One of the most coolest and funniest shows i have seen in a long time, i am not sure if they did a good job tranlating into English (if they did), but i really like the Japanese version the best

Dude, this anime confuses me. I've seen the entire thing about 8 times (lol, not hard though, it's only 6 episodes long) and I still feel like I'm only scratching the surface.
I have to compliment the guys who dubbed this. It's the greatest dub ever! I've never seen such incredible work. They should go down in a Hall-of-Fame somewhere.
They get my Viewer's Appriciation Award, that's for sure.

I never thought it was that confusing, just alittle weird. And yes, it is a very good dub.

The plot isn't that confusing as long as you take the time to think about it and it's metaphors

I loved this anime for many reasons
1 It was short yet sweet, It was 6 episodes yet you could get an entire story out of it
2 It was very funny and random
3 It was very well dubbed
4 It had Its cool as hell moments like the Giant Pheonix Atomisk

Although this strains a little from the original question asked by WarDragon, can anyone tell me where I can find FLCL subs? I've heard a lot about FLCL, and I've been wanting to check it out myself (That was before reading this topic), but I've never been able to find it.

Heh, its refreshing to see that フリクリis still talked about. Over at the Production IG boards, they have a Furi Kuri section, but its been empty for months. too easy too talk the hell out of a 6 episode OVA. I own all of the DVDs, and seen the anime way too much (over 70 times I think). So many features on the DVD kept it from getting old, but even watching it as many times I had it can get boring and is no longer unusaul, because you can quote most of the series.

I have Been Furi Kuri clean for 2 months now, so I dont think I have to worry until the japanese collection comes out. Oh, and gainax roxorz my boxorz! check out Evangelion if you already haven't. the Directors cut is out now in USA.

The dubbing company for FLCL is Synch-Point. They did an extremely good job on FLCL. It is the most well-done dub I have seen. And the Soundtrack is up there as one of the best ever, in my opinion. It was what made FLCL a great Anime. It still would have been really good if the Soundtrack wasn't done by The Pillows, but it wouldn't have been as great as it is.

XD FLCL is one of my favourite anime ever (mainly because it's one of the only few I've seen thus far, but me not being a complete anime whore is besides the point). It's not easy to understand unless you were given an outline on the vague symbolisms you have to decipher the in the anime, usually after multiple sittings.

Believe it or not, the anime's theme is really about adolescence. o.<;

Look at it this way if it wasnt weird then it would be crap, and really he only talks to like 3 girls in the series (Mamimi, Haruko, Ninamori, correct me if im wrong) so really its not alot of girls.

The storyline's supposed to be really abstract.
From what I gathered there's a lot of metaphors for puberty and a lot of references to Eva. ^^
Yeah if you ever watched Eva, it's kind of like that.

This anime is so damn hilarious. Even though my first thoughts after hearing a short summary of the show from a friend were "WTF?"...
But after seeing the firts epusode, I loved it. It bacame totally awsome after Amarao (You know the guy with the eyebrows) made his debut... I couldn't stop laughing when they fell (http://www.catnapped.org/eyebrows/06.png) of for the first time... So funny!
You just gotta love the guy... Someone should build a fanclub for him...

Furi Kuri is so much better in original language(also kinda of a slap in the face when I hear FLCL or Fooly Cooly) and not confusing at all if you ask me. I mean seriously, everybody has questions about it, and I just quote the Eps and there you go(usually EP 4). I mean the only somewhat confusing part is the relationships and that isn't confusing at all.

Basically all I'm saying is Synch-Point Sucks, Furi Kuri deserves better. and I'll end with quotes.
"アア、あの餓鬼…""あの眉毛…"

There are only half a dozen episodes. That's right... six episodes. But the part of FLCL is that it can't be explained. In fact, a lot of animes can't be explained. One could say that it's about one kid's life.

nejis-eyes
05-29-2005, 02:42 AM
But it doesn't mean anything... I guess I've seen all six episodes. But I guess that makes sense. THe orriginal hitchiker's guide didn't have a plot or a point, I guess an anime doesn't have to have one either.

