Purpose: To prohibit the use of funds for any Federal contract with Halliburton Company, KBR, Inc., any of their subsidiaries or affiliates, or any other contracting party if such contractor or a subcontractor at any tier under such contract requires that employees or independent contractors sign mandatory arbitration clauses regarding certain claims.

Statement of Purpose says nothing about rape, just singles out Halliburton. That's probably the most they paid attention to.

SA 2588. Mr. FRANKEN (for himself and Ms. Landrieu) submitted an amendment intended to be proposed by him to the bill H.R. 3326, making appropriations for the Department of Defense for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2010, and for other purposes; as follows:

On page 245, between lines 8 and 9, insert the following:

Sec. 8104. (a) None of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act may be used for any existing or new Federal contract if the contractor or a subcontractor at any tier requires that an employee or independent contractor, as a condition of employment, sign a contract that mandates that the employee or independent contractor performing work under the contract or subcontract resolve through arbitration any claim under title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 or any tort related to or arising out of sexual assault or harassment, including assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, false imprisonment, or negligent hiring, supervision, or retention.

Complete text.

AlphaRooster

From what I get out of this, the amendment wants to stop federal funds going to Haliburton and its affiliates if they make their employees sign a contract that doesn't allow the employees to sue over items mentioned under the civil rights act of 1964.
Yes this includes sexual harrassment, but if it allows anyone to sue over anything who's protecting Halliburton? Dems always hated Haliburton, this is their way of hurting the company.

It's funny how John Stewart only points out the fact that Republicans voted against a antirape amendment...Which it is not.

Hilarious how people are trying to defend those who voted nay. If it was really something else that was the issue in the bill, they would have brought it up, they did not. Besides, of those who voted "nay" many of their colleagues who are within the same party, share similar political ideology and very similar views overall voted in favor of this bill, so one can't help but wonder why those who voted against this bill did so. I would not be surprised if there was some personally financial motives behind doing so.

I can't comment on that (although the Fountainhead has a really fucked up scene where the sex definitely appears to be rape, but all her characters are so psychotic it's hard to tell if she "really" wanted it, as it seems to be hinted.). I believe that if you want to rape someone, and you could get away with it, and it wouldn't negatively effect you (more so than the pleasure of the rape) then it'd be OK. Someone please prove me wrong.

I'm more concerned with her huge hypocracy. A cult formed around her, which is funny since one of their central beliefs was individualism. I first read about it in "Why People Believe Weird Things." This website looks like it has similar info, but I haven't read the whole site. http://www.2think.org/02_2_she.shtml

Ayn Rand's philosophy is, as Jon said, "better" for famous and succesful people because the following of Rand's ideals leads to the creation of an egotistical, self-centered asshole who had no problems using those around themselves and using their power to cooerce others.

This person is ideally totally self-reliant, which has it's own problems, but I've given her too much time. She's a crackpot.

Ok, it may be that your language is unclear here, but you said "wouldn't negatively affect you". Who is you in this scenario? The raper or the rapee?

Cause from the language, it sounds like you're saying rape is cool if the raper is cool with it. It's morally wrong to infringe on someone's freedom.

If what you're really saying is that this is consentual, meaning the rapee is up for it, then it essentially becomes S&M, not rape.

Rape by definition is non-consensual sex, and anything that fits under this definition is always wrong since it's a vialotion of someone's freedom.