That said, I can't really say I enjoyed it. I'm more of a ninja or psychic man myself. OKAY OKAY OKAY! Lemme explain it! FLCL is twisted so u wont understand unless u have a twisted mind (like meh!). *ahem*. it starts out with a boy and his childhood. he wants to be like his big bro someday at playin baseball (which he is currently in da US) some alien girl comes down to find her lover, Atomsk. she uses Naota's head to bring out robots and stuff becuz thats what she used to do with Atomsk. so it brings back memories for her and helps her get closer to Atomsk. it only works with Naota's head cuz hes still a child with imagination and crap. (still with me so far?)
the bracelet on Haruko's (the alien girl) hand is actually a handcuff. Atomsk, has one on his nose (which he is a giant bird. so its his beak) and they were once chained together in prison. (which means they were like partners). Atomisk is actually inside Naota meaning that they are almost one in the same.
da end. need me to explain a bit more? or are u still lost?
and all the other crap that happens in the story...is just there because...well just because.
da end

This is the single best FLCL website that I know of, and I've read them all. It clears up the who, what, when, where, and why of this thoroughly confusing show. If you're confused, definitely read the episode guides there. It will make a lot more sense.

This is the single best FLCL website that I know of, and I've read them all. It clears up the who, what, when, where, and why of this thoroughly confusing show. If you're confused, definitely read the episode guides there. It will make a lot more sense.

Yep, http://www.agefive.com/FLCL/html/navigation.html is THE BEST site to go for explanations. Read all of the Episode Guides and be sure to read the FAQ too!!! After reading through that site thoroughly, I think it'll eliminate most if not all of your questions.

For those who are to lazy to go to the sites. I'll clear it up for you

1st: WATCH EVER EP!!!!!!!!!! Sry i get really angry at people who only watch like 2 or 3 eps and are all like OMG THIS IS SO CONFUSING. To understand it you have to watch every ep.

Ok...
Basically Waharuhara Haruko is an ex-space patrol officer, in search of the Pirate King Atomisk. Atomisk was known to have so much N.O. he had the ability to pull planets and even galaxies. N.O. is a the size and strength of a portal created through the right and left brained. Naota (aka Ta-kun) is one of the people who are both-brained. Haruko stumbled on to Ta-kun and tried to open a portal to release Atomisk, who was captured my medical machanica. Kanti a medical machanica robot who housed Atomisk was pulled through the N.O. within Ta-kun. Haruko tried to force out Atomisk with her guitar, but it more or less failed and the powers of Atomisk could only be awakened when Ta-kun and Canti were fused together.

The first ep was when Haruko and Ta-kun first met. That was also when Atomisk was released from Medical Machanica's grip

The 2nd ep was the beginning of process of fusion between Canti and Ta-kun. To those who don't get that whole firestarters thing, Mamami was the one who burned down the school.

The 3rd ep was when Ta-kun litterally exchanged the N.O. with Ninamori.

The 4th ep was the 1st encounter with Amarom, the leader of the Space patrol Brotherhood (or fraternaty). This ep is also the ep where N.O. is explained

The 5th ep was when the location of Atomisk is revieled, as well as the begining of the final assult.

The 6th and final ep was when what Medical Machanica is, is accually revealed (a giant iron that smooths out the wrinkles in you brain, so you cant think anymore). Atomisk is freed to do what he is pleased and Haruko chases after him once again.

To those who don't know what Fooly Cooly means, it more or less means "Foolishly Cool." Kinda like the show itself

I found the show quite easy to understand, really. It's about growing up and finding your own place in the world. About taking responsability for your actions and thinking for yourself. About becoming mature. It's basically a coming of age story.

A2L

I dunno, it almost seems that there's more to it. Like some kind of real message, they reference the wrinkles in the brain far too much... I mean, every time you learn something new, you form a new wrinkle... yet medical mechanica wants to smooth over those so you can't think anymore...

it almost seems like it's against capitolism or something. Like huge corporations smooth over your brain so you don't think, just "buy" sort of thing. I can see how it can also be seen as a coming of age story, I thought about that the first time I saw it. But it seems too deliberately crazy to be meaningless, within the senselessness it has to make sense. I probably did too much acid as a kid so i think everything has meaning but it just seems that we're all missing the big picture of the show.

Also, if there is a big picture (not literallY) of what the series means.. is it on one of those links? I didn't bother reading them.

wait that was the underlying message behind it?? That was it?? I got that the first time.. but when i would frequent other forums people would hint that it was some huge mind blowingly insane life changing kind of message... psh. That was pretty disappointing... I would watch it over and over trying to figure out what I could have been missing... FLCL, also known as Furi Kuri or Fooly Cooly, is a fast paced and confusing Japanese animated series. The story begins when an energetic alien girl drives up on a Vespa and hits an unsuspecting adolescent boy over the head with a left-handed bass guitar.

This crazy hyperactive style can easily be misinterpreted, causing strongly opposing opinions of the show's value. There are many metaphorical plots and hidden meanings underneath its surface. The series is a pun in itself with suggestive and sexual metaphors. The strange situations and dialogue reflect the confusion and awkwardness of puberty (as well as society in general). FLCL is an exercise in unconventional, self-alluding anime.

Being an unconventional love story at heart, the series uses comedic elements to bridge the story together including satires of John Woo and South Park, not to mention allusions to other anime such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Lupin III and Gundam. Essentially the series is a coming-of-age story.

FLCL's appeal is largely due to its music. Most of the background music was written and produced by the band "The Pillows," which has been very successful since the anime's release.

and now, we discuss

Very little in FLCL is actually random. This (http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:Ep7KsHLcVl0J:www.burninghammer.com/misc/FinalFLCL.doc&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1) will explain a lot, even if I don't agree with all its presumptions. At the core of FLCL is a coming of age story; humor takes center stage sometimes, but that is its crux. FLCL has enough symbolism to make Shakespeare look like a toddler with a crayon.

Naota is a boy living in the wake of his brother. Everything in the anime builds up to him learning to stand on his own feet (in a sexual way too, as it happens). Take the time to watch the series again-- pay attention to everything. The sheer quantity of symbolism is breathtaking (e.g. Haruna takes Tasuku's bed, Naota dislikes sour drinks).

The article above poses a great argument that FLCL is an allegory for transitional Japan and its culture. For example, the iron "flattening out the wrinkles of the world" could be construed as erasing culture, history, etc. I find this theory interesting as well. But FLCL is mostly about adolescent pangs and self.

So yeah, I love Furi Kuri. It's absurdist fiction, meaning that it leaves the "moral" up to you. Funny, stylish, and even a little emotional, it wraps up everything I like about anime.

2 things that bothered me though.

-the Manga scenes, ABSOLUTELY RETARDED. i dont think i ever disliked a part of any Anime i've watched as much as this.

-the fact that the main character is like 12 and his love interest (somewhat mutual, or at least thats how they show it for a long time) is a girl who is at least 19. this was just :iik

the fact that the main character is like 12 and his love interest (somewhat mutual, or at least thats how they show it for a long time) is a girl who is at least 19. this was just :iik

I see you're that type that never had a teacher crush. :P

Naota is in a very strange phase of life. He has no figure of respect, which lends to a cynical attitude towards life. His brother is gone, and his father is lecher and a do-nothing who cares only about himself. In this gap, Haruko fills a very electric maternal role. As I mentioned above, she takes his brother's sleeping place, invading his life and more or less demanding his emotional attention.

The kid is twelve. She's a beautiful woman that toys with his heartstrings in a joking way. Confused feelings are bound to happen. And by the way, the relationship was not reciprocal until the final scene; Haruko is, after all, an alien. Her only feelings were for Atomsk, and only something so naive and trusting as what Naota did could touch her heart. And I seriously doubt Haruko had sexual feelings for Naota at any point in FLCL.

Don't let your puritan background sound the cry "Pedophilia!!!" when something really more meaningful is behind it. There is such a thing as platonic and puppy love mixing. It's great character development in my opinion. Compared to trashed, ten-cent-romance-novel love you see on TV nowadays, it's stunning.

I think the first few eps go over most people's heads. I know they did for me. Once again, can't stress enough how watching this show a second time makes an incredible difference. It really is a neat little show once you understand the points its bringing up. If you want incomprehensible plot, watch Lain. Not saying it doesn't have a plot, but you won't be able to find it. FLCL is rich in plot compared to a lot of shows I have seen.

True. I gained a lot more from it watching it multiple times. The thing is though, it tries to get it's point across through symbolism. And shit load of it too. You have to be on the look out to whther a character is right or left handed to the flavor of foods they like. When I first watched it, I thought it was just some huge metaphor for sex. But that was only a part of it.

Lain is a mind trip though with the conspiracy thoeries and things like that. I've only gone through it once though so I'll have to watch it again some day.

Yes, those are good examples right there. It's all stuff you miss the first time through. This show ranks high on the "you gotta pay attention" meter.

I seriously love SEL to death. Oh man that show was sweet. Like I said, I think plot was maybe, sacrificed, but it is the best dementia/ headtrip show that I have seen yet. I love those kinds of shows though. Which is why I also like FLCL. Both shows are very symbolic. The thing with FLCL, I think a lot of people who are better off not watching it, do, because it is popular, or something. I don't really know.

Chatulio

You mean the whole Noata is the only one Haruka can use to open the portal thing?

Colonel Angus
11-03-2006, 02:49 AM
That wasn't the actual plot. More like an on the surface plot device to serve the story as a whole and make it look like the anime was actually going somewhere. The actual conflict, at least from what I can see, is that it's a story about adolecence, growing up and trying to cope with the adult world. Y'know, trying to make that transition.

But as I said before, the story's told through symbols. So what's actually important when watching is homing in on what the symbols are and what they're supposed to mean and seeing how the characters react to them.

This is also a similar style used in Cowboy Bebop. Cowboy Bebop not being as symbolic, but more about the characters and how they interact. It was episodic and seemed to have no plot, where really the story of the characters was the plot leading to the eventual ending. So in FLCL's case, it's about Mamami, Ta-Kun and Ninamori growing up (or at least trying to in their own little way).

Is there any place that I can download it/stream?

Streaming can be found on any generic streaming site (i.e. veoh), and da-anime.org has MU links for all of the episodes (dub and subbed): http://www.da-anime.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=185&Itemid=29

If you want I can upload all the episodes in MU in HQ. I have DVD rips with subs/dubs/director's comments. (You can choose whichever one you want)

I really think the key to enjoying this series is to just give up all pretense of trying to understand what's going on and just relax. The sooner you do that, the better it will be.

I think that's important, but only for the first viewing.

When you rewatch the series, you pick up on things, and you don't even have to try, they come naturally (at least in my case). The show throws a lot of you and you'll miss a lot of it on your first viewing since you don't know the whole story. Once you do, and you know everything about the characters, things add up more, like their behavior and such.

Of course, even then, you'll find stuff to discuss about. When I first watched it, I assumed that Mamimi definitely burnt her school down, but later I learned that others felt it could have happened by accident as well. After rewatching it, I agreed that it was sorta "up in the air", since the important factors were how she first met Naota's brother and how she was disappointed that the school didn't full disappear. She may have burnt down the school and not be aware of it, since she has difficulty seperating fantasy from reality.

Anyway, it's a great series. Glad you enjoyed it, and hopefully it'll be easier to follow on your second viewing, like it was for me.

Just finished this several days ago, I'm definitely going to give it a rewatch since I know I missed a lot. Won't hurt anyway, 6 episodes and it's easy on the eyes in terms of art/animation.

Anyone know where I can find FLCL - Ultimate Edition DVD Collection sealed(New) and below $50? From what I've heard its out of print and pretty rare. I've seen it for $70 on most sites and up to $150 on others. Trying to find a good deal.

I have the first dvds of this and love it. But thanks to the UK's pathetic releases the final dvd isn't out for about 3 weeks. I have no idea why we got this aces series so late.

Ugh, I'm also looking for a place to buy the Ultimate Collection, or at least the volumes individually. Where I live, there's not much variety, and I haven't found it around yet. Amazon's clean out and only seller's are offering and I'm not to keen on buying from sellers. Don't want no bootlegs. They're always overpricing too. Anything over 100 is just asking way too much. :pek

I would love to see a director's commentary for some of the episodes if the offer is still there for you to upload to MU.

Alright I'll do it but it's going to take some time since each episode's about 250 mb (the last episode is 350 mb).

Take you time man :). I was planning to watch 1 episode a day so no need to hurry with the other episodes. Which release is it btw.

Alright. If you're willing to wait then it's no problem. :D

And the release is by Blitz. Though like I said, it's basically just a DVD rip so all Blitz did is re-encode it.

I thought FLCL really made sense, I think I'm one of the few that understood what it was saying. It was funny, amusing and extremely fun yet with a message. I'm only sorry the anime had so few episodes. Highly recommended.

I still haven't managed to watch all of the episodes, yes, even though it is just 6 episodes long. I just keep watching the same ones over and over. I do so love the music and it is an eccentrically sweet story that I should complete sometime. At least I finished the manga based off of this?

lol you just re-watch the episodes rather than finish it? That's like the opposite of me. :lmao

The manga isn't as good as the anime IMO. I really disliked the art in the manga and FLCL just isn't the same in manga form (no awesome music, animation etc.)

Now go and finish it ASAP. :sun

Thanks Shin you rock. I watched episode 1 yesterday and it had all the crazyness I remembered. I have forgotten most of the story because it had been 5 years orso since I last watched this, that's why it's a lot of fun watching this again.

@Yakushi Kabuto, your sig is really disturbing. I have seen a lot of weird combination's (sasgay x naruto etc) but I have never seen something as disturbing as gay x orochimaru.
